I gasped and shot upright, chest heaving.

My hands—I stared at them without thinking. The skin was smooth and tight, with no age spots. Twenty years old.

I'd been reborn.

"Elara?" A trembling voice came from nearby.

I whipped around. My sister, Selene Moonveil, stood in the doorway, staring at me with the same shock on her face.

She wore the white leather dress of Silver Moon's unmated females. Her long hair spilled over her shoulders, her face smooth and unwrinkled, her eyes bright and clear.

Our gazes locked. Then we both spoke at once.

"You too—"

"You too—"

We cut off mid-sentence.

The next moment, we rushed at each other and threw our arms around one another.

"Moon Goddess..." Selene's voice shook. "I thought I was the only one who came back."

"Me too." My throat felt raw. "Selene, we're here. Three days before the engagement."

Yes. In three days, the two packs would unite through marriage.

The arrangement our families had made was simple.

Selene Moonveil, eldest daughter and gentle healer Omega, would marry Ethan Grimwolf, Silver Moon's Alpha—cold, brutal, S-class.

And I, Elara Moonveil, warrior Beta, would marry Kaden Frost, Black Forest's scribe—a soft-spoken, scholarly Beta.

In our past lives, those marriages had destroyed both families.

Selene had withered under Ethan's indifference and his childhood sweetheart's cruelty until depression consumed her. Depression consumed her until it killed her.

Kaden and I had been a disaster, too. He'd thought me too rough. I'd thought him too soft. We broke our mate bond before we even hit our third anniversary, and the whole pack laughed at us for it.

Selene pulled back and took a deep breath. Her eyes blazed with determination.

"Elara, let's switch."

I blinked. "What?"

"The engagements." She gripped my hands tightly. "You marry Ethan. I'll marry Kaden. This time, we won't make the same mistakes."

I looked at her. Then I smiled, "I was thinking the exact same thing."

That evening, I packed my bags.

"Elara, shouldn't we talk to the family before we switch?" Selene bit her lip.

I took a deep breath. "Selene, this is our choice. The elders think you're gentle enough for a dominant Alpha like Ethan, and I'm feisty enough for Kaden, but they're wrong."

"But not even discussing it with Mom and Dad..."

"Discuss?" I let out a bitter laugh. "They arranged these marriages. We're just pawns. Once it's done, it'll be too late for them to object."

I continued, "Selene, just put everything on me. I left a letter in Mom's room explaining everything. Don't worry. I'll say switching was my idea. They won't blame you."

Before I'd even finished, hurried footsteps sounded from outside.

"Elara! Get out here!"

It was my mom, Diana!

My blood ran cold. How had she found out so fast?

"Selene, I'm going!" I grabbed my bag and dove through the window. Under the moonlight, my bones began to reshape. Gray-brown fur erupted from my skin as my limbs hit the ground. I lowered my body and bolted toward the pack border.

"Stop! You brat!" Diana's roar exploded behind me, followed by the sound of her shift—bones cracking and popping.

I pushed harder, leaping over brush and splashing through streams.

"Have you lost your mind!" Diana's wolf form was a full size larger than mine, and faster. "The elders arranged this marriage. You can't just switch whenever you feel like it!"

I clenched my jaw, unable to answer in this form.

"Elara! Stop!" Diana was gaining on me. I swerved sharply into a thicket of thorns. The barbs tore through my fur and pain shot through me, but I gritted my teeth and kept going.

Her body was too large to follow.

I used the advantage to burst out of the thorns. Ahead, the pack border barrier appeared—a pale blue shimmer marking the edge of Ethan's territory.

I didn't hesitate. I leaped across the boundary.

"Elara!" Mom stopped at the edge of the thorns, shifted back to human form, and glared at me from beneath her cloak.

I shifted back too, straightening my torn clothes, and shouted, "Mom! I'm going to get married! If it doesn't work out, I'll come home myself!"

"You—"

Before she could finish, I shifted again and disappeared into the Dark Forest.

Diana's furious shouts echoed behind me, but I didn't look back.

Later, I heard that Cynthia lost the baby. Marcus' reputation was destroyed, and he got shipped off to the most remote patrol unit in the pack. His future was basically set—he'd slink back to human society in disgrace. The two of them were stuck together for life.Their house turned into a war zone after that, and they became the pack's favorite joke. But none of that had anything to do with me anymore.Things with Ethan and me were finally getting back on track and getting better.Ethan and I finally found time to go back to my family and face the music.I stood at the front door and took a few deep breaths, my palms slick with sweat."Don't be scared," Ethan said, squeezing my hand tight. His amber eyes caught the moonlight and gleamed softly. "You're my Luna now. Whatever happens, I've got your back. Keep your head up."I took a deep breath and felt the warmth of his hand against mine. The second I pushed the door open, familiar scents hit me—the smell of home."Aria." Grandpa sat a

"Alpha, we have absolutely nothing to do with each other, and I have no idea why this girl's been running around causing trouble using my name." Marcus' words cut through the air without a hint of mercy, and Cynthia stared at him in disbelief."Marcus, how can you be so heartless? I'm yours now, and you're saying we have nothing to do with each other?"The moment Marcus finished speaking, something shifted in Cynthia's eyes. I caught it clearly—that perpetual look of pitiful innocence flickered and darkened with malice before she whipped around to face the elder, tears suddenly streaming down her face. "Elder, I was wrong! I shouldn't have been jealous that Elara got to marry Ethan. She pushed me just now, and that's why I said all those crazy things..."She covered her face as her shoulders shook violently. "You know I've only ever had feelings for Ethan..."Murmurs rippled through the lower-ranked wolves surrounding us. The elder's gaze ping-ponged between Ethan and me, and suspicion

I forced myself to ignore the heat of his breath and shot back casually, "Shouldn't that depend on you? If you were up to it, I'd already be pregnant by now."Instead of getting mad, Ethan glanced at the prey on the counter and let out a low chuckle. "Alright then. Tonight I'll make sure to eat plenty of that stuff and get you caught up real quick."I'm not gonna get into what happened that night, but let's just say for a long time after, I didn't dare bring any of that stuff home. Even when I caught something during a hunt, I'd just give it to the other Lunas instead. After everyone had their fun teasing me, Lisa suddenly changed the subject. "Hey, guess who I saw yesterday?"Everyone looked at her, confused, and Lisa continued with satisfaction. "Last night I went out looking for my son, and I spotted Cynthia and that Marcus guy holding hands and walking through the woods together."Rebecca shook her head immediately. "No way. Marcus has a Luna and pups. Even if Cynthia's wild, she w

"Ethan, don't you dare walk away from me!" Cynthia had woken up at some point and was sitting on the ground, soaking wet and looking downright pathetic. She pointed at me with a trembling finger and shrieked, "She pushed me in! She tried to kill me!"The crowd around us went dead silent. Every pair of eyes turned to stare at me, and I could see doubt, shock, and accusation written all over their faces."Elara, how could you do something like this!" Linda said, her voice dripping with judgment. "Poor Cynthia lost both her parents when she was just a child, and you have the heart to hurt her like this?""Exactly! Outsiders are all the same—rotten to the core!"The accusations continued to come, one after another. My fists clenched tight, and my Alpha instincts screamed at me to march over there and knock some sense into these gossiping idiots. But Ethan grabbed my arm before I could move. His palm was burning hot against my skin, and his grip was so firm I couldn't break free even if I t

The sound of fists pounding on the door made Ethan's entire body go rigid, and he quickly straightened up. "Babe, you get some sleep. I need to step out for a minute."Fury surged through me, and I glared at him. "There are so many people in this pack—do they really need you specifically? Do you even realize what tonight is? It's our mating night!"Ethan finished dressing and walked over to me, picking up my clothes to help me into them. "Come with me then, my mate. Cynthia's parents saved my life, and I can't just ignore their only daughter when she's in trouble. So please, come with me, and when we get back, you can yell at me or hit me—whatever you want."I froze at his words, then shoved his hands away and dressed myself. "Fine. Let's go."I walked out without looking at him, my face cold, but I'd barely taken two steps when I felt warmth wrap around my hand. I tried to shake him off twice but couldn't, so I shot him an annoyed look."Babe, slow down. It's dark out here," he said,

  • Marked by the Wolf King After Rebirth   Chapter 3

Within two days, Ethan and I stood at our mating ceremony. The pack members had thrown everything together with surprising efficiency.Ethan's parents had died in a rogue attack years ago. As for my own family—I couldn't risk inviting them. Diana would kill me when she arrived, and I wasn't ready for that conversation. So the gathering consisted entirely of pack warriors and their mates, filling the pack house with their presence."I'm so jealous of Elara," Cynthia said out of nowhere. "She gets to marry Ethan. She's so lucky.""Not like me..." She dropped her head and started sobbing, and the entire hall went dead silent.I walked straight up to Ethan, stood on my toes, wrapped my arms around his neck, and kissed him hard. When I pulled back, I shot Cynthia a smug look. "Yeah, I am lucky, aren't I? Ethan's got the career, the power, the body... Well, not every Omega can handle a top-tier Alpha like him. A weak little Omega probably couldn't even survive an Alpha's claiming bite." I sl
