The air had gotten more dangerous. We were no longer the only ones standing uninvited on the forest ground.
Something was moving behind the trees, something that couldn't be seen, it only showed its presence by the rustling sound of leaves.
My eyes finally caught a glimpse of something or someone moving behind the trees at an unnatural speed.
I gasped.
"Shh," the stranger who was hiding me behind himself whispered.
The mark on my wrist flared up, and I held it with my other hand, not looking away from the trees.
"What is that?" I whispered as it circled around us.
"Something that shouldn't have found you."
I felt as though we were trapped. Unknowingly, I took a few steps away from the stranger who was just waiting for the figure to appear.
The forest went silent....too silent. I could feel my heart beating loudly.
Suddenly, a figure lunged towards me.
I gasped, stumbling back, but before I could even process what I was seeing, the stranger was suddenly in front of me. He didn't move at human speed. Within the blink of an eye, he was standing there.
He caught the attack mid-air, his grip locking around the creature’s throat.
A loud growl echoed in the forest, it was deep, raw, and unreal. I felt the ground shake below my feet.
For a moment, I didn’t know if it came from him… or the thing he was holding.
My eyes widened as I witnessed the scene in front of me.
The stranger's posture had changed.
Every muscle in his body was tense. The creature struggled against his grip, letting out a distorted snarl.
The creature in his hold looked human but it was far from human, its eyes were blank...but beside the emptiness, the color was amber...like an animal. But the iris was not only amber, they were glowing. The nails...they were not nails, they were claws. His hands were gripping the stranger's arm, trying to free himself, but the hold kept getting tighter.
“What the hell,” my voice broke.
“Get back!” the stranger snapped without looking at me.
I didn’t argue this time.
I stumbled further away, my back hitting a tree as I watched in horror.
“I told you not to come back here, little moon.”
Something was different about the stranger as well, his voice had changed. It was darker, filled with authority...like something inside him was surfacing.
Something not entirely human.
The creature in his hold twisted unnaturally, slipping from his hold and lunging again.
But this time toward me.
My body froze. I hid my face behind my hands, waiting for the pain. But it never reached me.
The stranger was faster than the creature.
He intercepted the creature's action mid-motion, slamming it to the ground with a force that shook the leaves beneath them.
Another growl erupted, this time, I was sure it was from the stranger.
I saw the fear in the creature's eyes, but he suddenly got over it and then something else changed. The creature's body started changing in an inhumane way. I could hear the sound of his bones cracking.
I froze in fear.
But before something else could happen, the stranger snapped the creature's neck. Life left its body in front of my eyes. I didn't get enough time to understand what was happening in front of me, or was it even real?
The stranger was now facing me, but I couldn't look at him.
I was still watching the lifeless body of that creature twisted in a way no human's body was possible of doing.
"Hey," the stranger's hands were now cupping my face, the same hands that took the life of that creature a while ago.
"Look at me."
I finally looked at the man, whom I knew nothing about. Was he my savior or something far more dangerous than that creature?
Those eyes, there was an unknown comfort and familiarity in them.
"I know you're scared and confused, but you'll have to trust me, right now."
Did I trust him?
No.
I shook my head in a no.
“I don’t need your trust. I need you alive."
"Then why should I trust you?" I quickly argued.
"Because I will never let anything happen to you, little moon," there was a promise in his voice.
"What was that?" I finally asked.
He quickly glanced around the forest.
"I'll explain everything later, but right now we have to go. The others are coming," there was urgency in his voice. I knew he was stating the truth.
I decided not to argue and listen to him this time.
We started running.
We didn't stop until we saw the end of the forest.
I quickly took a step out of the forest and turned to face the stranger when I noticed he had stopped running.
"Go back home."
"What about you? Are... you going back?" I questioned, even though it was difficult to get the words out with my heavy breathing.
The stranger, on the other hand, didn't have one drop of sweat on his face.
"This isn't about me. Next time… I might not get to you in time," his voice was deep, and his tone was dark, like there was a warning behind it.
"That's why I need to know what that was?"
"This is not the right time."
I shifted my eyes towards the forest. He was right. There were others like that creature in the forest.
But how could he kill that creature so easily?
"We need to inform the police," I blurted out.
"You'll go back to your house and do nothing, you won't tell a soul about this."
I hesitated but decided to think about it later.
"Who even are you?" This time I was annoyed by not getting any answers from the stranger.
"I am Lucien. little moon."
Hey everyone, Thank you for giving this story a chance. It truly means more than you know. I hope you enjoy reading this story. Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments. I’d love to hear what you think. ❤
My mind was a mess. My thoughts were scattered. I couldn't stop thinking about the woman I saw in the lake. Who was she? Why did the lake show me her image? The thoughts had been haunting me, no matter how much I tried to get rid of them. I knew one thing, all my questions would be answered at one place only. But how could I go there?Would it be wrong? The questions were testing my patience and sanity. I stood in front of my window, staring at the forest in front of me. For some reason, a part of me wanted to run into the forest and search for my answers but another part of me knew, my answers were somehwere else. "Fuck this," I yelled the words loudly, before storming out of my bedroom. I took the car keys, I didn't like to drive but my focus was on something else. The sky remained clear blue over my head, there were no clouds, unlike the situation inside my head. Kai had been checking up on me constantly, but how could I share all of my issues with him when he didn't know
My world had flipped upside down after learning the truth. Of course, I was grateful to be a part of this family. But a small part of me wanted to know more about my other parents. What happened to them? How did they die? How did I survive the fire? But no matter how much I wanted to know the truth, I had no way of knowing about it. I asked my mother in the morning about the place where she found me or where my parents died, but she said it would be best if I stopped running behind the answers that would just make me more curious...and eventually hurt me.Because, according to her, no matter what, I found the answer would not be in my favour. Running behind shadows could only lead to a path of darkness. But it was a missing part of my life. And, when I asked her if anyone else had survived the fire, her response was even more brutal. The fire wiped out the entire neighborhood. There were no survivors.... except for me.A heaviness settled in my heart. My phone started ringing
Kai went home without uttering a word about what he had witnessed. For someone who just survived getting murdered, he was behaving pretty chill. I was done being in the dark, if I wanted answers, I had to start finding them on my own. I was on the call with Kai. Strangely, he was the one reassuring me and saying it would be fine and we could talk about everything later. But it was my Kai, unpredictable. Once I was sure he was fine, I had another thing to take care of.And I knew from where I should start. "Mom," I called her. She put the tea cup on the table and looked at me through her reading glasses, "Yes, dear."Mom would always sit near the window after dinner and enjoy a cup of her favourite tea while reading a book.I hesitated. "Are you alright?" she asked when I didn't respond. "Can I talk to you?" "Of course, come sit with me," she closed the book that was in her hands and removed her glasses. I sat down next to her. I was not the only one who had been acting weird
"Are we going to talk about what happened?"It was the first sentence he had said that was directed towards me. Ever since we came back from college, he had been walking inside the room continuously while blabbering words that no human could understand. But what was I supposed to tell him? There were no words that could comfort the storm brewing inside his head. "I think it's best if you just forget about it," I tried, even though I knew those were the worst possible words I could have said. Kai stopped walking and turned to face me.There was no humour on his face. He looked like a lost puppy, and I knew how he felt because I had been feeling the same lately. We came to my house after returning from the campus, my parents were in a meeting with Kai's parents and a few others from the neighborhood. "This is not a horror movie, I can't just forget about it," he argued. "Would you at least stop walking, you are making me dizzy," I asked as he started walking again. "Pardon me
My mind was a mess. I felt like I didn't know anything. I couldn't trust my shadow. The burning sensation in my mark was back as well. From the past, I knew it was not a good sign. I held the mark tightly with my other hand and closed my eyes. I was sitting alone in the library. The 2 other people who were studying earlier left almost 30 minutes ago. There was silence, a deafening silence. I focused on the sound of the large, ancient-looking clock hanging on the wall. Then, the ticking of the clock started getting quieter. I didn't pay much attention to it and kept my eyes closed. Soon, the whispers returned. Just like before, it started with many voices until only her voice was left among them. "Find the truth."The red-eyed girl was staring at me. She was carrying the same distressed emotions. She opened her mouth to say something else, but I opened my eyes. I looked around, and I was still alone, but 15 minutes had passed. I grabbed my stuff and walked out of the li
Ever since Kai made the recent discovery, I couldn't help but be more paranoid. And to make it worse, I was not able to find any new spot to start training again. "What's going on with you?""What?" I asked Kai. We were walking towards his car after having coffee in the evening."You've been staring at your phone for the last 5 minutes.""I was...texting," I lied. "Technology is not that advanced yet," he raised his brow, and stopped almost 2 steps away from the car.I stopped as well and looked at the black screen of my phone. I opened my mouth to say something, but froze when I felt something different around me. "Celeste," a cold voice called my name. I gasped, and a similar reaction came from Kai. Seraphine was standing behind Kai. He turned around, holding his heart. "Where did you come from?" he asked.Seraphine looked at me with the same bored expression she always carried, "I want to talk.""You know her?" Kai questioned again. I didn't respond immediately."I don't k
I was not able to control the water at all. In fact, I didn't know if it was possible, but somehow I had gotten worse. The water had been acting strangely around me, and I had been lucky as no one had noticed it so far. The classes and college had been the same. Lucien had tried talking to me,
Silence. The silence could be deafening. But I was taking back the control of my life.I was done skipping classes, not focusing on my future. I sat in the library for 3 hours and studied for an upcoming exam. All my notes were updated, and my assignments were already finished. I stood in the h
I had always heard that trust was fragile, but for the first time, I knew how betrayal felt. I thought Lucien was my friend, someone who would always be on my side, but I was wrong. I was walking out of the college building when a familiar face appeared, waiting for me near the exit. He opened h
I had to stop making decisions without thinking about them first. It was what I thought after sitting near the lake for another hour alone. Once again, no signs of Lucien. I drove to the lake alone and decided to practice for a few hours before heading back, but I realised this place connected m
