I lay awake in bed, staring at the ceiling. Tova was beside me, already asleep. I couldn't sleep. Tomorrow was the ritual. Tomorrow everything might end.

None of the brothers had come to see me tonight. Perhaps it was an instruction that I must remain "pure" for the ritual.

But I could sense them.

First, Jax. His familiar scent drifted under the door. I heard him pause outside. Imagined his hand on the doorknob. But he didn't knock. I heard his footsteps walking away.
