CHRISTOF

My driver, stopped in front of Maison Lune, and even from the curb the place looked like it had been carved out of moonlight. Frosted glass walls rose three floors high, glowing softly from within, like the building was lit by its own private constellation. Inside, candlelight shimmered against gold-trimmed mirrors, casting warm reflections across marble floors veined with silver. There was a glowing happy anniversary signage at the entrance. I was impressed.

TANISHAAfter an agonizing day of combing through work with tears, and so much ire that almost brought me over the edge of a psychotic breakdown, I was grateful for the little gift of finally arriving home.My neighborhood in Queens was communal in the way that it was normal for people to yell greetings from troops, and have kids running around with missing shoes and half-melted ice pops. Someone was always grilling something that smells way better than whatever sad dinner I was about to make.I climbed the stairs to the apartment, keys jangling, almost in slow motion. Physical exhaustion was one thing, but mental exhaustion? That was soul shredding. I pushed open the door, aggressively removing my shoes and clothes.I found my sounding board sprawled on the couch, eating Cheetos, laughing at something on her phone. When was the last time I could relax and watch something for entertainment purposes? Definitely not since I got this job.“Hey,” I call out, locking the door behind me. “I

CHRISTOFI’d done it purposely. Not answering Tanisha’s endless calls and string of messages, not giving her a heads up about me not being home. I wanted her to drive there, punctual as ever, only to be told I wasn’t present. Let the wheels in her head turn.Last night had been great, regardless of that disastrous dinner. After gifting Pepa the cars, her laughter echoed off concrete and marble, we’d gone upstairs to the suite at the hotel. One of those rooms designed to make you forget the rest of the building existed. Floor-to-ceiling windows. Pepa had been affectionate and radiant, she didn’t hesitate to show her appreciation either. The night had been intimate, slow. Satisfying in the way that made me forget anything existed outside Pepa. Content was an understatement to how I felt when I woke up. All that fury from last night? burnt away.I came into the office feeling lighter than usual, clear-headed, balanced, almost generous. I’d expected the day to follow suit. Conclude meeti

TANISHAThe door shut behind me, sealing me inside his office like a verdict. Christof didn’t bother sitting. He stood near the window instead, hands in his pockets, posture deceptively relaxed. He turned slowly. His flared nostrils, and cold eyes, were the only indications that he was upset.“Tell me,” he said, voice almost conversational, “are you genuinely stupid… or did you try to sabotage my anniversary with Pepa on purpose?”The words knocked the breath out of me.“I—”My brain stalled. Hard. “What?”He gave me a menacing smile. “You heard me, I need an answer.”“I didn’t sabotage anything,” I said quickly. “I planned everything carefully. I—”“You intentionally booked a seafood restaurant,” he cut in. “For Pepa who doesn’t eat sea food.”The room tilted. What the hell? She doesn’t eat seafood and her favorite restaurant is a seafood restaurant? It didn’t make any sense.“What? I booked it,” I said slowly. “Because—”“Because?” His voice sharpened. “Because you’re incompetent?

TANISHAI stepped off the elevator, heels clicking against marble, and walked straight to my desk, everything was exactly as it should be. Phones rang softly, screens glowed, people moved with purpose. Except it wasn’t. Christof’s whereabout was unknown to me.I had pulled up to his house thirty minutes ago as usual. The gates opened like they always did. The driveway looked the same, clean and quiet. When I stepped out of my car, the gruff security guard requested for my name and ID, like he didn’t know who I was. He probably didn’t, I had never seen him there before. He barely glanced at my ID before shaking his head.“He’s not in this morning.”The guard never offered me any explanation beyond that. I assumed he left early to the office, even though there was no prior call or text from him. I now stared at his empty calendar block on my screen, the one that was supposed to be filled by now with his morning briefings, calls, and the inevitable reshuffling he liked to do just to remi

CHRISTOFThe Hotel Calderón was almost home to the high and mighty of Manhattan. Celebrities, politicians, CEOs, people with status and immense wealth, were the only ones Hotel Calderón opened it’s doors to. Limestone exterior, low lighting, heavily armed security. No paparazzi, no noise. Just quiet wealth and deliberate privacy. Perfect.Pepa was still talking when we pulled in, something about how suspiciously calm I’d been since dinner. She she stopped when I took her hand and produced the blindfold.“Oh,” she said slowly. “Christof Gustavo, you’ve already given me more than enough.”“Not nearly enough.”She laughed under her breath, letting me tie it myself. I did it carefully, fingers brushing her hair, adjusting the knot so it wouldn’t pull. She trusted me enough not to peek.Inside, the garage smelled faintly of clean concrete and polish. The lighting was cool, and indirect, designed to reveal without overwhelming. I paused us where I wanted her, then caught the attention of a

I was impressed. The maître d’ bowed himself in half when we entered.“Mr. Gustavo, Miss. Pepa, welcome to Maison Lune. And happy anniversary.”I’d booked the entire space, every table empty except the one dressed for two at the center of the room, surrounded by cascading white orchids and flickering candles. No guests, no noise, just us.Pepa clutched my arm as we were being escorted inside. “Christof… you rented out Maison Lune?”“For you,” I said. She smiled nervously, glancing around, at the sculpted marble oyster bar, the subtle aqu
