DANI

It had been eight hours since Terzo left. He hadn’t come back or called back. I sent him a text message, but it was left unseen.

I wasn’t worried. Scratch that. I was terrified, knowing that he didn’t tell me what he was going to do, yet deep inside me, it was dangerous.

“Dani,” Marco called me from the couch. His gaze locked on the TV screen, and he turned the volume louder.

My feet brought me there with him while I watched the news on TV.

“Oh, my God.” My hand is on my mouth. “Why would she commit suicide? She didn’t look depressed or anything. In fact, she was great and sexy.”

“Good job, boss,” Marco mumbled. I almost did not catch what he said.

“What did you just say?” I gripped his arm so that I could get his attention.

“She’s a rat,” he replied without looking at me.

“Oh, shit.” Now, it made perfect sense why he was so angry, determined to fly back. “She’d been working for my—” I swallowed the bile rising in my throat. “She was Francesco’s confidante?”

“Yeah. I knew she

DANI“Where are we going?” I asked as Marco hopped into the boat, carrying my suitcase and Celestina’s.“It’s gonna be fine, Dani.” Celestina grabbed Marco’s hand as she hopped in, too. “The less you know, the better.”“You’re next, signora.” Luca assisted me while scanning around as if someone was following us. He then joined us on the boat, leaving only Matteo on the dock.I got into the boat with my limbs shaking. I wished they could tell me more about where we were going and what was going on out there. I was worried about the people we left behind while Celestina and I depended on these three.I knew they were capable, but what if we were outnumbered? What if we got caught by the people who sent an explosive into the compound?Matteo untied the rope, throwing it to the boat, and was about to jump when I saw a familiar face. “Wait!” What was he doing here? I watched Ronan walk in our direction. “We don’t have time, Dani!” Marco said urgently.“Just a minute. I know him.” I point

TERZOI swallowed hard. Rage boiled inside me, mixing with guilt and dread. I shoved it aside and focused on the mission. “I promise, Papa. I will be with them soon.”“This is not done by the Danattis. Arturo called me to say that they want to make peace with us to continue the alliance.”“I don’t trust Danattis anymore, but I have a plan to earn alliances. Trust me, Papa.” I wiped off the dust on his hair and kissed his forehead. “Thank you. Let the doctor take care of you. You’re safe here.”I gripped the doctor’s arm. “Treat them. Don’t worry about the money. If you need more supplies or medicines, inform me. I’ll get them for you.”“Boss.” Gio came to whisper, “I have the footage. Marcelo is on the way to grab the guy.”“Tell Marcelo to check the origin of the parcel. They have the sender’s name, address, and phone number. I want that guy, too.” ***“Talk! I’m not gonna ask again. Who asked you to deliver the package? There’s no record in the courier! You’re not even a courier. I

TERZOI found my father under the debris. Throwing away pieces of wood and broken glass on top of him, I was beyond terrified when he didn’t move. He had cuts and bruises, blood on his forehead, his arms, his nose, and in his ears. I thought I was going to lose him. He must have hit his head from the blast. I was grateful he regained consciousness right away, but what was more terrifying was the words he told me before we got out of the burning house. When Dani asked me, I didn’t know what to tell her— the truth or maybe the truth was too terrifying for her. I didn’t want to frighten her. “I don’t know, Dani. I’ll call you as soon as I get more information. I’m gonna ask someone I trust to do our own investigation.” I kissed her one more time before I walked out of the house.“Let’s go,” I ordered at least seven of my men to follow the ambulance that was carrying my father and Alessio while I rode with Tristan and Gio in a separate vehicle.I was glad Alessio was with my father whe

DANI“Why are they taking so long?” I paced before the burning house. It started spreading to the west side. The longer Terzo was not showing up, I grew restless and terrified.I ran towards where he went, to the back door. I hadn’t gotten far, someone just wrapped his arms around me, holding me back. I was sure it was a man because he just lifted me like I weighed nothing.“Where do you think you’re going? Getting yourself killed?”“Let me go, Marco! Or I swear to God, I will shoot you if I get to grab a gun.” I struggled to get loose. The more I tried harder, the tighter he gripped my waist.“No. I did as you asked before, look what it got me. If I weren’t his cousin, I would have been dead by now. Stay put. He will come back with his father.”“What if—” I couldn’t speak anymore. I felt drained from fighting to set free from his grip, which did not help the emotions overwhelming me. I shook to cry. I didn’t know what to do with my life if something bad happened to him. Or if he wo

TERZO“I’m fucking rich!” She threw herself at me.I caught her in the air as she snaked her arms around my neck, her legs around my waist. I chuckled. “I bet you are.”“Let’s go home, baby.”“I love the sound of that, sweetheart.” I carried her outside the museum. People were smiling at us, though all of them had no idea what we came here for. Once we got to the SUV, Marco was already opening the door for us, and I ushered her inside. The 7-seater SUV drove smoothly to the main street, heading towards the compound. The guys didn’t ask how it was, or did she get it? It was written all over her face. No questions, just smiles.“Guys, what’s wrong?” she asked.“So? What was it like inside?” Gio finally broke the silence.“Have you been to a data facility?”Marco and Tristan shook their heads.“Me neither,” Gio seconded, “But I saw it in movies.”“Similar to that. That’s how big the area of safe boxes alone is. Then there was this big door of a vault. Anyway, I got this inside the enve

DANI“I don’t know. I just feel like she took my life. She took advantage of me being a kid who didn’t have a memory. Yes, I’m furious. She made me believe that she was my mother. No matter how she treated me, I never questioned why she did what she did. I suppose I thought mothers treated their children differently.”“Do you think there’s a chance that maybe you can find a way to forgive her so you can move on?” the psychologist asked. I’d been talking about my life, my relationship, my memories for the last two hours, and I still didn’t know what to feel.“If she asks? I don’t know. I’m hurt. She betrays me.”“That’s good, Dani. You know how you feel. Feeling hurt is normal when someone you care about hurts you. And perhaps you’re too hard on yourself. What was your relationship with your stepfather like?”I looked down at my hands on my lap. “They got married when I was still young. I guess I wanted to have a father figure in my life. I wondered what it felt like. Throughout the y
