Chapter 1

Wiltspoon’s hot weather in October was a killer. Still, the mornings and evenings were eased by the late autumn breeze.

Serenity Hunt got up first thing in the morning to make breakfast for her sister’s family of three. She then grabbed her birth certificate and slipped away in the silence.

“We’re going Dutch from now on, and I’m talking about everything—the living expenses, the mortgage, and auto loans! Your sister should be splitting the cost since she’s staying at our place. Sure, she pays two thousand bucks a month, but it doesn’t stretch very far. She’s basically mooching off us.”

Serenity overheard her brother-in-law’s comment during the couple’s argument last night.

She had to move out of her sister’s place.

However, there was only one way to put her sister’s mind to rest, and that was to get married.

Since Serenity wanted to tie the knot on short notice without ever having had a boyfriend, she decided to take up on Grandma May’s offer. Serenity had saved the old lady by chance and came to know that Grandma May was trying to marry off her grandson, Zachary York, who had trouble settling down.

Twenty minutes later, Serenity got off to her pit stop at City Hall.

“Serenity.”

A familiar voice summoned her attention the moment she got out of the car. It was Grandma May.

“Grandma May.”

As Serenity hurried over, she took notice of a towering yet distant figure standing next to Grandma May. He must be Zachary, her husband-to-be.

At a closer distance, Serenity was dumbstruck after getting a load of Zachary’s face.

According to Grandma May, her eldest grandson, Zachary had no luck with the ladies despite hitting thirty. Needless to say, Grandma May was worried sick.

Serenity had always assumed that he must be hideous.

After all, she heard that Zachary had a high-paying job up the corporate ladder in a major group.

Now that they had met face-to-face, Serenity realized that she had gotten it all wrong.

Zachary was attractive and carried himself with an air of aloofness. Standing next to Grandma May with a sour face, he appeared standoffish and gave off vibes to stay away from him.

Serenity’s gaze strayed to a black MPV parked nearby. Judging by the logo, it was a national car rather than some multimillion-dollar vehicle. Serenity deduced that the economic difference between her and Zachary was not that far off.

She and an old friend from school had started a bookshop at the entrance of Wiltspoon School.

During her free time, Serenity would also knit little knick-knacks to sell online. The sales were not too bad.

In a month, she could bring home a steady income of twenty thousand dollars. The same amount in Wiltspoon would position her among the white collars. That was why she could afford to hand her sister five thousand bucks for living expenses.

Nevertheless, her brother-in-law had no clue about her earnings. Serenity told her sister to pocket three thousand bucks and only disclose the remaining two thousand to her husband.

“Serenity, this is my oldest grandson, Zachary. He’s a thirty-year-old man and can’t even get himself out there. Although he’s not the warmest person, he’s attentive and considerate. You saved my life, and we’ve known each other for three months. Trust me that I won’t recommend a bad man to you.”

Taking in his nana's description of him, Zachary looked askance at Serenity, icily and profoundly without saying a word.

Perhaps he had grown immune to her grumbles.

Serenity knew that Grandma May had three sons, and each gave her three grandsons, blessing her with nine grandsons. Since a granddaughter was missing in Grandma May’s life, she sought that affinity with Serenity.

Although blushing, Serenity openly extended her right hand to Zachary and introduced herself with a smile, “Hello, Mr. York. I’m Serenity Hunt.”

Zachary’s penetrating gaze scanned Serenity from head to toe and back. With Nana clearing her throat, he reached out his right hand for a shake, albeit his voice reflected an icy tone. “Zachary.”

After the handshake, Zachary raised his left hand to look at the time before informing Serenity. “I’m a busy man. Let’s get it done and over with.”

Serenity hummed in acknowledgment.

Grandma May jumped in. “Go on inside to sort out the paperwork. I’ll wait for you here.”

“Nana, get into the car. It’s a hot day out.”

Zachary said as he helped Nana into the car.

Through his actions, Serenity was able to agree with Grandma May’s statement that Zachary might be callous, but his heart was in the right place.

Although they were strangers, Grandma May mentioned that Serenity could move out of her sister’s place into an apartment Zachary owned and paid for in full after the marriage. It could reassure her sister that Serenity was in good hands and end the arguments in the apartment because of her.

It was only a marriage of convenience.

Soon, Zachary returned to Serenity’s side and uttered, “Let’s go.”

“Sure.” Serenity quietly followed him into City Hall.

At the registry office, Zachary urged Serenity. “Ms. Hunt, you can still change your mind if you don’t want to go through with this. It doesn’t matter what my Nana says. Marriage is a huge commitment, not to be taken lightly.”

He was hoping Serenity had second thoughts because he had no intention of marrying a woman he had just met.

On the other hand, Xavier was born with a silver spoon. He could live a relaxed life because he did not have to be trained as an heir. As Xavier’s father, Josh had also accumulated a lot of wealth for his son. Once he was all grown up, he could either start a business if he had the acumen for it or simply inherit Josh’s assets. Even if Xavier did nothing, the assets that his parents and grandparents had saved up would be more than enough to last him three lifetimes. It was naturally a better life compared to Laurence’s.Xavier admired Laurence’s mastery of martial arts. Having started training in the Bucham family, he was considered skilled among his peers. However, Laurence was at the level where he could easily defeat Xavier. Most kids look up to the strong. Since Laurence was the strongest among the boys, he quickly gathered a small group of followers. Serenity sipped her coffee slowly. Meanwhile, the two men continued talking about work. After finishing her coffee, Sere

“Zachary.”Serenity quickly stopped him. She said, “This is your office. Someone might come in at any moment. It’s not as if you haven’t had sex lately. Why are you in such a rush? Can’t we do it when we get home tonight?”When Serenity returned from Solville, she and Zachary went at it for almost the entire night. She was extremely sore when she woke up the next day. It had been a long time since she felt that way. Zachary had always been caring and attentive. He was the one who said to prioritize her health. Therefore, he gave up the idea of having a go in his private lounge. However, he continued hugging her and whispered, “We can’t even enjoy ourselves fully for fear Lil’ Pie might wake up. When Callia gets older, she’ll have to sleep on her own.”That was the only way Zachary and Serenity could have time to themselves again. Serenity could not help but blush. She said, “Stop talking. You should go on with your work. I’ll prepare a cup of coffee for you.”“You still g

Seven ladies who married the York brothers came from prominent families. If Alex’s wife were to be an ordinary person, she would be under a lot of pressure. “A doctor saves life. There shouldn’t be any issues with her character. Her family is probably well-off, considering they could afford to send her to medical school. Of course, these are all secondary. The most important thing is whether that doctor is still single.”Hayden thought Dr. Jones’s family was nothing to worry about. She felt Kevin should be concerned about whether she was already taken or not. If she were, then how could Alex possibly snatch someone else’s girlfriend?A York man could not be a homewrecker. There were many other women in the world. There was no need to be a homewrecker just to obtain a woman.“You’re right. I believe Alex will look into it. He’ll give up if she already has a partner. After all, he has only met her once. Even if he had fallen in love at first sight, saying that he was already deepl

“Alex had a car accident.”Hayden was shocked. She asked, concerned, “Is he injured? Where did it happen? Are you, Alex, and Serenity already at the hospital?”Kevin replied, “Don’t worry. We didn’t let our parents know because he wasn’t seriously hurt. Alex sustained external wounds, but we’ll only know if he has any internal injuries after a detailed scan.“He doesn’t look like he’s in a bad condition. He also told us he was fine. The front of the car was badly damaged. He said the windscreen shattered and cut his hand.“He called Zachary first, who informed Serenity to notify Peter and me. Zachary and Serenity have left, while Peter and I are still at the hospital. We’re waiting for the results of Alex’s scans. If there aren’t any major issues, we’ll get his butler to take care of him later.”The York elders would suspect something was up if they knew the York brothers had left the manor all of a sudden. While Grandma May was retired, she was still as sharp as ever.“The mos

Kevin saw Zachary and Serenity out of the hospital room.“Kevin, no need to see us out. I’ll go with Zachary,” Serenity said, indicating he could stay back.Kevin stopped at the doorway, watching them walk away before turning to go back inside. Just then, his phone rang. Seeing it was his wife calling, he paused and walked to the end of the corridor for some quiet before answering.“Kevin, did you go out? The boys are asking where Dad is. They’re looking for you,” Hayden asked.“Yeah, I had to step out for something urgent. With so many playmates around, they still noticed I was gone?”Hayden replied, “They just remembered you and asked a couple of questions. Now they’re out running wild again and I finally got some peace. When are we going back to Jensburg? We can let the boys stay here with Nana.”She was eager to return to work.Compared to childcare, she much preferred working, even if it meant endless meetings and paperwork. She simply did not enjoy parenting, especially wi

“Babe, you’ve got lots of work to do. Since Alex is fine, we can stay here and watch over him. You should go back to work,” Serenity said to Zachary.Earlier, Alex had resisted staying in the hospital, so Zachary’s presence was needed to keep him in check. However, now, even if they tried to kick him out, Alex probably would not want to leave.“Zack, Serenity, you two can head back. Kevin and I will stay here to keep an eye on Alex. Once the test results are out and show no major issues, we’ll have his housekeeper come take care of him,” Peter suggested. They all had their own housekeepers managing their households in the city.Alex also urged Zachary and Serenity to leave.Having his two older brothers here was already stressful enough. With his most intimidating eldest cousin also sitting there, Alex felt like even if his injuries were not serious, the pressure from Zachary’s stern presence would worsen his condition. His awe and fear of Zachary had started in his childhood.
