LOGINILYA
A groan is trapped in my throat as Volk, my right hand, towers before me. His narrowed gray eyes meet mine, white eyebrows slanting as he lifts off the weights, placing them on the racks.
“What is it?” I ask in Russian, even though I already know what he wants as my gaze lands on the folder in his hand.
“You should decide now, boss.”
“You pick.” I catch my breath, sitting on the bench. Sweat drenches every inch of my skin. My heart pounds inside my squeezed ribcage, with blood still roaring through my veins.
“I’m not the one marrying the woman, boss.” He hands me a towel. “And you’ve been ignoring this for months.”
I lift my gaze, glaring at him. “You’ve read the files. You know them more than I do. You know my type. Just fucking pick.”
“No.”
“No?” My jaw clenches. My nose flares as I stand up. Volk is taller than me, but I’m sure I can still take him down. I know his Achilles’ heel. My eyes narrow as I look right into his eyes. “What did you just say?”
“It’s not like that.” He frowns. “It’s your life. You’re marrying the woman and living with her for the rest of your life. At least read their files, meet them once, know them a little bit.”
“I don’t have fucking time for that.” I shove the towel against his chest and walk away.
“And boss.”
“What?” I grunt as I turn to him.
“The unknown number called your personal phone five times in one hour.”
“Unknown number?” I frown at him because I know who that number belongs to.
“Yes, boss.”
“Fuck him. He only calls if he wants something.” Despite what he did to me, a part of me is curious about the call because he doesn’t call if it’s not a life-and-death situation.
“He’s probably asking for another favor. Ignore him, and will eventually stop calling you. He’s a shameless fucking piece of shit.”
Before my father, Nikolae Vasilyev, died over a year ago, his last wish was for me to find someone, get married, and build a family so that I would have an heir when I die, and the Vasilyev bloodline would continue. It’s his dying wish that I want to fulfill, even though marriage is the last thing I want right now.
My life— the life of a Russian Bratva— the head of the Vasilyev Syndicate has no place for love, family, and kids where bullets fly and bombs explode.
But I’m keeping word, and I’m not getting any younger. I’m rich, and I have men to protect my family.
Even though my heart is not on board with this setup, I have to do my father’s last dying wish, and the future of the Vasilyev family lies in this marriage. And it’s time to put down roots.
I take a shower quickly and put on my t-shirt, jeans, and boots before I head to the stable where Maddox and the rest of my horses are waiting for me.
I’d been lying low in an undisclosed location in the US since I bought the property nearly three years ago.
I always dreamed of living in a farmhouse, waking up to roosters crowing in the morning, horseriding, and breathing fresh air.
It all comes true, but I still feel that something is missing— the emptiness in my chest is still there.
I take Maddox out of the stable. Then I saddle up and take him for a ride.
Volk knows not to follow me or suggest bringing protection. I’ve discussed this a thousand times, but I feel safer than ever.
I take the fragrant air into my lungs as I turn the bend on the path, showing off the stunning mountain range and pasture full of wildflowers. A herd of cows gathers about fifty yards away.
The clop of Maddox’s hooves is music to my ear as he gallops further away from the farmhouse. Horse riding takes me away from worries and issues outside the bubble I built for myself.
Just as the tree line comes into view, I notice two black Tahoe and a black G-Wagon waiting, as if telling me how reckless I’ve become and how predictable I am with my morning routines.
Maddox slows down as I get close to the uninvited guests on my property. I swing off the horse and take him under the tree.
“Stay here, buddy.” I pat his cheek and tie the rope to the branch.
Clenching my teeth, I take a deep breath because as much as I want to threaten them, I don’t have weapons with me.
But why did he come all the way here after what he did to me?
While walking in their direction, the G-wagon door opens. Gabe Linden, the Osmium owner and president, who has been making a lot of buzz lately, hops out.
For a sworn enemy, he has the nerve to show up. I give him that.
The last time I came face to face with him was three years ago when he threatened me— but his face has been flashing on the news lately.
I still expect him to be in his thousand-dollar sharp suit. He’s a billionaire, after all.
Not like this— in his crumpled white shirt, disheveled hair, and he looks like he hasn’t slept in days.
“You’re not accepting my calls.” That’s the first thing he says after he left me with threats. His voice is calm, but his features tell something different.
“I don’t work for you. I can fucking ignore your calls however I want. And you just trespassed on my property, Linden.” I steal a glance over his broad shoulders and see familiar faces— Osmium men in suits, stoic with eyes like hawks.
“I’m sure you know the issue I’m facing. That’s why I didn’t walk to your gate.”
“You’re under federal investigation, facing corporate espionage and involvement with organized crime, yet you’re here, discreetly meeting me.” I grit my teeth. “What do you want?”
He takes a deep, long, shuddering breath before meeting my gaze.
Silence stretches between us, and I feel like he’s struggling to gather his courage and swallow his rock-hard pride because I know him. He thinks he’s a righteous asshole who never begs for help from someone like me. And he hates me with every fiber of his being. That’s set in stone.
But right now, I feel like I’m winning something.
WILLAI’m so stupid.Of course, he still hates me. Well, he will loathe me if he finds out I’ve been keeping a three-year-old secret from him.I never got the chance to apologize to him for what I did. And he was right. If he wanted me dead, I could be dead. But he wants to watch me suffer, and I know his kind; he doesn’t take betrayal lightly, and he definitely holds grudges. One of these days, I’d be paying the consequences of my actions, if I haven’t already done so. The anger and pain in his eyes are too deep to fade— and too late to ask for forgiveness. But what hurts me the most is finding out he’s getting married. It’s easy for him to move on because he’s not only charming and attractive for the mafia, he’s also filthy rich and powerful, and women would fall on their feet to marry him.I just make it to the elevator. The door slides open, and the blonde woman, his fiancée, is inside. She must have recognized me. I see the look in her eyes as she looks at me. She must be mocking
ILYA“What the fuck are you doing here, Natalie?” I growl in anger.Instead of answering me, she kisses me to shut me up. I let her. I don’t want to argue because I’d been ignoring her calls while she was in New York, handling matters.Natalie is one of my lawyers. She’s good at what she does. We hooked up once in a while, and she’s a good lay, too, but she knows there’s no us and there will never be us. And she’s okay with it. No complications. No emotional entanglements.I barely slept last night with another sexual dream, fucking Wila in the barn, while fully aware that she was just sleeping across the hallway. But I’m still hurt, and I do hold grudges.I haven’t forgiven myself for believing that we could be together despite who her brother was to me.When Natalie starts touching me and going down on her knees to suck me, I fuck her in the barn, and she’s too willing, too eager to roll in the hay, literally and figuratively.Once she has her orgasm, and I come, I take off the cond
WILLAGabe left in the afternoon. I don’t have the strength to argue. I can’t run away this time. I guess I would be stuck with Ilya for weeks or so.Gabe’s reason makes sense, but I feel like he has an agenda. He hates Ilya. He made it pretty clear when he threatened to kill him three years ago.He didn’t just take me to the angry, raging, resentful, and vengeful lion to be a pawn, but to be mauled. He’s also using me, and I don’t know what for. And I will find it out.Since Ilya left the room, I haven’t seen him again. He doesn’t visit me or say hi, but I expect nothing less from him. I betrayed him after all.Gabe might have paid him a huge amount of money to take me in. Otherwise, there’s no way he’d do this out of the goodness of his heart.I can see in his eyes how much he hates me and hasn’t forgiven me.After what happened in Las Vegas, I promised Gabe not to contact Ilya again if he left him alone. I did try to find him, but he didn’t want to be found.Seeing him again after
WILLAI thought I died until I became aware of the hammering headache, so severe that it was worse than the worst hangover I had when I drank to stupor after finding out my ex had been cheating on me. My throbbing skull feels like it’s splitting into pieces.I don’t know how long it has been, but the first thing I hear is the rhythmic beeping sound echoing in the room.As my mind clears, I try to crack my eyes open. I realize they’re too heavy, like I just stepped into the swarm of bees. Then I feel the large, warm hands softly squeezing mine.“Honey?” It’s Dad. One word filled with worry is all it takes for that assault to flash in my head.A gasp escapes my lips as tears roll down my cheeks. “D-Dad?”“Hey.” I feel the bed being adjusted, and my back feels like one giant bruise. He kisses my forehead and says, “You’re gonna be okay.”“Dad.” My throat hurts. My voice is hoarse. I try to say something, but my lips are dry, split, and swollen.I can barely see him through my busted eyes
ILYA“Because I feel like whoever did this to my sister is payback for what I did in the past, and it's coming back to hunt me.”I should be celebrating from within that I will see Willa again, and her brother apologizes and begs for my help. I can use it as leverage to maybe emotionally torture her for what she and her brother did to me, but that woman has been through a lot.“No.”“I know what I did is wrong.” He doesn’t give up easily. “I’m willing to pay you to protect my sister until we catch the attacker and my issue with the FBI is over. Please?”“You and Willa broke my heart, Linden. I will never forget that. You know I hold grudges, and I like to make anyone pay a heavy price whoever do me wrong.”“I know.” He comes close to me. “And I’m sorry. I’m not asking for your forgiveness because I know you can never forgive me. But please, take care of my sister.”I clench my jaw. “Then I’m asking three things from you, and you’re not gonna like it.”“To protect my sister, I’ll do an
ILYA“I don’t have time, Linden. Just say what you came here for. I’m sure you won’t waste your time just to gawk at me, because the last thing you wanna see is this face.” I point at myself. He inhales another deep breath and takes his phone, showing me the image that paralyzes me in terror. The sudden jolt in my chest breaks the fear that immobilizes me.I take the phone from him. I want to make sure the image is not playing tricks on me, or not AI-generated.The unrelenting grip makes my hand shake.“Are you fucking with me?” My eyes narrow at him. I shove it back to him. “Do you think I did this? Why would I hurt her?”I still struggle against my instinct to find a reason why he’s here, and who could do something like this?Deep within me, my blood is already boiling in my veins. I haven’t felt rage and violence since I put my father to rest, and I’ve kept the monster inside me locked up since then.“I know you didn’t do it. She’s in a lot of pain. The doctors put her in an induce
