Chapter 1

Wiltspoon’s hot weather in October was a killer. Still, the mornings and evenings were eased by the late autumn breeze.

Serenity Hunt got up first thing in the morning to make breakfast for her sister’s family of three. She then grabbed her birth certificate and slipped away in the silence.

“We’re going Dutch from now on, and I’m talking about everything—the living expenses, the mortgage, and auto loans! Your sister should be splitting the cost since she’s staying at our place. Sure, she pays two thousand bucks a month, but it doesn’t stretch very far. She’s basically mooching off us.”

Serenity overheard her brother-in-law’s comment during the couple’s argument last night.

She had to move out of her sister’s place.

However, there was only one way to put her sister’s mind to rest, and that was to get married.

Since Serenity wanted to tie the knot on short notice without ever having had a boyfriend, she decided to take up on Grandma May’s offer. Serenity had saved the old lady by chance and came to know that Grandma May was trying to marry off her grandson, Zachary York, who had trouble settling down.

Twenty minutes later, Serenity got off to her pit stop at City Hall.

“Serenity.”

A familiar voice summoned her attention the moment she got out of the car. It was Grandma May.

“Grandma May.”

As Serenity hurried over, she took notice of a towering yet distant figure standing next to Grandma May. He must be Zachary, her husband-to-be.

At a closer distance, Serenity was dumbstruck after getting a load of Zachary’s face.

According to Grandma May, her eldest grandson, Zachary had no luck with the ladies despite hitting thirty. Needless to say, Grandma May was worried sick.

Serenity had always assumed that he must be hideous.

After all, she heard that Zachary had a high-paying job up the corporate ladder in a major group.

Now that they had met face-to-face, Serenity realized that she had gotten it all wrong.

Zachary was attractive and carried himself with an air of aloofness. Standing next to Grandma May with a sour face, he appeared standoffish and gave off vibes to stay away from him.

Serenity’s gaze strayed to a black MPV parked nearby. Judging by the logo, it was a national car rather than some multimillion-dollar vehicle. Serenity deduced that the economic difference between her and Zachary was not that far off.

She and an old friend from school had started a bookshop at the entrance of Wiltspoon School.

During her free time, Serenity would also knit little knick-knacks to sell online. The sales were not too bad.

In a month, she could bring home a steady income of twenty thousand dollars. The same amount in Wiltspoon would position her among the white collars. That was why she could afford to hand her sister five thousand bucks for living expenses.

Nevertheless, her brother-in-law had no clue about her earnings. Serenity told her sister to pocket three thousand bucks and only disclose the remaining two thousand to her husband.

“Serenity, this is my oldest grandson, Zachary. He’s a thirty-year-old man and can’t even get himself out there. Although he’s not the warmest person, he’s attentive and considerate. You saved my life, and we’ve known each other for three months. Trust me that I won’t recommend a bad man to you.”

Taking in his nana's description of him, Zachary looked askance at Serenity, icily and profoundly without saying a word.

Perhaps he had grown immune to her grumbles.

Serenity knew that Grandma May had three sons, and each gave her three grandsons, blessing her with nine grandsons. Since a granddaughter was missing in Grandma May’s life, she sought that affinity with Serenity.

Although blushing, Serenity openly extended her right hand to Zachary and introduced herself with a smile, “Hello, Mr. York. I’m Serenity Hunt.”

Zachary’s penetrating gaze scanned Serenity from head to toe and back. With Nana clearing her throat, he reached out his right hand for a shake, albeit his voice reflected an icy tone. “Zachary.”

After the handshake, Zachary raised his left hand to look at the time before informing Serenity. “I’m a busy man. Let’s get it done and over with.”

Serenity hummed in acknowledgment.

Grandma May jumped in. “Go on inside to sort out the paperwork. I’ll wait for you here.”

“Nana, get into the car. It’s a hot day out.”

Zachary said as he helped Nana into the car.

Through his actions, Serenity was able to agree with Grandma May’s statement that Zachary might be callous, but his heart was in the right place.

Although they were strangers, Grandma May mentioned that Serenity could move out of her sister’s place into an apartment Zachary owned and paid for in full after the marriage. It could reassure her sister that Serenity was in good hands and end the arguments in the apartment because of her.

It was only a marriage of convenience.

Soon, Zachary returned to Serenity’s side and uttered, “Let’s go.”

“Sure.” Serenity quietly followed him into City Hall.

At the registry office, Zachary urged Serenity. “Ms. Hunt, you can still change your mind if you don’t want to go through with this. It doesn’t matter what my Nana says. Marriage is a huge commitment, not to be taken lightly.”

He was hoping Serenity had second thoughts because he had no intention of marrying a woman he had just met.

Levi had definitely not come back to work.He truly did not have the ability.River would not let him leave so easily. Last time, the moment that meetings were mentioned, this guy had bolted faster than a rabbit. He pulled Levi down to sit and said sternly, “Levi, you’d better sit your ass down. If you dare leave, I’ll go on strike!”Levi’s face fell.He did not know whether to sit or not.“The soup, River, drink your soup. Finish it first.”He tried to placate River by urging him to drink the soup.“I-I won’t leave.”After threatening Levi, River was confident he would not dare leave. He then went on to finish the soup.Once he set down the flask, Levi quickly handed him a few tissues to wipe his mouth.“Levi, you don’t need to act like a lackey. We’re equals. You even founded Crest Co. Besides, you’ve been a hands-off boss for years now. It’s time you took on some responsibilities.“I’m not asking you to come to the office every day. Just spend half a day here to oversee

Besides, a couple of years ago, he had also bought some apartments and commercial properties to rent out. Though the real estate market was not doing well these days, the properties he had purchased were in prime downtown Solville locations, so he had no trouble finding tenants. The monthly rental income was enough to cover his family’s daily expenses, not to mention the substantial savings he had in the bank. Not being skilled at investing, he took a conservative approach by keeping his money in the bank. The annual interest he accrued was more than what an average person could make in several years.Levi knocked on the door and entered only after receiving River’s permission.“Levi, you’re here.”Seeing it was Levi, River stood up to greet him.As soon as Levi entered, he caught the aroma of the soup. He walked over and said with a smile, “This soup smells even better than the one Adina makes.”River replied honestly, “It is.”The two had a good relationship, and sometimes Le

“I won’t let you fight alone. As long as we get married, I will protect you, love you, and cherish you for the rest of our lives.”Rosalie withdrew her hand. “A lifetime is very long. Anything said now is just empty words.“I’m heading back to work. You should go finish your soup. There’s no need to see me out.”Before leaving, she gave his cheek another gentle pinch. It felt pretty nice.Well, she had touched it multiple times when she was drunk last time and had thought it felt good then, too.She had even kissed him.Rosalie had no recollection of that night and did not know what it felt like to kiss him. Maybe someday, given the chance, she could jog her memory and see what it was like to taste such a handsome man.At the elevator, Rosalie ran into Levi.“The sun must be rising from the west today. I actually get to see Mr. Garcia in the flesh,” Rosalie teased without holding back.Levi had a good sense of humor and did not mind her teasing at all. Instead, he laughed hea

“Wow, he really dotes on me. I’ll definitely take good care of him in the future. And besides, whether or not it was your idea, you brought it over, so I’ll consider it your love and care.”River did not care whether she personally prepared the soup. As long as she delivered it herself, even if it were just plain water, he would be happy.“Have you had any?” he asked.Rosalie replied, “I had breakfast before heading out, so of course I’ve had some. You go ahead and drink it. Let me know how it tastes.”“Then I’ll help myself.”Rosalie hummed in agreement, urging him to drink it quickly.Watching River savor the soup with such relish, Rosalie could not help but tease him, “Do you not usually have soup? You make it seem like you’re drinking ambrosia or something.”“I do usually have soup, but since you’ve brought this for me, it tastes especially good.”Rosalie laughed. “I didn’t make it myself, though.“Grandpa said you gave me a gift and I should return the kindness. The overtime pay was extremely generous. “What’s cooking in the kitchen? It smells great.”The butler smiled. “Old Mr. Lafayette asked me to prepare some nourishing soup early in the morning. He said you’ll be delivering it to Mr. York later.”Rosalie was speechless.“Is there a lot of soup? I also want some. Damian and I also need some nourishment after how hard we’ve been working these days.”The butler laughed. “Don’t worry. There’s definitely enough for you and Mr. Damian.”Only then did Rosalie go for her morning run with a satisfied heart. An hour later, she got into her car begrudgingly with a vacuum-insulated flask in hand. She placed it on the passenger seat. Alrick had followed her out. He reminded her, “Don’t spill the soup. Remember to deliver it to my grandson-in-law and only head to the office after you watch him finish it. Remember to wash the flask too.”“You’ve said this many times, Grandpa. I might even get blisters from hearing it too much. You’re already

Alrick tapped Rosalie’s forehead. He said, “It doesn’t have to be a present. You can get the butler to cook something and bring it over to River.“Showing your care through small things in life is more useful than giving a present.”Rosalie thought about it and said, “I’ll try it out one day.“It’s late, Grandpa. I’ll help you return to your room to rest.”Alrick nodded. Rosalie supported him as they walked back to his room. She even said, “You can just give me a call for a small matter like this in the future. You don’t have to wait for me.”“This isn’t a small matter. It concerns your marriage and happiness.“I’ll be at ease after you and Damian build your own families. Your cousins are easier to handle than you two. Some of them are even already dating, so I don’t have to worry as much.“Only you and Damian are stubborn and single till now. That’s why your younger cousins aren’t in a rush to get married either.”One of Alrick’s grandsons had already been dating his girlfri
