sorry it's short.

Haelyn’s hands were still twisted in Dean’s shirt when the panic hit her.

The second the heat of the kiss started to fade, everything else rushed in — the fact that she’d just cried in front of him, the fact that her parents still hadn’t called, the fact that she’d walked downstairs and kissed him like she needed it. Her stomach dropped.

She let go of his shirt and stepped back so fast she almost stumbled.

Dean’s hands fell away from her waist. He didn’t try to pull her back.

  • Married To The Farmer    Chapter Fifteen

Haelyn woke up before the sun fully rose. For a few seconds she just lay there staring at the ceiling, hoping it was still Saturday. It wasn’t. The light coming through the curtains was different.Sunday.She sat up slowly. The dress was still hanging on the wardrobe door where she’d left it. Haelyn dragged herself out of bed and walked to the bathroom. She washed her face with cold water, brushing her teeth longer than necessary just to waste time. When she looked in the mirror, her eyes looked a little tired. She hadn’t slept well.Back in the room, she took the dress off the hanger and laid it on the bed. She stood there staring at it for a long moment before finally pulling off her shirt and stepping into it. The fabric was soft against her skin. She reached behind her and struggled with the zipper for a few seconds before managing to pull it up.It fit the same way it had the first time. She tied the ribbon at the waist slowly, fingers slightly unsteady. When she was done, she s

He just looked at her, breathing a little harder than usual, waiting.Haelyn wiped her mouth with the back of her hand like she could erase what just happened. Her face felt hot. Her eyes were still puffy from crying.“That didn’t mean anything,” she said quickly.Dean’s expression didn’t change much, but something in his eyes cooled a little. “Okay.”“I mean it.” Her voice came out sharper than she intended. “I was upset. That’s all. Don’t stand there looking at me like it was some big moment.”

Haelyn came downstairs late in the morning. Her eyes were still a little swollen from the night before, but she’d washed her face and pulled her hair back like that would somehow make her look fine. Dean was in the kitchen when she walked in. He glanced up from the coffee he was making. “Morning.” She didn’t answer. She just stood there for a second, then held out her hand. “I need your phone.” Dean looked at her for a moment, then reached into his pocket and gave it to her without asking why. She took it and stepped out onto the porch, closing the door behind her. Her hands were already slightly shaky as she typed in her mom’s number. She pressed the phone to her ear and waited. It rang. And rang. Then the voicemail kicked in. Haelyn closed her eyes. She hung up and tried again. Same thing. Straight to voicemail after a few rings. She switched to her dad’s number. Her thumb hovered over the call button for a second before she pressed it. It rang twice, then went to voicem

Haelyn sat on the edge of the bed staring at the dress hanging on the wardrobe door.It was simple. Soft cream color, vintage-looking, nothing fancy. The kind of dress someone in a small town would call “nice.” To her it looked like something she’d never pick in a million years. No design, no real shape, just plain fabric and a ribbon at the waist. She hated it.Dean had brought it back yesterday from town and left it in her room without saying much. Just, “Try it on later.” Like it was normal. Like this whole thing was normal. Now it was two days before the wedding and everything felt too real. She heard him moving around downstairs. After a while his voice came up the stairs.“We need to leave soon.”Haelyn didn’t answer right away. She dragged herself up, pulled on a regular shirt and jeans, and left the dress hanging there. She wasn’t putting it on yet. Not unless she had to.Downstairs, Dean was by the door with his keys.“Where are we going?” she asked, even though she already h

Haelyn was already in a mood before the knock came. She’d been sitting at the kitchen table picking at a piece of toast she didn’t even want, replaying the night before for the hundredth time. The kiss. The way Dean had looked at her. The fact that she hadn’t pushed him away fast enough. It was irritating her more than she wanted to admit. Then someone knocked.Dean went to open the door. The second Haelyn heard the soft voice, her shoulders tensed.“Hi,” Lola said. “My mom sent extra bread. And some jam.”Of course she did.Dean stepped aside to let her in. Lola walked into the kitchen with that same careful little smile, red hair neat, basket in her hands like she was performing some kind of good deed. Her eyes found Dean first, then flicked over to Haelyn.“Oh. Hi.”Haelyn leaned back in her chair. “You again.”Lola’s smile faltered slightly. “I just came to drop this off.”“People in this town really love dropping things off,” Haelyn said, voice dry. “Bread, jam, advice. What’s ne

Haelyn couldn’t sleep. The room felt warm, and her mind wouldn’t shut up. After a while she gave up, pushed the blanket off, and sat up. Her throat was dry. She was still wearing one of Dean’s old shirts. It slipped off one shoulder as she stood. She went downstairs quietly. A light was on in the kitchen.Dean sat at the table with a glass of water, sleeves rolled up. He looked up when she walked in.“Couldn’t sleep?” he asked.“Just needed water.”She filled a glass and drank half of it before turning to face him. The kitchen felt smaller at night. She was very aware of how short the shirt was.“You’ve been quiet since town,” she said.“Have I?”“Yes.”Dean leaned back in his chair. His eyes moved over her once — the bare legs, the loose shirt — then back to her face.“Is this about Lola?” she asked.“No.”“She likes you.”“I know.”Haelyn frowned. “That’s all you’re going to say?”“What else do you want me to say?”“I don’t know. Something.”Dean stood up. The quiet stretched betwee
