Chapter 2

Penulis: Mohini
Jared was taken aback. However, his expression darkened almost immediately.

"Angela, I know that you're only spouting nonsense because of your pregnancy hormones. I will pretend I didn't hear what you just said.

"Get some rest. I asked the doctor to check on the baby's gender. We're going to the Dickson manor tomorrow for the gender reveal party."

As Jared left, he slammed the door so hard that it shook the walls in the room.

I swallowed the bile rising in my throat. Then, I called my lawyer, Pete Ramos.

"Help me draft a divorce agreement."

…

Early the next morning, I saw that Jared and Selena were already seated on the couch when I arrived at the Dickson manor with my heavily pregnant belly.

Selena stood up to greet me, smiling with practiced poise.

"I was working deep into the night last night, so I asked Mr. Dickson to keep me company. You don't mind, do you?"

I withdrew my hand and sat down in the seat farthest away from Jared.

He looked mighty displeased about it and looked like he wanted to say something about it, but he ultimately didn't.

As the matriarch of the family, Jared's mother, Karen Platt, personally accepted the gender test report from the doctor. Moments later, she announced to the rest of the family, "It's a girl."

At once, the rest of the female relatives began whispering among themselves. "And there I thought she was pregnant with the next Dickson heir—turns out it was just a girl after all."

"Hmph. And she thinks she can act so entitled even though she's just carrying a girl in her belly, demanding this and that and spending so lavishly like she thought money grew on trees. She was just trying to cash in on her baby. Serves her right for carrying a girl."

"Let's see how she's going to continue holding her head high in the family after this!"

Jared's face turned grim the moment he heard them.

"That baby is still my child even though she's a girl. And I will not have you gossiping about it."

The whispering and jeering ceased at once.

However, Karen walked up to me with a look of displeasure and disapproval on her face.

"Since this child cannot inherit the Dickson family business, you will have to pay back all the expenses we've spent on you so far. After all, the cost of upbringing for a girl differs completely from that of a boy. It was clearly written in the agreement."

I clenched my fists as a dull ache spread through my chest.

"Boys and girls are both the same to me."

Jared gave me a dark, pointed look. "Watch your attitude," he said in an irritated tone. "Rules are rules. You will be paying back every single expense incurred without a penny to spare!"

Then, he told Selena to bring over the itemized bill for the past seven months of my pregnancy. It also included the non-refundable postpartum nanny fees, expensive nutritional supplements, and the past seven monthly prenatal check-ups.

Selena flashed a practiced, professional smile and said, "Don't mind me for saying this, but women really ought to be independent and work for their own income. Relying solely on a man to provide for you will only make them despise you sooner or later."

Then, she showed me the bill total.

"The total comes to 308,000 dollars, Ms. Baxter. We accept cash and card, but no credit."

I was made to pay back everything just because I was pregnant with a girl. It was utterly absurd.

When Jared saw that I wasn't moving a muscle, he frowned hard and said, "You're not going to be able to worm yourself out of this bill. The agreement and gender test were both notarized by lawyers. You only have your own womb to blame for failing to give me a male heir."

Back when he found out that I was pregnant, he had wept with joy and excitement and acted like a flustered young man. But now, just because it turned out to be a girl, his attitude underwent a 180-degree turn at the snap of a finger.

The other people began murmuring amongst themselves, piercing into my ears. The baby seemed to have sensed my distress and kicked me hard in the womb, sending a sharp pang through the rest of my body.

I steadied myself against the wall, nearly collapsing to the floor.

Jared instinctively reached out to support me, but his attention was snatched away by Selena's sudden scream.

"Mr. Dickson! My dad is having a heart attack! He needs a huge fund at once to save his life… I need to go and get the money to save him…"

Jared immediately grabbed his coat and said, "I'll come with you. You can use my card for his bill."

I was drenched in cold sweat from the pain and tried to call out to the other people around me for help. However, Karen didn't even spare me a glance and instead led the other people away.

I only managed to slowly recover with the family doctor's help.

Just as I was about to hail a cab back to my grandparents' house, I received a frantic call from Grandpa.

"Angela! Our field back home has been sealed off! All of our crops have also been smashed and destroyed!"

"Angela!"Jared kept calling my name from the back, but I turned my back to him and walked away without another backward glance.…I did my best to avoid Jared in the time leading up to the court hearing. After all, he held a lot of power in Cornton, and I didn't want to be influenced by him in any way if I could help it.But to my great surprise, Selena was the one who came looking for me after that.As soon as I opened my door, she lunged at me like a madwoman."Angela Baxter! How dare you sue me!" she screamed hysterically. "Mr. Dickson's only just mad at me temporarily for now! He'll never ignore me in the end! You're the one who's done for!"As soon as the words were out of her mouth, I slapped her hard on the cheek. She held her cheek in shock, her jaw falling slack as she stared at me."You… How dare you hit me?"I looked at her extremely calmly and asked, "Why can't I hit you? "If it weren't for you purposely stirring up shit, Jared would never have forced Grandpa to

Angela's POVThe moment I got off the operating table, I dragged my frail body out of the hospital and left. The hospital was full of people whom Jared knew. He would be able to find me in an instant if I stayed, but I never wanted to see him again.I clutched the pocket watch, which was the only thing that Grandpa and Grandma had left me, feeling a knife stabbing into my heart. They had been my only family left in this world. But now, they were both gone. And it was all my fault for choosing to marry the man who would eventually kill them. After finding a safe place to stay, I contacted Pete to sue Jared and Selena."Mr. Ramos, I have the surveillance footage from that time to prove that Jared and Selena conspired to drive Grandpa to his death and scare Grandma to her death as well."Also, am I able to use this incident as grounds to file for divorce against Jared as well?"Pete replied, "Yes. If the evidence is solid, the court will most likely grant the divorce."…News of

Jared immediately felt as though he'd been struck by a thunderbolt."W-What did you just say?"He stumbled into the crematorium, but all he saw waiting for him were two urns on the table, with the names "Larry Baxter" and "Margaret Delaney" on them. Those were Angela's grandparents' names."How could this be…" Jared muttered. The crematorium staff sighed and said, "The old man died by suicide, and the old woman died from a sudden heart attack. They were rushed to the hospital but pronounced dead upon arrival."Jared staggered backward in disbelief.Larry and Margaret were Angela's only living family left. And yet, he had forced them to their deaths over just a mere outfit.Jared's vision flashed. He immediately tried calling Angela, but all he heard was just the mechanical female voice on the other end of the line."The number you have called is not available. Please try again later—"It wasn't until then that Jared finally realized Angela was gone."Why…"Jared brought the

Third-Person POV Jared stood frozen at the doorway. The sprawling manor was eerily lifeless, draped everywhere with black decorations."What the hell is going on here? What's this, a funeral or something?" Jared roared.Frida hurried over and stammered, "Mr. Dickson, Mrs. Dickson's grandparents both passed away in the manor. According to the rules, this is how the place should be decorated…""What?" Jared asked, his voice rising sharply. "How could they just die out of the blue?"Frida explained everything honestly to him, and Jared frowned harder and harder as he heard the rest of the story."Impossible," he said. "How could the old man have killed himself over his clothes? He's not a kid. "Where is Angela? I will question her myself."Frida shook her head and didn't say a word. Jared lost his patience with her and headed straight up the stairs."Angela Baxter! Your damn family is getting increasingly out of hand!" he roared. "First, you made a whole fuss demanding a divor

I stopped dead in my tracks and turned around to stare at Jared in disbelief."You're making an elderly man take off his clothes?"The manor's maids and bodyguards gathered around, looking on as though they were enjoying a show.Jared's eyes darted away for a moment before he cleared his throat and said, "You were the one who asked for a divorce. And since we're divorcing, all assets must be accounted for, starting with this outfit that your grandfather is wearing."The outfit Grandpa was wearing was a gift from Jared for his 80th birthday. It had cost him 30,000 dollars. And when Grandpa heard the price of the outfit, he immediately stored it away in the wardrobe and refused to wear it.He had only put it on today for the rare occasion of coming to the Dickson manor to bring me home.Grandpa got a shock and hid behind me. Although he didn't understand the Dickson family's so-called rules and regulations, he knew what Jared was trying to imply. He asked timidly, "How about… How

I felt as though I'd been struck by lightning. After all, Grandpa and Grandma's field back home was the fruit of their lifelong and painstaking labor. The moment Jared came back, I rushed over at once and demanded, "Did you just seal off my grandparents' field?"Jared loosened his tie leisurely and leaned back against the couch, replying casually, "I'm just being fair to everyone."My parents have been subsidizing us with millions of dollars' worth of financial aid every year. By the same logic, your family ought to contribute something too."Once the field is leveled, we can build an outdoor children's playground there. It would be a good place for the baby to go to after she's born."He spoke airily and casually, as though the destruction of that land were nothing but a trivial matter. My voice trembled. "But that's my grandparents' whole life!"He retorted, "And what, my parents' money just grows on trees or something? Marriage requires equal input from both parties. As the b
