The Wrong Door

Ivy Calloway had shot six hundred corporate galas by now. Enough to know the real photo was never on the dance floor. It was in the service corridors, where nobody remembered to perform for a camera.

The hallway behind the Kessler Atrium ran narrow, lit by emergency strips instead of chandeliers. She'd already ducked through it twice chasing candid shots of the catering staff for the planner's portfolio. Third time, she wasn't chasing anything. She was lost, hunting a bathroom that wasn't backed up twelve deep with women in heels they clearly regretted.

That's when she heard the voices.

Not the loose party murmur bleeding out of the ballroom. Something quieter. Clipped. She should have turned around right there — she knew that even at the time, she would tell herself that later, lying awake — but her feet kept going toward the cracked door at the end of the hall instead. Old habit. A camera around her neck made her brave in exactly the situations where bravery got people hurt.

Through the gap: two men. One in the same black suit; half the security staff wore it tonight. The other in a coat too heavy for a Chicago summer, standing over an open steel case lined with foam, and nested in the foam, shapes she recognised from news photos and had never once expected to see in person.

She caught fragments. A shipment. A name she didn't know. A date two days out.

Her camera did what it always did before her brain caught up — the shutter clicked, loud as a slammed door in that hallway.

Both men's heads turned at once.

She ran. Didn't decide to exactly; her legs just went, camera bag slamming her hip, corridor smearing red at the edges of her vision. Behind her, footsteps. Not panicked like hers. Even. Almost bored.

She hit a service door, shoved through into a stairwell, took the steps two at a time until her chest burnt, and came out on a landing that dead-ended at a fire exit she hadn't planned for. She spun, back against cold metal, camera hugged to her chest like it could stop something.

A man stood at the top of the stairs. Not the coat, not the suit — someone else, dressed for the gala but standing like he'd never once been a guest anywhere in his life. He looked at her the way you'd look at a math problem you already knew the answer to and resented having to write out.

"Camera," he said. "Now."

"I don't know what I saw."

"Doesn't matter what you know. Matters what's on the card." He didn't move yet. "Give it to me before somebody who isn't me finds you on this landing."

Her thumb found the delete button, pure reflex, no plan behind it. He watched her do it without so much as blinking.

"Won't help. Deleting a file doesn't delete it." A beat. "It just tells me you understand how bad tonight is."

"Who are you?"

He crossed the landing instead of answering, unhurried, and she noticed — stupidly, uselessly, the way your brain notices dumb things when it's terrified — a thin scar along his jaw, pale against a five o'clock shadow. He reached for the strap around her neck.

"Please." Her voice came out smaller than she wanted. "I was photographing the catering staff."

He stopped. Hand still in the air between them.

"What's your name?"

"Why does that matter?"

"Because if it's the wrong one," he said, "I'm about to have a considerably worse night than you are."

Below them, the stairwell door banged open. Footsteps. Two sets, at least, climbing fast.

Roland's cabin sat deeper into the woods than the last one, reachable only by a dirt track that wound through timber for the better part of a mile before opening onto a clearing with a single-storey structure and a satellite dish bolted crooked to the roof, the whole place looking like it hadn't seen a fresh coat of paint in a decade."Internet's slow, but it's private," Roland said, unlocking the door, keys jangling against the old wood. "Nobody's traced this address to me in eleven years. I intend to keep it that way."Elena had her laptop set up on the kitchen table within minutes, decryption running in the background while she split her attention across three other windows, one of them a live feed of financial news she kept muted in the corner of the screen. Ivy sat across from her, going through her father's folder page by page now that there was finally time to read it properly, and Gideon paced the small living room the way he always did when there was nothing left to do but wa

Nobody answered the text.Gideon set the phone face down on the dashboard like it might do something on its own if left unwatched, and for a long moment the three of them sat in the church parking lot in a silence that felt thicker than the one before it, broken only by the tick of the engine cooling."We're not meeting a stranger who already knows about the list," Gideon said finally, still watching the phone like it might light up again on its own. "Not without knowing who's sending it.""Agreed." Elena hadn't looked up from the laptop once. "But whoever sent it knew about the list before we did. That's not something Draeger's people would tip their hand on. If anything, it reads like somebody trying to get ahead of Draeger, not somebody working for him, which is a different kind of dangerous than what we've dealt with so far.""I'd sit on it. See what else surfaces first." Roland's voice carried the flat caution of a man who'd been burnt by exactly this kind of message before; in so

  • Marked By the Merciless Mercenary   The Woman in the Photo

Elena's thumb hovered over the trackpad for a long moment before she finally clicked it, the small sound of the laptop's speakers crackling to life in the confined space of the car.The video opened on a woman sitting at a plain table, the same woman from the photograph in Ivy's father's folder, dark eyes steady on whoever held the camera. She looked younger here, though not by much, maybe a year or two, her hair pulled back tight, hands folded in front of her like she'd rehearsed the posture beforehand and was determined to hold it no matter what came next."My name is Renee Castillo," she said, voice steady despite something tight underneath it. "I worked as a compliance auditor for Sable Group Logistics for six years. I'm recording this statement because I don't trust that I'll survive long enough to give it to a federal investigator in person."Ivy's breath caught. Beside her, Gideon had gone completely still, watching the screen with an intensity that made the rest of the car fee

"How many?" Gideon called back, already moving toward the corridor's mouth, box still in one hand."Two SUVs. Four men that I can count." Elena had her back against the corner wall, phone up, filming without seeming to film, angling it low against her hip, careful not to make the gesture obvious. "They're not Draeger's people. Different uniform pattern. Tactical vests, no company markings at all.""Volkov," Gideon said the name like a curse. "He must have picked up the same trail we did. Which means Vera Okafor's phone wasn't only being watched by whoever took her. It was being watched by two different people, and neither one of them was working together."Roland was already pulling boxes off the shelves, fast and efficient for a man his age, muscles clearly remembering work he hadn't done in years but hadn't fully forgotten either. "We don't have time to sort through this properly. Grab what you can carry. Leave the rest."Ivy shoved the folder into her bag and reached for the neares

Nobody spoke for the first ten minutes of the drive. Outside the window, farmland gave way to strip malls and then to the flat grey sprawl of exurban Ohio, gas stations and chain restaurants blurring together at highway speed.Roland followed in his own car, Elena beside him after they'd argued briefly about splitting up versus staying together, an argument Gideon had won by pointing out that two vehicles gave them options a single convoy didn't. Ivy sat in the passenger seat of Gideon's car with the key from unit 114 clenched in her fist, watching the highway markers count down the miles to Toledo, and tried not to think about the black SUV parked outside a storage door that might already be empty by the time they arrived."They'll clear it out," she said finally. "Whatever's in there. They've probably already taken it, and we're driving four hours for nothing but an empty room and a locked door somebody bothered to relock behind them.""Maybe." Gideon's eyes stayed on the road, chec

They were still standing in the parking lot when a car turned off the county road, slow and deliberate, headlights off despite the overcast morning. It rolled through the gate they'd left standing open, tyres crunching over the same cracked asphalt they'd crossed twenty minutes earlier.Gideon had Ivy behind him before she'd even registered the sound of tyres on gravel, weapon drawn, Elena already moving toward cover behind her own vehicle. The car rolled to a stop thirty feet out. A man climbed from the driver's seat with both hands raised, empty, visible, the universal posture of someone who'd done this before and knew exactly how close he'd come to getting shot for it."I'm not armed," he called out, his voice carrying easily across the empty lot. "My name is Roland Ferris. I'm a private investigator. Diane Calloway hired me eleven years ago, and I've been working this case, on and off, ever since.""My mother hired you." Ivy's breath caught somewhere in her chest, the words barely
