CHAPTER 9 THE FINAL STAND
“Ismael!” the two girls exclaimed.
“How is this possible?” Captain Anna asked surprised.
“I am much more than you can imagine,” Ismael replied while standing using a spear he had on his hands for support.
The ship gave another jolt, pulling everybody out of their surprise. “Get the cannons ready! This man has brought something with him to attack us!” Captain Anna ordered and her crew obeyed. Right before they could get in position, various giant tentacles emerged from the water and started attacking the pirates, and they tried to defend themselves using their sabres and some guns they had. In the middle of the chaos, Ismael threw his spear at the man holding Charlotte, hitting him in the chest. The girl took advantage of this and pulled herself off his hold. She immediately went with Ismael and he started to cut the ropes binding her.

It was late at night. Charlotte was laying on the bed with Marina and Ismael sitting on each side of it. Marina was holding Charlotte’s left hand while Ismael looked at them both. Even though Charlotte’s wounds were not as bad as the ones she had the first time they met, they were still bad enough to keep her unconscious for a long time. It has been a month since the incident with captain Anna had taken place, and Charlotte and Marina were getting accustomed once again to living with Ismael. Now that there were no worries to deal with and Charlotte no longer was a pirate, it was necessary to do changes in her life. After taking two days to calm down and checking if there was anything to save in the shack, Charlotte and Ismael started working on the few crops that were left in the back of the house. They were not enough to earn money by selling them in the market of the town, but with Ismael and Marina’s combined efforts, they were able to get fish to sell. It was not easy for Marina to gather the fishes knowing they would be used for food, but she knew it was necessary for giving support to her friends. Marina was surprised by Charlotte’s words. Did she love her? How could she know that? Marina wasn’t so naïve as to not understand Charlotte’s feelings, but she has not experienced them herself. Since unmemorable times, the ocean has been a place full of mysteries that mankind has always tried to understand. Mysteries that lie far beyond the surface of the water, where the sunlight does not shine anymore and no human being can go. One of these mysteries is about a strange creature whose mere existence has captivated thousands of people, but at the same time has been put on doubt, as the idea of a living being half human half fish seemed impossible. Just like humans, there were many different types of sirens: males and females who took pride in their fish tails of different shapes and colours; and among all of them, there was one that stood out the most, thanks to her beauty, pale skin, bright aquamarine tail and vibrant pink hair. One clear morning, Marina was swimming in the outskirts of her community when a shoal of fish quickly swam towards her. The siren stopped her swimming and allowed the fish to get closer to her; she was worried that something bad was happening if the fishes were swimming so fast.“What is going on little friends?” Marina asked the fish. It was a new day. Captain Anna woke up with the very first rays of sunlight and prepared herself for the day. She left her quarts and started to make a lot of noise to wake up her crew.“Wake up you lazy rats! Sun is shining and there is no time to lose!” Anna shouted in her attempt to wake her sailors. The fuss was so much that everybody on the ship started to get up, including Marina who was slightly disoriented due to the sudden ruckus.Marina started to look around her trying to understand why there was so much noise, but she could only see the bars of her cell. After doing her observation, she felt something weird happening with her body right in her lower half. She looked down to her tail and she was surprised with what she saw. When she woke up, Marina was confused. The last thing she remembered was arriving at a beach and hugging Charlotte, but her surroundings were different from the beach she had arrived. She was now on a room with walls colour light brown, and she was laying on something soft while covered with a white cloth. Marina took it off and she could see her tail was gone once again, replaced by human legs. Marina stood up from the bed after making a huge effort as she still did not know how to use her new legs, and once she was standing she started to walk with clumsy steps towards the door. She opened it and found herself in another room, with a table in the middle of it, a cylindrical object in a corner and a window from which she could see the ocean. It has been a month since Marina and Charlotte were rescued by Ismael, and since then everything has been good for both the siren and the pirate: after seven days, Charlotte’s wounds healed completely, and she immediately tested her body to make sure it had no sequels. For her good luck, nor her strength nor agility were affected, and the last vestiges of her wounds were some recurrent headaches, for which she was drinking a herbal tea prepared by Ismael. Once Charlotte was recovered completely, she and Marina helped Ismael with his daily house chores.He taught them how to collect fruits and how to hunt, as those were his main activities to do for a living. He also taught them how to farm vegetables on the little crop he had on the backyard of his cabin.
