Kain

Hour by hour, it became clear that lying to the world had been a mistake. They were taking my supposed relationship with Tova seriously. Worse, the lie hurt when the woman I loved stood right in front of me. The strain settled into my chest. I needed this madness to end before it spiraled into something irreversible.

“You know,” Athena said that morning when she arrived to cleanse the house, “I never thought you’d involve yourself in something so small-minded. I would have blamed Jax. But you and Riven? Never.”

I didn’t answer. She lingered, watching me, waiting for a reaction. When none came, she shook her head and gathered her tools.

“It’s almost impressive,” she went on. “And tragic. The Alpha House has turned into a breeding ground for scandal.”

“That’s enough,” I snapped. “If you’re so curious, ask the moon goddess yourself. You’re closer to her than most. Ask her what she was thinking when she bound my brothers and me to Lira.”

"Maybe it's a test," Athena said calmly.

Lira I watched from the window as Kain helped Tova out of the van. She smiled up at him. He did not smile back, but there was no frown on his face either. No irritation. No resistance. They looked perfect together. But Kain loved me. So why was I bothered?I turned away from the window, already aware of how petty the feeling was. Tova was my friend. This was all fake anyway, a performance for the council and the pack, staged for a world that would never accept what I truly was to these brothers.I should not have felt anything, but my wolf did not care. She snarled inside me, clawing at my ribs like she wanted to tear through my skin, drag me back to that window, drag me back to Kain, and make sure he never touched Tova again. She did not understand politics or safety, or the difference between real and pretend. She only understood that our mate was touching another woman.I exhaled as the mark on my chest flared hot.I pressed my palm against it through my dress and felt the heat b

Zuri"Maybe you should focus on your own pack," I said. "Your reputation is tanked. Look at your guards—drinking and smoking on duty. If you're trying to position yourself as a better leader than Kain, you might want to actually lead."His expression darkened. I shrugged. Why was he frowning as though I were lying? Blackwood was falling apart. Even a child could see it.Selena laughed. "She's not wrong, Garrick. If our father weren't so stupidly male-obsessed, I should be the Alpha."Her confession was interesting to hear. I really hated how men always thought they were the ones born to lead. Selena was obviously wiser than Garrick, and even more deadly."You should go rest," Selena said, standing. "Let me take you to your quarters."I nodded and we headed upstairs."What's with you and Astoria?" I asked. "I noticed you're always hard on her.""Because she's an idiot," she said, deadpan. "My brother will tire of her eventually. She's just like furniture. Like what Lira is to your brot

ZuriA guard appeared soon after and informed me the Alpha would see me. I was led into the main hall. Garrick and Selena sat at the far end in high-backed chairs, finishing business with pack members. When Garrick’s eyes found me, interest sparked.“Zuri,” Selena said, surprised. “You came all the way from Wild Fangs? That’s a long journey.”I shrugged. She gestured for me to sit. Minutes later, the hall emptied.“It’s good to see you again,” Garrick said. “I respect that you keep your end of agreements. That’s rare.”I forced a small smile.“So,” Selena said, leaning forward, “what’s new at the Alpha House? I’m hoping for something interesting.”“I wouldn’t know,” I said quietly. “I was exiled.”Their reactions were instant.“What?” Selena said. “Because of that omega brat?”I said nothing.“But why?” Garrick asked. “You’re family.”“Tell that to Kain,” I said. “He’s despised me since I questioned his judgment. Since he and his brothers started sleeping with Lira. She’s turned them

ZuriIn all my years of living, I had never felt betrayal this sharp. Never felt this level of disrespect from someone I valued. From someone I loved.People like me were expected to bow our heads and accept degradation quietly. Kain had sent me away believing he had broken me. He thought I would lower my eyes in shame, too humiliated to defend myself for the supposed impropriety of standing naked before him. He believed I would drown in regret, call myself foolish for ruining everything. Maybe I did, briefly. But that was now in the past. “Zuri, you need to let Kain go,” my mother begged the night before. “Please. He doesn’t want you around anymore. You’re young. You have options.” I looked at her and felt nothing but resentment. I clamped my teeth shut holding back words sharp enough to wound. She was still my mother. Respect was not optional."Look at yourself," she said. “How long do you plan to chase shadows? This stopped being about Elora a long time ago. This is about you

Lira I woke to cold sheets and silence. The space beside me where Kain had slept was empty, the indentation of his body already fading. He'd left early for Alpha duties. The sun barely crested the horizon, pale light filtering through the curtains.I stared at the ceiling, trying to hold onto last night: Three weeks. Just three weeks, and then it's done.Three weeks of pretending Tova was the woman he wanted.Three weeks of watching him touch her, smile at her, play the devoted suitor.Three weeks of lying.I pressed my hands against my eyes. I'd agreed to this. I knew what it would cost.I forced myself out of bed. The floor was cold as I padded to the vanity in the corner. My reflection stared back: tangled hair, shadows under my eyes, the faint flush still on my cheeks from last night. And beneath my nightdress, a faint glow.I pulled the fabric down. The triple mark sat just above my heart—three interlocking crescents that shimmered even in the dim light. It was brighter and wa
