Briony's POV

Bettina didn't have an answer for the flare. She checked my palm three times over, pressed two fingers to my wrist like she was counting a heartbeat that had nothing to do with my pulse, and finally just shook her head.

"No wound. No danger anywhere near you." She said it more to herself than to me. "That shouldn't happen."

"Well, it did."

"I know it did." She didn't sound angry, just tired in a way that scared me more than anger would have. "Keep track of it. If it happens again, I want to know exactly what you were doing, what you were thinking about, everything. No detail's too small."

I promised her I would, same as the night before, and went about the rest of my morning with my palm feeling like it belonged to somebody else.

By midday the pack's mood had shifted, and not in a direction I liked. It wasn't loud about it. Nobody said anything straight to my face. It was smaller than that, a woman pulling her son closer when I walked past the training yard, two warriors going quiet the second I stepped into the mess hall, a stare held a beat too long before somebody looked away like they'd been caught at something.

Sage noticed it too. She fell into step beside me on my way back from the well, jaw tight in a way I recognized.

"You seeing this?" she asked.

"Hard to miss."

"It's not the same as before." She glanced sideways at a cluster of pack members who stopped talking the second we got close. "Before it was 'the spare, the breeder,' same old stuff. This feels different."

"You think it's Petra."

"I know it's Petra." Sage's voice dropped lower. "Rowan caught her yesterday telling half the kitchen staff that the ash-root story doesn't add up, that maybe somebody should ask Bettina to explain the recipe out loud in front of the council. Didn't say your name."

My stomach turned over. "She's fishing. Seeing who bites."

"Seeing who's scared enough of you to want you gone, more like."

We kept walking, and I didn't have anything to say to that, because she wasn't wrong.

Kieran sent me to the border market that afternoon with Sage as escort, mostly because Bettina needed supplies we couldn't grow this far north and mostly, I suspected, because he wanted me somewhere he could account for while the whispering settled down at home. I didn't argue. A few hours away from pack eyes sounded better than staying put.

The market sat right where Ashvale land met open trade ground, stalls packed close, smells of smoked meat and dried spice thick enough to taste. Traders came through from half a dozen packs out here, none of them wearing colors, everybody minding their own business by unspoken rule.

Sage haggled over a bundle of dried root while I wandered two stalls down, checking a jar of something Bettina had circled twice in her notes. That's when I saw her.

Petra. Standing near the edge of the market where the stalls thinned out, half-turned away like she didn't want to be noticed, talking low and fast to a man I didn't recognize.

I almost kept walking. I almost told myself it was nothing, that plenty of Ashvale wolves came through here to trade on their own time. Except something about the way she stood, shoulders tight, eyes flicking around the crowd every few seconds, that made me stop and actually look.

The man wasn't dressed like a trader. No goods on him, no cart, nothing to sell or buy. He stood too still, the way you stand when you're waiting for something specific instead of browsing.

And when the wind shifted, I caught it, faint, but there. He didn't smell like Ashvale. Didn't smell like any pack scent I recognized from the market crowd around him either. Something colder. Something that was wrong.

Petra reached into her coat and pulled out a folded scrap of paper.

I froze where I stood, half-hidden behind a stall of hanging herbs, watching her press it into his palm quickly and practiced, like she'd done it before and knew exactly how not to be seen doing it. He closed his fist around it without a word, tucked it away inside his jacket, and turned to disappear back into the crowd before I could get a clear look at his face.

Petra straightened, smoothed her coat down like nothing had happened, and turned to walk back toward the Ashvale stalls.

That's when she saw me.

Her whole body went still for half a second, just long enough that I knew she knew exactly what I just watched. Then the stillness melted into something easy, almost friendly, and she crossed the distance between us like we were old friends running into each other by chance.

"Fancy seeing you out here." Her voice was light, casual, nothing like the sharp edge she used on me in the herb stores. "Didn't take you for a market day kind of girl."

"Who was that?" I kept my voice even, refusing to give her the satisfaction of hearing it shake.

"Who was who?"

"The man. The note."

Petra's smile didn't move an inch. "You must be seeing things. Been under a lot of stress lately, hasn't it? The whole burning-people-back-to-life thing." She said it soft enough that nobody nearby could've heard it as anything but small talk. "Wouldn't blame you for imagining things that aren't there."

"I know what I saw."

"Do you?" She tilted her head, studying me the same way she had in the herb stores, weighing something behind her eyes. "Careful who you say that to, sweetheart. Accusations without proof have a way of making the accuser look worse than the accused."

She walked past me before I could answer, disappearing into the crowd toward the Ashvale stalls like she hadn't just handed a stranger something she clearly didn't want anyone to see.

I stood there with my heart hammering, staring at the spot where the man had vanished, trying to decide if I just watched something small or something that was about to blow everything apart.

  • Married Off as a Breeder, She Became His Only Mate.    Chapter 15

Briony's POVKieran came back near midnight, boots caked in mud from the border trail, jaw tight enough that I knew before he said a word that whatever he found out there hadn't settled anything."Well?" I stood up from the chair I'd been waiting in, too keyed up to have actually slept."Multiple sets of tracks. Days' worth, maybe longer." He dropped into the chair across from me, rubbing a hand over his face. "Whoever came through that window last night wasn't the first one scouting that stretch of wall. They've been watching us for a while.""And Halric? What did he say before you got pulled away?"Something shifted in his expression, careful now. "He wrote the treaty clause himself. Forty years back. Pushed the council to leave it open to any Thistlewood daughter instead of naming one specifically."My stomach dropped. "He knew. About the bloodline.""Suspected. That's the word he used." Kieran leaned forward, elbows on his knees. "Said he'd been watching your family for decades, w

Kieran's POVHalric led me to his own quarters instead of the war room, which told me something before he even opened his mouth. He shut the door behind us and checked the hallway twice through the gap before he trusted it closed."You're making me nervous," I said."Good." He didn't sit. Paced instead, hands clasped behind his back, an old habit I have seen him do maybe three times in my life, all of them before delivering news he didn't want to deliver. "Because what I'm about to tell you should've come out a long time ago, and I've spent years telling myself it didn't matter. Last night proved me wrong.""Then tell me."He stopped pacing and looked at me straight on. "The treaty clause. The one demanding a Thistlewood daughter for the binding. I wrote that wording myself, forty years back, when I sat on the council that first drafted it."That stopped me cold. "You never mentioned that.""Because it wasn't something I was proud of admitting." His jaw worked. "The clause wasn't pack

Briony's POVBy morning I had four guards instead of one, stationed at my door, my window, and both ends of the hallway, and I hated every single one of them on principle even though none of it was their fault."This is ridiculous," I said, watching a fifth wolf get added to the rotation outside the healing house. "I can't walk to the well without an escort now.""You can't walk anywhere without an escort now." Kieran didn't look up from the notes he was reading, spread out across the war room table like they might rearrange themselves into an answer if he stared long enough. "Not after last night.""I threw a fully grown man through a window with my bare hands. I think I can handle a walk to the well.""You barely stayed on your feet doing it." He finally looked up. "You told me yourself. It didn't feel like healing. You don't know what it costs you yet, and neither do I, and I'm not betting your life on a power neither of us understands against wolves who came here specifically to t

Briony's POVI lay frozen, staring at the window, listening to that scrape work its way slower and more careful than any wind or branch could manage. My heart was going so hard I could feel it in my ears. The latch gave with a soft click. The window slid open an inch, then wider, cold air pouring in around a shape pulling itself over the sill, black-clothed, face covered, moving with the kind of quiet that only comes from practice. I didn't think. I didn't have time to think. My body just reacted, rolling off the far side of the bed as his boots hit the floor."Where is she…" His voice cut off the second he spotted me crouched against the wall.He lunged.I threw my hands up, not to fight, just to stop him, some desperate animal instinct screaming got back away from me and the mark on my palm exploded to life so fast it lit the whole room gold. It wasn't gentle. It wasn't the warm pull I felt healing Faro. This was raw, ugly force, a wall of pressure slamming into him mid-lunge and th

Briony's POV"Whose scent is it?" I asked, my voice lower than I meant it to come out.Kieran straightened, still staring at the doorframe like it might give him more if he looked hard enough. "Not fresh. A few hours old, maybe more. Faint enough that if I hadn't been standing right here I would've missed it completely.""But you know whose it is."His jaw ticked. "I have a guess.""Petra.""I said a guess." He said it fast, like he wanted to hold off naming her out loud until he was sure, but I could see it in his face, he already knew. "Get inside. Bolt the door. I'll send someone to sit outside your window tonight.""I don't need a babysitter.""You need somebody who isn't asleep when the next note gets passed." He didn't wait for me to argue further, already moving down the hall, the tracker jogging to keep pace with him.I went inside like he told me to. I bolted the door like he told me to. I did not, however, plan on staying quiet about any of it, and the second I heard his boo

  • Married Off as a Breeder, She Became His Only Mate.     Chapter 10

Briony's POVI found Kieran in the war room going over patrol maps with two of his trackers, and I didn't wait for an invitation to interrupt."Petra passed a note to a man at the border market. He didn't smell like Ashvale. Didn't smell like anybody I've smelled before, actually."The trackers went still. Kieran's head came up slowly."Describe him.""Tall. Dark coat, no colors on him. Kept his face turned away from the crowd most of the time." I crossed my arms. "He took the note and disappeared before I could get a good look.""And Petra?""Told me I was imagining things. Then told me to be careful who I said that to."Kieran's jaw worked once. He turned to the older tracker, rattled off three names and a stretch of border to cover before nightfall, and the two men were gone within a minute, boots already moving down the hall."You should've come straight to me instead of confronting her," he said, once they were gone."I didn't confront her. She confronted me.""Same difference, i
