Chapter 1

Wiltspoon’s hot weather in October was a killer. Still, the mornings and evenings were eased by the late autumn breeze.

Serenity Hunt got up first thing in the morning to make breakfast for her sister’s family of three. She then grabbed her birth certificate and slipped away in the silence.

“We’re going Dutch from now on, and I’m talking about everything—the living expenses, the mortgage, and auto loans! Your sister should be splitting the cost since she’s staying at our place. Sure, she pays two thousand bucks a month, but it doesn’t stretch very far. She’s basically mooching off us.”

Serenity overheard her brother-in-law’s comment during the couple’s argument last night.

She had to move out of her sister’s place.

However, there was only one way to put her sister’s mind to rest, and that was to get married.

Since Serenity wanted to tie the knot on short notice without ever having had a boyfriend, she decided to take up on Grandma May’s offer. Serenity had saved the old lady by chance and came to know that Grandma May was trying to marry off her grandson, Zachary York, who had trouble settling down.

Twenty minutes later, Serenity got off to her pit stop at City Hall.

“Serenity.”

A familiar voice summoned her attention the moment she got out of the car. It was Grandma May.

“Grandma May.”

As Serenity hurried over, she took notice of a towering yet distant figure standing next to Grandma May. He must be Zachary, her husband-to-be.

At a closer distance, Serenity was dumbstruck after getting a load of Zachary’s face.

According to Grandma May, her eldest grandson, Zachary had no luck with the ladies despite hitting thirty. Needless to say, Grandma May was worried sick.

Serenity had always assumed that he must be hideous.

After all, she heard that Zachary had a high-paying job up the corporate ladder in a major group.

Now that they had met face-to-face, Serenity realized that she had gotten it all wrong.

Zachary was attractive and carried himself with an air of aloofness. Standing next to Grandma May with a sour face, he appeared standoffish and gave off vibes to stay away from him.

Serenity’s gaze strayed to a black MPV parked nearby. Judging by the logo, it was a national car rather than some multimillion-dollar vehicle. Serenity deduced that the economic difference between her and Zachary was not that far off.

She and an old friend from school had started a bookshop at the entrance of Wiltspoon School.

During her free time, Serenity would also knit little knick-knacks to sell online. The sales were not too bad.

In a month, she could bring home a steady income of twenty thousand dollars. The same amount in Wiltspoon would position her among the white collars. That was why she could afford to hand her sister five thousand bucks for living expenses.

Nevertheless, her brother-in-law had no clue about her earnings. Serenity told her sister to pocket three thousand bucks and only disclose the remaining two thousand to her husband.

“Serenity, this is my oldest grandson, Zachary. He’s a thirty-year-old man and can’t even get himself out there. Although he’s not the warmest person, he’s attentive and considerate. You saved my life, and we’ve known each other for three months. Trust me that I won’t recommend a bad man to you.”

Taking in his nana's description of him, Zachary looked askance at Serenity, icily and profoundly without saying a word.

Perhaps he had grown immune to her grumbles.

Serenity knew that Grandma May had three sons, and each gave her three grandsons, blessing her with nine grandsons. Since a granddaughter was missing in Grandma May’s life, she sought that affinity with Serenity.

Although blushing, Serenity openly extended her right hand to Zachary and introduced herself with a smile, “Hello, Mr. York. I’m Serenity Hunt.”

Zachary’s penetrating gaze scanned Serenity from head to toe and back. With Nana clearing her throat, he reached out his right hand for a shake, albeit his voice reflected an icy tone. “Zachary.”

After the handshake, Zachary raised his left hand to look at the time before informing Serenity. “I’m a busy man. Let’s get it done and over with.”

Serenity hummed in acknowledgment.

Grandma May jumped in. “Go on inside to sort out the paperwork. I’ll wait for you here.”

“Nana, get into the car. It’s a hot day out.”

Zachary said as he helped Nana into the car.

Through his actions, Serenity was able to agree with Grandma May’s statement that Zachary might be callous, but his heart was in the right place.

Although they were strangers, Grandma May mentioned that Serenity could move out of her sister’s place into an apartment Zachary owned and paid for in full after the marriage. It could reassure her sister that Serenity was in good hands and end the arguments in the apartment because of her.

It was only a marriage of convenience.

Soon, Zachary returned to Serenity’s side and uttered, “Let’s go.”

“Sure.” Serenity quietly followed him into City Hall.

At the registry office, Zachary urged Serenity. “Ms. Hunt, you can still change your mind if you don’t want to go through with this. It doesn’t matter what my Nana says. Marriage is a huge commitment, not to be taken lightly.”

He was hoping Serenity had second thoughts because he had no intention of marrying a woman he had just met.

River twisted open the bottle cap and took a couple of sips of water. He looked at Rosalie, waiting for her to continue.“River, if you become a father in the future, will you be like Laurent? As in, so busy with work that you neglect your child. Seeing Jay like that made me feel a bit sad, and it also reminded me of my own childhood.“Those with backgrounds like ours all have childhoods similar to Jay. Our parents were busy with work. Our vast homes were often only filled with the company of nannies, bodyguards, and drivers.“Oftentimes, we couldn’t even see our parents’ faces. They always had endless work, endless meetings, and endless business trips. Even when they came home, they were constantly answering or making calls.“Occasionally, when we called them, they might not even answer, thinking our calls weren’t important, that answering would be a waste of time.“Even if they did answer, we couldn’t exchange more than a few sentences before they hung up. All they gave us was m

Jayden fell asleep reassured, and even in his sleep, he seemed to be smiling. It showed just how happy he was.Laurent walked in and saw his wife still sitting on the edge of their son’s bed. He approached and asked, “He’s not asleep yet?”“Shh—” Suzy made a shushing gesture at him and said in a low voice, “He just fell asleep. Don’t speak so loudly, or you might wake him. If he wakes up, who knows when he’ll be able to fall back asleep again.“Jay was very happy tonight. Look at him, he seems to be smiling even in his sleep.”Suzy gazed quietly at her sleeping son’s adorable and angelic face.Laurent sat down on the edge of the bed beside her and also looked at their son, reaching out to touch the little boy’s cheek. “Why does it feel like he’s lost a little weight? His face seems a bit smaller.”“It’s been really hot lately, and he usually eats alone. He’s probably been eating less because his appetite hasn’t been that great.”To be honest, Suzy could not really tell if their

Strict teachers produced outstanding students. Laurence grew more excellent by the day precisely because of these strict masters.Suzy smiled and said, “Hurry up and eat now. You have to eat more to grow taller.”Jayden, now sure that Laurence would be coming, was elated and cheerfully continued his dinner. While eating, he asked his mother again, "Then will Sonny be coming too? I’ve never met him before.“Laurence and the others often mention him, but I’ve never met him.”It was not exactly that Jayden’s social circle was small because the younger generation from prominent families in the city often played with him. However, it could not be described as big either, as he did not have many true friends.Of course, as a child, he had yet to grasp what friendship was. It was common to have a fight one day and make up the next.In a nutshell, what he envied most was that his cousins could make friends with so many older children. Right now, his cousins were all having fun in Uncle R

During the meal, Laurent kept putting more food on his son’s plate as a way to try to make it up to him.The little boy’s plate was piled high with the food his father had given him. He finally looked up at his father and protested, “Dad, I can get my own food. I’m really good with the fork and spoon now, and I can serve myself.”He was very capable of taking care of himself. His aunt Jane often praised him, saying he was even more capable than his cousin Connor.Laurent smiled. “Don't you like the food Dad picked for you?”“It’s not that I don’t like it, it’s that you keep putting food on my plate. I can’t eat that fast, and now my plate is full. If you want to give me more food, you should wait until I’ve finished what’s on my plate first.“You should also get food for Mom. We agreed that we’d protect and care for Mom together.”Thus, Dad should not only give him food but also give it to Mom.Suzy affectionately patted her son’s head. “Jay is such a good boy.”Laurent chuckle

However, it was not that surprising after Laurent thought about it again. Jane and River’s sister-in-law, Serenity, were close friends. Their families had a good relationship, and Jane’s family was even staying over at Wildridge Manor at the moment. Jane was his only sister, and Jayden was his only son. It was only natural that Jayden would be close to Jane’s children. Although they could not meet daily, they would still have video calls every other day. The kids must have talked about the York children, in which the adults would also have been mentioned. Perhaps Jayden had developed a good impression of the York brothers after hearing a lot of things from his cousins. Since he had come to trust the York brothers, it was normal that he would reveal his true thoughts to River. Laurent looked toward Jayden, who was already playing with his new toy. Indeed, he rarely accompanied his son ever since he learned how to walk. However, Suzy had been giving Jayden her full attention.

After entering the house, Jayden let go of River’s hand and ran toward Laurent joyfully. “Dad.”“Hey, kiddo,” replied Laurent. He waited till Jayden ran over and lifted him happily. He kissed Jayden’s cheek and said, “I missed you, Jay.”“I missed you more, Dad. I haven’t seen you in a long time. I’m not awake whenever you head out in the morning, and I’m already asleep by the time you’re back.”Laurent smiled. “It hasn’t been that long, only since summer vacation started, because you sleep in a lot. We always head out together when you need to go to school.”To Laurent, it had not been that long, as he did see his son every day. Jayden was nestled in his father’s embrace. He said, “It’s boring to play alone. I don’t wake up early because I don’t want to be bored. If I wake up late, the time when I’m bored will be shorter.”“Are you bored? There are many toys at home, and we even built a playground for you. The nannies can play whatever you want.”Rosalie and River walked ove
