LAURA'S POV

I can’t stop pacing.

I’ve called Montero five times now and he still hasn’t called back. I sent him a voice note three minutes ago, that's the kind of thing that’s supposed to grab his attention, but still....nothing.

Liam left earlier to retrieve the ledger from the bank. He said he used to keep it here at the house until that lunatic broke in and threatened everything. Now it’s locked away in a high-security vault and for some reason, that makes me more nervous.

What if he can't get it out? What if the vault's been broken into?

I grab a bottle of vodka from the counter and twist off the cap without hesitation. I don't even wince as I tilt it and gulp it down in three hard swallows. I’m too worried for that.

I'm still walking up and down the kitchen when the phone rings. I snatch it like I’ve been waiting my whole life for the sound. It’s a private number. Of course it is.
