Chapter 1

Author: Gu Lingfei
Wiltspoon’s hot weather in October was a killer. Still, the mornings and evenings were eased by the late autumn breeze.

Serenity Hunt got up first thing in the morning to make breakfast for her sister’s family of three. She then grabbed her birth certificate and slipped away in the silence.

“We’re going Dutch from now on, and I’m talking about everything—the living expenses, the mortgage, and auto loans! Your sister should be splitting the cost since she’s staying at our place. Sure, she pays two thousand bucks a month, but it doesn’t stretch very far. She’s basically mooching off us.”

Serenity overheard her brother-in-law’s comment during the couple’s argument last night.

She had to move out of her sister’s place.

However, there was only one way to put her sister’s mind to rest, and that was to get married.

Since Serenity wanted to tie the knot on short notice without ever having had a boyfriend, she decided to take up on Grandma May’s offer. Serenity had saved the old lady by chance and came to know that Grandma May was trying to marry off her grandson, Zachary York, who had trouble settling down.

Twenty minutes later, Serenity got off to her pit stop at City Hall.

“Serenity.”

A familiar voice summoned her attention the moment she got out of the car. It was Grandma May.

“Grandma May.”

As Serenity hurried over, she took notice of a towering yet distant figure standing next to Grandma May. He must be Zachary, her husband-to-be.

At a closer distance, Serenity was dumbstruck after getting a load of Zachary’s face.

According to Grandma May, her eldest grandson, Zachary had no luck with the ladies despite hitting thirty. Needless to say, Grandma May was worried sick.

Serenity had always assumed that he must be hideous.

After all, she heard that Zachary had a high-paying job up the corporate ladder in a major group.

Now that they had met face-to-face, Serenity realized that she had gotten it all wrong.

Zachary was attractive and carried himself with an air of aloofness. Standing next to Grandma May with a sour face, he appeared standoffish and gave off vibes to stay away from him.

Serenity’s gaze strayed to a black MPV parked nearby. Judging by the logo, it was a national car rather than some multimillion-dollar vehicle. Serenity deduced that the economic difference between her and Zachary was not that far off.

She and an old friend from school had started a bookshop at the entrance of Wiltspoon School.

During her free time, Serenity would also knit little knick-knacks to sell online. The sales were not too bad.

In a month, she could bring home a steady income of twenty thousand dollars. The same amount in Wiltspoon would position her among the white collars. That was why she could afford to hand her sister five thousand bucks for living expenses.

Nevertheless, her brother-in-law had no clue about her earnings. Serenity told her sister to pocket three thousand bucks and only disclose the remaining two thousand to her husband.

“Serenity, this is my oldest grandson, Zachary. He’s a thirty-year-old man and can’t even get himself out there. Although he’s not the warmest person, he’s attentive and considerate. You saved my life, and we’ve known each other for three months. Trust me that I won’t recommend a bad man to you.”

Taking in his nana's description of him, Zachary looked askance at Serenity, icily and profoundly without saying a word.

Perhaps he had grown immune to her grumbles.

Serenity knew that Grandma May had three sons, and each gave her three grandsons, blessing her with nine grandsons. Since a granddaughter was missing in Grandma May’s life, she sought that affinity with Serenity.

Although blushing, Serenity openly extended her right hand to Zachary and introduced herself with a smile, “Hello, Mr. York. I’m Serenity Hunt.”

Zachary’s penetrating gaze scanned Serenity from head to toe and back. With Nana clearing her throat, he reached out his right hand for a shake, albeit his voice reflected an icy tone. “Zachary.”

After the handshake, Zachary raised his left hand to look at the time before informing Serenity. “I’m a busy man. Let’s get it done and over with.”

Serenity hummed in acknowledgment.

Grandma May jumped in. “Go on inside to sort out the paperwork. I’ll wait for you here.”

“Nana, get into the car. It’s a hot day out.”

Zachary said as he helped Nana into the car.

Through his actions, Serenity was able to agree with Grandma May’s statement that Zachary might be callous, but his heart was in the right place.

Although they were strangers, Grandma May mentioned that Serenity could move out of her sister’s place into an apartment Zachary owned and paid for in full after the marriage. It could reassure her sister that Serenity was in good hands and end the arguments in the apartment because of her.

It was only a marriage of convenience.

Soon, Zachary returned to Serenity’s side and uttered, “Let’s go.”

“Sure.” Serenity quietly followed him into City Hall.

At the registry office, Zachary urged Serenity. “Ms. Hunt, you can still change your mind if you don’t want to go through with this. It doesn’t matter what my Nana says. Marriage is a huge commitment, not to be taken lightly.”

He was hoping Serenity had second thoughts because he had no intention of marrying a woman he had just met.

He was a love rival, a man trying to steal his future wife. Of course, he was not going to be generous.Dr. Levitt thought for a moment and said, “There’s a milk tea shop up ahead. Let’s go there to sit and talk.”“Alright, Dr. Levitt, lead the way.”“Where’s your car? Don’t you usually drive around in a luxury car to show off?” Dr. Levitt asked sarcastically.“Why are you riding an e-bike tonight? And it doesn’t even have a license plate. It’s newly bought, isn’t it?”Alex said, “The luxury car I usually drive belongs to my sister-in-law. I borrowed it to get a taste of driving a luxury car.“Don’t you think riding an e-bike is much more convenient in the city? There’s no shame in riding one. As long as it gets you around easily, it’s just a means of transportation.”His love rival still did not know his true identity. He seemed to look down on him, thinking he was just a freeloader relying on his cousin and his cousin’s wife.Alex simply lied, claiming the luxury car he usua

Alex’s gaze followed Sheila until she was out of sight. Only then did he withdraw his gaze.Marvin and Enid pretended not to notice. The three of them chatted for a while longer before Alex said his goodbyes and left.“I think Alex is truly sincere about our Sheila. Why won’t he confess?” Enid questioned rather impatiently. She wished she could confess to Sheila on Alex’s behalf.Marvin said, “They haven’t known each other for very long. Alex probably hasn’t done it out of consideration that Sheila doesn’t know him well enough yet. If he confesses now, he might end up with the same result as Kent.“That guy is shrewd. He creates all kinds of ‘chance’ encounters every day. No matter where Sheila goes, she always runs into him. He’s keeping a close watch, integrating himself into Sheila’s life, bit by bit.“Like slowly boiling a frog, Sheila will fall for him.”Marvin continued, “Based on your analysis, it does seem that Alex is more suitable for Sheila. As for the York family, o

Only she herself knew how difficult and painful that period was.She did not want to suffer another heartbreak. The Yorks were a wealthy family with billions in assets. Even though everyone said the York family had good values, and the elders were open-minded, Sheila did not dare entertain the thought. She always felt that she and Alex were from two different worlds. She studied medicine, while he ran a company and did business. They moved in different circles, had different sorts of social interactions, and had different topics of conversation.During the honeymoon phase of a relationship, one might not care and think that everything could be overcome. However, after marriage, once reality set in, they would realize they were fundamentally incompatible because they lacked common ground. He would not understand the medical topics she would chatter on about. She would not get the business matters he talked about either.Given his status and position, he would inevitably have soc

Marvin glanced at Enid, then at Alex. Enid looked straight at Alex before saying to her niece, “Dr. Levitt must have misunderstood your relationship with Alex. He thinks you don’t accept his feelings because of Alex, doesn’t he?“Because Alex is more handsome than he is, comes from a better family, is very capable, and is earning more money than he is, too. He can’t compare to him, so he’s placed all the blame for your not loving him on Alex.”Sheila laughed awkwardly as she looked at Alex before saying to him apologetically, “Sorry, Alex. It’s my fault Kent has misunderstood you.“I’ve already explained everything clearly, but he still doesn’t believe it.”“Sheila, since Dr. Levitt has misunderstood your relationship with Alex, you guys should just pretend to be in a relationship to make him give up once and for all and embark on a new romance. Then, he’ll finally stop bothering you.“That way, there’s no need to become enemies. Of course, if he minds that you’re with Alex and wa

It tasted as bitter as his emotions at that moment. The words Sheila spoke before she left meant she had guessed what he and Mary had done the night before. She probably knew something through Mary as well. Kent did touch Mary. Although they did not cross the final line, he had touched and kissed her, taking full advantage.Sheila was particular about purity. Since he had touched other women, she would never accept him.Why did he have to drink alcohol? If he were not drunk, he would not have mistaken Mary for Sheila.Kent utterly regretted it.Sheila rode home. The Joneses’ family clinic shutters were almost fully closed. Only the doors in the middle were accessible. Light was pouring out of it, so Marvin was probably still on the first floor. There was a new e-bike parked outside. Sheila thought it looked familiar, like the one Alex had been riding earlier. As expected, she heard Alex’s voice inside. He was saying something, which made her aunt and uncle laugh merrily.S

“There’s nothing more than that. If you insist on putting a label on us, we’re just neighbors and ordinary friends.”Kent laughed dryly. “I’m a man, Sheila. Men understand each other well. The way Alex looks at you isn’t normal. He’s definitely interested in you.“I suspect that he bought the unit above yours to be your neighbor on purpose and get closer to you.”Units at Westbrooke Gardens were not cheap, yet Alex was able to secure one easily and even paid for it in full. Moreover, it was a penthouse.Kent did not know whether it was Alex’s money or if he had gotten it from his cousin or his cousin’s wife. His cousin’s wife owned all the stores on Westbrooke Street. The rent she received monthly was enough to buy a house at Westbrooke Gardens.“You’re overthinking it, Kent. Alex really isn’t who you describe him to be.“Let’s not involve other people in this, Kent. I’m speaking from the bottom of my heart. I hope you can give it some thought.“Uncle Marvin treats you as his
