MasukI felt my breath stopped for a while, and time seemed to get slow. The club’s loud music felt faded into the background. The only thing I could hear was the dull thump of my own heartbeat. His gray eyes were about to land on me, and I felt nervous. For a minute, I didn’t want him to see me, here, in this setting. My fingers curled tightly around the glass in my hand.
And then, using my quick reflexes, I turned away.
I was Mafia Princess after all, and Papa taught me all the skills required for my safety.
I took a deep breath, and didn’t dare to turn back for a moment. Elara caught my actions. And she gave me a confused glance but didn’t question it. She asked in concern, “Val, are you okay?”
“Of course.” My voice came out steady, though my heart wasn’t. “Why wouldn’t I be?”
Elara raised an eyebrow but didn’t push further. Thank God.
Still, my eyes betrayed me. Even as I pretended to sip my drink and listen to her chatter, my eyes followed its way back to him. He looked so hot standing there in his tailored black sipping his drink. Rowan and Axel talked beside him, but his attention didn’t seem to be fully on them.
I wondered if he was still thinking about me. I could feel the butterflies fly in stomach all the way to my heart.
But then I saw. A woman.
She appeared out of nowhere. She had long and slender legs. Her Blonde hair shone brightly under the neon lights. Her dress clung to her curves like it was made for her. Without hesitation, she leaned closer to Raven Blackwood, and rested her a perfectly manicured hand on his arm.
He didn’t pull away.
I felt the sharp sting of jealousy that made my stomach twist. She whispered something to him, and although I couldn’t hear a word, his lips moved in response. He smiled a little, although it was not quite a smile, but it was enough to make my chest ache.
In an instant, thousands of questions formed in my head. I wondered her name and her relationship with him. Raven Blackwood never let a woman talk to him, let alone have her so close to him. It didn’t take an idiot to guess what their relationship was. I realized I needed to leave. I couldn’t just stand there and do nothing after watching him with another woman.
My heart broke in millions of pieces. I turned to Elara, and forced my voice to stay calm, “Elara, I want to go home.”
“What?!” She blinked in confusion. “We just got here.”
“I know.” I tried to smile, but it didn’t reach my eyes. “I’m just not feeling it. Please?”
Before she could argue, Trance returned with our drinks. “Fruit punch for the ladies.” He smirked handing us the glasses. “And yes, I made sure there’s nothing else in them.”
Elara rolled her eyes. “You’re no fun.”
“I’m the only reason you’re in here without getting kicked out. You’re welcome.” Trance replied.
I barely heard them. My mind was still on Raven Blackwood and that woman. Did he know her? Was she his date? The questions swirled in my head, making it impossible to focus.
“We’ll finish our drinks and then leave,” I murmured, not trusting myself to say more.
But just as I lifted the glass to my lips, a loud voice interrupted.
“Well, well, what do we have here?”
Three guys approached us, their smiles were dripping with cockiness. They looked around the college students, one wore a leather jacket, the other a tight shirt that strained against his muscles. The third, clearly the loudest, had bleach blond hair and a grin that sent a chill down my spine.
“Ladies, are you lost?” Blondie asked, his eyes sweeping over me with an unsettling gleam. “Or did you come here looking for some fun?”
Trance immediately stepped ahead of me. “Back off.”
Blondie’s grin widened as he looked at Trance. “Relax, man. We’re just being friendly.” His gaze lingered on Elara, then it shifted back to me. “Especially with this one. What’s your name, sweetheart?”
I didn’t answer.
“Not interested,” Trance said firmly. “Move along.”
But they didn’t. Instead, Blondie stepped even closer, his fingers pressed against my arm. “Come on. Don’t be shy.”
My stomach twisted, but I forced myself to stay calm. “I said, I’m not interested.” My voice was low, I just needed to go home. Not create any drama here for god sake. If Papa got to know where I was today, I would be done for.
“Oh, feisty. I like that.” His fingers traced an invisible line down my arm, sending a wave of discomfort through me. “Maybe you just need a little convincing.”
Elara also snapped in anger. “She said no, asshole!” Her voice was louder than the music, which caught a few curious glances from nearby tables.
Blondie’s grin faltered for a second, but he quickly recovered. He laughed like it was all a joke.
“You girls are no fun.” He stepped back, raising his hands in surrender, but it felt like he was mocking us. “But hey, if you change your mind…”
I didn’t wait for him to finish the sentence. I quickly grabbed Elara’s hand and turned away. I wanted to be anywhere but here.
But before I could take another step, the music suddenly stopped. And Club’s light turned from neon to white, lighting the whole space instantly.
I paused in my steps, and blinked my eyes to adjust to the light. People had stopped dancing. Conversations were stopped. It was as if the entire club held its breath.
‘What was happening?’ I silently wonder to myself.
In the utter silence, I heard footsteps. They were heavy and slow.
‘Please not Raven. Not him.’ I prayed in my heart, it could be anyone, but him, right now. But clearly, luck was not on my side. I heard a rough voice, “What’s happening here.”
I didn’t need to turn around to look for the source of this voice. I knew it in my heart, it was Raven Blackwood’s voice. It had been years since I last heard him, and now I heard it, up so close. I couldn’t help but feel my heart would leap out of my body if this continued.
In the next second, another voice came. If I wasn’t wrong, it was Blondie’s voice. He stammered. “Hey, man.. We were just….”
My grip tightened on Elara’s arm. I didn’t dare to either leave or turn back. Leaving was dangerous, so was staying. Either way, he could recognize me. So, I stood my ground, not doing anything.
“You touched her,” Raven Blackwood’s voice came. It was calm, too calm like the ocean before Tsunami. And that was what made it terrifying.
“It.. It was nothing. A joke.. Just a joke..” Blondie’s voice cracked, his bravado crumbled into air.
“Leave.” Raven Blackwood only said one word.
Blondie didn’t need to be told twice. With a little apology, he ran out of the club, and his other two friends followed behind.
I felt blood rush to my brain as I felt the tap on my right shoulder. “Valerie.”
If Raven Blackwood’s voice was scary with Blondie just now, it was even more terrifying as he called her name. What the heck? What was up with his difference in treatment? At least he should talk warmly to her. But it was cold. My heart dropped into the abyss. I turned around slowly, almost Robotically. My head hung low. I didn’t dare to look up at his face. I knew it would be even more scary than his voice.
Earlier that day:Valerie Thorne’s POV:After getting multiple calls from Elara, I finally focused on the report files. The more I read them, the more I knew I had to personally visit certain people, both at sea and grounds. The work was being delayed, followed by some excuses and some casualties. They even mentioned that some people wanted to join other groups. I needed to meet them personally. But Raven was still not here, and I couldn’t bring Reign with me to certain places.Still, I made some calls to Eliot, telling him to manage them for as long as he could. After I was done, I made some more plans to deal with them and several other matters. From time to time, I talked to Reign. She was being cheerful lately, enjoying her company, rather than depending on me, even though she was just almost five months old.Taking a good look at the weather, which was not hot, not cold, just perfect for spending the day out, I decided to work under the shade of a tree today. As Reign lay in her
“Answer what he asked,” One of the burly men pressed against his shoulders. His body shook at the burly man’s touch, and he crawled to my side, “I am sorry. I shouldn’t have done that. I just wanted to scare them.”I didn’t interrupt as he cried.“I just… I just wanted them to scare them. I didn’t know those people would escalate that much,” He continued.“You didn’t know?” My brows raised. He shook his head, “I didn’t… I am telling the truth. If I knew… If I knew, I wouldn’t have done this.”“Do you realise how many people died that night?” I asked a moment later. He lowered his face for a moment as he answered, “I am sorry.”“What does your sorry do now?” I roared. For one second, I could believe he was innocent. Apparently, he was, from the way he was behaving right now. It didn’t look like he was lying. Either there was a bigger play behind the scenes, or he was a good actor. But it didn’t matter anymore. What was done had already been done. Nothing could be reversed now.He didn’
The night was heavy. When we finally left the cruise, it was already morning. By the time we reached a safe place, I had lost too much blood. The last memory before closing my eyes was seeing Drake for two seconds. His figure was blurry, but I knew he was there. When I regained consciousness, twenty-eight hours had passed. The smell of antiseptic filled my senses as I slowly opened my eyes. White walls. Plenty of machines were surrounding my body. I glanced out of the window and blinked a few times to clear my vision.A few minutes passed before I noticed two nurses entering my room. They took the reading first without saying a word or change of expression, seeing I was awake. After they were done, they walked out.A moment later, one of the nurses entered the room again, and this time she had an elderly-looking doctor by her side. I didn’t hear what she said clearly, but the doctor frowned deeper. He slowly nodded at her and walked to my side, “How are you feeling now?”“It’s alright
The thought barely processed in my mind when I heard another round of bullets roaring in the air. I didn’t let myself hesitate and slowly bent down to grab the fallen gun. Then, immediately, I rolled behind a steel pillar for my cover to protect myself as the bullet passed the spot where I had been standing a second ago. The air was thick with the smoke of gunfire. The force of impact vibrated through the pillar and then into my shoulder. “They are tightening the circle,” I muttered under my breath.I peeked out slightly to track their movements. Next, I noticed two men on the upper deck. One of them was standing closer to the stairs. The other one was covering him from the open side. There were snipers above and shooters below. It was a perfect kill box.My jaw tightened slightly. It was not bad, but it was not enough. I moved as my chance came. I fired twice in a quick move. I missed the first shot intentionally, which forced the man near the stairs to shift from his position. The
I didn’t respond immediately. I let his words sit between us. It was as if he was offering me something, like this wasn’t anything but a test again.“When?” I asked calmly.“Tonight,” He replied calmly. That fast? Considering the time durations he had given me tasks, it was quicker this time. I didn’t mind it and asked with a sharp gaze, “Where?”“It’s a high level meeting on a private cruise. They are all powerful people, and it includes bigger money but also bigger risks.”“And bigger betrayal,” I added. He smiled faintly as he nodded, “Now you are thinking correctly.”I leaned forward slightly, resting my elbows on knees, “What’s the catch here?”“There is always a catch,” He began in a smooth tone, “The deal is unstable. Those people don’t fully trust each other. One wrong move could lead to bigger chaos.”“And you still want the deal to get done through me?” I asked.“I would like to see you survive it,” He corrected. He would like to see me survive it. His tone said he had the c
He was standing near the same balcony where we met for the first time that day. His back was facing the hall, and the way the city lights reflected on his body, it made him look even more still and controlled. It was like he hadn’t moved from his position at all.“You’re late,” He said without turning to look at me.“It’s done,” I replied calmly. Then slowly, he turned his body to face me. His gaze scanned over my body, checking for any sign of struggle or so, but there was no visible expression on my face.“That was not a simple task,” He murmured under his breath.“It was never supposed to be,” I correctly answered. For a moment, heavy silence lingered between us. Then he slowly nodded, “Good.”Good! That one word carried more meaning than praise. It meant I passed enough to enter his inner world. It meant I didn’t fail his expectation. It was enough for now. He walked past me and stopped just close enough for his voice to be barely audible to me, “Do you know why I chose you?” He a
Raven Blackwood’s POV:“Sir, there is a problem,” Eliot’s voice came through the speaker as soon as I picked up the call.“What happened?” I asked, keeping my voice low, as I watched Valerie take a seat by the pool.“It’s about Elvis. He is at the bar. He doesn’t look right to me,” Eliot’s troubled
Eliot started his research, and it was twenty minutes or so later that he spoke up, “I have found everything.”“Begin,” I gestured to him to proceed with everything he knew.“John White. He is the leader of the Southern group. He started taking over local gangs when he was just seventeen. He has qu
Some minutes later, Eliot spoke up with a heavy tone, “Sir. We found nothing. We used all our sources, but we got nothing.”I nodded and looked at Jeremy. He sighed with a deep breath as well, “Same. They said the model number couldn’t be identified.”I nodded, “Click some close shots of her face a
“I… I have no idea,” He shook his head.“You don’t?” I repeated“I really don’t. Lately, he has been too unpredictable.” Nate said in hesitation.I watched Nate for a few seconds. Even if there was something, I knew he wouldn’t talk it out. So, it was pointless to ask him anyway. I turned my head t
