A round of applause erupted from the crowd in the hall when the students on the platform took off their graduation caps and raised them up in the air. A sign it was finally over.
âCan you believe it? We are graduates!â
Nina squeaked sharply in Evelynâs ear, making her cringe. She smiled at Nina, fighting the urge to dip her pinky into her ear and rub the itch off.
âYes⌠Iâm glad we both reached this far.â Evelyn beamed, grabbing Ninaâs hand and leading her out of the hall.
âWe did it! We did it!â Nina jumped in excitement and Evelyn couldnât help but smile⌠her best friendâs enthusiasm was contagious.
âCongratulations Miss Nina⌠you worked hard!â She said dramatically, bowing slightly, making Nina giggle.
They took off their hired gowns and dropped them off at the college administration.
Evelyn sighed, taking a look around the campus. This had been her favorite place for the past four years and even though she is very happy to graduate, she will miss it.
âSo, now that school is done, whatâs your plan?â Nina asked as they walked out of the gate and Evelyn smiled. That was easy.
âYou know my plan! I have always wanted to get into a law firm, and now with the offer from Harvard and my parents' insurance from the accident, I can finally make it!â
Evelyn quickly wiped her eyes with her sleeve. She promised herself not to cry, but the mentioning of her late parents suddenly soured her eyes.
âHey, you know they are proud of you, right?â Nina cupped Evelynâs face, asking in a soft tone. She knew about Evelynâs parentsâ car accident, and she knew how big a scar it left in Evelyn.
âThanksâŚâ Evelyn forced a smile, âI just wish they can be there to see it happening thatâs all.â
Nina smiled, but she swallowed her comfort words, seeing Evelynâs forced smile: âOf course, I know your dream, miss lawyer, but I meant whatâs the plan for tonight! Drink all night and more!â
âFine!â Evelyn rolled her eyes before she burst into laughter, seeing her best friend off, âSee you in a few hours!â
Though she knew it was a standard consolation, Ninaâs words about her parents being proud of her still cheered Evelyn up a lot. After all, her lawyer father had been her hero all those years, until that drunk driver took away their lives, putting her in the orphanage.
She was skipping when she reached her uncleâs house, or, âhomeâ for now. She lived here only for over a year when her aunt and uncle suddenly took her home.
Evelyn was excited to show them her certificate of achievement and claim the insurance money for her parentsâ death that her aunt and uncle have been keeping for her.
Her dream is finally within her reach!
But her skipping turned into panic as her smile was replaced by a frown when she saw their yard wide open. It wasnât exactly a safe community, and her aunt never leaves the fence open!
Dashing into the house, her heart sank at the mess in front of her eyes. The sofas were turned upside down, many of the property was destroyed and the sound of someone ransacking the place reached her ears. It was coming from the kitchen.
Her aunt and uncle were holding onto each other in the corner, trembling in fright.
âAunt, whatâs happening? Why are they doing this?â She asked them but they just shook their heads, not daring to speak out in case the thugs came out and turned their anger on them.
They had been home minding their own business when suddenly someone barged in and began to smash and flip things in the house.
The sound of plates breaking and the smashing of the windows echoed around the house.
Anger flared through Evelyn. Her chest heaved while she clenched her hands into fists. How dare they? This was illegal! How could thugs break into someoneâs home and cause so much damage? âWhoâs going to pay for all of it?â
Before she could stop herself, she stomped over to the kitchen and glared at the thugs who were destroying the place.
âWhat the hell are you doing?â She shouted, and her aunt pulled her back immediately.
Her aunt is a small lady who is scared by everything. She could never handle confrontations like this, not even when her uncle beats her after a lot of alcohol, unlike Evelyn.
Evelyn never backs down from right and wrong.
One of the thugs who looked like the boss turned to look at the archway leading to the kitchen, wondering who was brave enough to stop them.
Seeing that it was a tiny girl, he scoffed. âStay out of this kid.â
Evelyn scowled at the intruder. âIâm not a kid! How dare you come to someoneâs house and destroy things? Iâm calling the police.â
She dipped her hand into her bag trying to get her phone but the thug swatted it away.
âGet lost bitch! I said stay away unless you want to get hurt.â He scolded, making Evelyn take a step back, wrinkling her nose. He stunk of alcohol and cigarettes.
âDo you know who we are?â He said dangerously, glaring at her.
âI donât care who you are! You are trespassing on private property! Get lost before I call the police on you.â Evelyn hissed, pulling her phone out but the man already gripped her wrist and took away her phone.
âThe cops work for us, missy.â The man snorted condescendingly, âOur boss is Damian!â
âAm I supposed to be intimidated by that name?â Evelyn frowned with a shrug, reaching for her phone âGive it back, this is robbery!â
âThis is a down payment of your debt to the boss,â The man rose Evelynâs phone over his head and Evelyn couldn't reach it, âand so are you.â
âWhat?â Evelyn blinked in confusion.
âGet the girl.â The thug shouted at his men before he turned to Evelyn's aunt with an evil smirk, âWe are getting your daughter⌠you donât mind, do you?â
The tiny lady shivered in fear without being able to utter a word, and Evelynâs uncle blurted: âSheâs not our daughter!â
Tears brimmed Evelynâs eyes.
She didnât expect them to be so cowardly. They could have called the police at least.
She forced back her tears as she struggled on her own, only to be stuffed in the back of the thugsâ smelly van as her bright graduation day took a sudden turn to the nest of the infamous mafia boss.
Several months later after Nina and Jackâs wedding, Damian held a party for Evelyn to celebrate their fifth anniversary. Unlike their wedding, this event was grand. Damian had decided to introduce his heir, Aiden Hill, the future Mafia boss of his empire. The Country was a much safer place with most of his enemies behind bars and the streets were clean of drugs. Not entirely though but now, he had many on his side fighting for a drug-free Country to protect their loved ones. Evelyn was dolled up in a silver off-the-shoulder gown that was fitted up to the knees then the rest of the gown was flared, touching the ground. The neckline had diamond details with a plunging slit in the middle, showing a little cleavage. Her curves were hugged perfectly by the dress, painting a picture of poise and grace. As for her strawberry blond hair, it was raised up into an elegant updo held together by diamond clips that sparkled when she moved. The simple makeup she put on her face accentuated h
Four years later. âI passed the bar!â Evelyn exclaimed the moment the call went through. âWow. Congratulations kitten. You deserve it.â Damianâs equally elated voice echoed through the phone. Evelyn had completed her studies a while ago and had to sit for bar exams for her to become a lawyer. The following weeks had been difficult for her because she was worried about her results. It was not easy for one to pass the bar. Evelyn made sure she studied hard and with the help of her husband, she was able to understand most of the cases. Although the exam hit her hard as it was harder than expected. This was why seeing her name on the list of those who made it made her feel emotional. She never thought she would pass the bar on the first try. When she thought about how far she had come, tears couldnât help but sting her eyes. âIâm so happy Damian. I canât believe it. Itâs a dream come true.â âYou worked hard my love. You just got what you worked for. I am happy for you. We shou
Evelynâs mind was filled with curiosity as Damian carried her out of the plane bridal style. With her eyes closed, she could only rely on what her ears could pick up to try and guess her surroundings. They entered a car and it drove for about an hour or so. Damian carried her once more and she could tell they were now on a boat. The scent of the ocean coupled with the soft breeze that brushed against her skin gave her a refreshing feeling. She wasnât scared of not being able to see where she was going because Damian was by her side. When the boat came to a stop, she felt Damian carry her again and they soon entered a warm enclosed space that she assumed was where they would be staying. âWe are here my love. But, Iâm not taking your blindfold off yet.â Damian whispered huskily. Evelyn felt how Damian began to undress her slowly. His hands brushed her skin ever so lightly leaving tingles in their wake and when he finally rolled her panties down her legs, she knew she was in for
When Evelyn and Damian got back together, Damian sent Sasha away to work in the territory he had just taken over. He did this to avoid problems and he didnât want Evelyn to be uncomfortable. However, Sasha felt aggrieved. She genuinely loved Damian and hoped he would keep her as a plaything forever since she knew he never wanted to get married. He didnât want any form of weakness in his life. But when he suddenly fell in love and decided to get married, she knew that she was wrong. It was not that Damian didnât want to fall in love. He just couldn't love her. Jealousy bloomed in her heart when she heard Evelyn was pregnant and then later heard about the wedding while she was doing some work in Zachâs former territory. She was angry that she was cast away like she was nothing. Her place was by Damianâs side but it was stolen by Evelyn. It was supposed to be her who held the lady boss title. The things she had done for Damian... There was no way she would accept walking away em
âCongratulations Eve. You got us all worried.â Nina said to Evelyn. She was seated by her bedside while Damian was holding the baby and Jack was making peek-a-boo faces at him. Evelyn smiled weakly. âI was scared too. There I was waiting to meet my baby and then I suddenly lost consciousness.â Nina held her hand. âIâm glad youâre ok now. You should have seen Damian. He almost lost it. The man really loves you and I can tell he will make you happy. If anyone deserves happiness, itâs you.â She was referring to how Evelyn spent unpleasant years in the orphanage. She had been bullied and there was no one to protect her. When her uncle came for her, they pretended to care for her but when her cousin Mark harassed her, they turned a blind eye. âWe both deserve happiness.â Evelyn remarked. The medication she had taken was making her drowsy so she found herself dozing off. Damian noticed this from a distance and approached her. âSleep, my love. Iâll take care of Aiden.â He promis
Damian raised one of his eyebrows, wondering what Evelyn was on about. He placed her leg that he was massaging down on his lap and stared at her. âWhat is that supposed to mean?â He asked, bemused at her sudden question. What did she mean by what were his plans for the future? Hadnât they discussed this already? âJust that. What are your plans?â Evelyn asked again. Her voice rose an octave higher. âWell, you do know my plans. I intend to expand my territory while you get busy with school and also to make this Country a safer place for our child.â Damian replied calmly. âSo you donât plan to marry me? How come Iâm not in your plans?â Evelyn yelled, her eyes brimming. Damian was shocked, to say the least. âWhere is this coming from? Who said I donât plan to marry you?â He asked. The poor man didn't understand what was going on. âI asked what your plan was and you didnât include me in them.â Evelyn responded, her voice shaking. Being in the third trimester, she was becoming
