Chapter 8

Goldie Lane
The funeral was held on the third day.

Calling it a funeral was generous. It was very simple.

No wake. No wreaths. No flowers.

Mom said not to make a big event of it. I was too young to bear such scenes.

But Megan disagreed.

"Zack had nothing when he was alive. He cannot leave with nothing too."

In the end, they each gave in a little.

They rented a small room at the funeral home with only a few rows of chairs and one photo.

Andrew chose the photo.

It was my school ID photo from seventh

The next moment, a police car stopped at the cemetery entrance. Two uniformed officers stepped out and walked straight toward the crowd. The officer in front stopped before Dad."Michael Reed, you are suspected of aggravated assault and child abuse."You are now being taken into custody. Please cooperate."Dad did not resist. The officers moved beside him and pulled his hands behind his back. With a click, the handcuffs closed.Mom did not look at him.She turned away and lit another cigarette.Dad was taken away. After two steps, he suddenly stopped and looked back.He looked at the new headstone, at the small photo on it.In the photo, a little boy had short hair and a white T-shirt.Then Dad turned back and followed the officers step by step toward the police car.He walked very slowly, as if measuring the last of his freedom. The car door closed. The engine started, and the car slowly drove out of the cemetery. His trial happened three months later. The court fou

My hair was short, I wore a white T-shirt, and my smile was careful.Andrew said it was beautiful."When Zack smiled, his eyes curved like the moon."Not many people came.Andrew stood in the front row with my urn in his arms.Megan cried so hard she could barely stand, leaning against a relative for support.Mom sat at the very front with her back to everyone. Her hair was completely white, and her hunched back looked like that of a woman in her seventies or eighties. She smoked

Because my body looked so terrible and had already begun to smell, I had to be cremated the next day.Mom signed the papers. Her hand shook the entire time, like a child just learning how to write.Dad begged all night."Let me hold him. Just once. Please. Let me hold him one last time."His voice was already hoarse, as if his throat had been scraped with sandpaper. He knelt on the floor, hair hanging loose, eyes swollen like bruised fruit.Andrew stood in front of the door."No."You cannot hurt him again."Dad's shoulders shook."Andrew, Dad only wants to hold Zack one last time."He is my own son. I raised him for so many years. How could I bear to hurt him?"Andrew laughed coldly."You raised him for so many years."And then you used those years to torture him to death."Mom crouched in the stairwell with a cigarette between her fingers. She had quit smoking for more than ten years. When she quit, she had sworn she would never touch cigarettes again. The flame li

The doctor knelt down and pressed his fingers to my neck for a long time. Then he looked up at Mom with sympathy."The child is gone. I am sorry."The sentence fell like a stone into dead water.Megan broke into a wail."Why? Why did this have to happen to him?"He was so young. Why did he have to leave this world?"Andrew knelt on the floor, forehead pressed to the ground."Why was it not me?"Zack, I hurt so much. Come back. Let me go instead, okay?"I was a coward. I did not protect you. I am sorry, Zack."Mom lifted her head. Tears ran down her sweat-soaked face."How could this happen?"She grabbed the doctor's coat with trembling fingers."Doctor, please save him."I will pay anything. I will sell the house and give you all the money. Please, save him."The doctor did not pull away. He only sighed softly."This is not about money."He paused and glanced at my purple-red body."The child ingested a large amount of toxin and was deprived of oxygen for a long time

My soul stood to the side and watched quietly.Dad froze where he stood. The blood drained from his face in an instant.Andrew and Megan let out a sound that did not seem human."Zack!"They both rushed forward and collapsed beside my body.Megan cradled my head in her arms."Zack, wake up. I am here. Open your eyes and look at me, please!"Her tears struck my face, but my face had no warmth left.Andrew knelt on the floor and pried open the fingers still clamped around my throat, one by one. When he finished, he saw the ten purple-black marks on my neck.Mom stood behind them and had not yet reached the door. She frowned, her voice still carrying the impatience of being woken too early."What is wrong now? Why are you making such a fuss? He was only locked in for one night."She leaned in and saw my swollen purple face."Zack?"She snatched me from Megan's arms and pulled me against herself. Then she laid me flat on the floor and began pressing on my chest with everyth

Mom and Dad came rushing downstairs. The moment they saw Andrew and Megan at the punishment room door, their faces changed."What are you doing? Sneaking around in the middle of the night trying to break a lock?"This is theft. Thieves do things like this. Is this how I raised you?"Megan threw herself at Dad and grabbed his arm, crying so hard she could barely breathe."Dad, please. Let Zack out."Open the door and let us look at him, okay? Just one look."Dad shook her off."He cannot hold out?"Zack Reed, answer me. Are you pretending to be pitiful again?"There was not a single place on my body that did not hurt.I wanted to speak, but I no longer had the strength to open my mouth.Dad's face darkened."You are getting better and better at taking shortcuts. Now you have learned to act mute."Do you think this will make me let you out? Dream on."Mom hesitated."All right. It is only one night."Maybe let him out. What if something really happens?"Dad's voice shot
