EUDORA

Already dressed for work, I grabbed my purse and headed downstairs with the plan to grab a quick breakfast before leaving, but I ran into mum in the hallway instead.

“You’re going to work?”

Obviously. “Yes.”

She folded her arms, looking at me like I was doing something foolish. “The wedding date has been fixed for next month. I don’t think you should be stressing yourself with work. We don’t want you looking like a panda on your wedding day. People will talk.”

I blinked.

Her words barely registered except for one part.

“The wedding date has been fixed?” I repeated slowly. I didn’t even agree to the wedding.

“And I already took the liberty of informing your boss. You’ll be taking three months off. For the wedding and your honeymoon.”

For a second, I thought I misheard her. My jaw fell open. “You did what?”

“I didn’t stutter,” she said flatly, already turning away. “Go back inside and change.” She started walking off.

“I never agreed to marrying Desmond,” I said under my breath.

She stopped, then slowly turned around to face me.

“He’s clearly marrying me out of spite,” I added.

“And that,” she spat, stepping toward me again, “is too much punishment for your crime?”

My breath caught.

“After what you did to your sister,” she continued, “our only hope of escaping this middle-class life… you think being trapped in a loveless marriage with money, comfort, everything you could ever need is too much punishment?”

She scoffed.

“For almost killing your sister and driving her away?”

Being blamed for what happened to my sister wasn’t entirely unfair.

I didn’t hit her on purpose… but I still hit her.

And it cost her everything.

Her ability to walk. Her future.

And now, from what Desmond said last week, maybe even her will to live.

“You should have at least given me time to think about this,” I said quietly. “About the marriage.”

“It’s not a proposal,” Mum retorted. “The Nelsons have agreed to fund your father’s project after the wedding. Something your sister was going to do before you… before you left her crippled.”

I lowered my gaze, swallowing the lump in my throat.

She was never going to let me forget.

Not now. Not ever.

“And what about my job?” I asked after a moment, trying to steady my voice. “Taking three months off like that could cost me my position at the office.”

She rolled her eyes. “Then you should speak to Desmond about it. That was his doing, not mine.”

A dry laugh slipped out of me. “Of course it was.”

So that was why my boss approved it so easily.

Who would say no to the Nelsons?

“Desmond said he’s only marrying you because he owes your sister,” she said. “She saved his life years ago. And since she’s not here for him to repay that debt…” She paused, her lips pressing into a thin line.

“He’s going to repay it by marrying you.”

I almost laughed.

The whole thing sounded so absurd.

“And you believe him?”

Mum only shrugged. “As long as it gets you out of my sight,” she said carelessly. “Seeing you every day only reminds me of the daughter I lost.”

That shut me up. There is nothing left to say.

Exhaling heavily, I turned slowly and walked back to my room. The moment the door closed behind me, my strength gave out. I slid down against it, pulling my knees close as the tears came uncontrollably.

And I cried until there was nothing left in me.

*************

The past two weeks was hectic and enduring for me. I was told to choose the wedding gown my sister had once dreamed of wearing, I was made to pick her favorite cake flavour, strawberry, despite the fact that I am allergic to strawberry.

The decorations? Her favorite colors.

The food? Her favorite dishes. Her favorite snacks.

Everything.

It wasn’t my wedding.

It was hers.

I was just… standing in her place.

An empty shell, moving where I was told, agreeing because I didn’t have the right to refuse.

Because, in everyone’s eyes, I was the reason she wasn’t here to live those moments herself.

“Ms. Eudora?”

The voice pulled me back.

I blinked, slowly returning to the present.

The saleswoman stood in front of me, holding out a gold ring, her smile polite and patient.

“Do you like the ring?” she asked gently.

I stared at it for a moment, then tore my gaze away from the ring and looked at Desmond.

He was already watching me, impatience written all over his face.

“Well?” he hissed.

My fingers tightened slightly against my palm.

“Can we… change the ring?” I asked quietly.

Even as the words left my mouth, I knew I shouldn’t have said them. I had been warned, by him, by my parents, to agree to everything. To nod, to smile, to not make things difficult.

But this… this wasn’t something I could just ignore.

“Please give us a moment,” Desmond said to the saleswoman, his eyes never leaving mine.

She nodded politely, set the box down on the small table, and walked away.

The second we were alone, his expression darkened.

“Have you lost your mind?” he snapped. “What did I tell you? Your sister chose this ring. She loved it. So you will wear it.”

A dull ache started to build in my head.

“I’m hypersensitive to gold,” I said, trying to reason with him. “That’s why this ring won’t_”

His hand shot out, grabbing my elbow.

Hard.

He pulled me closer, his grip tight enough to hurt.

“You think I don’t know that?” he asked coldly.

I stared at him, confused and frustrated. “Then why force me to wear it?”

“It’s just rashes,” he replied dismissively. “You can take it off when you get home and use whatever ointment you need.”

His finger pointed toward the ring on the table.

“But that ring?” he continued, “you are wearing it.”

ORION“I’ve been thinking about moving away.”My eyes shifted from Ariel, who was laughing happily with her friends a few feet away, to Eudora.“Are you running away because of Desmond and Camellia?” I asked bluntly.Keeping her eyes on Ariel, she released a long, tired sigh before slowly shaking her head. “No, I’m not running away. I’m protecting my daughter.”“Sounds exactly the same to me.”The thought alone irritated me. The fact that she was considering leaving the life she had built…leaving me, made my jaw clench. She turned away from Ariel and looked at me.“Desmond has shown up,” she said softly. “Camellia has shown up too. And sooner or later, her parents will find me as well.”She paused for a moment.“If they keep appearing one after another, it’s only a matter of time before they discover the truth about Ariel.”The fear in her voice was subtle, but I heard it.“You can’t hide forever,” I clasped my hands together tightly, stopping myself from reaching for her. Every insti

DESMOND“It’s been approved,” Victor announced, though there was a noticeable caution in his voice.I leaned back slightly and stared out the window of my hotel room. Returning to New Zealand again has to be insane.“Remind me again,” Victor continued, “why exactly are you arranging a meeting with your ex-wife?”I rubbed a hand across my jaw. “It’s nothing personal.”He scoffed. “Is that what you keep telling yourself? Or is that the lie you're feeding yourself so you can sleep better at night?”I exhaled slowly. “I just need an artwork from her.”“And where exactly are you planning to put this artwork?” he demanded. “Your house? Because if you do, your wife is going to rain down fire and brimstone on your head. Your office? Then that means you're hiding it from her, which is somehow even worse.”“Victor_”“No, listen to me,” he cut in. “There are thousands of artists in the world. Thousands. You have more money than most people can dream of. You can buy artwork from anyone. So why do

ORION Caught off guard by my blatant arrogance, she stared at me for a moment, blinking slowly as if trying to decide whether I was serious or simply insane. Her fingers tightened around the stem of her wineglass. “I can have hotel management throw you out of this place.” she threatened coldly, her eyes narrowing into slits. A faint smile tugged at the corner of my lips. “I think the hotel values its investors a lot more than a random woman who merely reserved a table for lunch.” The confidence in my voice made her expression falter. “You’re an investor here?” That wasn't why I was here, so correcting her assumption wasn't necessary. “Eudora. I heard you paid her a visit at the gallery.” I leaned slightly forward. “What exactly was the purpose of that meeting?” She released her wineglass and folded her arms across her chest. “Tell me something first,” she replied. “Are you an enemy of Eudora's or one of her admirers?” “That’s not the answer to my question.” I deadpanned. “Let's

ORION“Desmond has been relentlessly demanding a meeting with you,” Cartier announced as he strode into my office without bothering to knock. He tossed a thick folder onto my desk before taking a step back.I lifted my gaze from the documents I had been reviewing and frowned. “Desmond wants to meet with me?”A chuckle escaped Cartier as he noticed the confusion on my face. Pulling out the chair opposite mine, he dropped into it and crossed one leg over the other.“Not exactly with you,” he clarified. “He's been sending requests through the management email, demanding a meeting with Eudora.”Just how desperate is that bastard becoming?“Grant him the meeting.”Cartier raised an eyebrow. “With you or with Eudora?”My head snapped up instantly. “Have you completely lost your mind?” I hissed.Cartier winced slightly.“Why on earth would you grant him a meeting with Eudora?”“I was just making sure,” he muttered defensively before pointing toward the folder he had brought in. “Anyway, tha

EUDORAThe loud ring of my landline dragged me out of the creative haze I always fell into whenever I painted. With a quiet sigh, I set my brush down on the easel tray and wiped my fingers on a cloth before making my way across the room. I already knew who it was. Very few people dared interrupt me while I was working.Aria was one of them.Orion was the other.Picking up the receiver, I pressed it to my ear.“Hello, Aria?”“There’s someone here to see you.”I frowned slightly, already reaching behind me to untie the strings of my paint-stained apron “Who?”“Mrs. Nelson.”My fingers paused midway through the knot “Camellia is here to see me?”“Yes.”A dry laugh escaped me.Of all the people I had expected to hear about today, Camellia Nelson was not one of them.“Well,” I muttered as I resumed untying the apron, “let her in.”I hung up the phone and stood still for a moment, wondering what could possibly bring her all the way here.Curiosity eventually won. After removing the apron, I

DESMONDA few days later, I found myself standing in front of the old woman’s shop once again. The small bell above the door jingled as I stepped inside and the old woman looked up from behind the counter. The moment she saw me, recognition lit up her face.“It’s you,” she said warmly. “I remember you.” A smile spread across her wrinkled face.I didn’t return it.“I have some questions,” I said directly. “About that night.”Her smile faded slightly as she studied my face, then she nodded. “Of course.” She gestured toward one of the empty tables near the corner of the shop. “Let’s sit down.”As I walked toward the chair, she slowly followed behind me.“What can I get for you?” she asked politely. “Tea? Coffee? Something cold?”“Nothing.”The truth was that I didn’t trust the cleanliness of the place enough to eat or drink anything from it.Taking a seat, I placed my iPad on the table, unlocked it and turned the screen toward her.The picture showed Camellia as a child.I pointed at the
