Elle is admiring herself in the mirror. Her floral pink dress compliments her sweet looking face and her long dark hair is tied in an elegant bun. The jewelry she’s wearing has been gifted to her by Hector, amongst it a beautiful blue diamond placed on her neck’s choker.
“You look beautiful, madam!” Mrs. Lee, Elle’s personal maid, praises her. “Sir Hector is going to be very pleased.”
“He will be,” Elle smiles. The makeup is light but she looks gorgeous. It’s her day and this is the moment she has been waiting for. Marrying Hector, the man who will make her very happy.
He will make me happy, she tells herself but there’s a stinging pain in her heart. As much as she tries to avoid it, the pain won’t go away.
“You’ll make a fine wife to him,” Mrs. Lee goes on. “Far better than that…that one!”
Mrs. Lee shudders at the thought of Scarlett. Ever since they were young, Scarlett has always tried to harm Elle. It’s Elle’s benevolent heart which always ignored Scarlett’s mistakes.
“Please don’t talk about her like that,” Elle reproaches in a soft tone. “She’s my sister and I’m deeply hurt that she’s not here.”
“You’re very kind but she won’t show up. She’ll be damned if she does!”
Elle shakes her head but says nothing. It’s true. Scarlett wouldn’t dare to show up. She has heard that her sister has been released but the woman won’t show herself out of shame. After all, she’s the scorned and humiliated woman while Elle is the heroine of this story. Elle is everything Scarlett cannot be. Sweet, innocent, and an angel. Everyone loves her.
Even Hector. And so does…
No! She tells herself. I can’t think of him!
Another maid enters the room. “The guests have arrived, Ms. Swanson,” the maid informs her.
“I’ll be downstairs in a minute,” Elle tells her. She turns back to face the mirror. Nothing will smear her happiness tonight. Nothing.
Meanwhile, the part time workers are lined up along the dinner table. Each of them is holding a tray full of food, ready to serve. Scarlett is standing amongst them, wearing a maid’s uniform. Her hair is tied into a ponytail and even though she wore no makeup, her beauty makes her stand out. Mrs. Miller is studying all of them and finally decides that Scarlett should be among those who will directly serve the important guests.
“Don’t mess up,” she tells the maids. “This is an important party and if anything happens, I’ll be cutting the cost from your wages!”
The part timers nod. Scarlett doesn’t bat an eye. She’s here for something else.
The guests have arrived at the lavish ball. Golden lights are shining all throughout the hall with a large, open space in the middle for the guests to stand on and mingle with each other. The walls are painted purple and silver with matching balloons hanging from the ceiling. Everyone is impressed by the luxurious decorations but they’re also whispering amongst themselves.
“How’s Hawkins affording all this?” One guest murmurs.
“I heard that he’s been into shady dealings lately,” another guest mutters. “The project they got. It brought in a lot of money but there’s more. He’s been dealing with the Eastern blocs lately. They’re looking for a smuggling point and this project will be crucial.”
“Shh! Don’t say all that. Hawkins might hear and make you disappear!”
The whispers of the guests don’t go unheard. Scarlett offers the guests drinks but is hearing snippets of the conversations too.
Eastern bloc? What does all this mean? She wonders. What project?
Before she can hear anything else, the lights dim and a spotlight falls on the top of the staircase. Scarlett’s lips thin when she sees Elle walking down the stairs with Hector, hand in hand. She looks radiant in the pink dress, her smile wide. Hector is also looking handsome in his dark blue jacket and sleek hair. Both of them look like a couple who sprang out from a fairy tale.
“She sure is a modern day Cinderella,” one guest remarks.
Yes, her stepsister is Cinderella. The very thought makes Scarlett want to vomit.
And Hector…
Her wretched heart is overwhelmed by him. She can’t stand the sight of him in someone else’s arms. He was supposed to be her husband, the love of her life. They could’ve had a wonderful life together, filled with love and joy. For years, Scarlett planned her revenge but she didn’t expect to be overcome with so many emotions.
Tears sting her eyes and she quickly turns away.
“You look beautiful, my love,” Hector whispers in Elle’s ear. She smiles and blushes, yet her heart isn’t in it.
They start to mingle with the guests, not noticing Scarlett in the crowd. She tries to calm her heart. Suddenly, the thought of Hector being so close to her is making her tremble and weak.
She quickly steps away from the crowd and heads towards a secluded part of the mansion. Once out of sight, she breaks down into tears.
“Why…why Hector…” she sobs to herself. She’s Scarlett D’arcy. The mighty and fearsome woman who had the world at her feet. Everyone was envious of her.
And she’s weak when it comes to love.
“Why couldn’t you love me?” She cries. “Why?”
CREAK!
Scarlett is startled when she hears the sound and turns around. To her shock, there’s another person who’s watching her. A person who’s on a wheelchair.
She slowly looks closer only to be astonished.
“Amelia?” She whispers.
Sitting on a wheelchair is a girl around Scarlett’s age. She has the same blonde hair as Hector only with gentler features and a kind demeanor. But the girl isn’t moving at all. Instead, her head is tilted to her side and she’s staring into space with no inclination of her sanity. Drool is dripping from her open mouth but Amelia doesn’t process anything.
“Amelia!” Scarlett gasps and is instantly by the paraplegic girl’s side.
This is Amelia Hawkins, the only sister of Hector and Troy Hawkins. She was once Scarlett’s best friend and the only person who supported her against Elle.
And Scarlett was framed for her state.
“I’m so sorry…” Scarlett bemoans. “I’m so sorry…”
She’s crying even harder at the sight of her best friend. What happened to her!
“Amelia…can you hear me?” Scarlett begs. “Please…just talk!”
But Amelia remains silent, her brain not even comprehending that her best friend is with her. Scarlett is too sad, too broken by all this. Hector getting remarried, Amelia’s state, and her mom’s death. All those years in jail and yet, Scarlett never felt so helpless.
“I’m so sorry!” She pleads. “Just come back…come back…”
“You’re not sorry yet, b*tch!”
Scarlett’s blood freezes when she hears the voice. She slowly turns around to find Hector standing there, smiling like a demon.
“I knew it was you!” He sneers. “I thought I saw you back there.”
“Hello ex-husband,” Scarlett says in a cold tone. “Missed me?”
A sleek Maybach stops in front of the Hawkins’ mansion. Everyone in the vicinity instantly breaks into whispers when they see Ryder Rochester coming out of it, looking sleek and handsome than ever. His red hair is brushed back and his sharp eyes are twinkling as if he’s expecting something exciting to happen.“Isn’t that Ryder Rochester?” One guest whispers.“A Rochester at Hawkins’ party? He won’t be pleased!” Another guest gossips. Ryder ignores them and simply walks towards the hall where the guests are enjoying themselves. His eyes fall on the dark haired woman in the middle who’s wearing a pink dress and is entertaining the guests at her own engagement party.Elle is sweetly smiling at the business associates, but not engaging in conversations with them. Their business talks are boring to her.“Congratulations.”Her smile freezes when she hears the voice. She slowly turns around to find herself face to face with Ryder. Her heart skips several beats when he steps closer.“What ar
*A Few Hours Ago*Ryder is studying the woman in front of him. She’s not broken and is completely calm but he can see the redness in her eyes. There’s no doubt that she must have been crying for hours. Scarlett is staring at the paper in front of her. This is the only way for her. She has little money and nothing else other than a desire for revenge. The gap between her and the Hawkins family is now starkly clear to her. Without power, she can’t take them down. They’ve taken her soul, her happiness, and her peace. She can live without them. But what they did to her mother is inexcusable. There’s no way Isabella would kill herself. Her mother was not like that. She picks up the pen to sign the marriage contract but Ryder speaks up.“Think about it,” he warns her. “If you sign that, you’ll have to live with me. There’s no love, nor any duty in this marriage. You’ll get revenge but it might not be what you want. You’ll be trapped with me in a very dangerous world.”“I don’t care about l
The party ended abruptly and all the guests went home. Hector has strengthened the security around the mansion and is paranoid. All the guards are on alert, with orders to kill anyone caught trespassing. “How the f*ck did his men enter my mansion?” Hector growls. He slams his fists hard on the table. Palmer and Jim are standing in front of him. Hector is glaring at them so Palmer clears his throat to speak.“We have checked every CCTV camera and saw nothing suspicious,” he states in a matter-of-fact way. “The mansion was well secured and-”SMASH!A vase comes flying at him but he calmly steps aside and lets the object smash against the wall, breaking into tiny pieces. Hector’s fury is through the roof but Palmer is unaffected while Jim is terrified. The wrath of their boss is exploding.“MY F*CKING ENEMIES GOT INTO THE MANSION!” He screams. “THAT TOO ON MY ENGAGEMENT! AND…AND…”He’s f*cking my ex-wife! He thinks bitterly. The image of Scarlett and Ryder is flashing through his eyes a
Scarlett is fidgeting in the hallway of the Rochester mansion. She’s feeling extremely nervous and suddenly questioning herself whether she did the right thing by announcing her marriage to Hector. There’s no doubt in her mind that he’s going ballistic at that very moment but he doesn’t scare her. She’s more worried about Elle’s reaction. No one knows Elle the way she does. Beneath the kind facade is a completely deranged person who will go to any lengths to get what she wants. But Elle has Hector now. Scarlett has nothing to fear from her, right?I just need to find the truth behind James and mom’s deaths, she tells herself. Her thoughts are interrupted by a maid.“Your luggage has been kept in the master bedroom, madam,” the maid informs her.Master bedroom…there’s no doubt about it. Even if it’s a contract marriage, Ryder is still her husband and she has to stay with him in one bedroom. The thought scares her but she swallows down her fears. She’ll have to cater to his whims even a
Scarlett slowly wakes up only to be momentarily blinded by the dazzling sunlight. She slowly sits up, confused. Her eyes are half closed and she sleepily yawns. The jail doesn’t have much sunlight, she thinks to herself. And why is the ground so soft? She touches what she expects to be the floor but to her surprise, she feels a soft satin mattress. Realizing that something is amiss, she opens her eyes. “Where the hell am I?” she asks in astonishment. It takes her several seconds to realize that she’s no longer in jail. The events of the last day come back to her. She was released from jail, her mother died, her ex husband and her step sister are engaged and Scarlett is now… “Shit!” She gasps and looks around for Ryder. She’s no longer a prisoner but is the wife of the country’s most ruthless mafia lord! “Did he not return home?” she wonders out loud. The other side of the bed doesn’t look as if it’s been slept in. There’s no sign of him anywhere. Scarlett gets off the bed an
A shabby looking man in his early forties is grumbling inside the posh apartment. He yawns and scratches his pot belly, feeling annoyed. “Where the f*ck is my pizza?” He growls. His stomach growls in hunger. He ordered pizza from a pizzeria over an hour ago but the darn thing isn’t here yet! Vasco Martinez is not a patient man and he’s even more cranky when hungry. His phone rings and Vasco lets out a groan. “This damn brat,” he mutters. He may loathe Hector Hawkins but the dumba** is the boss’ son.“What is it?” He grumbles on the phone.“I need you to look into something!” Hector instantly demands. “I want you to investigate Scarlett’s activities. What she’s doing, where she’s going, and everything she does with Ryder!”“Huh? That ex-wife of yours?” Vasco frowns at the request. Everyone knows that Hector sent Scarlett to jail and absolutely hates her. He picks up the newspaper from a table and reads the front page. The picture of Ryder Rochester and Scarlett D’arcy are on the fro
HIs lips crash onto hers, engaged in a fiery passion. Scarlett is taken aback by his actions, her mind temporarily overwhelmed by his musky scent. His lips are surprisingly soft and taste sweet. He gently grazes her tongue with his, making Scarlett’s stomach flutter. But the warmth stays only for an instant. It dawns on her that Ryder stole her first kiss.Even though she had been married to Hector for three years, he never kissed her, let alone touch her. And now this strange man was kissing her. Was it loneliness or just a fleeting feeling but at that moment, she wanted him to keep going. The years in jail have only increased her isolation and now that she’s back in the real world, she just wants to feel again. Even if it means kissing Ryder Rochester..Ryder didn’t expect her to kiss him back but she did. To his own astonishment, it isn’t a bad feeling. Her damp hair is tangled in his fingers and he can feel her cheeks warming up. He deepens the kiss, their tongues wrapped in a fi
Kat sighs inwardly but keeps a poker face. The teacher is rambling on and on about computers but she doesn’t care much. Her knowledge on technology is far advanced than high school stuff. “Troy, are we up for the party tonight at your place?” a girl whispers to someone at the back.Kat’s ears perk up. A party?A blonde haired boy looks at the girl. His dark eyes are sharp and brooding, his hair tousled. The boy is quite tall with a muscular build thanks to playing soccer. He rolls his eyes and addresses the girl.“Things aren’t going well at my place,” he tells her. “I’m not gonna host any parties there.”“But your dad is away and your brother is busy with his fiance!” The pretty brunette girl pouts. Her name is Moira Matthews and she’s one of the most popular girls in the school. Every guy is mad for her but she has her eyes on Troy only.Troy, on the other hand, couldn’t care less about her. Moira leans so close to him that her arm is touching his. Troy feels a little annoyed and
