EVELINE

Uncle.

The word echoed ominously in Eveline’s head as she shifted her gaze from Damon to the man she had fucked the night before.

This could not be happening. Damon never mentioned having an uncle. Neither did his father mention having a brother. And even if he was to have one, why was it this man?

“This happens to be my hospital,” Lucian replied coldly.

“I thought you were in exile,” Damon said. He was still staring at his uncle with that hate in his eyes.

“You thought wrong.”

Lucian turned back to Eveline, his face suddenly serious. “We need to talk about your father’s condition. Perhaps somewhere private.”

She swallowed, as memories of last night invaded her head. His touch, his tongue, his skin on her skin…

“Will…will he be alright?” she stammered.

He gestured down the hall. “This way, Miss Hart.”

She pursed her lips, but followed him all the same as he walked away.

He led her around the corner quietly, then stopped in front of a room. Through the glass on the door, she could see her father lying on the bed, breathing through an oxygen mask.

“He’ll be fine,” Lucian’s voice cut into her thoughts. “But not for long.”

“Why not?”

He held up his clipboard, frowning down at it. He looked nothing like the man she had met the night before. No, this man was a doctor, in charge of a life.

“His condition is too severe, but I’m sure you’ve heard it before.” His blue eyes met hers again. “It’s a nervous disorder, wholly unknown. His wolf is fighting it, but it’s only getting worse. And at this rate, it might affect his ability to shift.”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean that your father is currently a danger to himself; and to others; at this point.” He lowered the clipboard. “I might have to take him into my personal care.”

“Your personal care?”

He nodded. “Away from here, away from people he could endanger if he shifts out of control. I will have to treat him privately.”

“What’s it gonna cost?”

His eyes dropped to her clothes, then back up at her face.

“You didn’t go home?”

She felt her neck heat up again. “No.”

“You should. And take a shower too. You still smell of…me.”

Right. As if his mark on her neck wasn't already doing enough to remind her of him.

“What we did last night was a mistake,” she snapped.

“Is that what you would call it?” His eyes twinkled as he stepped closer. “You sounded like you wanted it more than I did.”

“I just…wanted to take the edge off.”

“I see.” He cocked his head. “I suppose my nephew was the cheating fiance you were talking about.”

“I didn’t know Damian was your nephew.”

“Of course you didn’t.” He smiled and leaned against the wall. “Doesn’t change the fact, though.”

Which was what made it worse. She thought she was running from one Vale, but ended up fucking another one.

She pursed her lips. “I’m not here to talk about that. My father’s life is on balance here.”

“He’ll be in my personal care, like I said.”

“And I asked what it was going to cost.”

She hoped it was something she could afford. Damon had been the one taking care of her father for a couple of months now. and now that she had caught him cheating…

The corner of Lucian’s lips lifted in a sly smile, and she saw his eyes drop to the mark on her neck. It started to burn again, as if in response.

“It’s not a matter of money, dear.”

She almost hissed in frustration. “What is it?”

Lucian stepped closer, his eyes burning brighter. “I will require you to move in with him as well.”

“You want me to…You want me to move into your place.”

“Your father needs all the care he can get,” he said simply, with a shrug.

Eveline turned, looking through the glass at her father. He looked so frail, lying on the bed.

She thought about refusing Lucian’s terms. He could be a good doctor, he could be good in bed, but he was also Damian’s uncle. If they were from the same family, how could they be any different? Why would she want to agree?

‘It’s not like I have a choice' she thought.

Lucian’s face was blank when she turned back to him. “How long would the treatment take?”

“Hard to tell.”

“Fine. It’s a deal.” She held up a finger. “But nothing happened between us. last night was only a mistake.”

“I’ll be expecting you at my place by four o'clock,” was all he said.

“The hotel?”

“No.” He took another step closer to her. “I’ll text you the address. Wear something pretty.”

She felt her breath catch in her throat as his scent filled the air. She tried to take a step backwards, but her body betrayed her. Her wolf tugged her closer, wanted to rip off that white coat and feel his muscled body…

“I wasn’t aware we were going on a date,” she mumbled.

“It’s not a date.” Lucian stepped closer, one hand caressing the side of her neck. “It is a deal that you have to make, for your father’s sake.”

Before she could reply, someone cleared their throat.

They both turned to find Damon standing at the other end of the corridor. His eyes seemed to glow with anger and suspicion, and this gave her a bit of satisfaction.

“Well, how is he?” Damon asked, walking up to them.

“That is yet to be decided,” Lucian replied.

They looked nothing alike, Eveline realized, yet there was a certain pride that they both had in their postures. Like alphas, about to rip each other apart.

“Exile looks good on you, uncle. I’m surprised you didn’t stop by to say hi to the pack.”

Lucian’s eyes flashed red. “I am not in exile anymore. And yes, some day, I will stop by and say hello.”

He leaned forward, until he was barely inches away from Damon’s face. “Then, I will claim every dime that belongs to me.”

EVELINEHer desk was close to the window, in the Psychology department. The open workspace held two desks apart from hers, each near the tall windows. They were already occupied, but one of them, a young man with short brown hair and an easy smile looked up first.“Hey there,” he said, standing and offering a hand. “You must be the new one. I'm Mason. I’ve been here about four months.”“Eveline.” She shook his hand. “Nice to meet you.”“And that's Amber. Say hi Amber.” The other intern, a young woman with dark-framed glasses and a tightly pulled-back ponytail, only glanced up from her screen. Her expression remained flat.“You're two months late,” was all she said. Mason winced, but Eveline smiled lightly. “Yeah, my father was sick,” she explained. “I had to stay with him until he stabilized. That’s why I couldn’t join you both sooner.”Amber’s mouth twitched. “Convenient timing. You know, some of us just show up when we’re scheduled.”Mason shot her a nervous look. “Come on. Fami

LUCIANThe next morning, Lucian came down the stairs just as Eveline was slipping her arms into a light jacket by the front door. He frowned, looking at the clock in the living room. It was 7:42 AM. “Where are you headed?” She looked up sharply. She had not heard him descend the stairs. “Hey.” She adjusted the strap of the bag on her shoulder. “I’m going to the hospital.”“The hospital.” Lucian lifted a brow. “For my internship?” “Oh, I'd forgotten about that.” “Thanks again, by the way for standing in for me,” she said, pulling on a pair of sneakers. Her hair had been tied back as well, and she was wearing a very formal wear of white and black. “That was the whole idea,” Lucian replied. “I did that so you could stay here and look after your dad.”She paused, turned around to meet his gaze again. “Yeah, I know. The original agreement was that I’d stay here and look after my father until he was stable.” Lucian resisted the urge to release a long sigh. He knew where she was go

EVELINE Two days passed uneventfully, with Lucian and Eveline nursing Marcus back to health. On the third morning, Eveline sat beside Marcus’ bed with a small tray of medicine. He accepted the cup without complaint, swallowed the tablets and wrinkled his nose at the aftertaste.“Alright, get your rest, father,” she said, getting to her feet. “I’m tired of resting,” he replied. “Every day in this bed. Every day looking at these walls. A man needs something to do with his hands.”Eveline turned to Lucian for help. He stood nearby, writing on his notepad, and he turned at the complaint.“If you want to get out for a while, we could take you into town,” he offered. “Take a stroll, check out the sights, go shopping…”“Oh, no.” Marcus shook his head. “You’ve done enough already.” When Lucian opened his mouth to counter, he held up his hand, stopping him. “I heard that you cleared the bills, sir. And I want to let you know that I appreciate it more than I can say.” “You've thanked me

EVELINEWhen Eveline stepped into the hospice room, following closely behind Lucian, the first thing she noticed was that her father's eyes were open.He still looked tired, with shadows under eyes and his skin pale as milk. But then, he turned his head slowly when the door opened and managed a faint smile when he saw her. “Eveline,”he said in a rough voice, holding out one hand to her. “Father.” She crossed the room in a few quick steps and took the chair beside the bed, reaching for his hand. It felt warmer than it ever had. “You’re awake,” she said, the words catching slightly in her throat. “How do you feel?”“Like a corpse.” He turned slightly. “It must have been worse this time around.” “Well, you certainly scared me,” she chuckled tearfully. “Oh, my apologies, dear…”His gaze moved past her to the doorway, where Lucian stood with his arms loosely crossed. He studied him for a moment, then looked back at his daughter. “Did the marriage go through?”Behind her, she heard L

EVELINEShe woke to the sound of birds chirping outside her window. For a while, she sighed in satisfaction, taking in the warm air and the soft sunlight and……the pain in her neck. Eveline groaned as she sat up slowly, one hand already pressing against the base of her neck where a dull ache had settled. She remembered the ride home, watching the dark trees sliding past the window. The comfortable silence, while she leaned against the window. What she did not remember was falling asleep. She did not remember walking upstairs. She did not remember getting into bed, or tucking herself in or opening the windows. Frowning and still rubbing her neck, she swung her legs over the side and stood. She felt heavy, and it didn't help that her wolf slept on, dragging her down with drowsiness. “I need some coffee,” she mumbled, heading out of the room. Downstairs, the villa smelled faintly of citrus cleaner. Fern and Silas were already at work in the dining room, moving with their usual qui

LUCIAN “What?” The ghost of a smile was still on her face when she turned towards him. “You don’t need to do that for me,” she said. Lucian stared at her, surprised and irritated. She had just declined him, firmly and without hesitation, after he had offered to double her internship pay and remove the stress of a job that was wearing her down. Most people in her position would have accepted without a second thought. This lady simply shook her head and told him that she was declining. “You’re being difficult,” he said in a low voice so that Tammy wouldn’t catch on to what he said. Eveline’s eyes narrowed slightly. “I’m being practical. I don’t need you to solve every problem for me.” “It’s not about solving problems…” “I can handle it.” He held her gaze for a long moment, then exhaled and looked away. She returned to her call. “Tammy, I’ll call you later, okay? Yeah…I’m fine. Talk soon.” She tucked the phone into her pocket and released a sigh. When he t
