I burst through the emergency room doors, people stared at me as I ran like a mad woman wearing a now dirty wedding dress.

"Robert Jones," I tried to catch my breath as I reached the reception desk. "My father…h-he was in a car accident….where is he?"

The nurse was surprised at my appearance but she quickly typed into her computer. "He's on the third floor and is currently in surgery. The elevator is just—”

I didn't wait to hear what she said as I made my way to the elevator.

Another nurse directed me to the private waiting area where I collapsed into an uncomfortable plastic chair.

"Miss Jones?"

I looked up to find a doctor in scrubs standing in front of me.

"The impact of the accident caused serious internal bleeding and we need to repair—" He went on, using medical terms I couldn't quite process.

"Is he going to be okay?" I whispered, my heart threatening to jump out of my chest.

"We're doing everything we can but I need to be honest with you about the costs. This type of emergency surgery is very expensive." He paused. "Does he have insurance?"

"“He does,” I said quickly. “But it won’t cover everything.”

“How much can you afford now?” he asked.

My stomach dropped. Even if insurance covered part of it, the rest would be a lot of money. I didn't have that kind of money now.

"We'll work with you on a payment plan. Right now, let's focus on getting him through surgery." The doctor gave me a sympathetic look. "It'll be a few hours, so try to stay calm." He walked away.

I buried my face in my hands feeling like shit. Just two months ago, I'd used all of my savings when he had that heart attack. I didn't have enough. How was I supposed to pay for this?

"Excuse me, are you Breanna Jones?"

I looked up to find a police officer standing there with a notepad.

"Yes.” I replied cautiously.

"Your father's vehicle collided with another car on Route 7. The other driver has minor injuries but his vehicle sustained significant damage." He flipped through his notes. "The other party is here in the hospital as well. We'll need to exchange insurance information and—"

"Officer, I can take it from here."

The voice that interrupted was deep and smooth.

The man walking down the hallway was tall and dressed in a perfectly ironed charcoal suit, his brown hair was styled perfectly, and not a strand was out of place.

My eyebrows shoots up in astonishment.

I recognized him. It was impossible not to. Logan had bragged about him constantly. This was his boss. The CEO everyone was supposed to impress at the wedding.

Elijah Washington. The Elijah Washington of Washington industries which was the biggest and richest company in New York.

He had the darkest green eyes I'd ever seen, like a forest at midnight. I'd seen him in business magazines but this was the first time I'd seen him up close. His features were so beautiful with an angular jaw, high cheekbones and full luscious lips.

He had the kind of face you'd see on a magazine cover or in a cologne commercial.

I opened and closed my mouth like a fish out of water. He was looking at me with a very serious expression.

"Miss Jones and I have matters to discuss," Elijah said to the officer. "I'm the other party involved in the accident."

I gasped. No no no no.

My father had hit a billionaire. He could afford the best lawyers and had the ultimate power to ruin us.

"I'll give you two a moment," the officer said, stepping away.

Elijah’s eyes looked over at my ruined wedding dress with an expression I couldn't read. He moved closer and a woody scent filled my nostrils.

"I—" My voice came out as a whisper. "I'm so sorry about your car…is your driver okay? Are you hurt?"

"My driver has a minor concussion. I'm fine and the car is replaceable." He said calmly. "Your father, however, is not doing well from what I understand."

Tears burned my eyes. "He's in surgery. They don't know if he'll make it."

"I see." He was quiet for a moment, green eyes studying me. What was he thinking? Probably thinking about ways to ruin me.

"But I'll figure out a payment plan. I'll do whatever it takes to compensate you. I promise." I pleaded. Word on the streets was that Elijah Washington was a ruthless business man and it was very foolish to cross him.

"It's funny... I was on my way to a wedding before the accident." he said. “Would it be such a coincidence that you're the bride of that wedding.”

Everything clicked into place now.

I contemplated telling him exactly what happened but I was too embarrassed.

“The wedding is off.” I finally said.

“That's perfect.”

I scrunched up my eyebrows in confusion. That was definitely not the response I was expecting.

"You said you'd do anything."

I looked up at him.

"To make this right and to handle the damages, the medical costs, all of it." His green eyes locked onto mine. "Did you mean that?"

"Yes," I said desperately. "I'll pay you back however long it takes. I'll—"

"Marry me."

I stared at him. What did he just say? I must have misheard.

"What?"

‎“Marry me. You'll be provided accommodation and everything you need. I'll cover all your father's medical expenses and a lump sum payment when we divorce."

"I don't even know you."

"You know I'm Logan's boss, which means I'm not a complete stranger and from the looks of it you need the money." He checked his watch. "The hospital will want payment information soon and the police will need to file their report about the accident."

Every word was true and it made me want to scream.

"What do you get out of this?"

"I just need a wife on paper."

"Okay," I whispered. "I'll do it." I was after all, desperate.

"Excellent." He pulled out his phone. "We'll get married today."

"Today?"

"The sooner this is handled, the sooner your father gets the care he needs without you worrying about costs.”

I'd just agreed to marry a stranger.

What the hell was wrong with me?

  • Married To My Ex's Billionaire Boss    FOURTEEN

“What does your mother want?” I asked. My impression of his mother was decent at least. I mean she was surprised, even distraught at him announcing that he was suddenly married and hadn't told or invited anyone. She wanted him to get married to Victoria and I was the strange woman he brought to them.“Look, my mother is…” He sighed. “That version of her you saw then, that's not really her. That's her on her best behavior. She's a lot and very spontaneous.” He said. “We're meeting her at her country club.”[AT THE COUNTRY CLUB]I felt completely out of place the moment we pulled up to the imposing white colonial building. The staff member opened the door for us like we were royalty."Mr. Washington, Mrs. Washington," A man greeted us. "Your mother is waiting in the Garden Terrace.”His mother was seated at table filled with drinks and beside her was that woman from the dinner. Madison I think. His sister. She looked like she'd just stepped out of a fashion magazine in a white sundres

I stood at the bathroom sink and stared at my reflection. What the hell was wrong with me?Getting jealous over a man I barely knew. A man I was only married to because of a contract..Elijah's reflection appeared in the mirror behind mine. He stepped inside and locked the door with a soft click."What are you doing?" My voice came out shakier than I wanted."You ran off." He moved closer, and I watched him approach in the mirror. "Why?""I told you. I-i-i needed the restroom." I hated that I stuttered. It made me feel weak. "Liar."I turned around to face him and my back hit the sink. "Can you stop calling me that?""Then stop lying." He moved closer to me. I could smell his cologne and see the flecks of gold in his eyes. I instantly got deja vu from last night. "You were jealous.""I wasn't—"He placed one hand on the counter beside me and I was trapped. "You were jealous, Breanna just admit it.""Fine." I said. "Yes, I was jealous.. happy now?"He held my gaze and I swallowed nerv

"Where are we going?" I asked as Elijah pulled out of the hospital parking lot. "Lunch." He responded. "Lunch?" "You haven't eaten all day." He glanced at me. "And you look like you need a distraction." He wasn't entirely wrong. My mind was still on what dad had said. I still didn't know how to figure this out but what I definitely knew was that I wasn't losing my mother's bakery. "I'm not really hungry." Even though I was lying. "You will be." Twenty minutes later, we pulled up to what looked like an ordinary building that looked like it was hidden on the quiet street. Was this even a restaurant. There was no sign of indication that there was a restaurant anywhere. "This is a restaurant?" I asked skeptically. "The best one in the city." Elijah got out and came around to open my door. "You just have to know where to find it." A man in a black suit opened the door before we even reached it. "Mr. Washington and his lady" he bowed slightly. "Welcome back, you

Elijah's hand rested on the small of my back as we walked through the corridors. Even that small touch made my stomach flutter. We reached the receptionist desk and was immediately escorted to Dad's private room.He looked so much smaller in that hospital bed than I remembered. Now he looked fragile, with tubes and monitors attached to him. His eyes lit up when he saw me, and that familiar warm smile spread across his face."Bree-bug," he said, using the nickname he'd called me since I was five. "You came.""Of course I did." I crossed to his bed and hugged him carefully, mindful of the IV. "How are you feeling?”"Much better. This room is fantastic but the food here is horrible though." He looked past me to Elijah. "Dad, this is—" I gestured to Elijah. "Logan!" My father gave him a big smile. "Good to see you, son. Though you look a bit different.. did you get taller?"Oh god."Dad, this isn't Logan." This was embarrassing. "I know I've been out of it but I'd recognize my son-in

At exactly one o'clock, I came downstairs to find Elijah waiting. He had changed into dark jeans and a black button-up, the sleeves rolled to his elbows. He looked good. Too good."Ready?" he asked. It seemed he wanted to say something but he stopped himself which I felt relieved by. Whatever he wanted to say, I didn't want to hear it. I nodded as we made our way out the house and into his luxury car. Elijah hadn't said a word since we left the penthouse, his hands gripped the steering wheel like it had personally offended him.Taking advantage of the silence, I pulled out my phone and checked the texts from the hospital. The surgery had been successful and dad was doing really well and recovering faster than expected.I glanced at Elijah who looked tense. His shoulders were quite rigid like he was holding in his breath. There was something definitely bothering him, but I didn't know him well enough to ask what.‎ We pulled into the hospital parking lot, but before I could even unb

"Wait."He pulled back so abruptly, breathing hard. His eyes were filled with lust and a flash of panic crossed his face. "Wait," he repeated, pulling himself away from me. I lay there in confusion but I could still feel his touch on my body. My heart was racing and my skin was on fire. "I'm sorry." He ran a hand through his hair, refusing to look at me. "We shouldn't be doing this."At that moment I felt so embarrassed. I wished there was a hole I could crawl into. He pulled me up gently from the bed and before I could say anything he kissed my forehead softly. "See you tomorrow," he said quietly. "Have a good night." Then he walked out and closed the door behind him without even looking back.I stared at the closed door. My emotions were literally all over the place. I looked all over the room trying to make sense of what the fuck just happened. I fell back onto the massive bed and stared at that ridiculously high ceiling. This man was going to drive me insane.★★★★★I woke up
