Chapter 1

Wiltspoon’s hot weather in October was a killer. Still, the mornings and evenings were eased by the late autumn breeze.

Serenity Hunt got up first thing in the morning to make breakfast for her sister’s family of three. She then grabbed her birth certificate and slipped away in the silence.

“We’re going Dutch from now on, and I’m talking about everything—the living expenses, the mortgage, and auto loans! Your sister should be splitting the cost since she’s staying at our place. Sure, she pays two thousand bucks a month, but it doesn’t stretch very far. She’s basically mooching off us.”

Serenity overheard her brother-in-law’s comment during the couple’s argument last night.

She had to move out of her sister’s place.

However, there was only one way to put her sister’s mind to rest, and that was to get married.

Since Serenity wanted to tie the knot on short notice without ever having had a boyfriend, she decided to take up on Grandma May’s offer. Serenity had saved the old lady by chance and came to know that Grandma May was trying to marry off her grandson, Zachary York, who had trouble settling down.

Twenty minutes later, Serenity got off to her pit stop at City Hall.

“Serenity.”

A familiar voice summoned her attention the moment she got out of the car. It was Grandma May.

“Grandma May.”

As Serenity hurried over, she took notice of a towering yet distant figure standing next to Grandma May. He must be Zachary, her husband-to-be.

At a closer distance, Serenity was dumbstruck after getting a load of Zachary’s face.

According to Grandma May, her eldest grandson, Zachary had no luck with the ladies despite hitting thirty. Needless to say, Grandma May was worried sick.

Serenity had always assumed that he must be hideous.

After all, she heard that Zachary had a high-paying job up the corporate ladder in a major group.

Now that they had met face-to-face, Serenity realized that she had gotten it all wrong.

Zachary was attractive and carried himself with an air of aloofness. Standing next to Grandma May with a sour face, he appeared standoffish and gave off vibes to stay away from him.

Serenity’s gaze strayed to a black MPV parked nearby. Judging by the logo, it was a national car rather than some multimillion-dollar vehicle. Serenity deduced that the economic difference between her and Zachary was not that far off.

She and an old friend from school had started a bookshop at the entrance of Wiltspoon School.

During her free time, Serenity would also knit little knick-knacks to sell online. The sales were not too bad.

In a month, she could bring home a steady income of twenty thousand dollars. The same amount in Wiltspoon would position her among the white collars. That was why she could afford to hand her sister five thousand bucks for living expenses.

Nevertheless, her brother-in-law had no clue about her earnings. Serenity told her sister to pocket three thousand bucks and only disclose the remaining two thousand to her husband.

“Serenity, this is my oldest grandson, Zachary. He’s a thirty-year-old man and can’t even get himself out there. Although he’s not the warmest person, he’s attentive and considerate. You saved my life, and we’ve known each other for three months. Trust me that I won’t recommend a bad man to you.”

Taking in his nana's description of him, Zachary looked askance at Serenity, icily and profoundly without saying a word.

Perhaps he had grown immune to her grumbles.

Serenity knew that Grandma May had three sons, and each gave her three grandsons, blessing her with nine grandsons. Since a granddaughter was missing in Grandma May’s life, she sought that affinity with Serenity.

Although blushing, Serenity openly extended her right hand to Zachary and introduced herself with a smile, “Hello, Mr. York. I’m Serenity Hunt.”

Zachary’s penetrating gaze scanned Serenity from head to toe and back. With Nana clearing her throat, he reached out his right hand for a shake, albeit his voice reflected an icy tone. “Zachary.”

After the handshake, Zachary raised his left hand to look at the time before informing Serenity. “I’m a busy man. Let’s get it done and over with.”

Serenity hummed in acknowledgment.

Grandma May jumped in. “Go on inside to sort out the paperwork. I’ll wait for you here.”

“Nana, get into the car. It’s a hot day out.”

Zachary said as he helped Nana into the car.

Through his actions, Serenity was able to agree with Grandma May’s statement that Zachary might be callous, but his heart was in the right place.

Although they were strangers, Grandma May mentioned that Serenity could move out of her sister’s place into an apartment Zachary owned and paid for in full after the marriage. It could reassure her sister that Serenity was in good hands and end the arguments in the apartment because of her.

It was only a marriage of convenience.

Soon, Zachary returned to Serenity’s side and uttered, “Let’s go.”

“Sure.” Serenity quietly followed him into City Hall.

At the registry office, Zachary urged Serenity. “Ms. Hunt, you can still change your mind if you don’t want to go through with this. It doesn’t matter what my Nana says. Marriage is a huge commitment, not to be taken lightly.”

He was hoping Serenity had second thoughts because he had no intention of marrying a woman he had just met.

Solville was in the north, while Wiltspoon was in the south. The folks of these two cities led vastly different lifestyles as well. Winter was not cold in Wiltspoon but Solville experienced heavy snowfall. The people of Solville had to put on extra layers as soon as fall came around.“We’ll accept River and Rosalie’s relationship as long as they genuinely love each other, even if they live in different countries. Now, they are simply living in different cities of the same country. “Traveling is convenient nowadays. They can reach each other’s cities on the same day via airplane or train. Distance isn’t a problem.”Damian was open-minded. Christian teased him, saying, “I think you’re eager to marry your sister off.”Damian smiled. “Rosalie is hitting thirty soon. If she doesn’t get married, our family will continue to worry. She’s the eldest girl, so if she doesn’t do it first, then her younger cousins and sisters will refuse to.“My grandpa has been anxious about it.”On the

“Did River come again?” Damian asked. Christian replied, “Not only did he come, but he also brought flowers and presents. I think they’re jewelry. He’s pursuing Rosalie openly now.”Damian smiled. “I guess we can just sit back and watch. Rosalie doesn’t get lovestruck. Whether he can win her heart also depends on the future direction of Crest Co.. If it remains a competitor of Summit Group, he and Rosalie can only remain the way they are now.”Marriage would be difficult. There would be no meaning to it if Rosalie and River kept their guard up around each other.“Have you all investigated River’s family background?” Christian suddenly asked. “Although I’m not romantically in love with Rosalie, our families are close, and we’ve been on a blind date before. I hope she can marry a nice person. We should find a partner who has a similar social status to us.”If it were just a fling, the person’s family background did not matter. However, once marriage was involved, they had to ch

Christian replied bemusedly, “If you like Rosalie, you should just say so. Why beat around the bush like this?”“Like I said, I’m not beating around the bush anymore.”River waved the bouquet and gifts he bought. “I'm working on it. I just don’t know when I’ll actually get to invite you to my wedding.”Christian suddenly patted his shoulder. “Good luck, Mr. York. We’re all waiting for the day. But you two are notorious rivals. The obstacles in your way are just too big.“That might be tricky to resolve. How about this—why don’t you transfer all your shares in Crest Co. to me?”“Why not transfer your shares in Silver Co. to me instead? I can afford to buy out Silver Co.”Christian chuckled. “Just kidding. I believe you can handle it, Mr. York. Come on, let’s go in together.”He led the way inside.River immediately followed. “Does that mean you intend to compete with me, Mr. Jacques?”Christian glanced at him and admitted frankly, “I'm no match for you. I know my place and won'

“Why are you here at this hour, Mr. Jacques? It’s a little bit late for business. Are you here to invite Rosalie out to dinner, too?”Christian countered, “Am I not allowed to? We’ve dated before.”That was what gnawed at River the most.He was not technically dating Rosalie right now, and she had dated a few other rich heirs, too. Luckily, her standards were high enough that it had not gone anywhere with those guys. When she went on that first blind date with Christian, River had known about it, but at the time, he had not realized he had feelings for Rosalie. When he heard about it, he said in private that Rosalie was bad-tempered and had too strong a personality for Christian to handle, and that it would definitely not work out.Lo and behold, he was right on the money, and things did not work out between them after the blind date. There was no follow-up either.Unexpectedly, not long ago, the two decided to see each other again.Christian even publicly appeared as Rosalie’s

It was after they learned his parents had been imprisoned that these former friends and classmates distanced themselves. Trenton knew they looked down on him for it.His good friends from university had also not kept in close contact after graduation. Lana was the only one who remained a close friend. She was the girl he liked, and she never looked down on him for his family background.Would her parents disapprove?Trenton turned away and walked inside.Elsewhere, in Solville, River’s car was stopped in front of the Summit Group entrance again. There was a bouquet of flowers on the front passenger seat, as well as a set of jewelry he had just bought. He planned to give these to Rosalie.Though Rosalie had not agreed to be his girlfriend yet, it did not stop him from pursuing her. There were already rumors about the two of them, so he might as well give them something real to talk about.Besides, Rosalie was not entirely indifferent toward him. Once he ended the call with the head of the detective agency, Trenton walked toward his own and drove off.Camryn had returned to Wildridge Manor. Trenton followed after her.He had just parked in the manor parking lot when he heard the familiar sound of his nephew’s voice.“Uncle Trent! Uncle Trent!”Hearing his nephew’s clear, cheerful cry instantly lifted Trenton’s spirits. He got out of the car and had barely closed the door when Merry rushed over, wrapping his arms around one of Trenton’s legs.“Uncle Trent, you’re finally here! I missed you so much. Did you miss me?” Merry tilted his little face up as he asked Trenton.Trenton bent down to pick up Merry, smiling. “How could I not? I missed you so much. That’s why I came to see you today the moment I had some free time.”“Really? Then can you play with me today?”“Of course. Come on, let’s go inside first. Are your parents back already?”“Yup, they’re inside.”Trenton carried his little nephew toward the main building.
