Chapter 1: The Broken Threshold

last update publish date: 2024-11-24 17:35:27

Emma Carter stared out the window of the sleek black sedan, watching the pristine skyline of Veridia City dissolve into a bleak, rain-drenched stretch of coastal highway. Beside her on the leather seat lay the freshly signed marriage contract—a heartless transaction that officially sold her off to clear the Carter family’s crippling debts.

Her stepmother, Evelyn, and her father had made their terms agonizingly clear that morning. Her spoiled younger sister, Vera, had originally been chosen to marry the fallen titan of the Johnson Group. But the moment the news confirmed that Ethan Johnson’s legs were permanently ruined after a horrific car accident, Vera had thrown a violent tantrum, refusing to wed a "useless cripple." Naturally, the family turned to Emma—the neglected eldest daughter who had spent her life existing in the shadows—to serve as the disposable sacrifice.

Emma’s fingers tightened around the strap of her modest handbag. They believed they were punishing her, pushing her into the lion's den to rot beside a bitter, broken man. They didn't know that for Emma, entering a cold contract marriage with a stranger was a price she was more than willing to pay if it meant escaping the psychological prison of the Carter household and securing the funds needed to maintain her comatose mother’s private medical care.

The sedan ground to a halt before a massive set of iron gates that guarded the entrance to the Johnson Estate. Beyond the wrought-iron bars, the looming silhouette of the manor sat perched on the edge of a jagged cliff, swallowed by the dark afternoon storm.

The driver didn't bother opening her door. "End of the line, Miss Carter. The guards won't let the car past the outer perimeter."

Emma stepped out into the relentless downpour, the icy rain soaking through her thin coat within seconds. Dragging her single suitcase behind her, she approached the security gate, where two imposing bodyguards in black suits blocked the path, their faces completely devoid of warmth.

"State your business," the lead guard barked over the roaring wind.

"I am Emma Carter," she replied, her voice steady and clear despite the rain lashing at her face. "I am here to see Mr. Ethan Johnson. We are legally wed as of this morning."

The guard didn't even glance at her documents. "Orders are absolute. Mr. Johnson stated clearly that no member of the Carter family is permitted onto the property. Leave now, or you will be removed by force."

"I am not leaving," Emma said calmly, taking a step closer to the iron gate. "My legal residence is now registered to this estate. Either you open this gate, or I sit on this pavement until the press notices the new Mrs. Johnson hypothermic outside her husband's door."

The guard’s jaw clenched. Recognizing the fierce, unyielding glint in her eyes, he cursed under his breath, pressed a heavy code into the security panel, and allowed the heavy gates to creak open.

Emma didn't hesitate. She dragged her suitcase up the long, winding cobblestone driveway, the wind whipping her damp hair around her face. She reached the grand double doors of the manor, her clothes weighed down with water. Raising a pale, trembling hand, she knocked firmly three times against the heavy oak wood.

Silence stretched for a long, agonizing moment. Then, with a heavy, atmospheric groan, the double doors swung wide open.

Emma stepped across the threshold, taking her first step into the dim, shadowy foyer. The grand hall was freezing, lit only by the ambient gray light filtering through the storm-streaked stained glass above.

Sitting in the absolute center of the grand hall, framed by the darkness, was a man in a sleek, high-tech wheelchair.

Ethan Johnson was a physical masterclass in rugged, lethal perfection, even in his ruined state. Broad shoulders, a sharp, angular jawline covered in dark stubble, and dark, piercing eyes that gleamed with pure, unfiltered malice. But his posture was stiff, radiating a cold, bitter violence that filled the entire room.

In his right hand, Ethan held an expensive, heavy crystal liquor bottle, half-filled with amber liquid. He didn't say a word. He simply stared at Emma with icy, arrogant contempt—before raising his arm and hurling the heavy glass bottle straight at her feet.

CRASH!

The crystal exploded against the marble floor inches from her toes, spraying amber liquid and razor-sharp glass shards directly across her shoes and the hem of her wet dress.

"Get out," Ethan’s voice echoed through the vast hall, low, gravelly, and laced with absolute hatred. "Before I make you regret ever stepping into my house, woman."

The room was filled with a sense of quiet anticipation as the hours ticked on. The sterile smell of the hospital and the steady beep of machines were the only sounds breaking the silence. Emma’s contractions had become closer, sharper, and there was no doubt now that the baby was ready to make its grand entrance into the world. She lay back on the bed, drenched in sweat, her breathing labored but steady. Ethan was right there, holding her hand with a firmness that grounded her, as if reminding her that together, they could handle anything. His eyes were full of admiration for her strength, even though the anxiety in his chest was almost unbearable. He kissed the back of her hand, his voice low and soothing. “You’re doing amazing, Emma. Just a little longer, okay? We’re almost there.”Emma gave him a weak but determined smile, squeezing his hand in return. It was overwhelming, this entire experience. But as the pain surged again, she focused on him, on the love they shared, on the fami

The days were blending into one long stretch of anticipation. Every morning, Emma would wake up to Ethan’s gentle kisses on her forehead, feeling the warmth of his love as he checked in on her and the baby. It had been several months since they’d received the news, and though Emma had grown used to the idea of becoming a mother, it still felt surreal at times. There were moments when she would find herself staring at her reflection in the mirror, wondering if she was truly ready for the next chapter of her life.It was the middle of the week when Emma felt the baby kick harder than ever before. Startled, she pressed her hand to her belly, feeling the fluttering movement beneath her fingertips. The baby had been moving regularly, but this sensation was different, stronger. For a moment, she marveled at the feeling, but then a wave of anxiety washed over her. She hadn’t experienced anything quite like this before, and she couldn’t help but wonder if it was a sign of something.Ethan had

Time had slowed down, and she could finally catch her breath.Ethan had been her rock, more attentive than she ever could have imagined. His love for her was evident in every action, from the way he’d sit beside her for hours, just talking about their future, to how he’d insist on doing everything for her, even when she tried to push back. The pregnancy had created an even deeper bond between them, and despite the uncertainty they both felt about their future, Emma knew one thing for sure: they were in this together. But she still had her moments of doubt. He was known for his relentless drive, his unwavering determination, but with the baby on the way, he began to think more about his legacy—about what kind of father he wanted to be, what kind of role model he would become. He was used to being the one who solved problems, who called the shots, who dominated the room. But now, as he stood next to Emma, his hand resting gently on her round belly, he realized that nothing he had ever done in his life would compare to the responsibil
