CHAPTER 12 A NEW LIFE
Marina was surprised by Charlotte’s words. Did she love her? How could she know that? Marina wasn’t so naïve as to not understand Charlotte’s feelings, but she has not experienced them herself. Sure, she has seen some of her people back at home giving love to their meaningful others, but apart from her parents, she has not experienced receiving love from another person. Willing to have a better understanding of Charlotte’s feelings, Marina asked her “How do you know that you love me?”
Now it was Charlotte’s turn to be surprised. She had not felt what she felt for Marina for anyone before, and when she met Anna, the first thing she felt was admiration, and with the pass of time she felt something else and she thought that was love. But if it was love, why did she feel something similar but at the same time so different for Marina? One clear morning, Marina was swimming in the outskirts of her community when a shoal of fish quickly swam towards her. The siren stopped her swimming and allowed the fish to get closer to her; she was worried that something bad was happening if the fishes were swimming so fast.“What is going on little friends?” Marina asked the fish. It was a new day. Captain Anna woke up with the very first rays of sunlight and prepared herself for the day. She left her quarts and started to make a lot of noise to wake up her crew.“Wake up you lazy rats! Sun is shining and there is no time to lose!” Anna shouted in her attempt to wake her sailors. The fuss was so much that everybody on the ship started to get up, including Marina who was slightly disoriented due to the sudden ruckus.Marina started to look around her trying to understand why there was so much noise, but she could only see the bars of her cell. After doing her observation, she felt something weird happening with her body right in her lower half. She looked down to her tail and she was surprised with what she saw. When she woke up, Marina was confused. The last thing she remembered was arriving at a beach and hugging Charlotte, but her surroundings were different from the beach she had arrived. She was now on a room with walls colour light brown, and she was laying on something soft while covered with a white cloth. Marina took it off and she could see her tail was gone once again, replaced by human legs. Marina stood up from the bed after making a huge effort as she still did not know how to use her new legs, and once she was standing she started to walk with clumsy steps towards the door. She opened it and found herself in another room, with a table in the middle of it, a cylindrical object in a corner and a window from which she could see the ocean. Next to the table, a man was sitting while drinking something from a little recipient. Marina tried to get closer to him, but as she gave the first step the wooden floor creaked. It has been a month since Marina and Charlotte were rescued by Ismael, and since then everything has been good for both the siren and the pirate: after seven days, Charlotte’s wounds healed completely, and she immediately tested her body to make sure it had no sequels. For her good luck, nor her strength nor agility were affected, and the last vestiges of her wounds were some recurrent headaches, for which she was drinking a herbal tea prepared by Ismael. Once Charlotte was recovered completely, she and Marina helped Ismael with his daily house chores.He taught them how to collect fruits and how to hunt, as those were his main activities to do for a living. He also taught them how to farm vegetables on the little crop he had on the backyard of his cabin. It was a new day. Marina and Charlotte went to take a walk on the beach while holding each other’s hands. It was the siren who suggested to do this, although she was not sure about why. The feeling of their hands intertwined made both girls feel happy, so they stayed silent the whole time enjoying each other’s company.“I will treasure this moment forever,” Marina said out of the blue, surprising Charlotte. After the conversation they had had on the previous day, the pirate girl got into a state of high emotional sensitivity, something she had never gone through before as she had always hidden her emotions when she was part of Captain Anna’s crew, and all to give the impression of being a fierce, aggressive and fearless woman. But now with Marina, there was no need to act, and being able to show off her emotions was something new for her. “Captain Anna… You are back…” Charlotte said trying to sound happy.“As alive as always, matey,” Anna answered while getting closer to Charlotte. “And I see you have been good as well,” the captain said once she was standing right in front of her shipmaster and offered a hand to help her to stand up.Charlotte took Anna’s hand and stood up, and once she was on her feet she hugged her captain. Marina slowly opened her eyes. Her head was pounding a lot. She tried to massage her temples to ease the pain but she could not move her hands. It was as if they were pinned to her body. Marina looked down and she could see she was wrapped with a thick rope that made her keep her hands pinned to her torso. She kept looking down and she could see her legs were chained to a ring bolted to the floor. Marina started remembering the day she was kidnapped: tied up in the very same way, but with a fishtail instead of legs.The sound of a grunt from the cell next to hers brought Marina out of her thoughts. She looked in that direction and she saw Ismael with his hands tied behind his back and his legs chained to the floor. “Ismael!” Marina exclaimed in a muffled scream. “Are you okay?” Ismael heard the girl but took him a while to figure out the direction where her voice came from.
