I was still sitting with Cassius's words circling my mind, it can't be, when a knock cut through the silence, sharp and formal, nothing like comfort.

"Helena." Damian's voice came in through the door, controlled and distant. "I need to talk to you for a moment."

"Come in," I said, pulling the borrowed robe tighter around myself.

He stepped inside and shut the door behind him with the same careful precision he seemed to bring to everything, still in his suit, though the tie had been loosened, the only sign that tonight had cost him anything at all.

"My father's behavior tonight," he said, without preamble, "was inappropriate, and I won't pretend otherwise. I wanted you to hear that from me directly."

"Then he looked at my scar like he'd seen a ghost."

"I noticed." His jaw was tight, gray eyes giving away nothing. "Whatever he thought he recognized, he did not explain it."

"And I do not have an answer for you yet," he continued.

"Do you have a guess?" I asked.

"I don't deal in guesses." He responded flatly, though something in the way his eyes held mine a beat too long told me the answer was not as simple as he wanted it to sound. "I deal in facts, and right now I have none worth giving you."

"That's not very comforting for a wedding night."

Something almost like the ghost of amusement passed over his face before it vanished. "I never promised comfort. Only protection, for as long as you're under this roof."

The room felt smaller than it had a moment ago. I did not move, and neither did he, the space between us charged with something neither of us seemed willing to name, the same current that had passed between us in the dark by the water before six men had torn the night apart.

"Why does it matter to you," I asked quietly, "what he thinks he saw?"

"Because my father does not react to anything less important and without a reason," Damian said, his voice lower now. "And I would rather understand what unsettled him before it becomes a problem I can't control."

"Am I a problem to control?" I asked.

His gray eyes flickered, something sharp and unreadable moving behind them. "You're my wife," he said, like the word itself was still strange in his mouth. "So whatever you are, it's mine to manage now."

The coldness in it should have stung more than it did. Instead, I found myself watching his jaw, the tension in his shoulders, wondering how a man built entirely out of walls could still make my pulse climb just by standing three feet away and saying nothing warm at all.

Then a brisk knock rattled on the door before either of us could say anything else.

"If you two are done being tragic in there," a voice called through the wooden door, "some of us would like to actually meet the bride before midnight."

Damian's jaw tightened, though something almost like reluctant fondness moved behind his eyes. "My brother," he said, already stepping back and putting distance between us that felt deliberate.

The door swung open, and a young man strolled in like he owned the room, messy dark blond hair, an easy grin, a scar cutting through one eyebrow that only made his face more striking. Behind him were two other men, one tall and quiet with dark, watchful eyes that swept the room and landed on me like he was trying to read every detail about me at once, the other sharp-dressed and smiling, twirling a pen between his fingers like it was an extension of his hand.

"Kade," the blond one said, offering a hand I shook on reflex. "Damian's much better-looking brother, in case nobody has told you yet."

"Nobody has told me anything," I said honestly, and it surprised a real laugh out of him.

"Fair, this family is terrible at introductions." He nodded to the quiet one first. "Ryder, our War General. And Xavier, resident genius and professional smart mouth."

"Pleasure," Xavier said smoothly, though his eyes lingered on me a beat too long, calculating something I had not yet permitted him to work out.

Ryder said nothing at all. He simply looked at me, dark eyes steady, and something about his stillness made the back of my neck prickle, not exactly with fear, but with the certain, unsettling feeling that he was searching for something specific in my face and had not yet decided whether he had found it.

"It's very rare for all four of us to be in the same room," Kade said, oblivious to the tension humming just beneath the pleasantries. "Guess that's what a wedding does."

"Rare, and apparently significant," Xavier murmured, still watching me. "Don't you feel that?"

"Feel what?" I asked.

His easy smile did not waver, but something behind his eyes sharpened, the same way Cassius's had right before he touched my scar. "Nothing," he said, and I hated how much that single word scared me the second time I heard it tonight.

Across the room, Ryder had gone very still, his gaze fixed somewhere just past my shoulder, and when I turned to see what had caught his attention, there was nothing there at all. His jaw was tight, his breathing careful and controlled, the exact way a person breathes when they are trying not to let something show.

"Ryder," Damian said in a low voice, watching his War General with open concern. "What is it?"

Ryder blinked, and whatever had gripped him released just as suddenly, leaving only careful blankness behind. "Nothing," he said, his voice rougher than before. "Just a scent I didn't expect."

He turned and walked out without saying another word, and I stood there in a room gone silent, watching the door swing shut behind him, with the cold, growing certainty that in this house full of strangers, I had just watched a second man come dangerously close to recognising something about me that even I did not understand yet.

Ryder took the first watch outside my door, exactly as Damian had promised, and by the third night of it, I had stopped feeling strange about finding him there each time I woke, a steady, quiet presence that made the house feel less like it was holding its breath around me."You don't have to keep doing this," I told him one morning, after I found him still awake despite the early hour, with an unread book opened mostly on his lap."I know." He said, closing the book, unbothered. "But I would rather be here than sleeping and wondering if I made the wrong choice."I sat down across from him, restless in a way I could not quite name. "Ryder, I need to go see Felix."Immediately, something careful crossed his expression. "Why now?""Because he promised me answers, the night his own pack turned on him," I said. "Weeks ago, he said he would tell me everything once we were somewhere safer than his own bedroom. So I let it go because there was always something else happening. And there isn't

When I arrived, I met Cassius waiting in his private study, with the door already open, and no guards stationed outside the way there usually were. His composure was intact, as it always was, though something behind his eyes sat heavier than I had ever seen from him before."Close the door," he said quietly. And I did, with my heart pounding, unsure of what to expect after everything Ryder had refused to explain on the way here."Sit, please," he said.So I sat across from him, waiting, and for a long moment he said nothing at all, choosing his words with the same careful precision he usually brought to every council session."I am not going to tell you what you want to hear," he finally said. "And I want to be clear about that before I say anything else. I do not have proof of anything. But I have a suspicion, both old and unresolved, that I have carried far too long.""Then why did you call me here?" I asked."Because of what I saw in the garden this morning," he said. "The symbol,

Not long after the garden carving was found, Cassius arrived after being summoned from wherever he had been that morning, and the moment he saw it, something in his composed expression tightened, like old fear surfacing plainly and unguarded for just a heartbeat before he smoothed it carefully away again."You recognize this," I said quietly, watching him."I have seen symbols like it," he said, too fast and too practiced. "Though it is not uncommon among old bloodlines, it could mean any number of things.""But that is not what your face said a moment ago.""You should be careful," he said, his voice sharpening, "about deciding what an old man's face means before he has explained it himself."Then he turned to Damian instead, closing the subject as firmly as shutting a door. "Double the perimeter watch, and I want a full report on every hire this household has made in the last year, both staff and contractors.""Father," Damian's voice carried an edge of frustration. "If you know som

I opened the door to find Ryder already dressed, with tension written plainly all over his face, and I did not bother asking questions before following him downstairs through the quiet halls toward the east side of the estate."What happened?" I finally asked, once we were far enough away from Kayla's room, making sure that she could not overhear us."A guard found something during the early rotation," Ryder said. "Near the garden wall, and I want you to see it before word spreads out through the household."We arrived at the garden as the sun was still climbing, pale light stretching long shadows across the grass, and Ryder led me toward the far wall where two guards stood watch over something on the ground.Turned out to be the same symbol which I had come to dread, carved into the soft earth, deep enough that no wind or rain had disturbed it overnight, with a crescent moon wrapped in thorned vines, and this one is larger than any of the ones I had seen before, easily three feet acr

Three nights later, I found myself back in the small, dusty study, in the same one where I had first found the shipping ledger, being unable to stay away any longer despite everything else pressing on my mind. This time, the house was fully asleep, with no footsteps in the hall, and there was no careful voice catching me at the door.I checked through what remained of the shelves methodically, my hands steadier now than they had been the first time I had done this. It took me months of practice to get exactly what to look for and what to ignore. That night, I found nothing new. And eventually, I sat back on my heels, frustrated, and let myself think, really thinking, about everything that had brought me to this exact spot.Silver Moon, A pack burned to nothing eighteen years ago. A shipping consignment that left Kingston territory two nights before the fire. A Kingston name on an old Ashwood guest list from the same week.Though none of it was proof, not on its own, but stacked togeth

I gripped Damian's hand tightly without meaning to, as the stirring in my chest started growing stronger with every second as the moon climbed higher, my whole body suddenly humming with something I had no name for."You're trembling," Damian said, quietly close to my ear. "If it is too much? We can go back in.""No, I don't want to go," I whispered. "I feel like something is happening to me which I do not understand."Then I looked around us and saw that pack members were beginning to shift, with their clothes discarding quickly and without ceremony, wolves of every color bounding toward the open stretch of rooftop set aside for running, laughter and howls mixing altogether in the warm night air.Kayla stood beside me, watching with open wonder, and Kade had already stripped down and shifted into a sandy colored wolf, nudging playfully at Xavier's leg before he could finish removing his jacket.I did not notice the light on my body at first. It was Damian's sharp intake of breath th
