Chapter 5

Author: Gu Lingfei
With his game face on, Zachary said, “Back to the meeting.”

Sitting nearest to Zachary was his cousin, Callum. Among the cousins within the same age range as Zachary, Callum ranked second.

Callum drew close and whispered, “Zack, I overheard your conversation with Nana. Did you really marry that Ser- girl?”

Zachary shot him a glare.

Scratching his nose, Callum straightened his back and ended the probing.

Even so, Callum had nothing but sympathy for Zachary.

There was no need for the York boys to secure social and financial standing through marriage, but Zack and his new bride were not a match in every single way. Poor Zack. He merely married the girl because Nana took a liking to her.

Once again, Callum offered Zachary his deepest sympathy through his thoughts.

Thank goodness Callum was not the oldest in the family. Otherwise, he would have to step up to the plate and marry Nana’s lifesaver.

Unaware of all that, Serenity got the location details and was busy dragging her suitcase to get to her new home.

She opened the door only to step into a spacious house. The place was bigger and more decked out than her sister’s house.

Putting down her suitcase, Serenity started by looking around the place. This was her home from now on.

It had two living areas, four bedrooms, one kitchen, two bathrooms, and two balconies. Each space was broad and wide. Serenity estimated the entire house to be at least two thousand square feet.

The place was barely furnished as there was only a sofa set with a coffee table, and a wine chiller in the living room. Two out of four bedrooms were equipped with a bed and wardrobe while the other two were empty.

The master bedroom had en-suite facilities, complete with a walk-in closet, study, and bathroom. Despite the divided space, the master bedroom remained huge like the living hall.

This must be Zachary’s space.

Serenity chose to live in the other room with a bed. The sunlight that came from the balcony brightened up the room. There was a room in between the master bedroom and the bedroom Serenity chose. This way, the newlyweds could enjoy their personal space.

Although they were married in the eyes of the law, Serenity would not propose spending time as a married couple unless Zachary asked for it.

After dragging her suitcase to the bedroom, Serenity went into the kitchen.

The kitchen was squeaky clean without kitchenware in sight. Both balconies were also bare but gave a roomy feeling due to the vast space. Serenity intended to spruce up the balcony with some plants and a swing. Nothing beat reading a book and taking in the botanic view on a swing during her free time.

It appeared Zachary was rarely home for dinner.

Now that she was occupying the space, home-cooked meals were a must. Serenity started with the kitchen by purchasing kitchen utensils online. As for plants on the balcony and other furniture, she wanted to get Zachary’s take on it when he got home from work.

It was his house after all while she was simply crashing here.

After placing an order on kitchen tools, Serenity looked at the time and needed to return to the shop.

Picking up the keys, she grabbed her phone and rushed down the stairs.

Serenity made it back to the shop in time for the afterschool rush.

Her best friend, Jasmine, inquired out of concern. “What were you up to in the morning, Seren?”

“My sister and brother-in-law have been in constant argument because of me. I thought about it and decided to move out.” Serenity shrugged. “So I moved out this morning.”

Her best friend’s brother-in-law was something else. Jasmine sighed. “Men love to tell women that they would take care of them, but when it comes down to it, they’re the ones nagging and finding faults. After marriage, we, women, have to put family above all while grinning through misunderstandings. It’s so unfair. I think your sister should find a job! Women must always be financially independent so we have a say in the household.”

While speaking, Jasmine suddenly furrowed her brows and gave Serenity a confused look. “I can’t believe your sister let you move out.”

“I got married.”

“Oh… What? You got married? You don’t even have a boyfriend. Who did you marry?” Jasmine’s mindless nodding was ensued with shock as she stared at Serenity wide-eyed. Her voice went high-pitch too.

Knowing that she could not keep the news from Jasmine, Serenity came clean about the whole thing.

Jasmine glared at Serenity for a while before poking the latter’s forehead. “I don’t know where you find the guts to marry someone you met for the first time. You could’ve stayed with me if you couldn’t find a place. I have extra rooms at my place. You could’ve also picked my cousin if you were looking for a husband.”

“Oh, where’s Dr. Levitt? Is he not here yet?”“He’ll be here soon. You can go on with your errand, Alex. I’ll head inside to get a more secluded seat.”Alex wanted to follow her inside, but his reason told him it was not a suitable time to create a commotion. Therefore, he said, “Okay. I’ll head off first.”He left on his e-bike. After Alex left, Sheila entered the cafe. As soon as she chose a spot, Kent arrived. Kent walked inside and spotted Sheila sitting in the corner. He walked toward her and said, “You’re faster than me on your bike, Sheila.”“It’s only a given because it is more convenient, and I left earlier. Meanwhile, you drove a car and were stuck in traffic for a moment.”A waiter approached them and asked for their orders.Kent ordered a cup of coffee, while Sheila got fruit juice. “Are you drinking coffee at night, Kent? Won’t it affect your sleep? I’m pretty sensitive to caffeine. Half a cup is enough to keep me alert all day. Meanwhile, tea doesn’t have much

About ten minutes later, Sheila parked her ride outside the cafe Kent mentioned. She took off her helmet and grabbed her keys. Just as she was about to enter the cafe, she saw a familiar figure. It was Alex.Alex was also riding an e-bike with a red bag placed on the footrest. Sheila could not see what it was exactly, but it was probably materials for his house’s renovation.“Sheila!”Alex looked surprised. He parked by the roadside. It was new, as it still had a temporary license plate. He probably just bought it that day. Getting the actual license plate would take some time.“Have you clocked off, Alex? Are you going shopping?”Sheila asked with a smile. She thought, ‘Aren’t most CEOs busy and always spend most of their time outside? They probably have meetings until late at night before they can go home.’Why did Alex look more relaxed and even finish work earlier than she did? However, she did not voice her questions out loud.“Yeah. I left my office at half past five.

After Mary finished her food and was about to leave, Kent stopped her and transferred fifty thousand dollars to her through his phone. It amounted to a few months of Mary’s salary.“This is my compensation to you, Mary. I’m sorry. I was a bastard for taking advantage of you last night.”Mary saw the money coming in and said with an expressionless face, “I’m not a prostitute, Dr. Levitt. I won’t accept this money.”After speaking, she left and headed for Kent’s clinic first.Kent also went to the clinic afterward. However, he could not pay attention to work because of what happened last night. Luckily, there were not many patients that day.Night fell, and Sheila was about to get off work.Kent let his two nurses leave first. He had to close the clinic early and go to the hospital to wait for Sheila. After stepping out of the clinic, Mary’s colleague whispered to her, “Dr. Levitt is weird today. There seems to be something weighing on his mind. Do you think the clinic is in trou

He asked Mary, “How did Sheila know you spent the night at my place?“Did she come by?”“Dr. Jones didn’t come, but she called me last night to ask how you were doing. I said you fell asleep, and she asked if I was still in your house. When I told her that I was, she just told me to look after you and hung up.”Mary told a small lie.“Dr. Jones is clever. She definitely guessed that I spent the night here.”Kent got up from the floor. He said, “I was drunk and didn’t know what I was doing last night, Mary. Besides, we didn’t have sex.“Even if someone knew you spent the night at my place, they wouldn’t know what we had done. Anyone would know that nothing could’ve happened between us since I was utterly wasted.“I’ll give you a raise and a one-off compensation, okay?”He did not want to be forced into marrying Mary just because he got drunk once.Mary simply stared at him for a while before getting out of bed. However, she did not leave his house immediately. She exited the b

Kent remembered that Mary had brought him home. They even had a long conversation on the way back. They also talked about their families. Mary said they were meant to be together and told him to stop pining for Sheila. She also promised that if she were to marry him, she would stop giving money to her parents, like now.She would prioritize her new family and only give her parents some allowance during special occasions.Mary also advised him not to let his relatives take advantage of him anymore and to stop shouldering everything himself. She said his parents simply had too much pride and loved bragging.Kent had replied that he could not let Sheila go. He had loved her and waited for her for so many years. Now that he had finally confessed and was wooing her, how could he give up just because she rejected him several times? Some people did not give up even after their love interests rejected them countless times. In the end, their persistence touched their love interests, an

Grandma May replied, “Your grandparents and uncles have gone to Solville. Your Uncle River is getting married.”“Married?”Callia raised her head and asked, puzzled, “Why?”Grandma May smiled. “He’s going to bring another aunt home for you. Didn’t you guys want another aunt?“It’s Aunt Rose. The Aunt Rose you like is going to be your Uncle River’s wife.”Callia did not understand Grandma May’s words despite the patient explanation.Grandma May lifted her and said, “You don’t have to understand it, Lil’ Pie. You just need to know that there’ll be one more person joining our family in the future. Your grandparents will be back soon.“Do you miss them?”Callia nodded. “Yes.”“Why don’t we have a seat at the summer house and give your nana a call?”Callia nodded again. However, as soon as they were seated, Grandma May’s phone rang.Serenity had sent her a voice message, asking if Callia had woken up and eaten something. After replying to Serenity’s message, Grandma May let Cal
