CHAPTER 6 THE SHIP IN THE HORIZON
It was a new day. Marina and Charlotte went to take a walk on the beach while holding each other’s hands. It was the siren who suggested to do this, although she was not sure about why. The feeling of their hands intertwined made both girls feel happy, so they stayed silent the whole time enjoying each other’s company.
“I will treasure this moment forever,” Marina said out of the blue, surprising Charlotte. After the conversation they had had on the previous day, the pirate girl got into a state of high emotional sensitivity, something she had never gone through before as she had always hidden her emotions when she was part of Captain Anna’s crew, and all to give the impression of being a fierce, aggressive and fearless woman. But now with Marina, there was no need to act, and being able to show off her emotions was something new for her. Still, her face expression was neutral.

Marina slowly opened her eyes. Her head was pounding a lot. She tried to massage her temples to ease the pain but she could not move her hands. It was as if they were pinned to her body. Marina looked down and she could see she was wrapped with a thick rope that made her keep her hands pinned to her torso. She kept looking down and she could see her legs were chained to a ring bolted to the floor. Marina started remembering the day she was kidnapped: tied up in the very same way, but with a fishtail instead of legs.The sound of a grunt from the cell next to hers brought Marina out of her thoughts. She looked in that direction and she saw Ismael with his hands tied behind his back and his legs chained to the floor. “Ismael!” Marina exclaimed in a muffled scream. “Are you okay?” Ismael heard the girl but took him a while to figure out the direction where her voice came from. “Ismael!” the two girls exclaimed. “How is this possible?” Captain Anna asked surprised. “I am much more than you can imagine,” Ismael replied while standing using a spear he had on his hands for support. The ship gave another jolt, pulling everybody out of their surprise. “Get the cannons ready! This man has brought something with him to attack us!” Captain Anna ordered and her crew obeyed. Right before they could get in position, various giant tentacles emerged from the water and started attacking the pirates, and they tried to defend themselves using their sabres and some guns they had. In the middle of the chaos, Ismael threw his spear at the man holding Charlotte, hitting him in the chest. The girl took advantage of this and pulled herself off his hold. It was late at night. Charlotte was laying on the bed with Marina and Ismael sitting on each side of it. Marina was holding Charlotte’s left hand while Ismael looked at them both. Even though Charlotte’s wounds were not as bad as the ones she had the first time they met, they were still bad enough to keep her unconscious for a long time. Ismael did his best to heal her, so the only thing he and Marina could do was waiting to see if their friend wakes up. Finally, after a long wait, Charlotte stirred up from her sleep and her eyes started to flutter… or at least what she had left for eyes fluttered. “Marina? Ismael?” Charlotte said looking at her friends confused. “Charlotte! Thanks to the seas that you are okay!” Marina exclaimed while hugging Charlotte. The human winced in pain at the contact, but did not say anything and hugged her friend back. “It is good to see you awake, Charlotte,” Ismael said out of the blue, getting the girls’ attention. It has been a month since the incident with captain Anna had taken place, and Charlotte and Marina were getting accustomed once again to living with Ismael. Now that there were no worries to deal with and Charlotte no longer was a pirate, it was necessary to do changes in her life. After taking two days to calm down and checking if there was anything to save in the shack, Charlotte and Ismael started working on the few crops that were left in the back of the house. They were not enough to earn money by selling them in the market of the town, but with Ismael and Marina’s combined efforts, they were able to get fish to sell. It was not easy for Marina to gather the fishes knowing they would be used for food, but she knew it was necessary for giving support to her friends. During the following weeks, Ismael taught Charlotte everything he knew about growing fruits and vegetables, and Charlotte learned quickly so they could retrieve their crops. Still, they required some

Marina was surprised by Charlotte’s words. Did she love her? How could she know that? Marina wasn’t so naïve as to not understand Charlotte’s feelings, but she has not experienced them herself. Sure, she has seen some of her people back at home giving love to their meaningful others, but apart from her parents, she has not experienced receiving love from another person. Willing to have a better understanding of Charlotte’s feelings, Marina asked her “How do you know that you love me?” Now it was Charlotte’s turn to be surprised. She had not felt what she felt for Marina for anyone before, and when she met Anna, the first thing she felt was admiration, and with the pass of time she felt something else and she thought that was love. But if it was love, why did she feel something similar but at the same time so different for Marina? Since unmemorable times, the ocean has been a place full of mysteries that mankind has always tried to understand. Mysteries that lie far beyond the surface of the water, where the sunlight does not shine anymore and no human being can go. One of these mysteries is about a strange creature whose mere existence has captivated thousands of people, but at the same time has been put on doubt, as the idea of a living being half human half fish seemed impossible. One clear morning, Marina was swimming in the outskirts of her community when a shoal of fish quickly swam towards her. The siren stopped her swimming and allowed the fish to get closer to her; she was worried that something bad was happening if the fishes were swimming so fast.“What is going on little friends?” Marina asked the fish.
