Chapter 3

Penulis: Mohini
I felt as though I'd been struck by lightning. After all, Grandpa and Grandma's field back home was the fruit of their lifelong and painstaking labor.

The moment Jared came back, I rushed over at once and demanded, "Did you just seal off my grandparents' field?"

Jared loosened his tie leisurely and leaned back against the couch, replying casually, "I'm just being fair to everyone.

"My parents have been subsidizing us with millions of dollars' worth of financial aid every year. By the same logic, your family ought to contribute something too.

"Once the field is leveled, we can build an outdoor children's playground there. It would be a good place for the baby to go to after she's born."

He spoke airily and casually, as though the destruction of that land were nothing but a trivial matter.

My voice trembled. "But that's my grandparents' whole life!"

He retorted, "And what, my parents' money just grows on trees or something? Marriage requires equal input from both parties. As the baby's great-grandparents, shouldn't they be showing some support for her?"

I dug my nails into my palms and gritted my teeth. "You have no right to touch their property."

Jared didn't say a word. He just dialed his lawyer's number and handed the phone to me.

The lawyer on the other end of the line spoke in a solemn yet professional tone. He said, "Mr. Dickson indeed holds the title deed to that piece of land. He also has every right to change the usage of the land."

Jared hung up and met my shocked gaze. "You've already forgotten that your grandparents signed over the rights to me, have you?"

It finally came back to me in a daze.

When marrying into the Dickson family, Grandpa and Grandma were worried that I would be looked down upon if I arrived empty-handed, so they transferred the title of their only valuable piece of land to Jared's name.

Back then, Jared had accepted the gesture with grateful tears. But now, he was bulldozing the field down and turning it into an outdoor playground instead.

I thought of the hard labor that Grandpa and Grandma poured into the field and felt my heart sink.

"Then, I'll just buy it back from you."

I then dug out the bank card I'd hidden inside my bag. It was the one containing all the money I'd painstakingly saved up over the years for Grandpa and Grandma's retirement. However, when I checked the bank balance, it was zero.

And Jared was the only one who knew the password for that account other than me.

I looked up in shock. "What did you do?"

He replied calmly, "I deducted all the money you owed me straight from your account. Otherwise, it would be hard for Selena to do the accounts for me."

It was only then that I noticed Selena sitting in the study, handling the paperwork while wearing my slippers and pajamas.

I clutched the lightweight card in my hands. Yet, it felt like a crushing weight upon my heart.

Just then, Grandpa and Grandma showed up, their bodies hunched over as they came up to me and grabbed my hand.

"Angela, there's no need for you to suffer or be mistreated for our sake. Come on, let's just go home together."

I nodded with a lump in my throat.

Jared suddenly strode up to us and blocked our path. He frowned deeply as he said, "Where do you think you're going?"

I looked up at him and said, "I'm divorcing you for good and going home with them."

Then, I took out the printed divorce agreement and handed it to him. I said calmly, "Sign this. I'll come back for it when I'm free."

The moment Jared took the document from me, his face turned as dark as thunder. He didn't say a word.

I just grabbed Grandpa's and Grandma's hands and said, "Let's go."

However, we hadn't even taken a few steps forward before we were stopped by three tall and burly bodyguards at the door. Jared's cold, ruthless voice rang out behind us.

"You want to divorce me? Sure. Then tell your grandfather to take off his clothes and return them to me. I was the one who bought it for him, wasn't it?"

"Angela!"Jared kept calling my name from the back, but I turned my back to him and walked away without another backward glance.…I did my best to avoid Jared in the time leading up to the court hearing. After all, he held a lot of power in Cornton, and I didn't want to be influenced by him in any way if I could help it.But to my great surprise, Selena was the one who came looking for me after that.As soon as I opened my door, she lunged at me like a madwoman."Angela Baxter! How dare you sue me!" she screamed hysterically. "Mr. Dickson's only just mad at me temporarily for now! He'll never ignore me in the end! You're the one who's done for!"As soon as the words were out of her mouth, I slapped her hard on the cheek. She held her cheek in shock, her jaw falling slack as she stared at me."You… How dare you hit me?"I looked at her extremely calmly and asked, "Why can't I hit you? "If it weren't for you purposely stirring up shit, Jared would never have forced Grandpa to

Angela's POVThe moment I got off the operating table, I dragged my frail body out of the hospital and left. The hospital was full of people whom Jared knew. He would be able to find me in an instant if I stayed, but I never wanted to see him again.I clutched the pocket watch, which was the only thing that Grandpa and Grandma had left me, feeling a knife stabbing into my heart. They had been my only family left in this world. But now, they were both gone. And it was all my fault for choosing to marry the man who would eventually kill them. After finding a safe place to stay, I contacted Pete to sue Jared and Selena."Mr. Ramos, I have the surveillance footage from that time to prove that Jared and Selena conspired to drive Grandpa to his death and scare Grandma to her death as well."Also, am I able to use this incident as grounds to file for divorce against Jared as well?"Pete replied, "Yes. If the evidence is solid, the court will most likely grant the divorce."…News of

Jared immediately felt as though he'd been struck by a thunderbolt."W-What did you just say?"He stumbled into the crematorium, but all he saw waiting for him were two urns on the table, with the names "Larry Baxter" and "Margaret Delaney" on them. Those were Angela's grandparents' names."How could this be…" Jared muttered. The crematorium staff sighed and said, "The old man died by suicide, and the old woman died from a sudden heart attack. They were rushed to the hospital but pronounced dead upon arrival."Jared staggered backward in disbelief.Larry and Margaret were Angela's only living family left. And yet, he had forced them to their deaths over just a mere outfit.Jared's vision flashed. He immediately tried calling Angela, but all he heard was just the mechanical female voice on the other end of the line."The number you have called is not available. Please try again later—"It wasn't until then that Jared finally realized Angela was gone."Why…"Jared brought the

Third-Person POV Jared stood frozen at the doorway. The sprawling manor was eerily lifeless, draped everywhere with black decorations."What the hell is going on here? What's this, a funeral or something?" Jared roared.Frida hurried over and stammered, "Mr. Dickson, Mrs. Dickson's grandparents both passed away in the manor. According to the rules, this is how the place should be decorated…""What?" Jared asked, his voice rising sharply. "How could they just die out of the blue?"Frida explained everything honestly to him, and Jared frowned harder and harder as he heard the rest of the story."Impossible," he said. "How could the old man have killed himself over his clothes? He's not a kid. "Where is Angela? I will question her myself."Frida shook her head and didn't say a word. Jared lost his patience with her and headed straight up the stairs."Angela Baxter! Your damn family is getting increasingly out of hand!" he roared. "First, you made a whole fuss demanding a divor

I stopped dead in my tracks and turned around to stare at Jared in disbelief."You're making an elderly man take off his clothes?"The manor's maids and bodyguards gathered around, looking on as though they were enjoying a show.Jared's eyes darted away for a moment before he cleared his throat and said, "You were the one who asked for a divorce. And since we're divorcing, all assets must be accounted for, starting with this outfit that your grandfather is wearing."The outfit Grandpa was wearing was a gift from Jared for his 80th birthday. It had cost him 30,000 dollars. And when Grandpa heard the price of the outfit, he immediately stored it away in the wardrobe and refused to wear it.He had only put it on today for the rare occasion of coming to the Dickson manor to bring me home.Grandpa got a shock and hid behind me. Although he didn't understand the Dickson family's so-called rules and regulations, he knew what Jared was trying to imply. He asked timidly, "How about… How
