Cindy's pov

John...

John...

I liked his name... I liked it even more than Michael. Sure, I didn't know any angel named John, but Jesus's most beloved disciple was named John, that's still good enough.

Though I felt bad that he couldn't have his lunch because of me, I was grateful for the talk we had, it left me feeling better.

Mom and Dad may not need my help right away but that didn't mean that I was backing down. At the first sign of distress, I'll take up another job or two and make them collect all my savings, but I wouldn't let the worry bother me or ruin my mood anymore.

Alright, so maybe Mabel was right, not a lot of men would take out their time to listen to other people's troubles or even offer any advice. And the way John spoke really proves that he could relate. I thought someone like him must have run away from home at age fourteen and lived on the streets, selling illegal stuffs, but I was wrong, he was someone that cared about his parents just like I did.

Oh, Cindy!

It's high time I stopped imagining the worst about people based on how they choose to live their lives. I totally misjudged John and for what? A little tattoo?!

Don't get me wrong, I still don't think we could ever end up together, but he seemed really nice and I wouldn't mind having him as a friend.

I just wish I get to see him soon again. And what was that he said? He hoped I wouldn't forget his name? Does that mean he plans to become a regular at M&T's? I'd have to make sure to pay special attention to my hair, even if I had to wear my uniform at work, dolling up my hair to look nicer wouldn't hurt.

"Cindy? Aren't you going for choir practice today?" Hearing mom's voice from downstairs made me jolt up on my bed.

Of course I was going for choir practice! I had been daydreaming and lost track of time.

"I am!" I yelled my reply so she could hear me.

"Well, you're running late already. I'm going grocery shopping, I can drop you off at the church first."

"Thanks mom, I'll be right down." I hurriedly got down from my bed and raided my closet.

I had already picked out my outfit mentally while I was at work, all I had to do was find the clothes, get dressed and then run downstairs before mom would leave me behind.

I chose a white off-shoulders blouse and a white and red checked skirt and sandals, complete with a red baret. I agree that my outfit choice may be for teenage girls, but don't judge me, I liked wearing whatever I was comfortable in.

Once I was dressed, I went over to my study desk and picked up my choir file bag which contained all the song sheets we used for practice. Then I was ready and headed downstairs to the living room where mom was waiting patiently, while smiling at something on her phone.

"Thanks for waiting." I said when I got to her. "Why are you smiling?"

"I was just watching a video Sophie's mom sent me of the girls. They were doing a funny dance for Brianna's social media, it's so hilarious. Maddie definitely needs dance lessons."

I giggled.

Sophie was Maddie's best friend and Brianna was Sophie's older sister, they're our neighbours, Maddie hangs out at their place most times.

Mom and I headed out to the driveway and got into the car.

"How come you're leaving this late for choir practice? It's so unlike you to be late." Mom asked as soon as she backed the car out of the driveway and on the street.

"Yeah, I just lost track of time."

"Why? Oh, don't tell me you were lost in thought. Your dad and I have told you not to worry about the bakery, I wouldn't want it affecting you in any way."

"No, no. I'm not worried about that. I mean, I am worried but you've asked me to trust you, right? That's what I'm going to do. I was just thinking about random unimportant stuff."

Technically, that was not a lie; it was unimportant stuff.

"That's fine then, just don't make it a habit. You know my stand on punctuality."

"Don't worry, I won't."

We were silent for a few minutes more but I could tell mom kept glancing at me. And no, it wasn't the side mirror she was looking at, I've known her long enough to be able to tell.

"So..." She began, pausing dramatically. Told you I could tell. "Is anyone catching your attention these days? You know, like Pastor Joseph's son?"

Really?!

"You mean Sean?"

"Yes, that boy."

"Didn't you say he's a flirt and I should stay away from him?" I accused, feigning annoyance.

"I never said you should stay away from him and he's actually a flirt, everyone knows that."

"How can you tell he's not just being nice? He's the pastor's son, his mom is the choir mistress and he's not that much older than the rest of us."

"So, you do like him?"

"I never said that, mom. I just don't think it's right to judge people without getting to know them first."

"You don't have to experience something first-hand to learn, you could learn from others mistakes. The other parents have awful things to say about that boy. Pastor's son or not, I'm not letting the wrong man anywhere close to my daughter."

"It's no use arguing with you." I said with a sigh, staring out my window.

"Dear, I don't want you to feel you have to hide things from us. We may be a little extra sometimes, but that's just because we care about you."

"Sure." Was all I said. I knew she would be dissatisfied with that response but I was annoyed and just wanted the conversation to end.

Thankfully, we got to the church soon and I quickly got down from the car, thanking mom for the ride. Then I ran for the entrance, opening the door, only to bump into someone...

Sean!

I was surprised to see him there. First, because he wasn't part of the choir and second because we had just been talking about him and I felt flustered.

He flashed me a grin as he realized it was me, giving me a once-over.

"Hey, Cindy. You look great."

There were those butterflies again. Sean was just too cute.

"H-hi, Sean. Thanks. What are you doing here?" I asked, smiling.

"Mom and Alice made me their designated driver, I was just returning Alice's phone which she forgot in my car."

Oh, that made sense.

I must have fallen asleep, because the next thing I knew, there was a soft knock on my door. The sun was lower in the sky now, casting long shadows across my room."Cindy?" It was Maria's voice. "Can I come in, dear?"I sat up and unlocked the door. Maria came in carrying a tray with tea and some sandwiches."I thought you might be hungry," she said, setting the tray down on my small table. "You missed lunch."I hadn't even realized I was hungry until I smelled the food. My stomach growled loudly."Thank you," I said, sitting down at the table. "Maria, about what happened this morning...""I know what I saw," Maria said firmly, sitting down across from me. "That girl grabbed you first. She was threatening you. You were just defending yourself."Relief flooded through me. "You believe me?""Of course, I believe you. I've been watching that, Fiona. She's trouble, that one. Always has been." Maria poured tea into my cup. "But she's clever. She knows how to make herself look like the vict

I sat on my bed, staring at the ceiling. My heart was still racing from what had happened downstairs with Fiona. The way she looked at me when I walked away from her, like she wanted to kill me. But I was tired. So tired of being pushed around, of being treated like I was nothing. I had dealt with worse people than Fiona before. Charlotte from church with her cruel whispers and judgmental looks, the rude customers at the diner who treated me like I was invisible or beneath them. I had survived all of that. I could survive her, too. I wasn't going to let her make me hide in my room like a scared little girl. This was supposed to be my safe place, at least for now. I had every right to walk around this house, to talk to whoever I wanted to talk to. The next morning, I decided I was done being afraid. I got dressed and went downstairs to the kitchen. I needed coffee, and I wasn't going to let Fiona stop me from getting it. Maria was at the stove making breakfast. She looked up whe

As I stepped out of Cindy's room and closed the door, I found Fiona standing in the hallway. She was leaning against the wall with her arms crossed, like she had been waiting for me."Finally," she said, pushing herself off the wall. "I was wondering how long you were going to spend in there with her."I was tired. Tired of fighting, tired of explaining, tired of everything. "What do you want, Fiona?""What do I want?" Her voice got louder. "I want to know what your problem is with that girl. Why are you so obsessed with her? Why can't you just focus on me?""I'm not obsessed with anyone.""Really? Because you spend more time worrying about her than you do about your own fiancée." Fiona stepped closer to me. "Do you want me to report this to your father, John? Do you want me to tell him how you're behaving?"I felt anger rise in my chest. "Are you threatening me?""I'm asking you to remember who you're supposed to marry. And if you don't start behaving yourself, I'm going to make sure

Chapter Fifty-three: John's POVI stood in the kitchen doorway, watching Cindy walk away. Something was wrong. Very wrong. The air in the kitchen felt heavy, like after a bad storm. Maria looked upset. Her hands were shaking as she stirred something on the stove. Fiona stood near the counter with a small smile on her face. That smile made me angry."What happened here?" I asked again."Nothing at all," Fiona said. She walked over to me and put her hand on my arm. "I was just talking to your little friend. She's very... interesting."Maria made a small noise. It sounded like she disagreed."Maria?" I looked at the older woman. She had been like a mother to me for years. I trusted her more than almost anyone.Maria looked at Fiona, then at me. "I think... I think maybe you should talk to Cindy," she said slowly."There's no need for that," Fiona said quickly. "We had a nice chat. Woman to woman. I think we understand each other now."I didn't believe her. Fiona's idea of a "nice chat" u

Cindy's POVBy six o'clock that evening, I couldn't stay in my room any longer. The walls felt like they were closing in on me, and Fiona's cruel words kept playing over and over in my mind. I needed to see Maria, needed someone kind and normal to talk to.I made my way down to the kitchen, hoping to find some peace there. The familiar smell of cooking food usually made me feel better, but today even that couldn't lift my spirits."Cindy!" Maria looked up from the stove with a warm smile. "Perfect timing. I was just making dinner. Are you hungry?""Not really," I said, sliding onto one of the bar stools. "But I could use the company."Maria's face grew concerned. "You look upset, mija. What happened?"Before I could answer, I heard the sharp click of heels on the marble floor. My stomach dropped. Fiona appeared in the doorway, looking perfectly put together in a different outfit than before, a tight black dress that showed off her figure."Oh, how cozy," she said, her voice dripping w

  • Mafia Boss's Angel   Chapter 51

Cindy's POVI sat on the edge of my bed, staring at the closed door of my room, my mind racing with everything that had just unfolded downstairs. The sound of that woman's voice still echoed in my ears, sharp, demanding, possessive in a way that made my skin crawl.Fiona. John's fiancée.I'd known about the engagement, of course. John had been upfront about that from the beginning, had made it clear that his father was orchestrating some kind of business arrangement. But knowing about it and seeing her in person were two entirely different things. The way she'd looked at me, like I was something she'd found on the bottom of her designer shoe. The casual cruelty in her voice when she'd dismissed me as his "little pet." The calculating way she'd sized me up, cataloging every detail like she was evaluating a potential threat.I pressed my palms against my temples, trying to ease the tension building there. This was exactly what I didn't need right now. As if being trapped in this situati
