Aunt Miranda spat in my face as she snarled, “You filthy little devil. I don’t know why my brother Gerald brought you back. He should’ve thrown you out into the streets where you belong.”

This wasn’t the first time Aunt Miranda had insulted me—I was used to it by now.

But this was the first time she did it openly… and no one stopped her.

I stumbled standing, looked at them in panic, clenching the bedsheet tightly around my body, hoping to find someone—anyone—who would believe me, who would hold me.

But…

I wasn’t used to their coldness, so their silence felt like knives piercing my heart.

They were all I had in this world—my only family.

I collapsed to the floor again, screaming that I was innocent.

“It’s not how it looks in the video! Someone edited it—someone faked it!”

Papa Gerald came back at the sound of my hysterical screams, pain and disappointment clouding his eyes… maybe even heartbreak.

For a moment, a flicker of hope lit up inside me—

But it was shattered the second he spoke.

“Basta! Enough!” he snapped. “Get out of my sight.”

“Get out of my house. You’re just like her. She gave birth to a monster before she died!” he added.

It didn’t need a genius to figure out who he meant, even though it was the first time I had ever heard anyone in this house mention my biological mother.

Like a lioness, Mama Marcellia stood between me and Papa Gerald, her voice steady, fierce, and full of defiance as she said,

“Take that back!”

Oh God, this day just keeps getting strangerier.

This was the first time I had ever heard Mama Marcellia—or anyone ever—stand up to Papa Gerald.

She had always feared him—always obeyed him blindly.

He exhaled carelessly and waved his hand.

“Can’t you see? No matter how hard we try. No matter how good we raised her…”

Then he looked at me with pure disgust and finished,

“She’ll turn out just like her.”

“Like who?”

The question slipped from my trembling lips, my voice barely holding together under the weight of the tears choking my throat.

My eyes widened in a mix of shock and fear.

It was the first time I had ever heard anyone speak about my mother this way.

Who was she? And why would they say such things about her?

Without warning, five fingers left a red mark on Papa Gerald’s cheek.

Breathing heavily, sweat dripping down her forehead, Mama Marcellia roared,

“Mila is my daughter. Do you hear me? My daughter. And I won’t let anyone speak to her that way—no one. Not even you, Lord Gerald. Do you understand?”

My jaw dropped—I hadn’t seen that coming at all.

And to make things even stranger, Papa Gerald closed his eyes for a moment… then turned and walked away, leaving us behind.

~~~
Two hours were never enough to say goodbye.
And yet, here I was at the airport, standing between Mama Marcellia, Ricardo, and Marco.
Marco was usually indifferent, cold even. But here and now, he was avoiding my eyes.
For a moment, I thought he was just like Papa Gerald—that he didn’t even want to see me anymore.
But then he shocked me…
The moment I picked up my suitcase to head toward the plane in a deadly silence, he pulled me into a tight hug… and broke down crying.
Crying like his heart was shattering.
I was stunned.
I had never seen any of Hayden's men cry—especially not Luca or Marco.
Through his sobs, he whispered,
“Forgive us… we couldn’t protect you, sorella, my little sister.”
For someone who could cut off a man's fingers in cold blood or rip his throat out of his neck with bare hands, crying during a goodbye felt…
Strange.
Unnatural, even.
Marco was the only one who didn’t accept my presence when I first moved into the mansion.
Even though he was eight years older than me but always felt distant,
deep down… I knew he loved me like a little sister.
Just a day ago, I never imagined leaving New York—let alone the entire United States.
I had never even gone out alone before; armed guards had always followed me wherever I went.
And now, here I was, heading to Italy.
A country I hold citizenship in… but have never set foot in, and know nothing about.
I cast one last glance out the plane window at New York City, watching as it slowly faded from view.
“Goodbye, New York,” I whispered, as a single hot, broken tear slid down my cheek, burning as it went.
    I stared at the streets of New York, bursting with fast-paced energy and night lights that made it seem like midday, through out the bulletproof black SUV window. Luca was driving, with Marco seated beside him. Angelo was asleep in my lap as I was questioning my decision to return to this place—which brought back painful memories of that cursed day.Was it a good decision? Or was it a mistake that would reopen wounds I’d been trying to forget?My gaze shifted from the window and locked with Luca’s captivating eyes in the rearview mirror. A shiver ran down my spine, and butterflies erupted in my stomach. How could he still affect me the way he used to be in the past?I drafted my gaze away as I sighed, pretending to be bored. I wasn’t going to let my stupid heart fall again. Not this man. Never.I heard a scoffed laugh—dry one— from Luca at my reaction.Security vehicles surrounded us from the front and the back. Why all this tight protection? I remember Papa Gerald always insisting
    Luca's eyes devoured my face as he growled, “If it weren’t for my father’s dying wish to see you, you wouldn’t see me here today, you whore.”Without thinking, I spat in his face as a single traitorous tear escaped my eye.The moment I did this, my heart sank as his grip tightened on my hair. Would he cut my tongue?He wiped his face with calmness that shocked me, then winked coldly and said, “Perfect. That’s exactly what whores do, spit.”My blood boiled and I couldn’t hold myself back anymore. I raised my hand to slap him, but he caught my wrist tightly and barked, “I don’t have time for your shit, piccolo gatto. Pack your things, we’re flying to the United States in four hours.”I hated the nickname—piccolo gatto—it reminded me of the past. I screamed at him, “Get out of my face! I’m not going anywhere with you!”He let go of my hair and replied with chilling indifference, “And I don’t have the desire to take you anywhere. Believe me, you slut. My Mila, the little Mila I loved, sa
    “Wow, Mammy! I’m excited to see what’s inside… I think it’s a car!” Angelo squealed with his usual lisp. I laughed at his clear joy and excitement.“Let’s get inside quickly, you’ll see it then. It’s too cold out here,” I said, nudging him forward with my hands full of small boxes while he insisted on carrying the large gift box himself. It was nearly larger than his size, and he almost stumbled under its weight.I frowned as I stared at the small, motorized car which now parked in the middle of my living room. Its cost was obviously too high and I doubted Teresa could afford it.I called her immediately. When I asked, she laughed and I could sense the grin on her face as she said, “I figured it might be a secret admirer. He insisted I not tell you anything unless you asked, after you’d taken the gift home.”I swallowed hard, clutching the phone so tightly my knuckles turned white. It was the exact model Angelo had wanted for his birthday. I couldn’t find it—it was only available by
My heart clenched, and my grin faded when I remembered how many times I tried to get rid of him during the first months of pregnancy. When I received the test result, the shock I felt was greater than the pain of being abandoned by the family who raised me.My heart wounds were still fresh back then, and I didn’t want a responsibility heavier than I could carry.After five months, I stopped trying to abort. I packed up all my necessary things and moved to another city. I knew for sure the Hayden would force me into a medical abortion the moment they found out about the pregnancy.     I rose from the bed after wrapping the bed cover around my bare body.I scanned the room for my clothes. They were ripped and shattered everywhere on the ground. But then I froze; a scent lingered in the air. It was familiar. The perfume somehow reminded me of Luca, my guardian angel.The cracked sound of the door opening made me jump in my place. My heart raced as Papa stormed in, his face pale like a lemon. He froze for a second. Then his gaze darkened, and stared at me from top to toe with fury, disappointment, and disgust. I was sure I wasn't going to forget that gaze for the rest of my life.Then, he looked away, clenching and unclenching his fists as if he was ready to hit. His voice was cold and detached when he growled, “Get out in front of me, now!”“Papa, I…” I stammered.“Not another word,” he roared, his voice detached with a sharp warning tone.When I didn't make a move—deadly afraid of him—he slapped me hard, turning my face to the side as I stumbled a few steps back
