Chapter 1

Wiltspoon’s hot weather in October was a killer. Still, the mornings and evenings were eased by the late autumn breeze.

Serenity Hunt got up first thing in the morning to make breakfast for her sister’s family of three. She then grabbed her birth certificate and slipped away in the silence.

“We’re going Dutch from now on, and I’m talking about everything—the living expenses, the mortgage, and auto loans! Your sister should be splitting the cost since she’s staying at our place. Sure, she pays two thousand bucks a month, but it doesn’t stretch very far. She’s basically mooching off us.”

Serenity overheard her brother-in-law’s comment during the couple’s argument last night.

She had to move out of her sister’s place.

However, there was only one way to put her sister’s mind to rest, and that was to get married.

Since Serenity wanted to tie the knot on short notice without ever having had a boyfriend, she decided to take up on Grandma May’s offer. Serenity had saved the old lady by chance and came to know that Grandma May was trying to marry off her grandson, Zachary York, who had trouble settling down.

Twenty minutes later, Serenity got off to her pit stop at City Hall.

“Serenity.”

A familiar voice summoned her attention the moment she got out of the car. It was Grandma May.

“Grandma May.”

As Serenity hurried over, she took notice of a towering yet distant figure standing next to Grandma May. He must be Zachary, her husband-to-be.

At a closer distance, Serenity was dumbstruck after getting a load of Zachary’s face.

According to Grandma May, her eldest grandson, Zachary had no luck with the ladies despite hitting thirty. Needless to say, Grandma May was worried sick.

Serenity had always assumed that he must be hideous.

After all, she heard that Zachary had a high-paying job up the corporate ladder in a major group.

Now that they had met face-to-face, Serenity realized that she had gotten it all wrong.

Zachary was attractive and carried himself with an air of aloofness. Standing next to Grandma May with a sour face, he appeared standoffish and gave off vibes to stay away from him.

Serenity’s gaze strayed to a black MPV parked nearby. Judging by the logo, it was a national car rather than some multimillion-dollar vehicle. Serenity deduced that the economic difference between her and Zachary was not that far off.

She and an old friend from school had started a bookshop at the entrance of Wiltspoon School.

During her free time, Serenity would also knit little knick-knacks to sell online. The sales were not too bad.

In a month, she could bring home a steady income of twenty thousand dollars. The same amount in Wiltspoon would position her among the white collars. That was why she could afford to hand her sister five thousand bucks for living expenses.

Nevertheless, her brother-in-law had no clue about her earnings. Serenity told her sister to pocket three thousand bucks and only disclose the remaining two thousand to her husband.

“Serenity, this is my oldest grandson, Zachary. He’s a thirty-year-old man and can’t even get himself out there. Although he’s not the warmest person, he’s attentive and considerate. You saved my life, and we’ve known each other for three months. Trust me that I won’t recommend a bad man to you.”

Taking in his nana's description of him, Zachary looked askance at Serenity, icily and profoundly without saying a word.

Perhaps he had grown immune to her grumbles.

Serenity knew that Grandma May had three sons, and each gave her three grandsons, blessing her with nine grandsons. Since a granddaughter was missing in Grandma May’s life, she sought that affinity with Serenity.

Although blushing, Serenity openly extended her right hand to Zachary and introduced herself with a smile, “Hello, Mr. York. I’m Serenity Hunt.”

Zachary’s penetrating gaze scanned Serenity from head to toe and back. With Nana clearing her throat, he reached out his right hand for a shake, albeit his voice reflected an icy tone. “Zachary.”

After the handshake, Zachary raised his left hand to look at the time before informing Serenity. “I’m a busy man. Let’s get it done and over with.”

Serenity hummed in acknowledgment.

Grandma May jumped in. “Go on inside to sort out the paperwork. I’ll wait for you here.”

“Nana, get into the car. It’s a hot day out.”

Zachary said as he helped Nana into the car.

Through his actions, Serenity was able to agree with Grandma May’s statement that Zachary might be callous, but his heart was in the right place.

Although they were strangers, Grandma May mentioned that Serenity could move out of her sister’s place into an apartment Zachary owned and paid for in full after the marriage. It could reassure her sister that Serenity was in good hands and end the arguments in the apartment because of her.

It was only a marriage of convenience.

Soon, Zachary returned to Serenity’s side and uttered, “Let’s go.”

“Sure.” Serenity quietly followed him into City Hall.

At the registry office, Zachary urged Serenity. “Ms. Hunt, you can still change your mind if you don’t want to go through with this. It doesn’t matter what my Nana says. Marriage is a huge commitment, not to be taken lightly.”

He was hoping Serenity had second thoughts because he had no intention of marrying a woman he had just met.

Liberty now wanted for nothing. She had money, power, and love. She had won Duncan’s devotion and had managed to marry into a wealthy family despite being a divorcee. She was truly blessed. On top of that, the Lewises had even accepted her son Sonny and treated him as one of their own.“Jessica, let’s stop envying others. Everyone has a different path to walk. Envy won’t change ours, and it’ll only foster jealousy, which easily drives people crazy.“Let’s just live simply. As long as we can feed and clothe ourselves, it’s enough.“If you manage to get out early on a reduced sentence, we might be able to have another child. The three of us can live a good life together, then.”Jessica laughed, but as she did so, tears streamed from her eyes.“I don’t even dare dream of having another child. By the time I get out, I’ll be in my forties. What’s the point of having another kid then? I’m grateful enough that you don’t despise me.“I don’t think I’ll have a kid of my own in this lifet

After a moment of silence, Hank said to Jessica, “What’s past is past. Let’s put it behind us and look forward.”Jessica nodded tearfully. “Hank, you have to take care of yourself out there. You look so much older now. You’ve been working too hard.”She knew Hank was still driving for a ride-hailing service, barely scraping by each month. It was nothing compared to his former salary as an office manager. If they had not made those terrible mistakes, perhaps Hank could have climbed even higher in his career, achieving greater success. Then again, Jessica thought with resignation, Hank had already grown tired of his wife Liberty back then. Liberty had changed too much after childbirth. Even if he had not cheated with her, he would have cheated with someone else. It was not entirely her fault.Perhaps they were both to blame, both guilty of wanting too much. The fate they suffered now was nothing they did not deserve.Hank smiled faintly. “It’s tiring, but it’s fine. I can handle it

For Sonny’s sake, they were willing to tolerate Hank.Besides, Hank had improved a lot compared to a few years ago. At least now, he genuinely cared for Sonny, unlike before when he would only play with the child superficially without investing any real affection.Having faced life-threatening situations and lost too much, he regretted a lot of things and had finally learned to cherish what he had.The price he paid for that lesson, however, had been far too high.Hank retrieved the supplements he had bought the day before from his car and handed them to Zachary.“You’ve taken such good care of Sonny. I really can’t thank you enough,” Hank said gratefully.Zachary replied indifferently, “Liberty entrusted Sonny to us. Of course, we’d look after him well.“You don’t need to worry about Sonny. Just focus on your work. Be careful when driving, and if you’re tired, take a break. Don’t push yourself too hard.”Hank still paid child support for Sonny on time. Now, the money he earned

Meanwhile, Zachary was dropping Sonny off at preschool when they ran into Hank at the school gate.Hank had just dropped off a passenger nearby. Afterwards, he decided to stop taking ride requests temporarily and parked his car there to wait for Zachary to drop Sonny off. Ever since Serenity gave birth, Zachary had been the one taking Sonny to school, and Hank had figured out their schedule.“Mr. York, Sonny!” After waiting for a while, Hank called out excitedly when he saw his son quickly walking toward them.Sonny was equally happy.Zachary, who had been holding his hand, let go at the right moment.Sonny immediately ran toward his father.Hank picked him up and planted kisses all over his face.Hugging his father’s neck, Sonny asked cheerfully, “Dad, why are you here? Were you waiting for me?”Hank smiled. “Yeah, I was waiting for you.”“Dad.”“Hmm?”“My little cousin is so cute.”“Oh? You have to be good to him, okay?”Sonny nodded firmly. “Of course! He’s my little co

She did not want her son to become a privileged brat. Of course, Serenity did not say this out loud and kept her thoughts to herself.“Are you done eating, Seren? Was it filling enough? Did you enjoy breakfast today?” Grandma May asked kindly. As Serenity walked over to her, she even stood up to offer Serenity her seat.Serenity quickly hurried forward to press Grandma May back into the seat.“Yes, I’m full. The food at home suits my taste perfectly. My appetite is even better now than before, Nana. I’ve always been a foodie, but now I can eat even more. I’m actually worried I’ll be ten pounds heavier by the time I’m out of maternity leave.”Grandma May laughed. “You’re getting hungry faster than before and eating more because you have to breastfeed Heath. You won’t gain that much weight. Once you’re allowed to exercise again, you’ll quickly regain your slim figure.”Tania chimed in, “If you’re worried about gaining weight, I’ll make sure Zack eats more too so that he gets heavier

“What’s there to thank me for? You’ve been married to Liam for decades and we’re just like mother and daughter now. If anything, I should be thanking you for giving me two wonderful grandsons. And now, I’ve even become a great-grandmother.”Grandma May patted Tania’s hand and said, “You and Liam just have to take good care of yourselves and stay healthy, and just sit back and enjoy the blessings of your children and grandchildren. By the time you reach my age, you’ll have a house full of descendants too.”Tania laughed. “If I live long enough to become a great-grandmother, I’d wake up from my dreams laughing.”“Why not? You could live well into your eighties or even nineties. Look at Mr. Foster. He’s almost a hundred years old and still going strong. Now that he’s living with Audrey, he seems even more spirited. Who knows? He might make it past a hundred.“It’s because he’s happy now. All his worries are behind him, and he can just focus on doting on the kids. Zack and Austin are b
