LOGINMATTA week more. That was the time left before we graduate. It had been a hell of three weeks preparing for everything, and what I wouldn't give just to sleep all day today as it was my free day. Debra was gracious enough to give me a free day. Well, she was just considering my situation. To prove she would be the best aunt the baby would have, she was even willing to cut out on my work and give me a day to rest. I was supposed to be doing that, rolling on the bed thinking of my mate and the future, reading the new romance novel Debra got for me, and eating the cut fruits dad kept in the refrigerator for me, or even sleeping. I was supposed to do one of those things, but instead; I was in a café with Smart. Alone. Debra wasn't with me because I didn't tell her. She was busy as it was, and I didn't want to disturb her with my issues; after all, there was no need to be alarmed. We were meeting in my favourite cafe, at a place where I felt safe.“Hmm. The doughnuts here are tasty,” Sm
JAYI stared right at Smart, who was picking at his food, asking myself, not for the first time, how I had found myself in such a situation. I didn't even know how or why I accepted his request to have lunch with him. It could still be the lingering guilt from the time he almost ended his life because of me. I didn't want a repeat of that, knowing he might seek another way to harm himself. “What happened to your brother?”He glanced up at the question, shocked that I'd even spoken to him. What was he expecting? That I would ignore him? He pushed the food on the plate around before speaking, his voice almost a whisper.“He died of poor heart and lungs.” “How?”I'd never heard of people dying like that. We're wolves and even though we get hurt, we don't die easily. My mum died because she abused drugs, and Matt's mother died in an accident. I didn't know anyone could die of poor hearts and lungs. He had always been a sickly child, but he looked like he could have survived more years.
Jay's eyes widened in amusement, and he mumbled, “Uh-oh, trouble in paradise.”I shot him a warning glance, trying to keep my tone casual. “Yeah, I mean, I didn't exactly check on him, but I'm sure he's there.” If only Dad could see us. Grinning, Jay sat next to me, blowing on my left ear at intervals, and almost making me lose my composure. Had it not been for one thing, I would have yelled at him. I had to keep my mouth shut, so Dad wouldn't know what was going on. 'Just you wait,' I whispered, hoping Dad wouldn't hear it. “Are you certain he's not with you?”“Of course, he's —” “I'll call his phone then. If he's in his room, he'll answer.”I felt a cold sweat break out on my forehead as Jay's expression turned mischievous. He slowly pulled out his phone and showed it to me, a wicked grin spreading across his face. The screen was black, and he mouthed, “Don't worry, it's off. He won't get me even if he calls.”Oh.Thank Fuck. For a second there, I was worried about getting caugh
MATTThe tension between Dad and Jay when they returned made it impossible for me to talk to Jay about Smart. I wanted to know what he thought about his ex-lover's strange visit and if I should go to the lunch date or stand him up. After all, it wasn't compulsory that I had to meet him. I could just lie about being occupied and whatever. I owe him nothing. Jay and I didn't have time to be alone until Dad left for a business trip. He would have taken me with him if it weren't for the drama rehearsals, and he couldn't take Jay with him, as that would mean I would have to be alone. He wasn't taking any chances, just to avoid that fainting episode, even though Dr Jeremy mentioned I might not experience it again if I didn't do anything strenuous. If not for that, he would have taken Jay with him, just so we wouldn't be alone in the house. “So, what do you want to do before you go to bed?” Jay asked when he returned from the kitchen. We had just finished dinner, and I was waiting for him
JAYAlmost every worker noticed how happy I was. I hummed while working, beamed at any who came to my desk for help. Most of them, especially the omegas, looked like they had seen a ghost each time I smiled at them. Well, I haven't been the most sociable worker since I started here. It was the only way to avoid unnecessary feelings from the omegas. Richard, on the other hand, was having the time of his life. He broke up with his latest date and had vowed to be single for life. “Every Alpha is supposed to enjoy his bachelor years instead of getting tied down by an omega,” he had said when I asked him about his plans. While the other workers whispered among themselves at my strange behaviour, Dad was the only one whose stern gaze followed my every move. The man hadn't entered his office since he arrived. Instead, he had stayed in my department, claiming he had something he needed to supervise. It was just a guise to watch and almost break my back with errands. The man was out to get
Debra didn't let me go until I told her everything, from the time we went to the hospital and Dad's reaction to it. She gulped everything down, eyes wide whenever necessary, and let out sounds of shock. “Your dad didn't!”“He did.”I smiled, recalling how scared I had been then, thinking it was over for me. I never expected Dad to accept us, at least not that easily. I thought it would take time before he would do that, but guess luck was on our side. Debra grinned. “I'm glad he accepted you. It would have been a bummer if he didn't.” She let out a sigh. “Debra! Come here. We need your input on this,” Clara called out to her. “I will be right there.” She got on her feet and dusted her butt. “I'll be right back, darling, to get the rest of the story.”“No problem.”She winked before she hurried over to the others, and soon, she was back in her director's mode. Shaking my head at the lame joke she made about the tree men, I focused on the paper she tasked me with cutting. I refused t
