Varek felt her fear before the shouting started.

He had been lying on top of the blankets in room nine with his boots on, staring at the ceiling. The connecting door stood shut. He had not touched it all night. Then something cold and sharp turned over behind his ribs. It was not his own. It was a stranger's panic, folded small and tight, and it pulled him up off the bed like a hand in his collar.

He was on the service stair before he'd finished thinking about it.

He was on the service stair before he'd finished thinking about it.A scullion stood frozen in the passage with a dishcloth in her fist. She pointed at an iron-banded door hanging off its hinges. Varek went through it.Senna stood in the middle of the steward's office with her back rigid and her bandaged hand clamped against her ribs. Her face had gone the color of ash. Dain hovered in the doorway, wrecked. And behind the desk, upright in his chair, sat a dead man with a black bolt through his heart. Her eyes found Varek's. They were wide and bright and f

Dain wouldn't look at her.He sat on the windowsill of the Vaelkarn guest hall with a whetstone in one hand and a short blade in the other. He drew the stone down the steel. Drew it again. The blade had been sharp an hour ago. It was sharper now than it had any reason to be.Pine smoke filled the room, and under it a sour edge she knew from her father's hall. Fear.Grey dawn pressed against the glass. Behind him the three guards who had come up from Vaelkarn Hold slept on their cots in a row, boots on, mouths open. A bell had rung at first light. Nobody would leave Cairnhold until the Examiner was finished. Nobody had slept much anyway."You look terrible," Dain said to the blade."I haven't slept.""You look terrible and engaged." His mouth twitched. "It's a good look on you. It goes with the bruises."Any other morning she'd have thrown a boot at him. She stood in the doorway with her back against the frame and her bandaged hand pre

The cold room under the Council wing smelled like a lake in winter.Varek stood among the slabs with his breath smoking in front of him. The cellar had been cut into the root of the mountain, a vaulted tunnel of black stone where Cairnhold kept its dead until their Houses came to collect them. Four slabs. Four sheets, stiff with rime. An orderly slept upright on a stool by the door, chin on his chest.Nobody had told Varek to come here. Nobody had told him not to. He had walked out of the Archive Room, passed the stair to his own bed and kept going down.He lifted the nearest sheet. The boy under it had freckles. They stood out like spilled pepper against skin gone the color of tallow. A bolt had taken him high in the shoulder. From the wound, ice had spread across the chest in fine branching lines, as if someone had pressed a frozen river against his ribs and let it set. His hands lay open at his sides.Joren Reeve. Nineteen.Varek had been nineteen on the eastern ridge. He had stopp

  • Marked By My Enemy   Chapter 7 Senna

Four guards were dead and the Council wanted to talk about paper.Senna sat at the long table in the Archive Room with her right hand wrapped in wet linen. The frost had climbed to her wrist before the healer cut it away. Her fingers felt borrowed. She flexed them under the table and got pins and needles to the bone. The room smelled of beeswax and old charters. Rolled parchment crowded the shelves to the ceiling. The lamp hissed. Somewhere below, a door banged and a man shouted a name that nobody answered.Across from her, Varek Rhoswyn hadn't changed his shirt. The torn shoulder hung open. A scab ran dark along his collarbone where something had grazed him. He sat very still, the way a man sits when he has decided not to look at someone. She hadn't looked at him either. She was doing a poor job of it. Her eyes kept landing on that scab, then on the line of his throat above it, and she hated them for it.Someone had put a mark on him, and the wolf under her ribs took it personally. S

Varek was already moving before the second toll of the alarm finished ringing, the wolf surging up under his skin so fast the seams of his shirt tore at the shoulder.Senna didn't slow him down. She was already three steps ahead of him in the corridor, bare feet silent on stone, and neither of them said a word about the fact that they were running toward the danger together instead of away from each other in opposite directions like sense would have suggested. The stairwell emptied into a knot of Council staff running the other way, robes and lanterns and one elder shouting orders nobody was listening to. Varek shouldered past without slowing. Somewhere below them another window went, glass raining down three floors in a sound like ice breaking on a lake. He caught Senna's arm once, on the last landing, when she nearly went down over someone's dropped lantern, and neither of them said anything about how naturally his hand found her elbow before either of them had decided to let it.Th

  • Marked By My Enemy   Chapter 5 Senna

Senna didn't remember deciding to open the door. The wolf under her ribs had decided first. Her hand was already on the latch, and then Varek Rhoswyn was standing in the gap between their rooms, close enough that she could see the exact shade his eyes went when the wolf in him was awake and watching.Neither of them stepped back. The corridor behind him was empty. Whatever chaperone the Council had assigned to keep two fated wolves from doing exactly this had apparently decided a locked door was precaution enough, and forgotten that neither of them had ever needed a door half as much as everyone kept assuming."This is a mistake," she said."Probably." He didn't move either. "Doesn't seem to be stopping either of us."Up close, he didn't look like the boy who'd run that raid five years ago. He looked tired in a way that had nothing to do with the hour, shadows under his eyes like a man who hadn't slept well since long before tonight. She hated that some small ugly part of her noticed
