Se connecterCHAPTER 7: Final Agreement
Elaine’s POV I sank into my bed, face buried deeply into it as I swung my legs violently in the air.“What did I just do, Laura?” I pulled back as I picked my phone up.
“Calm down, girl. I bet he didn’t take you seriously.” Her soft chuckles didn’t calm my anxiety.
“I understand how badly Gary and Elizabeth need to pay for what they did to you, but getting married to a stranger?”
Steve had only stared at me as I proposed the marriage. After a few seconds, he had stood up, walked to me, and extended his hands to me.
“Expect my lawyers once they draft up an agreement.”
My hands trembled as I took his while silently biting my bottom lip at my last-minute decision.
How am I to explain to my dad that I had only just finalized my divorce, but here I am getting married to a stranger?
**** A week went by with no news from Steve or his lawyers. I had slowly given up hope of him accepting my offer when my phone beeped that morning.“Miss Elaine Smith, the Documents are ready. Kindly be at Greyson Corp tomorrow, 12 pm today.”
I jumped to my feet, holding my mouth as I held in my scream. I still had not informed my dad about my decision.
I rushed to the bathroom as I threw off my robe. I couldn’t stop humming while bathing; going to Greyson Corp meant I would get to meet Steve. I wasn’t sure exactly what it was, but I felt I hadn’t shown him how confident I am during our last encounter.
I took my time dressing up I brought out a black dress I had bought a few months ago, hoping to wear it to a date with Gary. I happily tore off the tag and got dressed.
“You look dashing, where are you off to in a hurry?”
I hadn’t expected to bump into my dad in the living room; he had a magazine spread open as he sipped a cup of coffee.
“I need to attend to some business. See you later.” I placed a kiss on his cheek and rushed out, my heels clicking loudly.
Greyson Corp stood still in the heart of New York City. I hadn’t gone out since the divorce. I clutched the hem of my dress, closed my eyes, and steadied my breath.
“You can do this, Elaine.”
Inside the conference room, three lawyers sat, Steve’s personal assistant stood next to them as I ushered myself in.
“I was expecting to see the groom. Where is he?”
Mr Grant let out a chuckle before clearing his throat. “He is in a business meeting. You can carry on, he has signed already.”
My heart dipped a little. I looked towards the door one more time, hoping to hear it creak open and Steve walk in, filling the room with his presence. I sighed when everywhere remained silent.
“Alright, let’s get this done.”
The next five minutes were spent going through the agreement papers, and all seemed well just as we had spoken. I took one last deep breath before scribbling on the paper.
“Well, Congratulations… Mrs Elaine Greyson.” Grant said.
I stepped out of the elevator, walking as I looked left and right. I wasn’t sure what floor I was on.
“Well, well, well, look who we have here.”
I turned around to see Elizabeth with three of her friends laughing; they each had shopping bags in their hands.
“If it isn’t the barren former Mrs Wayne,” Elizabeth said.
I turned around to leave, as I wasn’t about to confront her, but before I could walk away, she pushed me, and I landed on the floor.
“What do you want, Elizabeth?”
“What are you doing at a place like this? Shouldn’t you still be curled up somewhere crying your eyes out?”
I got up and dusted my dress. I wasn’t going to let Elizabeth trample on me again. She had ruined my marriage, stolen my husband, and I wasn’t going to give her any more.
“Well, my husband owns this company.”I placed my arms on my waist as I rolled my eyes at her.
By then, some other workers had gathered, laughing at what I said. Elizabeth came up to me laughing heavily, “You mean you are the wife of Mr Steve Greyson, since when was Mr Greyson married?”
“My husband is Charles Webber, the Chief Director of this company. He has never mentioned Mr Greyson getting married. How dare you claim to be his wife?” the other friend said as she scoffed.
I looked around at the small crowd that had gathered, and everyone smirked as they looked at me with scorn.
“You imposter. Once Mr Greyson hears someone like you claiming to be his wife, he will kick you out of here.” Someone from the crowd spat.
“No…no…wait, people. Let’s give her the benefit of the doubt. Why don’t you call your husband, Mr Greyson, then?” Elizabeth said as she poked at my shoulder.
“Yes, yes, do that.” The crowd was chanting now.
Elizabeth stood, arms crossed, as a tiny smile broke from the end of her lips.
“She is a liar, guys, if at all she is married, why isn’t she wearing a wedding ring?” Mrs Webber said as she grabbed my left hand, flaunting it across the room for all to see how empty it is.
“Stop it, guys. I am not lying.” I bit my lower lip as the crowd bore their eyes into me.
“Let’s pardon her, after losing her marriage, unable to conceive for many years, she has become delusional. We will pardon this if you apologize.” Elizabeth grabbed my shoulders, trying to bring me to my knees.
“Who dares lay a finger on my wife?”
The whole crowd gasped as they quickly went silent. Many covered their mouths as they whispered.
“Isn’t that Mr Greyson, owner of Greyson Corp?”
“Was she telling the truth all along when she said she was his wife?”
I looked back, the crowd divided as a tall, handsome figure strode towards me. Steve Greyson walked elegantly, one hand in his pocket, the other swinging graciously.
When he got to me, he pushed off Elizabeth’s hands from my shoulders, grabbed my hands, and pulled me closer to him.
“How dare you touch my wife?”
Steve’s POVThe rising noise and chaos around took my attention from the business call I was on. “Let’s reschedule. My Assistant will get back to you.” I hung up the phone and looked out the window. The sun had set, casting a golden yellow streak on the window. I dialed the office, but no one answered.“What is going on here?” A young woman lay sprawled on the floor, staff members surrounding her. I took a few steps forward before I sighted Elaine in the middle of it all.She had already gotten a strike from the board of directors; it wasn’t the time for any more drama and chaos. Elaine instantly turned to me, her eyes sunken in as she blinked.“I didn’t do anything.”I recognized the woman to be Elizabeth. The one who had caused an uproar in the media, she had instigated to the public that Elaine was barren.“I would have thought a man of your status would settle for someone more in your league.” She brought herself up and moved to me, “You need to discard her, she wants to hurt my b
Elaine’s POVI paced the hallway as I waited for the doctor to come out. Elizabeth had been wheeled in a few minutes ago, and the doctors and nurses were all attending to her.Steve had stepped out to attend to a business call, and my mind raced with different thoughts. I had gotten married to Steve to take revenge on them both, but I had gotten carried away with the board members, his family, and Vivienne.“You witch.” I turned back to see Mrs Wayne. Gary was standing next to her, breathing frantically as they hurried their pace.“I didn’t do anything…” Before I could plead my case, Mrs Wayne pulled my hair, yanking my head back. I held her hands, trying to force her to let go.“You want to ruin our family. Wasn’t it enough that you couldn’t give our family an heir?” She tightened her grip, and I yelled, calling out to Gary, who just stood watching.Of course, he had always been a mummy’s boy; what did I expect? I finally pushed her off me, shoving her hard on the chair nearby.Gary
Elaine’s POVI had my hands on my head, holding it tight as I paced Steve’s office. “If only everyone would let me be.”“You will do just fine. Your workstation has been arranged.” Steve said.He made no efforts to calm me down; he had opened up his laptop and began working already. “Grant will show you to your work station.” I picked up my bag and left. The whole staff exchanged glances and hushed whispers the minute I walked in. Two girls quietly walked up to, standing arms locked together.“We heard you are the boss’s wife.” The taller one said, hissing afterwards.“Don’t expect any sort of preferential treatment just because you have a relationship with the boss,” the other one added. They both turned sharply, swinging their hair in my face as they walked away.“They love to mark their territory, members pay them no heed.” I turned to see the other staff sitting next to me.“I’m Clara,” she flashed her teeth, pushing her glasses up the bridge of her nose.“Call me Elaine.”The da
Steve’s POVI picked up my phone for the hundredth time this morning, and I glanced out the window, holding my phone tightly as I reminisced on the event of the previous night.Elaine had caught me off guard with how calm and resolved she was at the event.“Stop tapping your fingers on the table, you look nervous,” I said to her.The earlier barrage of questions from the reporters had shaken her up. This event was very important to Greyson Corp, and it was the first time we were making a public appearance as a couple after signing the marriage contract.“I… I can’t help it. I can feel everyone’s gaze on me. I think it was a bad idea having me here.” She said as she took a sip of the wine.Despite her anxiety, she sat straight on the chair, the way she lifted the wine glass, her grip on it precise and cautious.“You are handling yourself just well. This will be over soon.”I said that too early, as less than five minutes later, my family showed up. Lucas, my stepbrother, who had compet
Elaine’s POVIn a few minutes, Steve had arrived at my house. Unlike his normal way of appearing in a suit, he looked very casual. My dad, upon hearing that Steve was around, rushed out and invited him into his study for a “Small talk.”“How do you plan on taking care of my daughter?” I pressed my ear to the door as I held my breath.I could hear my heart pounding heavily as I listened in; my ears were pressed tightly against the door, picking up bits and pieces of the conversation.I was sure my dad would hound Steve, considering all that had happened, but to my surprise, their small talk ended after fifteen minutes.“We need to leave now so we don’t get held up in the traffic.”I kissed my dad goodbye and left with Steve. After navigating his way for a couple of minutes, we finally pulled up in front of the hospital.“Why are we here?” I blurted out.The sight of the hospital building made my heart race, my palms sweat, and my lips quiver. It was the same place I had lost my baby, w
CHAPTER 9: The Price of being Mrs GreysonElaine’s POV“Steve’s fiancée?” I dropped my drink carefully as Vivienne took a seat next to me.“I was hoping it was a lie when I heard Steve had married someone from the… slum.” She crossed her legs and twirled her hair around. There had been nothing in the news about Steve having a fiancée. How was this woman claiming to be his fiancée?“Vivienne, what are you doing here?” Steve barked.“Did you cancel our marriage arrangement, so you could settle for… less?” Vivienne stood up to face Steve, wrapping her hands around his arm.Steve brushed it off, pushing her off lightly. He took a step back as he turned to me.“Is she really your fiancée? I mean… how could we…”“She is my ex-fiancée. I called off our engagement a year ago.” He moved closer to me, eyes bearing into mine. “You swore to never get married, how could you two have gotten married? I have known Steve for twenty years now, and you don’t seem to be his type of woman.” Vivienne wal
