Chapter 1

Wiltspoon’s hot weather in October was a killer. Still, the mornings and evenings were eased by the late autumn breeze.

Serenity Hunt got up first thing in the morning to make breakfast for her sister’s family of three. She then grabbed her birth certificate and slipped away in the silence.

“We’re going Dutch from now on, and I’m talking about everything—the living expenses, the mortgage, and auto loans! Your sister should be splitting the cost since she’s staying at our place. Sure, she pays two thousand bucks a month, but it doesn’t stretch very far. She’s basically mooching off us.”

Serenity overheard her brother-in-law’s comment during the couple’s argument last night.

She had to move out of her sister’s place.

However, there was only one way to put her sister’s mind to rest, and that was to get married.

Since Serenity wanted to tie the knot on short notice without ever having had a boyfriend, she decided to take up on Grandma May’s offer. Serenity had saved the old lady by chance and came to know that Grandma May was trying to marry off her grandson, Zachary York, who had trouble settling down.

Twenty minutes later, Serenity got off to her pit stop at City Hall.

“Serenity.”

A familiar voice summoned her attention the moment she got out of the car. It was Grandma May.

“Grandma May.”

As Serenity hurried over, she took notice of a towering yet distant figure standing next to Grandma May. He must be Zachary, her husband-to-be.

At a closer distance, Serenity was dumbstruck after getting a load of Zachary’s face.

According to Grandma May, her eldest grandson, Zachary had no luck with the ladies despite hitting thirty. Needless to say, Grandma May was worried sick.

Serenity had always assumed that he must be hideous.

After all, she heard that Zachary had a high-paying job up the corporate ladder in a major group.

Now that they had met face-to-face, Serenity realized that she had gotten it all wrong.

Zachary was attractive and carried himself with an air of aloofness. Standing next to Grandma May with a sour face, he appeared standoffish and gave off vibes to stay away from him.

Serenity’s gaze strayed to a black MPV parked nearby. Judging by the logo, it was a national car rather than some multimillion-dollar vehicle. Serenity deduced that the economic difference between her and Zachary was not that far off.

She and an old friend from school had started a bookshop at the entrance of Wiltspoon School.

During her free time, Serenity would also knit little knick-knacks to sell online. The sales were not too bad.

In a month, she could bring home a steady income of twenty thousand dollars. The same amount in Wiltspoon would position her among the white collars. That was why she could afford to hand her sister five thousand bucks for living expenses.

Nevertheless, her brother-in-law had no clue about her earnings. Serenity told her sister to pocket three thousand bucks and only disclose the remaining two thousand to her husband.

“Serenity, this is my oldest grandson, Zachary. He’s a thirty-year-old man and can’t even get himself out there. Although he’s not the warmest person, he’s attentive and considerate. You saved my life, and we’ve known each other for three months. Trust me that I won’t recommend a bad man to you.”

Taking in his nana's description of him, Zachary looked askance at Serenity, icily and profoundly without saying a word.

Perhaps he had grown immune to her grumbles.

Serenity knew that Grandma May had three sons, and each gave her three grandsons, blessing her with nine grandsons. Since a granddaughter was missing in Grandma May’s life, she sought that affinity with Serenity.

Although blushing, Serenity openly extended her right hand to Zachary and introduced herself with a smile, “Hello, Mr. York. I’m Serenity Hunt.”

Zachary’s penetrating gaze scanned Serenity from head to toe and back. With Nana clearing her throat, he reached out his right hand for a shake, albeit his voice reflected an icy tone. “Zachary.”

After the handshake, Zachary raised his left hand to look at the time before informing Serenity. “I’m a busy man. Let’s get it done and over with.”

Serenity hummed in acknowledgment.

Grandma May jumped in. “Go on inside to sort out the paperwork. I’ll wait for you here.”

“Nana, get into the car. It’s a hot day out.”

Zachary said as he helped Nana into the car.

Through his actions, Serenity was able to agree with Grandma May’s statement that Zachary might be callous, but his heart was in the right place.

Although they were strangers, Grandma May mentioned that Serenity could move out of her sister’s place into an apartment Zachary owned and paid for in full after the marriage. It could reassure her sister that Serenity was in good hands and end the arguments in the apartment because of her.

It was only a marriage of convenience.

Soon, Zachary returned to Serenity’s side and uttered, “Let’s go.”

“Sure.” Serenity quietly followed him into City Hall.

At the registry office, Zachary urged Serenity. “Ms. Hunt, you can still change your mind if you don’t want to go through with this. It doesn’t matter what my Nana says. Marriage is a huge commitment, not to be taken lightly.”

He was hoping Serenity had second thoughts because he had no intention of marrying a woman he had just met.

“But, most likely, I can’t accompany you and Jayden there. I’m too busy with the company and can’t take time off.”Laurent said apologetically, “I’ll make the arrangements. Jane will meet you and Jayden there.”Suzy was sad. “Jayden was hoping you could play with him for a few days. The summer vacation is long. You should try to make some time.“It’s okay if you can’t go to Wiltspoon. I’ll bring Jayden there, and maybe he can make a few friends there.”“I’m sorry, Suzy.”Laurent held his wife’s hand. “I’m too busy and hardly have time to be with you and Jayden.“I blame my dad for retiring too soon. Other people’s fathers retire when they’re eighty, but my dad left the company when he wasn’t even fifty. I had to take over the family and company matters.“He brings my mom to travel and doesn’t even come back home more than twice a year. I think he’s scared that I might make him work at the company.”Laurent complained about his father’s early retirement and was now traveling wit

Although Laurent and Jane were twins, Jane had been kidnapped when she was six months old. Laurent had grown up lonely. By the time he found her over twenty years later, they had already missed the period when they could grow up together. Since Laurent had a lonely childhood, he did not want Jayden to have the same experience. Therefore, he was already discussing trying for a second baby with his wife. The gender of the second child did not matter. He simply wanted Jayden to have a sibling. River smiled. “It’s only natural to dote on our children.”“Have some fruit, River.”Suzy served River some fruits. She said, “I won’t be serving desserts because we’ll be having dinner soon. I’m scared you won’t be able to eat dinner after having desserts.”River took some fruits. He did not like sweet things anyway. He could eat desserts if they were served to him, but he did not mind if there were not any either. After they chatted for some time, Rosalie finally arrived. When Rive

Most parents would feel happier receiving compliments about their children than themselves. Laurent grinned. “Your nephews are still young, while mine isn’t. Jayden is four years old and has been attending preschool for two years. He has learned many things.“He’d come back home and tell us that his teacher said they should do things themselves. He started doing what he could on his own and only came to us for help when he couldn’t manage.“He’s playing outside now. I’ll ask him to greet you when he gets tired and comes back.”River smiled. “It’s okay. Jayden can play to his heart’s content. That’s what childhood is all about. In the future, he’ll feel happy whenever he recalls his childhood. There’s no need to register them in too many hobby classes when they’re still in preschool.“Although my sisters-in-law had registered their children in hobby classes, they would have the kids pick one or two of their favorite classes to attend instead of going to too many classes.”“We do

“She’s been busy with work since she arrived in Meadspring. I couldn’t be of help, so I came to visit you first.”Laurent got interested. He asked, “Aren’t you both business competitors?”He had received a call from Suzy saying that the seventh young master of the York family from Wiltspoon would be visiting. Therefore, he had someone investigate River’s latest information urgently. That was how he knew River and Rosalie were competitors in Solville. It would be inappropriate to dig further, as he had some ties with the Yorks, so he only knew general information that the people of Solville were also aware of. “We’re only competitors in business, not in life. Our relationship can change.”River smiled. “To be honest, Rosalie and I admire each other a lot outside of business. It’s rare to meet someone so compatible with me.“I don’t want to give her up. Crest Co. is trying to venture into a new direction. No one will be enemies forever in the business world.”Laurent understood

Laurent entered.River told Rosalie, “The head of the Lafayette family is back. I’ll need to hang up now.”“Okay. I’m almost done with my work and can head over soon.”They ended the call.Just as River was standing and putting his phone back into his pocket, Laurent came to him.“Hi, Mr. Lafayette.”River greeted him with a smile.Laurent returned the smile and said, “You must be River York. You resemble Zachary.”Since River’s and Zachary’s fathers looked alike, it was no surprise that the York cousins would bear some resemblance to each other.River replied, “I do share similar features with my cousins. We’re related by blood after all.”The York brothers shared the same paternal grandparents and had a close relationship with each other.Laurent shook River’s hand and invited him to take a seat. Meanwhile, he took off his black suit jacket and handed it to Suzy.Suzy left after taking it.Moments later, she returned with a cup of tea for her husband.“Have a nice chat

“Are Connor and Chloe having a good time at Wildridge Manor? It's been a while since I last saw them,” Suzy asked about her niece and nephew.Without waiting for River's reply, she continued, “Originally, Jane planned to bring the children back right after summer vacation started, but Laurence and your eldest sister-in-law's nephew—that child is called Sonny, right?“They’d promised to meet during this holiday, and Jane has always respected the children's decisions. Since Laurence wanted to go to Wildridge Manor first, they decided to go there before coming back.”River apologetically said, “I haven’t been home much as I’ve been in Solville all along, too busy with work. I only go back during the Christmas holiday. But I imagine the children are all having a great time.“All six of my older brothers have brought their children back to our ancestral home. The manor is liveliest during winter and summer vacations.”Suzy smiled. “It’s a good thing Old Mrs. York is so tolerant. Small
