Suzanne's pov:
I woke up that morning, exhausted from yesterday's work but fully determined to do better today. My eyes darted across the room and it looked different. I didn't see Tavons belongings, but he had slept next to me last night, even if I didn't let him touch me. That scumbag!!! Only lord knew where his dick had been. I stood up and checked the wardrobe but his clothes were absent. Then it dawned on me that he had finally abandoned us. I and Kai were now all that we had. My heart broke into countless pieces, but then my phone dinged and I picked it up. I saw pictures of Tavon and another woman. Her face was unrevealing but her physique looked so hot. The caption said: “Tavon and his newfound love” I didn't want to but my fingers mistakenly swiped up and I saw another one. “Tavon and his new love on a holiday” then a video of Tavon saying she gave him everything he needed to be a man. My heart broke more and more as I read this. The room suddenly became so lonely and too small. I fell on my knees and wanted to scream but covered my mouth when Kai moved on his bed and made sounds. I walked towards him to make sure he was okay. My five-year-old boy was deeply asleep so I heaved a sigh of relief. At least my son is okay, what would I have done if he weren't? I walked back to prepare breakfast and packed his lunch bag. I still had a job that paid me, I could save up and use that to get a smaller apartment since Tavon had left. A surge of determination enveloped my being and I made everything ready for me and Kai for the day. I did my best to get Kai to school and began heading to work. As I approached the entrance to the saloon, the property owner was standing in front of the shop, ordering boys to pack my things out. “What are you doing sir?” I questioned, stopping one of the boys from carrying my hair steamer. “Why are you doing this sir? I have told you I will pay you by the month's end.” “Take your hands off me, Suzanne,” he walked away from me. My heart ached, why was all this happening to me? “I have given you plenty of time Suzanne, I cannot continue to lose money.” he waved his hand with his backwoods in his hand smoking and walking away from me. When we arrived at his car I held his hand, “Please sir, I don't have any other source of income and my husband just abandoned me and Kai, don't do this.” But he only shook his head, dipped his hand in his pocket and gave me $500. I took the money without wasting a second because I needed it. However, this only meant one thing, he wasn't going to change his mind even if he liked me. I nodded to him after taking the money and turned around. ‘Where do I go from here, how does my new life begin with $500 and $350 in my account.’ As I headed home, I felt dizzy, I tried not to cry in public. But the more I tried the harder it became. Then, a call came in. “Hello, are you Suzanne? Kai's mom?” the voice asked. “Yes, I am. And you are?” I responded. “No time to explain ma'am, meet me at the NYC Health hospital as soon as possible.” I gasped, but I quickly used my hands to cover my wide-open mouth. I smartly took a cap to the hospital. On getting there, Stella, my best friend, was already there and she was panicking. “What is wrong, Stella?” I asked with a frigid voice. “It's Kai. He… the Doctor said…” I pushed her aside and ran into the emergency unit to find my son on oxygen. I wanted to get into the room but the doctor and Stella held me back. “What has happened to my son?” I cried. “Calm down ma'am. This is a public place, let us speak in my office.” I looked into the doctor's eyes and I couldn't read how deep the situation really was. This made me more frightened, but I composed myself and followed him to his office. “Sit down ma'am,” the doctor offered and took his seat after shutting the door, meanwhile Stella waited outside. “Maam, your son has been diagnosed with cirrhosis.” my eyes popped and I stilt. “What?” came out of my mouth, my heart thumping loud. “We have good surgeons that can help your son, but…” From here on all he said was echoing in my ear, my vision became blurry and all I could hear was my heartbeat. “Madam, can you hear me?” he yelled. “I'm sorry sir, what were you saying?” I asked pleadingly, joining both hands. “I said we need a sum of two million dollars for the surgery to be carried out. I will also suggest that the earlier you clear the bill the better, to save your son.” “I understand sir,” I said weakly. At this junction, I was frustrated and weak. Who would save me from this mess? This is my pride and joy we are talking about, the only one who has made me smile all through my marriage with Tavon, my son. My thoughts grew wild and my frustration increased as I walked to the reception to sit. I needed to find the momentum to digest the reality of my current situation and find a way to save my son. I was not going to lose him. Just then I heard Stella call my name; “Suzanne, I have been looking for you. I was waiting in the other waiting room, what did the doctor say? Will my godson be okay?” I looked at her and with all her questions I could tell she saw the sadness in my eyes. “I need two million dollars for Kai's liver transplant.” she gasped and her mouth flew open. I nodded slightly with the little strength I had. Stella sat in silence for a while looking at an open space. I guess the news also broke her, she loves Kai so much and they were fond of each other. “Suzanne, what do you think we should do? How do we track down Tavon and ask him for help?” she asked in a low tone, speaking very close to my ear. I shook my head in a ‘No’ kind of way. I knew I wouldn't find Tavon. Besides, he didn't care when he was here, why would he care now? “I think I have an idea.” my body automatically directed itself to face Stella immediately. “What are you thinking about?” I blinked a couple of times in anticipation of her idea. I sure needed saving! She picked up her phone and dialled a number. “Hey D,” she said. I wondered who she was talking to but I hope it helped me. “I'm good. Quick one, about that information you gave me earlier, although it doesn't concern me, I have a damsel in distress that would fit that role perfectly.” After she said this, my thoughts became more wild, my eyes lingering in the waiting room. Who is she referring to as a damsel in distress? “Alright D, thank you for doing this for me, I will be waiting for the address, bye…” she concluded and ended the call. Turning to me who was staring at her and waiting for answers. “And?” I asked while she was looking at me and smiling. “Okay, so I just found a way to clear Kai's bills but you are going to be taking a huge step.” she paused. My heart raced faster, I had been bombarded with one bad news to another today, what was Stella going to say now? “You will be getting married to a Billionaire.” my brows furrowed, she sure sounded out of this world, but was she serious?Dominic’s pov:After greeting my mom we all settled down. Suzanne sat beside me, radiant in the glow of the evening, effortlessly beautiful, effortlessly herself. But something tugged at my attention. My mother. She was watching Suzanne—not in disapproval, not with judgment, but with a quiet, measured gaze.Suzanne must’ve caught it too, because she shifted slightly, pretending not to see, keeping her expression neutral.I made a mental note of it.Then I stood. And slowly, the room quieted.“I’d like to propose a toast.”Glasses lifted, murmurs softened.I turned to Suzanne, catching the flicker of surprise in her eyes.I took a breath.“To the woman who has stood beside me, even when I didn’t deserve it. To the woman who saw past every lie, every mistake, every wall I built to keep her out—and chose to stay anyway.”A hush settled deeper.“Suzanne, I’ve hurt you. I’ve failed you. I lied to you, convinced myself that business could replace love, that power could replace family. But
Dominic’s pov:Desmond stood by the mirror, buttoning his cufflinks with the efficiency of a man who never let emotion delay a tailored suit.Meanwhile, I was on my knees in front of Kai, trying to wrestle a bow tie around a very uncooperative five-year-old who had no intention of keeping still.“Kai,” I said, trying not to laugh, “hold still or I’ll wrap this thing around your forehead and call it fashion.”He grinned up at me, then tilted his chin with exaggerated seriousness.“Do I look like a CEO’s son?”Desmond chuckled without looking up. “You look like a CEO who’s about to fire someone for not bringing gummy bears to the meeting.”Kai gasped. “That’s a real reason to fire someone, Uncle Dez.”I finally straightened his collar and stood, smoothing down his blazer. He looked sharp. Miniature, but sharp. Then he asked, casually, like he hadn’t been holding the question in his chest all-day— “Is Grandma coming?”I paused for just a second, then smiled.“Of course she is.”His whol
Suzanne’s pov:The conference room smelled like fresh flowers and overpriced candles. There were charts taped to the glass walls, colour palettes scattered across the table, silverware samples, menu cards, and a PowerPoint presentation open on the big screen. Yes, a whole ass presentation. At the centre of the storm?Rachael was In full event general mode.Stella lounged on one side of the table flipping through photos of floral centrepieces, casually sipping from a champagne flute like this was a bridal launch party and not a last-minute family dinner.I sat at the head of the table, barefoot, hair in a messy bun, eyeing the madness unfolding before me with something between awe and disbelief."I thought this was supposed to be a small family dinner," I muttered, blinking at a three-tiered cake sketch that definitely wasn’t part of the original plan. "I’m tired."Rachael didn’t even look up. "Darling, it is a family dinner."She clicked through to the next slide in her presentation:
Suzanne’s pov:I had barely settled in, still letting the warmth of the welcome home surprise sink in, when Kai came bursting into the room like a little firecracker."Mom! Aunty Stella! Come quick! You have to see what Grandma got me!"He tugged at my hand with both of his m Loy eyes wide with excitement, practically vibrating with joy.Stella laughed, already rising to her feet. "Okay, okay, lead the way, Captain Kai!"I smiled, letting him pull me through the hallway, his tiny feet racing ahead. The moment we stepped into his room, my jaw dropped slightly. It was packed.Shelves lined with toys still in their glossy packaging. A miniature car. A rocket ship that actually made sounds. Plushies, board games, puzzles, gadgets I didn’t even recognize.I turned slowly, overwhelmed. "Wow… she really went all out."Kai grinned like he owned the entire world. "She said I deserved everything, Mommy." I haven’t even shown you the flying dragon one!"His room was a wonderland.Toys lined eve
Dominic’s pov:I stood with my arms crossed, my jaw tight as I watched the doctor review the test results.Every second felt heavier, like the weight of everything was pressing harder against my chest.Suzanne sat beside me, calmer than I was, her hands resting gently on her stomach like she already knew everything was fine.I wished I had that certainty. The doctor glanced up, offering a small nod. "The tests are all clear. Suzanne and the baby are healthy."Relief hit me fast, but I didn’t exhale yet. Then he turned the monitor toward us."We also did a scan. Would you like to see it?"Suzanne smiled softly, nodding.I stiffened, I wasn’t sure I was ready, Then the screen lit up.And there it was.Tiny, Fragile, Ours.Something in my chest tightened, an unfamiliar wave of emotion rushing through me.I blinked, swallowing hard, barely hearing Suzanne’s soft laughter beside me."Dominic, are you tearing up again?"I scoffed, shaking my head slightly, and forcing a smirk. "You’re imagi
Suzanne’s pov:The rhythmic beeping of the machines reminded me I was still in the hospital. Why do I have a lot of machines when I feel okay, I thought? I blinked slowly, stretching just enough to shake off the stiffness in my muscles. Then I felt movement. Across the room, Dominic was there. While sleeping, I could not remember the events of the previous night; I did not even hear him come in last night. He had slumped onto the couch, one arm over his eyes, as if blocking out everything else. Even now, he looked tense, like rest didn’t come naturally to him.I watched him for a moment, something twisting in my chest. Then yesterday’s conversation with Racheal surfaced. Her words echoed in my mind."Dominic has changed. You made him change."I swallowed hard, letting the memories hit all at once.I remember how it all started. The contract marriage. The deal felt so cold and calculated, It was as if impossible to turn it into something real.Yet here we were.He had stayed.Through
