MasukCHAPTER 6: The Agreement
Steve’s POV “What’s the update on the land acquisition? You know how badly we need it as it is tying our project down.”“We still haven’t been able to get in touch with the owner. I think she has been ignoring our emails?” Grant said as he walked alongside me while scrolling on his tablet.
“Then I should get involved. Can you set up a meeting with her?” My brows furrowed deeply.
Acquiring that last piece of land would kick-start the Fashion Court project. I have been waiting for a year now.
“She’s been involved in a lot of media hate over the last few days. Here.” Grant handed me the tablet, where I read the headlines and comments.
“Barren woman.”
From the comments, I could tell her husband had cheated on her, and the world had turned its back on her. She was definitely at her lowest, which was the best time to pressure her into signing the land deal.“I want you to make that meeting happen tomorrow. This is the best time.”
“Yes, Sir, one more thing, Granny has been asking for you for some days now.”
“Didn’t you inform her of how busy I have been?”
“She has promised not to eat anything until you come to see her.”
One thing Granny has always been good at is getting her way. I knew why she wanted to see me, but I wasn’t ready for the conversation.
“Let’s go then,” I said as we walked out of the company building.
**** The steady and rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor welcomed me as I entered Granny’s ward. It always saddened me to see how fragile and frail she had become over the years, the once formidable matriarch of the Greyson family. She had single-handedly raised me after the death of my mother, sacrificing everything and making sure I lacked nothing. I had grown up learning how to run a business, and I had succeeded in building an empire.
“Steve.” She said weakly as she opened up her arms.
To her, I was still her little boy. I bent down and hugged her tightly. She still smelled like lavender, the familiar smell I had grown to love and now miss on occasion.
“I’m sorry, Granny, work has taken too much of my time.” I pulled back and sat next to her.
“The doctors say I don’t have much time.”
“Don’t say that, Granny, you are still the strong Matriarch of the Greyson family, and besides, you have outlived two doctors saying that.” I countered, squeezing her hand gently as I wore a calm smile.
She didn’t smile. “I want you to get married. That is my last wish before I go.”
It’s been the same conversation for the past year now.
“Ever since your last broken engagement, you have stayed away from women. There hasn’t even been one woman scandal about you. I want to see you get married, Steve.”
She never called me Steve except on days she scolded me or when I misbehaved growing up. I knew then not to argue back.
Granny had built an Empire with her grandfather, who had passed on many years back. Granny had single-handedly taken the business up, shutting up board members who felt a woman wasn’t fit to rule them.
Once she set her mind to something, there was absolutely nothing anyone could do to undo it.
“Promise me, my boy,” her voice softened as she brought my hand to her cheek. “I need you to get married within three months.” Her eyes bore into mine.
“Three…” I paused, seeing as tears welled up in her eyes.
Three months was an impossible time to get married. Women knew me to be cold and icy ever since rumors began to spread about me hating women. Some even claimed I was into men.
“Do you think I haven’t been keeping in touch with the media? There have been rumours about you being into men. Getting married will put that to rest.” I knew that was her way of making me see reason, but it was still impossible.
A soft silence hung between us. I simply nodded, hoping she wouldn’t press any further. She had booked a few blind dates for me over the years, but none had met my standard.
They had either been too money hungry, boring, or not his type. Grant had told him he was too picky and was deliberately pushing women away, ever since his last engagement got called off.
‘You still haven’t given me an affirmative response.” She said.
“I can’t promise much, Granny, but I will work on it.”
We spent the next hour talking about business, my childhood, every other topic but women and marriage.
As I walked out of the room, Grant was standing by the doorway, waiting.
“How is Granny?” he asked. Grant had grown up with me, Granny had also taken him in, and eventually, we had become good friends, too.
“You know how stubborn she can be,” I sighed. “She is hellbent on seeing me married.”
Grant chuckled, and I threw him a glare, sending him a warning. He coughed silently.
“Look, the rumours spreading about you are bad. I advised you to get a female assistant, but you refused. Now they think we have a thing going on as we are always together.”
“Well, isn’t that your job? And besides, since when was I ever affected by groundless rumours?”
“It’s going to affect the company if it goes on for too long.” Grant had picked up being stubborn from Granny, amongst other things.
Thick silence hung between us as we walked back to the car. The car soon pulled over, and we got in.
“I just received an email. Mrs Elaine Wayne will be available to have us tomorrow.”
“It’s time to close this deal and start on the Fashion Court project.” I was going to get her to sign the deal, even if it meant doubling up on the offer.
“Brief me on the kind of person Mrs Elaine Wayne is.”
Elaine’s POV“I have nothing to apologize for, neither will I leave the company or divorce Steve!”Mrs Greyson lifted her hands to slap me, but Steve caught her hands mid air and flung it to her side. “How dare you try to hit my wife?” His brows furrowed deeply, his breath heavy and short as his eyes shot up.“You keep defending this woman,” Mr Greyson finally spoke up but Steve caught him short.“This woman right here is my wife! And you will all respect her.”Mrs Greyson laughed sarcastically as she moved her body, she turned away from us, looking back at the reporters. “For this reason, we have decided to live together in this house, as one big family.” She said, smiling. There was no way I was going to live with them, Lucas included. Steve stepped up and shook his head. “Nothing of such will happen!”Ever since his Grandma took him in fully, he had never lived with his father, step mother and Lucas. I could see the veins popping in his neck as he protested.“This is the best solut
Elaine’s POV“You did nothing wrong. She had it coming.” Steve said as we walked down to Elizabeth’s room.“How dare you show your face here!” Gary lunged forward, but Steve blocked him by pulling me behind him.“She had it coming, and if you don’t fix yourself, I will have to sue her for harassment.”Gary laughed; his veins were popping out in his neck. “You have harmed the Wayne heir. She lost the baby.”I shook as I listened. I hadn’t done anything wrong, but it wasn’t pleasant news either. I stepped forward, my eyes boring into Gary’s.“I have had enough of you and Elizabeth, trying your hardest to take me down with cheap little antics,” I stepped in front of Gary, poking at his chest with my finger. “She suddenly came into the picture, ruined our marriage.”I paused and stepped back from him. Gary’s lips parted, but he said nothing. “She pushed me down the stairs, and I lost my baby!”“You said absolutely nothing all that time, you pampered her, you encouraged her antics. You sly
Elizabeth’s POV“I hate her!” I flung my bag on the couch in the living room, as I stomped my feet around.Everything has ended in chaos; this wasn’t what I had planned. How could everything have gone so wrong? The judges had retracted their decision, claiming it was a mistake, and announced Elaine the winner. All of my efforts have gone down the drain; no matter what I do, nothing works. I picked up my phone to check what the media was saying.“Greyson Corp announced as the winner of the Fashion Runway after a huge mistake?”I knew I had to plan something else; I needed to get rid of Elaine finally. Just then, the door flung open, and Gary stormed in. I bit my lower lip and held my breath in anticipation of his outburst.“You incompetent human!”I took several steps back as he got closer to me, lunging forward as he raised his hand. He stopped midway as though realizing something. “You are lucky, you carry the Wayne heir. I would have really dealt with you.”This was not the same man
Elaine’s POV“Stop them from beginning the runway, Steve.”Steve rushed to the backstage area, and I lifted my dress and followed suit. The announcer refused to delay anymore.“As the model from Greyson Corp isn’t here, the judges can proceed…”“I’m here!”I fixed my dress and walked to the stage. The judges nodded their heads as they exchanged whispers. In the audience, I could see Elizabeth; her glare could cut through one’s skin, and a silent protest escaped her lips.“This is lovely!” One of the judges said. The runway show ended well, Steve and I sat down while we waited for the judges to conclude on the winner.“You need to loosen up; your design was the best.” Steve flashed a smile as he rubbed my knees.“Can everybody come back on stage? We are about to announce the winner.” The announcer said.I knew for a fact that the judges loved my designs; they had all nodded in approval, and all I needed to hear was my name being called. I walked gently to the stage.“You really must th
Elaine’s POVThe beeping of the monitors brought me up from the bed, my eyes shot up as I brought my hand to my stomach. Steve was lying next to my bedside, his eyes were droopy, and his hair disheveled.“Elaine, thank God you are awake.” He brushed his hand against my face, and a small, tired smile crept from the corners of his lips.“You are here?” I replied weakly. The smell of anesthetics shot a bitter taste to the back of my tongue. I sat up gently as my blurred vision finally cleared. “Is the baby okay?”I held my breath as I prayed silently. I couldn’t afford to lose another pregnancy.“Everything is okay, Elaine.” He stroked my hair gently as he smiled. He had lost a considerable amount of weight since I had left a few days ago; worry and concern had worn his face down. I instantly remembered Laura saying he felt sorry, and I should give him a chance.“Is the baby fine, Steve?” My voice was low, but it was loud enough for him to hear the fear and anxiety in it.“The doctor sai
Elaine’s POV“Turn on the news, Elaine!” Laura screamed as she burst into the living room.I grabbed the TV remote and turned it on. “Mr Greyson has disclaimed all allegations about his wife, Mrs Elaine Greyson, who was earlier in the week accused of having an affair and bearing a bastard child.” The newscaster read.“In claims by the board of directors of Greyson Corp, of Mrs Greyson’s child not his, Mr Greyson has promised to resign from the position of CEO if it turns out otherwise.”“Isn’t that great!” Laura hugged me.There was no excitement in me; I had been humiliated, disrespected, and thrown out. Just because he stood before a few people to disclaim the allegations doesn’t make it all right. My grip on the remote tightened as I recollected the events of that day. Steve had asked me to leave without batting an eye; he had looked at me with scorn.I turned the TV off and flung the remote on the couch. “I don’t care about anything he said.”“Calm down, Elaine. It’s not good for
