SMACK!
The sound of the slap echoes around the lavish mansion. A beautiful brunette is standing in the middle of the living room, her pearly cheek marred by the red palm print. Her ocean blue eyes are now red with fury and anger, stinging with tears. She’s only twenty one years old, already the wife of the most powerful man in the country. But she’s only his wife in name; this slap is the proof of it.
The slap hurts her pride and while her heart is bleeding with sadness, she stands tall to defy the ones who are bringing her down.
“You evil woman!” The handsome man whispers at her, barely containing his fury. The blonde man is in his mid twenties. His dark eyes are sharp and his handsome face is contorted into fury. The sight of this woman disgusts him.
This is Hector Hawkins. Son of Vincent Hawkins and his heir.
So this is the reality, right dear husband? Scarlett D’arcy thinks in spite. Oh the irony!
“How dare you hurt Ella?” He screams at her. “She’s your sister!”
“She’s a homewrecker!” Scarlett snarls. “She’s sleeping with you behind my back and even got pregnant with your child! Whereas you wouldn’t even touch me for the years we’ve been married!”
SMACK!
Hector slaps her again.
“Are you really gonna put all the blame on her?” He growls. “You attacked her that night and caused her to miscarry! And not only that, you even killed James! How could you?”
There’s a slight whimper but it’s not from Scarlett. Ella Swanson is standing at the doorway, her innocent eyes filled with despair. She looks weak and the attack on her has put a toll on her.
“Sister,” Ella pants. “You hate me. I know that and I’m sorry for the grief I’ve caused you. But…but what did my father do to you? He was innocent! Why did you kill him?”
Ella bursts into tears. Hector rushes to aid her while Scarlett stands there in silence. Her face is unreadable.
“I didn’t say anything when you tricked Hector into marrying you!” Ella sobs. “You and stepmother conspired to throw me out of my own home! But my father loved you. He loved both of us equally! Then why did you kill him? And Amelia…poor Amelia is now paralyzed! All because of you!”
Scarlett’s lips are quivering. Yes, she conspired against Ella to win Hector’s love. Her heart is as black as the night and she knows it. She has done despicable things to win over Hector.
But she’s not a murderer.
“I didn’t kill him,” Scarlett finally breaks the silence. “I didn’t kill James…”
I can’t kill him, she adds in her thoughts. Her fury is now replaced with grief for her stepfather who was always kind to her. If there’s one person she couldn’t hurt, it was him.
“You killed him and hurt my sister!” Hector growls at her. “And now you’ll pay for it…”
Suddenly, a group of policemen barge into the mansion. Scarlett is shocked to see them.
“No!” She yells. “I didn’t kill him! There’s no evidence of it-”
“You forgot, darling,” Hector says in a spiteful tone. “I’m the one who will decide your fate now. You’ll rot in prison and there’s nothing you can do! Take her away!”
The cops grab Scarlett and she protests. She can’t go to jail! She must find the culprit!
“NO!” She screams. “HECTOR, I DIDN’T DO IT! I SWEAR!”
Her pride is stripped off and she’s panicking. She didn’t kill her stepfather but her protests fell on deaf ears.
She’s Scarlett D’arcy, the top female executive in the country. Her abilities brought Hawkins Group immense success and she’s the envy of many. She’s the beautiful one, the ambitious one and yet…yet, her husband pines for Ella. He loves Ella, not Scarlett. To him, Ella is his princess, his Cinderella and Scarlett is the wicked stepsister.
And now, the stepsister has fallen.
“HECTOR, YOU’LL REGRET THIS!” Scarlett vows. “YOU DON’T KNOW HER-”
But Hector is busy tending to Ella. His eyes are filled with love and wonder for her. He won’t look at his wife.
The last thing Scarlett remembers as she’s being dragged away by the police, is her stepfather’s words.
“Scarlett, your name is beautiful,” he had once said. “Just like the color, Scarlet. People say it’s the color of anger but the flip side of anger is passion. You’re passionate about your dreams and you hide unconditional love. You’re not rude, you’re just honest. Like the color, you’ll also spread love. So what if people say nasty things to you? I know you’ll achieve everything you want and never give up on your loved ones. Just have faith in yourself, okay?”
Have faith. As the weeks go by, Scarlett remains silent. She doesn’t flinch nor beg. Her judgment is swift and she’s sentenced to three years in prison for her crimes. There’s no direct evidence of her guilt but Hector’s influence ensured she’s locked up.
All Scarlett does is repeat those words in her head.
I’m Scarlett D’arcy, she says to herself. And I get what I want.
…
*Three years later*
The door opens and Scarlett steps out into the sun. The brightness almost blinds her. She’s only carrying one small backpack which has a few clothes and basic items. There’s a little bit of money in it as well which she saved up in jail where she also worked as a part-time tutor for young inmates.
“Here’s your ID,” a grumpy jailor tells her. Scarlett nods and takes her ID card.
“There’s also a phone left for you,” the jailor says. Scarlett doesn’t say anything but accepts the phone. She knows who gave it to her.
As soon as she takes it, the phone rings.
“Hi hi!” A cheerful voice greets her from the other end. Scarlett winces. It’s him again.
“Where’s the car?” Scarlett demands.
“How mean! Aren’t you gonna greet me or something? After all, I’ve been helping you for three years. You’d have been dead meat in prison.”
“I don’t even know who you are!” Scarlett snaps. “I didn’t ask for your help at all!”
“Too bad,” he says. “Because now you need my help more than ever.”
A car stops in front of her and an elderly driver comes out of it. He opens the passenger door for her.
“Get into the car, Scarlett,” the man on the other hand tells her. “If you want revenge, this is your best bet. See ya in an hour!”
Scarlett sighs and hangs up the phone. She debates with herself for a while before muttering, “F*ck it.”
She gets into the car and drives off.
Meanwhile, somewhere deep in the city, a man hangs up the phone. He’s sitting on a couch with a drink in his hand. His face is half hidden in the dark but he’s smiling.
There’s a document in front of him; a marriage certificate.
A young teenager enters the room and sighs. “Are you really gonna get through with this?” She groans. “She’s Hector Hawkins’ ex-wife and one of the members of the enemy clan! Whatcha even thinking?”
The man looks up, his hazel eyes twinkling with mischief.
“I’m thinking of what Cinderella’s stepsister will be like,” he says. “Did jail turn her into a meek kitty or is the wildcat a tigress now? Either way, I think I’m gonna have a lot of fun.”
The teenager winces. Weirdo, she sighs inwardly.
The car stops in front of a large, Italian styled mansion. Scarlett stares at the place, quite impressed by its asymmetric massing of the towers which are standing high, looking elegant. The garden is luscious with exotic flowers and a marbled pavement is snaking towards the front door which is made of posh mahogany wood. “This way,” the driver respectfully tells her. Scarlett hesitates but follows him into the mansion. She’s led to a beautiful hallway which is illuminated with golden lights. A staircase spirals its way from the upper floors to the lower one while a magnificent fountain is placed in the middle of it. The walls are painted in light silver color and there are matching furniture sets around her. Scarlett has been to many mansions but this one has a warm touch to it as if the owner has intricately detailed them on his own. Before she can marvel at the beauty, she hears a pair of footsteps approaching. To her surprise, a girl of around eighteen is ascending the stairs.
She hails a cab and heads straight for her mother’s house in Manhattan. Her mother, Isabella, visited her quite a few times after the trial but Scarlett forbade her from visiting. She doesn’t want Isabella to worry about her and jeopardize her health. After all, one of Isabella’s feet is upside down and her mother has to walk in a limp. Seeing her worry makes Scarlett feel guilty. The cab stops in front of an upscale apartment where Scarlett used to live with her family before her marriage. She gets out of the cab and stares at the building. It hasn’t changed a bit. The unique architecture has been created by her stepfather, James Swanson, who was a renowned architect. Isabella had fallen in love with the lonely widower and they bonded over their partners.Scarlett never knew her dad because he left her and her mother before Scarlett was born. For the first fifteen years of her life, she was raised by Isabella. They weren’t rich but they had each other. When Isabella fell in love with
Two men are hurriedly walking along the long corridor of the Hawkins’ mansion, looking very worried. They pass by the busy servants who are working to set up the decorations for the engagement party that night. There’s a line of part timers outside who are waiting to get their shifts but the men are not concerned with the party. They’re well dressed in suits and look extremely professional. One of them is a stoic man in his fifties with gray hair and a dignified look. The other man is in his late twenties with thick black hair and a freckled face which is very nervous. “Mr. Palmer,” the younger man addresses his boss. “The CEO won’t be happy with this news. Shouldn’t we wait until tomorrow? He’s gonna be furious!” “There’s no other option, Jim,” Palmer states in a curt manner. The older man is Jeremy Palmer, the senior secretary to Hector Hawkins while the young man is Jim Porter, Jeremy’s underling. Jeremy is a no-nonsense man with strict work ethics. He has been working for Ha
Elle is admiring herself in the mirror. Her floral pink dress compliments her sweet looking face and her long dark hair is tied in an elegant bun. The jewelry she’s wearing has been gifted to her by Hector, amongst it a beautiful blue diamond placed on her neck’s choker. “You look beautiful, madam!” Mrs. Lee, Elle’s personal maid, praises her. “Sir Hector is going to be very pleased.”“He will be,” Elle smiles. The makeup is light but she looks gorgeous. It’s her day and this is the moment she has been waiting for. Marrying Hector, the man who will make her very happy. He will make me happy, she tells herself but there’s a stinging pain in her heart. As much as she tries to avoid it, the pain won’t go away. “You’ll make a fine wife to him,” Mrs. Lee goes on. “Far better than that…that one!”Mrs. Lee shudders at the thought of Scarlett. Ever since they were young, Scarlett has always tried to harm Elle. It’s Elle’s benevolent heart which always ignored Scarlett’s mistakes.“Please d
A sleek Maybach stops in front of the Hawkins’ mansion. Everyone in the vicinity instantly breaks into whispers when they see Ryder Rochester coming out of it, looking sleek and handsome than ever. His red hair is brushed back and his sharp eyes are twinkling as if he’s expecting something exciting to happen.“Isn’t that Ryder Rochester?” One guest whispers.“A Rochester at Hawkins’ party? He won’t be pleased!” Another guest gossips. Ryder ignores them and simply walks towards the hall where the guests are enjoying themselves. His eyes fall on the dark haired woman in the middle who’s wearing a pink dress and is entertaining the guests at her own engagement party.Elle is sweetly smiling at the business associates, but not engaging in conversations with them. Their business talks are boring to her.“Congratulations.”Her smile freezes when she hears the voice. She slowly turns around to find herself face to face with Ryder. Her heart skips several beats when he steps closer.“What ar
*A Few Hours Ago*Ryder is studying the woman in front of him. She’s not broken and is completely calm but he can see the redness in her eyes. There’s no doubt that she must have been crying for hours. Scarlett is staring at the paper in front of her. This is the only way for her. She has little money and nothing else other than a desire for revenge. The gap between her and the Hawkins family is now starkly clear to her. Without power, she can’t take them down. They’ve taken her soul, her happiness, and her peace. She can live without them. But what they did to her mother is inexcusable. There’s no way Isabella would kill herself. Her mother was not like that. She picks up the pen to sign the marriage contract but Ryder speaks up.“Think about it,” he warns her. “If you sign that, you’ll have to live with me. There’s no love, nor any duty in this marriage. You’ll get revenge but it might not be what you want. You’ll be trapped with me in a very dangerous world.”“I don’t care about l
The party ended abruptly and all the guests went home. Hector has strengthened the security around the mansion and is paranoid. All the guards are on alert, with orders to kill anyone caught trespassing. “How the f*ck did his men enter my mansion?” Hector growls. He slams his fists hard on the table. Palmer and Jim are standing in front of him. Hector is glaring at them so Palmer clears his throat to speak.“We have checked every CCTV camera and saw nothing suspicious,” he states in a matter-of-fact way. “The mansion was well secured and-”SMASH!A vase comes flying at him but he calmly steps aside and lets the object smash against the wall, breaking into tiny pieces. Hector’s fury is through the roof but Palmer is unaffected while Jim is terrified. The wrath of their boss is exploding.“MY F*CKING ENEMIES GOT INTO THE MANSION!” He screams. “THAT TOO ON MY ENGAGEMENT! AND…AND…”He’s f*cking my ex-wife! He thinks bitterly. The image of Scarlett and Ryder is flashing through his eyes a
Scarlett is fidgeting in the hallway of the Rochester mansion. She’s feeling extremely nervous and suddenly questioning herself whether she did the right thing by announcing her marriage to Hector. There’s no doubt in her mind that he’s going ballistic at that very moment but he doesn’t scare her. She’s more worried about Elle’s reaction. No one knows Elle the way she does. Beneath the kind facade is a completely deranged person who will go to any lengths to get what she wants. But Elle has Hector now. Scarlett has nothing to fear from her, right?I just need to find the truth behind James and mom’s deaths, she tells herself. Her thoughts are interrupted by a maid.“Your luggage has been kept in the master bedroom, madam,” the maid informs her.Master bedroom…there’s no doubt about it. Even if it’s a contract marriage, Ryder is still her husband and she has to stay with him in one bedroom. The thought scares her but she swallows down her fears. She’ll have to cater to his whims even a
