My lips are quivering with words unsaid as memories of the past swarm through my brain. I see my mother making coffee, smiling before I pack my lunch for school. She always sat at our table, ready with breakfast, and now I understand why she was never in a hurry—all she needed was for me to leave so she could open up a portal.
