Chapter 1

Wiltspoon’s hot weather in October was a killer. Still, the mornings and evenings were eased by the late autumn breeze.

Serenity Hunt got up first thing in the morning to make breakfast for her sister’s family of three. She then grabbed her birth certificate and slipped away in the silence.

“We’re going Dutch from now on, and I’m talking about everything—the living expenses, the mortgage, and auto loans! Your sister should be splitting the cost since she’s staying at our place. Sure, she pays two thousand bucks a month, but it doesn’t stretch very far. She’s basically mooching off us.”

Serenity overheard her brother-in-law’s comment during the couple’s argument last night.

She had to move out of her sister’s place.

However, there was only one way to put her sister’s mind to rest, and that was to get married.

Since Serenity wanted to tie the knot on short notice without ever having had a boyfriend, she decided to take up on Grandma May’s offer. Serenity had saved the old lady by chance and came to know that Grandma May was trying to marry off her grandson, Zachary York, who had trouble settling down.

Twenty minutes later, Serenity got off to her pit stop at City Hall.

“Serenity.”

A familiar voice summoned her attention the moment she got out of the car. It was Grandma May.

“Grandma May.”

As Serenity hurried over, she took notice of a towering yet distant figure standing next to Grandma May. He must be Zachary, her husband-to-be.

At a closer distance, Serenity was dumbstruck after getting a load of Zachary’s face.

According to Grandma May, her eldest grandson, Zachary had no luck with the ladies despite hitting thirty. Needless to say, Grandma May was worried sick.

Serenity had always assumed that he must be hideous.

After all, she heard that Zachary had a high-paying job up the corporate ladder in a major group.

Now that they had met face-to-face, Serenity realized that she had gotten it all wrong.

Zachary was attractive and carried himself with an air of aloofness. Standing next to Grandma May with a sour face, he appeared standoffish and gave off vibes to stay away from him.

Serenity’s gaze strayed to a black MPV parked nearby. Judging by the logo, it was a national car rather than some multimillion-dollar vehicle. Serenity deduced that the economic difference between her and Zachary was not that far off.

She and an old friend from school had started a bookshop at the entrance of Wiltspoon School.

During her free time, Serenity would also knit little knick-knacks to sell online. The sales were not too bad.

In a month, she could bring home a steady income of twenty thousand dollars. The same amount in Wiltspoon would position her among the white collars. That was why she could afford to hand her sister five thousand bucks for living expenses.

Nevertheless, her brother-in-law had no clue about her earnings. Serenity told her sister to pocket three thousand bucks and only disclose the remaining two thousand to her husband.

“Serenity, this is my oldest grandson, Zachary. He’s a thirty-year-old man and can’t even get himself out there. Although he’s not the warmest person, he’s attentive and considerate. You saved my life, and we’ve known each other for three months. Trust me that I won’t recommend a bad man to you.”

Taking in his nana's description of him, Zachary looked askance at Serenity, icily and profoundly without saying a word.

Perhaps he had grown immune to her grumbles.

Serenity knew that Grandma May had three sons, and each gave her three grandsons, blessing her with nine grandsons. Since a granddaughter was missing in Grandma May’s life, she sought that affinity with Serenity.

Although blushing, Serenity openly extended her right hand to Zachary and introduced herself with a smile, “Hello, Mr. York. I’m Serenity Hunt.”

Zachary’s penetrating gaze scanned Serenity from head to toe and back. With Nana clearing her throat, he reached out his right hand for a shake, albeit his voice reflected an icy tone. “Zachary.”

After the handshake, Zachary raised his left hand to look at the time before informing Serenity. “I’m a busy man. Let’s get it done and over with.”

Serenity hummed in acknowledgment.

Grandma May jumped in. “Go on inside to sort out the paperwork. I’ll wait for you here.”

“Nana, get into the car. It’s a hot day out.”

Zachary said as he helped Nana into the car.

Through his actions, Serenity was able to agree with Grandma May’s statement that Zachary might be callous, but his heart was in the right place.

Although they were strangers, Grandma May mentioned that Serenity could move out of her sister’s place into an apartment Zachary owned and paid for in full after the marriage. It could reassure her sister that Serenity was in good hands and end the arguments in the apartment because of her.

It was only a marriage of convenience.

Soon, Zachary returned to Serenity’s side and uttered, “Let’s go.”

“Sure.” Serenity quietly followed him into City Hall.

At the registry office, Zachary urged Serenity. “Ms. Hunt, you can still change your mind if you don’t want to go through with this. It doesn’t matter what my Nana says. Marriage is a huge commitment, not to be taken lightly.”

He was hoping Serenity had second thoughts because he had no intention of marrying a woman he had just met.

“Just give up. Please stop sending me flowers and gifts. I won’t accept them.“If you’ve been coming here for my sake, I’d rather you didn’t in the future. If you’re here to consult with my uncle, that’s your business, but I won’t be entertaining you. Who I marry is my own decision. No elder in my family, whoever they may be, can decide for me.”Essentially, she was telling Kent to stop trying to win over her uncle and aunt. It was useless to cozy up to them. They were only her uncle and aunt, not her parents.Even her own parents could not force her to date or marry someone.Though her parents and older brother occasionally urged her to start a relationship, they had also made it clear that it was her choice. They would offer their opinion, but the final decision rested with her.Kent looked at her.His eyes held a pleading expression. He reached out, wanting to take Sheila’s hand, but she avoided him.“Sheila, we’ve known each other for so many years. I liked you from the fir

Kent had not accepted her feelings. However, he did not dismiss her either, allowing her to continue working there. Perhaps Kent was keeping her around as his backup plan. That nurse was two years younger than Sheila and had delicate features, a gentle temperament, and a great deal of patience.Patients who had visited Kent’s clinic all spoke highly of her.She had started working at the clinic right after graduation and had been there for several years. She was undoubtedly aware of Kent’s family situation, and the fact that she still loved him deeply meant she could accept his family background. That was why Sheila said they were a better match. She neither loved Kent nor accepted his family situation, and she had no desire to be an enabling doormat for his family to leech off her infinitely.Even if she reluctantly accepted Kent, and if they were to be together, his constant enabling of his family would inevitably lead to arguments over time, and arguments damaged relationships

If they had children in the future, Kent would be able to look after the kids when Sheila was busy.Sadly, Kent’s family would drag him down. His parents, siblings, and even nephews needed his support. No matter how much money he earned, he could not possibly help his entire family and relatives.Enid had heard that the Levitts’ relatives were unreasonable. They would get medicine from Kent without paying. If Kent could not handle their issues, they would demand that he use his connections and make appointments for them in a big hospital. Getting an appointment was a small matter. The scarier thing was if they did not have enough money to pay for the medical fees and needed Kent to pay out of his own pocket.Sheila was working at the best hospital in Wiltspoon. While Kent’s feelings for her were sincere, he also thought her job was favorable to him. It would be easier for him to make arrangements for his relatives to see doctors or get hospitalized in Wiltspoon General Hospital

Sheila pushed the bouquet away. She said apologetically, “I won’t accept your flowers, Kent. You don’t have to buy them for me anymore.”Alex went to stand beside her discreetly. He simply stared at Kent. Kent did not like seeing Alex beside Sheila. They looked good together.“Who’s this, Sheila?”At that moment, Kent no longer treated Alex as a patient. He did not know whether they came together, but they did enter the clinic one after another.Besides, Alex looked like Sheila’s knight as he stood beside her and stared at Kent with a defensive gaze.Sheila turned to look at Alex. She replied, “He used to be my patient.“Please take a seat, Mr. York. I have some private matters to handle. We can head to Westbrooke Gardens to take a look at my house.”Alex said gently, “Okay.”He walked over to greet Marvin and Enid. The patients who were waiting for their turn came to a realization as they watched the scene unfold. After eyeing Alex, a regular asked Enid, “Is this your ni

Dr. Sheila was working at Wiltspoon General Hospital. It was the best hospital in the city. While she was not earning as much as she would have compared to running her own clinic, she was still young. She could work in big hospitals for about ten years and accumulate experience before opening her own clinic. That way, she could gain her patients’ trust.“Dr. Sheila is great. You have a good eye, Dr. Levitt.”That person praised Kent and teased Marvin. He said, “It’s great that your student is becoming your nephew-in-law, Dr. Marvin.”Kent had always sought guidance from Marvin. Although it was unofficial, they could be considered teacher and student.Patients who often went to the Joneses’ family clinic knew about Marvin and Kent’s relationship. Marvin glanced at Kent as he examined the patient’s throat and lungs. He said, “Sheila didn’t accept his confession. They might not get together. It’s okay to mention it in front of me, but please don’t tease my niece.“She’s easily em

“He’ll tell you what materials you need and their quantity. You just have to buy them.”Alex looked grateful. He said, “Since I’m recuperating, I have time to handle the renovation stuff. Decorating my own house gives it a different meaning.”They had arrived at the hospital. Sheila got on her e-bike and only let Alex get on when she was out of the parking lot. The parking lot at the hospital had too many onlookers and was inconvenient. Alex sat behind Sheila on the e-bike. He asked worriedly, “I’m pretty heavy, Dr. Jones. Are you sure you can give me a ride?”“You’re almost the same height and weight as my brother. If he can be my passenger, you can too. I just hope you don’t find this embarrassing.”Alex laughed. “There’s nothing to be embarrassed about.“No one knows who I am. It’s not as if I have a label stuck on my head announcing that I’m a young master of the Yorks.“Besides, riding an e-bike isn’t embarrassing so long as we obey the traffic rules. Any sort of veh
