I held the document in my hands that confirmed my release from the pack, signed with the Alpha's own name, Matteo Donovan.

Just as I was about to leave the office building, Elder Jason Briggs called me again.

He said, "The Alpha doesn't know it's you who's leaving. If you tell him, he'll definitely ask you to stay since you're his most trusted Beta."

I lowered my eyes slightly and replied, "No need to trouble him with something so trivial."

Jason still refused to give up. "You've been at his side for four years. You've handled almost everything for him. If you leave, he won't know how to manage without you."

He kept trying to talk me out of it, but my mind was made up.

"His life will be more comfortable without me anyway. I'm just an extra presence that doesn't belong. My pack is at war, and I have to go back.

"Plus, I've reached the age for my marking ceremony, so I really don't have the energy to stay by the Alpha's side anymore. Since the Alpha already approved my request, I'll spend the next month briefing his new Beta on everything, and then I'll leave."

Jason tried once more to convince me over the phone. However, seeing how firm I was, he finally gave up.

After hanging up, I started packing my belongings.

I had lived in that house for three years. Aside from daily necessities, I threw everything else away.

Sitting in the empty room, I felt my heart hollow out too. For a moment, memories from eight years ago came flooding back.

Eight years ago, I left my poor, struggling pack and went to the Norland Pack to study. At college, I met the Matteo's sister, Penelope Donovan.

We hit it off quickly despite her privileged upbringing, and soon we became best friends. She never cared about where I came from and even brought me into high society circles, introducing me to influential wolves.

At one gathering, she introduced me to her brother, the pack's greatest man, the Alpha. I was instantly drawn to Matteo's tall, handsome appearance and fell hard for him.

Throughout college, I channeled my love for him into improving myself, all just to get a little closer to him.

After graduation, I got my wish and became Matteo's Beta. Just thinking about seeing him every day made me so excited that I could not sleep for a whole night.

I thought I would bury that love in my heart forever, until that accident happened.

Matteo was poisoned with wolfsbane laced with aphrodisiac. I was about to call the hospital when a powerful force suddenly pulled me onto the bed. Before I could react, his kisses were all over me.

That night of passion was beautiful yet fleeting. It felt like a dream I never wanted to wake from.

The next morning, I opened my eyes and saw him standing by the window. Bathed in sunlight, his chiseled face looked even more striking. I stared at him, completely mesmerized.

Noticing my gaze, Matteo turned to look at me and said just one thing.

"I'll take responsibility for what happened last night."

My heart skipped a beat.

Just when I thought my dreams were finally coming true, he handed me a check.

He said, "I know you like me, but I already have someone I love. This money will make sure you live comfortably for the rest of your life, so consider it my compensation."

I froze, suddenly remembering that last night he had called out someone else's name: Sabrina Monroe.

I had heard from Penelope that Matteo had always carried a torch for his first love, and her name was Sabrina. Although she had abandoned the pack to become a healer in a more powerful one and had countless flings, he still waited for her.

It was precisely because I knew he loved someone else that I had kept my feelings buried. Perhaps it was the alcohol from the night before, but somehow, I found the courage to speak up.

Taking a deep breath, I called out to Matteo as he was about to leave.

"I don't want compensation. I want to be with you."

Matteo stopped in his tracks and turned to frown at me. "Alyssa Whitlock, do you not understand what I'm saying? I told you I already have someone I love. There will never be anything between us."

I blurted out everything that was buried deep inside me. "I know you love someone else. When she comes back, I'll leave quietly, but until then, can you at least try being with me?"

Faced with my sudden confession, Matteo froze.

Just when I was bracing myself for rejection, he handed me a card with a hotel address written on it.

"Tonight at ten. Don't keep me waiting."

It had been a year since I last saw Alyssa.During that time, I threw myself into running my pack, keeping busy so I would not have time to think about her.I thought time would heal everything, but when I opened her Twitter account and saw her glowing in a wedding dress under the sun, my heart still ached painfully.[You're all welcome to join my marking ceremony.]The pen in my hand slipped as I read the caption, leaving a large ink stain on the paper. Her Twitter account was the only place I could find out how she was doing. Clearly, she was doing just fine without me.Penelope had also seen the post and excitedly bragged, "Alyssa even invited me to be her bridesmaid! I heard her fiance is tall, handsome, and really gentle..."She rambled on while my head buzzed, making it impossible to hear the rest.I muttered under my breath, "She's having a marking ceremony so soon."Throughout the year, Penelope had occasionally given me updates about Alyssa. She had a boyfriend in her

When I arrived at the Wildlands, I found Sabrina barely recognizable. The place was overrun by rogues, and for a weak woman like her, she had no choice but to sell her body to survive. She was a shadow of her former self, chained by the ankles and trembling in a corner. When Sabrina saw me, she was already half out of her mind, staring at me for a long time before snapping awake like from a dream. Then, she crawled desperately to my feet like I was her last lifeline."Matteo, I was wrong... Please just let me go. If you get me out of here, I promise I'll never bother you and Alyssa again."When I remained unmoved, she burst into tears, trying to use them to win my sympathy."They've all been abusing me while you were gone. You can't imagine what my life has been like. After all these years together, you can't treat me this way."I stared silently at her face.I used to be obsessed with her, but she had lost all her innocence and beauty, leaving only madness and greed. It was b

Not long after, Penelope returned. The moment the two old friends saw each other, they fell into a long, tight hug."Penelope, you're here," Alyssa said softly. After a few words of pleasantries, Penelope turned to face me and gave Alyssa an apologetic smile."I know you didn't want to see Matteo, but I still let him come find you. I'm really sorry for disturbing your peace."Alyssa smiled. "It's not your fault. We did need a chance to end things once and for all, so you actually helped me out."Penelope pressed her lips together before finally asking Alyssa the question she had been wanting to ask."If Sabrina had never come back, would you have chosen to stay with Matteo?"I lifted my head slightly, waiting for her answer."No," Alyssa answered decisively without a moment's hesitation. The answer was what I had expected. If we went back to before Sabrina returned, I had not yet experienced the pain of loss and did not understand what love meant.Hence, even without Sabrina

I did not know how long I stayed at the coffee shop. It was not until midnight, and the staff started closing up, that I was finally asked to leave. The streets at night were eerily quiet, with only a handful of people still wandering around. My heart felt completely hollow. I could not help thinking about how ridiculous I had been all those years.I had devoted all my time and energy to a woman who did not deserve my love while ignoring the one who actually loved me.Alyssa had once given me her whole heart, but I was too blind to see it. If only I had recognized my own feelings sooner and stepped in when Sabrina was bullying her.If only I had not let Alyssa down.Nonetheless, it was too late for any of that.I sat dejectedly on the curb by the side of the road. As if the universe wanted to mock me further, lightning flashed across the sky and rain began pouring down, sending everyone on the street running for cover. The downpour beat mercilessly against my body, and I felt l

The moment I got off the plane, I rushed straight to the coffee shop where Alyssa and I had agreed to meet. Just thinking about finally seeing her again after so long made me restless with excitement.I waited anxiously, and when I heard the door chime ring, I looked up to see Alyssa walking in with her bag.She had changed so much in the month we had been apart. She would always wear her business suits, her hair tied neatly in a bun, her face calm and distant, as if she were forever on duty.Instead, she wore a light green floral dress, her hair flowing loosely over her shoulders, her expression soft and unguarded. For a moment, it felt like I was back in college, meeting that shy, innocent version of her all over again. I was completely stunned, forgetting to even stand up to greet her.Alyssa set her bag down and sat across from me."Go ahead. What do you want from me, Matteo?"I snapped back to reality and gave her an awkward smile."Alyssa, it's been too long."I fought

Penelope called Alyssa, and I stood nervously to the side waiting for her to answer. Those brief 30 seconds felt like decades passing by.Finally, the call connected, and Alyssa's voice came through from the other end."Hello, Penelope."Hearing the voice of the person I had been longing for, I tried hard to resist the urge to rush forward and snatch Penelope's phone, waiting anxiously instead.Penelope explained why she was calling, and my heart felt like it was about to leap out of my chest.Alyssa was silent for a moment before saying, "Okay, I'll see him one last time."Those few simple words gave me hope. Since Alyssa was still willing to see me, that meant there was still a chance for us.I immediately booked the earliest available flight and was about to leave when Penelope stopped me.She said, "Matteo, you don't look too good. You probably haven't rested in a long time, right? Why don't you get some sleep first? Alyssa already agreed, so she won't stand you up."I did
