Chapter 2

Author: Lennox Chase
I knew Tilda just wanted to see me embarrassed.

But I wasn't stupid. I wasn't going to storm out like she did in my last life, giving everyone in the room and the Pearsons something to gossip about.

I remembered how everyone back then had said Tilda wasn't calm enough and wasn't fit to be the Pearsons' eldest daughter-in-law. After that, Samantha never treated her kindly, and Tilda suffered endlessly in the Pearson household.

-

I took the microphone, smiled confidently at the guests, and said, "Mike had an important deal to handle today. When it's time for the toast, I'll be standing in for him. I hope you all don't mind."

As soon as the words left my mouth, the whispers in the room stopped.

From her seat at the head table, Samantha gave me a look of approval.

The wealthy and successful Pearsons cared most about appearances and other people's opinions. In moments like this, a daughter-in-law had to stay calm and show she could carry herself like the lady of the house.

Tilda noticed Samantha's approving look as well, and her eyes flashed with anger.

[Gross. Just wait till the toast. I'll make sure you embarrass yourself.]

Honestly, being able to hear people's thoughts felt like a blessing. Having that secret ability made everything so much easier.

When it was time for the toast, I lifted my gown and walked toward the stage with a steady pace.

Tilda's eyes were glued to me as she silently counted, [One, two, three…]

Right at the third beat, I stepped aside to fix my heel, and Tilda went crashing to the floor, breaking her glass and getting the champagne all over herself.

"You okay?"

Phil rushed to help her, but his thoughts betrayed him. [What an idiot!]

All eyes in the room turned to watch, while Samantha's face darkened with anger.

"How clumsy! You don't even act the way a Pearson should!"

"I-I'm sorry. I didn't mean to," Tilda stammered. Her words sounded apologetic, but her eyes were burning with resentment.

If it were me, I would've chosen to stay low and live quietly this time around.

But Tilda couldn't stand to see me living well, so naturally, I wasn't going to let her walk all over me.

-

Because of Tilda's blunder, the wedding ended quickly.

From start to finish, Samantha never gave Tilda a pleasant look. But when she looked at me, her eyes were warm with approval.

She even took my hand and said, "I'll make sure Mike comes home tonight to keep you company and make it up to you."

And sure enough, Mike really did come home that night.

He walked in while loosening his tie, looking completely drained.

I hurried over to grab his clothes for him. "You must be exhausted today."

He just gave me a glance and didn't respond.

In my past life, the servants had whispered that Mike didn't even come home on his wedding night. Tilda had waited in the room all by herself, becoming the butt of everyone's jokes.

When she tried to complain to Samantha, she only got scolded. Samantha told her it was her own fault that she couldn't win a man's heart.

While Mike was showering, I set up the room. I laid out fresh sheets on the bed, poured him a drink, and tidied up the couch so I could sleep there.

When he came out and saw the arrangement, a flicker of surprise crossed his eyes.

I quickly explained, "You can sleep on the bed. I'll take the couch."

He narrowed his eyes at me. "Is this your way of playing hard to get?"

He was draped in just a robe, his chest partly exposed, with water droplets still clinging to his skin. He looked… Well, I couldn't deny that his body was impressive.

I quickly averted my gaze.

"No, I'm not playing hard to get. We don't really know each other, so sleeping in the same bed would just feel awkward for both of us.

"And… if possible, I'd like to make a deal with you."

His brow lifted. "What kind of deal?"

"Since this is basically a business marriage, why don't we just live our own lives privately and act like a couple in public? I married you so I could have stability and not worry about money. I don't expect love."

When he heard this, the corner of his lips curved into a faint smile. "You're smart. I like that. Fine, I agree."

The truth was, I wasn't capable of controlling a man's heart anyway. In the Pearsons, his attitude toward me would depend entirely on Samantha's attitude.

I had no intention of ending up like Tilda in my past life, targeted and isolated by everyone. That wouldn't do me any good.

And besides, he'd been abusive to her before. I had no desire to provoke him and end up beaten, too.

So my choice was simple—keep the peace, coexist, and focus on my own goals.

This time around, I just wanted to earn money, build my own company, and succeed entirely on my own.

That night, Mike came back.He was drunk, and the second he walked into the room, he stumbled and dragged me down with him. We both hit the floor hard."You're drunk. I'll make you some hangover soup," I said, trying to push him off, but he wouldn't budge.Instead, his hands went to his shirt, fumbling with the buttons, and those intense, possessive eyes locked on me. That was when it hit me—he wasn't actually drunk."Mike, think about what you're doing. We're just partners. You're not allowed to touch me!"He suddenly covered my mouth and whispered in my ear, "Doesn't matter. You're my wife. I'm gonna touch you because I want to."I shoved him away with all my strength."No! I'm divorcing you. You can't touch me."The words hung in the air, and the whole room went silent.Mike's face darkened."I knew it. I knew you were gonna leave me."He let go of me, looking crushed. "You're so heartless. Did you already forget about me?""What are you talking about?" I asked, confused

Mike explained, "I already told my mom to set up cameras all over the house. When we caught Phil slipping poison into the drinks, we swapped the poisoned wine with drugged wine instead. That's why the two of them passed out."Then his voice suddenly lowered. "But you seemed really scared that I'd die. Are you in love with me?"For some reason, when he said that, my heart skipped a beat."Of course not," I answered quickly. "I was just afraid that if you died, I wouldn't have anyone left to rely on."He grinned, his smile bright. "Is that so?"-Once Tilda and Phil were locked away in the basement, I finally let out a breath of relief. The two people I feared the most were out of the picture.By now, I'd made enough money. My next step was asking Mike for a divorce.I kept waiting for the right moment, but Mike had been so busy lately that he barely came home. All I could do was bide my time. One day, I overheard a servant saying Phil and Tilda had been begging to see me.I w

When Phil heard what I said, he completely believed me. After all, nobody else knew about his twisted hobbies except him and Tilda. He sneered, "Just wait till I deal with that woman. Once I get rid of Mike and her, you'll be mine. I'll take care of you."With that, he walked off.Ha. Did he really think I was that stupid? There was no way I'd ever stay with him.-Right after, I went straight to Mike.Honestly, whether he lived or died wasn't supposed to matter much to me, but this time around, he had helped me a lot. He let me earn my own money and even shared his work experience with me generously. When I told him what Phil said, he looked surprised."Do you have any proof that Phil wants to hurt me?"I pulled out a recorder and played back the conversation I just had with Phil. The first part was me purposely flirting with him, and even listening to it again made me cringe."I only did that to get him to trust me," I explained quickly.Mike didn't answer, but his express

I realized right away that what I said made Mike misunderstand, so I quickly waved my hands. "No, no, that's not what I meant. I was just explaining why there was a conflict."He suddenly asked while staring right at me, "Have you ever thought about doing that kind of thing with me?""Of course not," I answered immediately. "I told you, all I want is to rely on you and live a worry-free life.""That's it?"I nodded firmly. He didn't say another word. He just stormed out and slammed the door behind him.I had no idea what I said that upset him. And honestly, I didn't want to know. All I wanted was to carry out my own plan.-The next day, Mike didn't take me with him to the company. Instead, he told me to head to the branch office on my own.So I threw myself into running the branch. My goal was to make about two million dollars and then leave.Day after day, I chased projects, negotiated deals, and brought in big profits for the company. Samantha told me I could just take my

Over the next few days, I followed Mike to the company and learned a lot regarding business tricks and social skills—the kind of things that really mattered. One afternoon, he surprised me by saying he'd take me out to eat. And not just anywhere—the fanciest steakhouse in town.I didn't expect to run into Tilda and Phil there.Tilda had been cutting his steak, but the moment she saw me and Mike, she dropped her knife and fork in shock. "Skye, you're here, too—" She caught herself, then quickly corrected, "Mr. Mike, Ms. Skye, you're here for dinner, too?"A second later, I heard her thoughts loud and clear.[Damn it, of all times, I had to run into her now. I can't lose face here!]"Yeah," I said with a smile. "We felt like having steak."I slipped my arm through his, and he didn't pull away.Phil scrambled to greet us politely. "Mr. Mike, Ms. Skye."Mike didn't bother replying. He just led me past them and straight to a table.Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Tilda grinding

Just as Mike was about to agree, I pushed the door open and walked in. I greeted the Ravenlandian man, then picked up the bottle of skincare serum he had developed and turned it over in my hand."I'm a woman, so I know skincare," I said. "This only has whitening ingredients. It doesn't fight wrinkles or early aging. You're an expert in this—you should know better than anyone that whitening is just a gimmick. The effects are barely noticeable. So tell me: What makes this formula worth 600 thousand?"The man froze, caught off guard.Mike leaned back in his chair, clearly entertained, and didn't stop me.That told me he was letting me speak freely. So I grew bolder. "That said, this is an imported product, and you've already built up buzz on social media. People recognize your brand and trust it. So, here's what I'll offer you." I held up two fingers."Two hundred thousand?" he asked, surprised."Jake, 200 thousand is already a very generous offer. Think it over," Mike said, eyes
