VIOLET

My heart thumped hard in my chest as I slowly raised my head to see Alpha Ansel, the man I was supposed to be getting married to, sitting on his throne with a murderous glare plastered on his face.

“I…” The word lingered on my tongue as I watched my best friend—no, the person I had assumed was my best friend—walk in and move closer to the Alpha. Kira whispered something into Alpha Ansel’s ear before stepping away from him. Our eyes met for a brief second, and I didn't miss the devilish smirk on her face.

Whatever was going on had to do with the mark, and it was all Kira’s doing. She wanted so badly to see me go down, even though I had never done anything to earn her hatred.

“You'd better be right about your accusations,” Alpha Ansel grunted before shifting his gaze from Kira to me. “Strip her and show me that you're right.”

It felt as though my world was crumbling at my feet. Kira took a long stride toward me, her lips curved into a sly smirk.

My father hastily turned to me. He gripped my shoulders, and I felt his hands trembling. His eyes softened as he whispered in a shaky voice, “Violet, for the love of the Goddess, tell me what you did.”

A tear slid down my face as I saw the look on my father's face. For the first time since I was born, I saw my father looking scared. I wanted to believe he was worried about me, but no, he wasn't. My father couldn't possibly be worried about the daughter he had always wanted dead in place of his wife.

“I'm sorry,” I cried out as I felt something pierce my side, cutting through my dress before a hand yanked the fabric off my body.

I stood there in just my panties and bra, hot tears streaming down my face as I burst into tears.

“I would rather die than lie to you, Alpha. Your mate is carrying another man's mark!” Kira yelled, pushing me to the floor.

“Violet!” my father yelled out my name in a tone I could only describe as panic and fear.

The hall erupted in murmurs as everyone present seemed to have something to say at the same time.

“Now...” Kira stepped in front of my father, cupping his cheek. “You now know what happened. What are you going to do to get yourself out of the mess your dear daughter made?” she whispered in his face.

Bile rose in the back of my throat as I watched my friend have fun with my situation.

She looked happy. She looked far too happy for someone who had claimed to be my friend. Someone who had vowed to stand by me through thick and thin.

“Now that you know of your crime, I shall pass my judgment,” Alpha Ansel announced.

I felt my chest tighten in fear.

What could my punishment be? What punishment could my foolish act of revenge bring upon me?

“Alpha...” My father dropped to his knees. The ground seemed to shake beneath me, and I clenched my fists at my sides.

I felt ashamed of myself. I wished it were all a dream. I wished the past twenty-four hours had been nothing but a dream.

“My daughter—no, I have sinned against you, Alpha. Please, give me a chance to correct my mistake,” my father pleaded.

My breath hitched as I heard those words from him. He seemed terrified of the judgment the beast would pass on me—on us.

“For failing as a father, and for plotting a scheme against your Alpha...” He paused midway through his sentence, and I felt beads of sweat roll down my face.

I wanted to yell that he had made me do what I did. If he hadn't been a manwhore, I wouldn't have had the nerve to share a bed with a stranger. If he hadn't cheated on me with my best friend, I probably wouldn't have thought of seeking such shameful revenge.

But I couldn't say any of that. It would only make my punishment more severe for exposing the Alpha's personal affairs in public.

“I shall behead you in front of everyone, and your company will be taken over by the council. Your daughter will be stripped naked in front of the pack members and stoned to death. Anyone who tries to help you will be considered a traitor, and they will face the same judgment...”

My father burst into tears, his muffled sobs reaching my ears.

I wanted to crawl over to my father and apologize for what I had done, but I couldn't move. I felt glued to the floor, my body trembling with shock and fear.

“Guards! Take them away!” Alpha Ansel barked.

I could hear heavy footsteps marching toward us. Fear gripped my entire body as I felt a pair of hands grab my arms and try to pull me to my feet.

“What's going on here?!” a male voice asked from near the exit.

His voice sounded like the growl of a mighty beast, fierce and uncompromising.

The room fell deathly silent. I could no longer hear my father's muffled cries. Alpha Ansel's eyes burned with fury at the interruption.

“I'll ask again, Ansel, and you will answer me. What's going on here?!” the man asked again.

His voice was cold, sending an eerie chill down my spine.

For some strange reason, the voice sounded familiar. Beads of sweat rolled down my face at the thought that the stranger from the previous night might be the same person.

My heart hammered hard against my chest, and I shook my head, my vision blurring as I whispered to myself, “It can't be him. It must not be him.”

RENZO'S POV"Let him go!" my mother screamed, writhing in agony on the floor. "I beg of you. Just let go of my son, and I will do everything you want of me."My hand clenched into a tight fist as anger and pain consumed me. My brother—my half-brother—grabbed me by the neck, squeezing my throat until I began to see stars."Mo—mother," I gasped, stuttering as my beast of a brother tightened his grip around my neck.I shook my head, silently praying that my mother would stop crawling toward us. She had been stabbed severely, but she might survive her wounds if she left me behind and ran. Instead, she kept crawling closer, her body dragging through her own pool of blood."Give it to me, Nadia!" my father growled, watching me struggle against my brother's grip. He didn't seem to care whether they killed me or not. He didn't even bat an eye at my mother, who was losing so much blood.Whatever he believed my mother possessed, that was all he cared about. Nothing more."I... I don't have... i

VIOLET'S POV"You're still not leaving?" I asked, rising from the bed to stare at Kyran, the man who had been with me ever since we'd arrived at the Lycan Pack.He wouldn't tell me why he was staying. He simply stood by the window, gazing outside with his arms crossed behind his back."Not yet."He gave me the same two-word reply he'd been giving me every time I asked why he wouldn't leave.I appreciated him staying with me, but it felt strange, as though he were watching over me like a watchdog.I wouldn't run away if that was what he was worried about. But I doubted the man cared whether I stayed or left."Have you always been like this?" I asked, dragging my feet toward him until I was standing beside him, looking up at the night sky.It was already dark outside, and I wondered how long I would be confined to my room before someone finally came knocking."Like what?" Kyran mumbled without taking his eyes off the sky.I stood beside him and followed his gaze, hoping to see something

RENZO'S POV"His Majesty is here!" the guard announced, pushing open the double doors to announce my arrival.I glanced at my Beta from the corner of my eye, watching him fidget with his fingers. For some reason, he seemed nervous, and I hoped to the moon he had nothing to do with what had happened."It would pain me to have to kill you," I muttered to myself. After one last look at him, I nodded and drew in a sharp breath."Let's go in. It wouldn't be nice to keep the old men waiting."I smirked as I walked into the boardroom, my jaw clenched, my eyes burning with rage, and my shoulders tense.Whatever was ruining my reign was in that boardroom, waiting for me. Whoever was behind the string of failed missions we'd experienced so far was in that room. But how would I know who it was? Would they give themselves away through strange behavior or some suspicious expression?I had no idea."Greetings, Your Majesty the King," the elders greeted in unison.Everyone was already on their feet

RENZO'S POVDo you think she'll ever forgive you if you kill me? I know the look in your eyes. You're a lonely child, and you want to keep her. I could give her to you freely if you let me go."Bullshit!" A deep growl rumbled through my chest.Anger built inside me as I tightened my grip around my dagger, recalling my encounter with the werewolf girl's father. Those had been his last words before I drove my dagger into his neck and slit his throat. He was such an idiot to think he could guilt-trip me into letting him go. Not after he'd interfered in my business.I have no desire to seek her forgiveness. I'm doing her a favor by removing a pest like you from her life."Fucking bastard!" I spat, staring at the dagger in my hand as though the sight of it would ease my pain and rage.I hadn't done anything wrong. I'd done what needed to be done. She didn't deserve what he had put her through. He hadn't had her best interests at heart. He'd only been using her for his own selfish gain.No

VIOLET'S POVYou're going to be safe... with me.The Lycan King's words kept replaying in my head as he carried me out of the dungeon in his arms. The walls of the hallway were splattered with blood, and the floor was littered with the bodies of men I assumed were the guards stationed at the dungeon.I shut my eyes, refusing to believe that the dead bodies scattered across the hallway were the price of my freedom. They were the sacrifice King Renzo Hades had made to get me out of the dungeon. How pathetic. How pathetic of me to think I could lead a simple life for the rest of my days. The men who had been sacrificed for my escape would haunt me forever. They never deserved such a fate."Don't blame yourself for their deaths. You shouldn't think you're responsible for what happened to them, either. They were going to die anyway, and I was the one who made their deaths quick. Not you." King Renzo whispered into my ear as he carried me down the hallway. "You have nothing to do with this.

  • Marked By The Lycan King    Chapter 16

VIOLET'S POV"Thank you," I whispered, unable to stop myself from staring at the Lycan King as he freed me from the shackles that bound me to the chair. My hands hurt so much the moment they were free. For a minute, they didn't even feel like mine. They felt heavy, and pain spread through my body as I winced."Good to see you're still in one piece," the Lycan King, whose name remained a mystery to me, blurted out. His eyes were fixed on my neck as he mumbled something I couldn't make out."I believe you are." I bit down on my bottom lip as warmth spread through my neck, embarrassment creeping into my cheeks.I couldn't help feeling like a fool for making him come to my rescue after he'd warned me against returning to my people. I'd overestimated the loyalty of my own species, believing I would be safer here than if I'd gone with the Lycans."Where's Ansel?" I asked, suddenly feeling uneasy about how easily the Lycan King had reached me, even though there must have been hundreds of gua
