A throbbing pain split through my head, and my heels ached like crazy as I slumped onto my revolving chair, kicking away my stilettos. I just sealed a multi-billion dollar deal for my husband's company and I couldn't feel more proud of myself.
“Woohoo,” I squeaked and let out a tired yawn.
Just as I was about to reach for a bottle of water, a loud ringing noise split across my office.
“Mrs Chadwick on the line,” I yawned into the receiver immediately as I picked the call.
“Ma'am your attention is urgently needed in Baskville hospital, your sister is in labour,” the voice spoke with urgency and before I could say another word, the line went dead.
“Fuck!” I muttered as I began scrambling around for my shoes.
Fixing my dress, I ran out of the office and into my car, whilst ignoring the stare I got from passers by. My sister is my only family and right now she's my priority. I drove in a blur to Baskville hospital, my heartbeat thumping in my chest.
“I'm…I'm here to see Laura Stone,” I said breathlessly.
The nurses exchanged weird glances and turned back to me.
“There's no Laura Stone in our records, ma'am,” one of the nurses said.
“What do you mean?” I asked, furrowing my brows. “I just received a call from this hospital that my sister is in labour!”
“Well, ma'am, the only Laura admitted in the maternity ward goes by the name Laura Chadwick,” the nurse asserted. “And her husband just came in a few hours ago.”
I was taken aback. Why would Laura register her name with my husband's surname? My mind was too tired to fix the puzzle, so I asked the nurse, “Which ward is she in?”
“VIP ward 631 wing A.”
Another surprise. How did Laura afford a VIP ward in Baskville hospital? She'd told me that her pregnancy was the result of a one-night stand and she doesn't know the father of the child.
Shaking off the haunting questions, I stepped out of the elevator and walked into the hallway. Excitedly, I threw the door to the ward open, a wide smile spread across my face, but what I saw next caused blood to drain from my face. My husband, Liam, was cradling my sister's newborn baby in his arms, whilst staring at my sister in the most affectionate way.
“Li…Liam, what are you doing here?” I asked in surprise.
“What am I doing here?” Liam scoffed. “Your sister just put to bed and I'm here to support her. Is that so much of a big deal?”
The usual warmth in Liam's eyes has changed into something cold and distant.
“You said you were on a business trip in Mauritius. Why'd you lie to me, Liam?”
“Neriah, can you stop being dramatic? Stop causing a scene and let me have a father-and-son moment,” Liam snapped.
“What?” I gasped and turned to Laura's direction.
Laura had a defiant look on her face as she tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ears.
“Laura, why did you register your name with my husband's surname?” I asked, hoping to confirm that I heard Liam wrong.
“Well, because he is the father of my child,” Laura retorted.
“You…you said you had a one night stand with a stranger and you don't know who the father of the baby is,” I rambled on. I was being delusional, but I just didn't want to accept the truth staring me in the face.
Suddenly, it all began to make sense, the endless business trips that Liam talked about. He wasn't travelling, he was instead, having an affair with my younger sister and this child was the result of their sexual escapades.
My breath hitched in my throat. Tears stung at the back of my eyes and a searing pain slashed through my heart. I felt my knees give way as I stumbled backwards, holding the edge of the hospital bed for support.
“Liam, why…what did I do wrong?” I inquired as tears choked my words.
Liam heaved a sigh and rolled his eyes in disgust. “You still don't get it do you? Neriah you're barren and can't have children. I need a child to continue the Chadwick legacy and your sister offered to help, you should be grateful to your sister instead of throwing accusations in the air.”
“Offered to help?” I scoffed and turned to Laura. “So you seduced my husband, after all I've done for you, Laura.”
“Oh come on,” Laura fired back. “It’s not my fault that you can't have children. Quit playing saint and accept reality, Neriah. Who knows, you might even be the child's godmother.”
Liam let out a small laugh and patted Laura's head. “That's so thoughtful of you, Laura.”
“And you, Neriah, why don't you go home and prepare some chicken broth for Laura. She's tired from childbirth and would need some food,” Liam said.
Tears slipped from the side of my eyes as I staggered out of the ward, ignoring their excited giggles. Ten years of my life had been a lie and the two people I loved the most in the world, had been the hand behind the knife that stabbed me in the chest.
DENVER'S POV I've never seen her this frightened. Color drains from her cheeks leaving only pale, white skin. "I... I can't do that."My arm feels like a thousand bees are stinging on it at the same time. The pain's weighing down on my entire body and I'm starting to feel like I'm drifting away from this world, but the only thing keeping me hanging on to my consciousness is this pretty pale face staring back at me. "Yes, you can. Grab some towels, I'll show you what to do" She hesitates for a second before hurrying over to a cupboard to grab some white towels. I'm sorry, they'll all be ruined by the time we're done. She hands them over. Her hands are trembling, I can imagine how she must feel with the trauma of the kidnap fresh in her mind. "How did you get kidnapped? Do you know any of those maniacs?" I want to keep her mind busy so she doesn't duel on the fact that she's ripping through flesh. "I don't know them personally. My neighbor used to work for them."My brow quirks,
NERIAH'S POV I never expected Denver to charge down here to rescue me like a knight in shining armor. Now he's been shot. "Shit. Shit." He throws the backpack in his hand down, pushing me to crouch on the ground beside him. "Stay down." It's an order. "I can carry the back pack. We have to keep moving." I whisper only to his hearing. It doesn't look like he heard me at all because he transfers the backpack to his other arm and grabs one of my hands. "Let's get moving." I know that mad man called The king of America is somewhere behind us. If we can't find a way to leave this place before he finds us then we're dead meat. Denver's pace has reduced drastically and every minute or so, he groans silently. I don't know what it's like to be shot so I don't understand how he's feeling. I just know he's losing a lot of blood and he must be in serious pain. "Shhh..." Denver stills beside me. I can hear nothing else but the ragged sound of his breathing and the call and response of crick
DENVER'S POV I was right. Neriah's been fucking kidnapped. Our jet just landed at Florida but since Gia's connect at the secret service traced the call to the middle of nowhere, I have to go. "You need to report this to the police. It doesn't make sense for you to go up against kidnappers all by yourself...." Gia was ranting while I was packing up some weapons. "Who said anything about going up against them alone?" I growled at her. "Can you go to bed? It's quite late. I'll call you when I have her back." "Denver! Is there something else going on here that I don't know about?" I raise a brow at her as I tuck a Glock into the waistband of my denim. "What're you talking about?" She walks up to me and looks directly into my eyes. "Let me be more specific..." "By all means...." "Are you in love with Neriah?" My hands still on the pen knife I'd grabbed from my weaponry. Suddenly everything in the room was too loud. The tick-tock of the clock on the wall, the sound of cars
NERIAH'S POV "Our father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom is forever..." I'm too sure I know that psalm, I don't know why it's not coming together in my head right now. My mind's beem doing frantic readings of 'Hail Mary's' and the book of psalms since I've been in motion for what seemed like forever. I'd come to consciousness about thirty minutes ago. The entire vehicle is quiet except for the roaring of the engine in my ears and the occasional grunt of a man beside me as we ran into potholes. None of the men who'd picked me up we're speaking so I didn't hear or know anything that could give away where I was. The only thing I know right now is that I'm in the hands of the king of America. If anything happens to me here I wonder who'd attempt looking for me. Eden? Ethan? Myles, Denver? My lips upturn in a frown as the car halts to a stop. The men suddenly begin to converse in what I believe to be Italian. I can hear the sliding door of the SUV ride open
DENVER'S POV My brother's a fucking bastard. My hands are fisted at my side, teeth clenched in my jaw. He definitely knows more, and for him to call for an audience with me, he's stuck. I just need to figure out where he's at and move on from there. Gia's perfume waltzed into the room before her. She's been packing our bags so we can leave this fucking city. "We're all set." She calls out. I reply with a simple nod, turning around and walking past her. "Denver..." I pause, "We don't have to get back to Florida tonight. We can leave in the morning."I shake my head. Neriah's not called back since after the meeting with Liam. It's possible that she's upset, seeing that she sent a lot of apologetic messages and even called thrice. None of which I responded to. But I know Neriah, no amount of anger would make her ignore me for four hours. Something feels off. I'd called Ethan and asked him to check in on her for me. I'm waiting for his response. I don't even know why I care about h
NERIAH'S POV I've never been threatened at gun point. All my life. Cold wind brushes over my skin, causing me to pull my jacket tighter around me. I've been coming here every single day since the incident with the flash drives but I've never run into her. Nobody seems to know her either. I was thinking there'd be a camera that captured when she came in, what she came in, and how she approached me but the attendants at the station said their cameras were bad. There was something about that woman. The aura she possessed...the audacity. The way she knew what she was looking for and where to get it. It was like she knew my every step and was just waiting for me to walk right into her arms. At some point I started to wonder if Ethan could've been working for her. Everything that happened that day was so convenient. Ethan had to use the bathroom and stopped exactly where she was waiting. It was barely five minutes after he left that she came around. Same thing when she was leaving. Bu
