Chapter 1

On the other end of the line, Arnold Greenwood went completely silent for a second.

"Where are you?"

"At… Bailey's house," I said, my voice shaking from the stabbing pain shooting through my arm. Cold sweat ran down my face.

"Stay there. Don't move. I'm coming right now!"

His voice faded in my ears, and before I could say anything else, everything went black.

When I opened my eyes again, all I saw was the blinding white hospital ceiling and Arnold's angry face.

There were dark shadows under his eyes. He looked like he hadn't slept all night.

"Hey. How do you feel?"

I shifted, and a wave of pain shot up my right arm, making me suck in a breath.

"The doctor says your right arm is shattered. Even if it heals well, you'll never hold a paintbrush again."

Arnold's eyes were red as he muttered under his breath, "You're one of the smartest people I know. How could you let Bailey waste ten years of your life?"

I forced a weak smile that hurt more than crying. I didn't even have the strength to argue.

"That moron… I swear I'll end him right now!" Arnold stood up, ready to storm off.

I quickly grabbed his arm. "Don't. Please, I'm begging you."

I didn't want anything to do with Bailey anymore, and I sure didn't want Arnold dragged into it.

Arnold looked at my pale face, then slammed his fist against the wall. "Fine. You just focus on getting better."

He left so fast that he forgot his phone.

I got up to take it to him. Limping past the VIP ward area, I froze when I saw someone I never expected—Bailey.

He was clutching a test report, walking quickly.

We ran right into each other. His eyes landed on my arm in a cast, and for a moment, he looked stunned.

"Cynthia? What are you doing here? What happened to your arm?"

I turned slightly, avoiding his gaze. "It's nothing."

He frowned and reached out like he was going to check my arm.

I stepped back, out of his reach.

"Are you still mad at me?" he asked, hesitating. "Come on. Let me see. How did you hurt yourself?"

I couldn't believe he had the nerve to ask. Without answering, I tried to walk around him.

But he moved to block me and grabbed my other hand. "Okay, I admit I overreacted. I shouldn't have said those things to you.

"But you have to understand me, don't you? I didn't know she was pregnant last year. And to calm you down, I went too far with her…

"We were both wrong. Now it's time to make it right. Lucy's got anemia from her current pregnancy, and I remember you two have the same blood type. You should donate to her."

My mind went completely blank. I stared at him, not believing what I'd just heard. "Can't you see the state I'm in? And you want me to give her my blood?"

"It's just an arm injury," he said, trying to pull me along. "Donating blood won't kill you."

Once I'd gotten myself together, I called home. My mother picked up."Cynthia? Why'd you take so long to call? How's the wedding prep going?"I took a deep breath, trying to make my voice sound normal. "Mom… I'm not marrying him."I was met with silence on the other end for a few seconds. Then her voice came back, sharp with worry. "What happened? Did Bailey do something to you?"I couldn't hold it in anymore. My throat tightened. "Yeah… That's why I'm not marrying him.""It's okay, sweet girl. If he hurt you, then we're not going through with this marriage! I'm gonna teach him a lesson!" My father's voice boomed through the phone. My eyes stung again. "No, it's fine. I can handle it myself."They had always been like this—always on my side, no matter what, letting me be as stubborn as I wanted."Mom, Dad, I'm sorry for making you worry," I said softly, sniffling. Before I could say more, my mother cut in. "You don't need to apologize to us. As long as you're okay, that's all

I spent the night at Arnold's place, and the next morning, I woke up to my phone buzzing like crazy. There were dozens of missed calls, all from Bailey. His texts had blown up my screen.[Cynthia, when did you start hooking up with another man?[No wonder you've been acting all fragile lately. Guess it was just to get some other guy to fall for you.[Get back here right now! Don't make me come after you!]I scrolled through them without a single change in my expression. My fingers felt cold. Then I saw a message from Lucy. It was a photo. She was lying on Bailey's chest while he slept, his skin covered with marks that told the whole story. She looked straight into the camera, smug, as if she'd just won some kind of twisted game.Below the photo was a line of text. [I know you two haven't done it in a while. He's been with me this whole time, and he can't seem to get enough of me.]I stared at it for a few seconds before letting out a short laugh. My chest ached, but mostly

Arnold walked toward me, the light behind him making him look taller, stronger."Arnold? Wh-what are you talking about? Your fiancée?" Bailey's voice shook.Arnold didn't even look at him. He came straight to me, took off his suit jacket, and carefully wrapped it around me, making sure not to touch my injured arm. Then he pulled me behind him, as if I was his, and nobody was going to get near me.Bailey finally seemed to understand what was happening. His face turned dark as he pointed at Arnold. "Are you out of your mind? She's mine!"Arnold gave a short, cold laugh. His eyes were sharp, icy."Not anymore."Before the words could settle in the air, his fist connected hard with Bailey's jaw.Thud!Bailey stumbled, blood already at the corner of his mouth.Lucy screamed and pressed herself against the wall."How dare you!" Bailey spat, clutching his face like he couldn't believe it."I don't mind doing it again." Arnold rolled his wrist, his eyes deadly. That seemed to snap
