Chapter 5

Author: Gu Lingfei
With his game face on, Zachary said, “Back to the meeting.”

Sitting nearest to Zachary was his cousin, Callum. Among the cousins within the same age range as Zachary, Callum ranked second.

Callum drew close and whispered, “Zack, I overheard your conversation with Nana. Did you really marry that Ser- girl?”

Zachary shot him a glare.

Scratching his nose, Callum straightened his back and ended the probing.

Even so, Callum had nothing but sympathy for Zachary.

There was no need for the York boys to secure social and financial standing through marriage, but Zack and his new bride were not a match in every single way. Poor Zack. He merely married the girl because Nana took a liking to her.

Once again, Callum offered Zachary his deepest sympathy through his thoughts.

Thank goodness Callum was not the oldest in the family. Otherwise, he would have to step up to the plate and marry Nana’s lifesaver.

Unaware of all that, Serenity got the location details and was busy dragging her suitcase to get to her new home.

She opened the door only to step into a spacious house. The place was bigger and more decked out than her sister’s house.

Putting down her suitcase, Serenity started by looking around the place. This was her home from now on.

It had two living areas, four bedrooms, one kitchen, two bathrooms, and two balconies. Each space was broad and wide. Serenity estimated the entire house to be at least two thousand square feet.

The place was barely furnished as there was only a sofa set with a coffee table, and a wine chiller in the living room. Two out of four bedrooms were equipped with a bed and wardrobe while the other two were empty.

The master bedroom had en-suite facilities, complete with a walk-in closet, study, and bathroom. Despite the divided space, the master bedroom remained huge like the living hall.

This must be Zachary’s space.

Serenity chose to live in the other room with a bed. The sunlight that came from the balcony brightened up the room. There was a room in between the master bedroom and the bedroom Serenity chose. This way, the newlyweds could enjoy their personal space.

Although they were married in the eyes of the law, Serenity would not propose spending time as a married couple unless Zachary asked for it.

After dragging her suitcase to the bedroom, Serenity went into the kitchen.

The kitchen was squeaky clean without kitchenware in sight. Both balconies were also bare but gave a roomy feeling due to the vast space. Serenity intended to spruce up the balcony with some plants and a swing. Nothing beat reading a book and taking in the botanic view on a swing during her free time.

It appeared Zachary was rarely home for dinner.

Now that she was occupying the space, home-cooked meals were a must. Serenity started with the kitchen by purchasing kitchen utensils online. As for plants on the balcony and other furniture, she wanted to get Zachary’s take on it when he got home from work.

It was his house after all while she was simply crashing here.

After placing an order on kitchen tools, Serenity looked at the time and needed to return to the shop.

Picking up the keys, she grabbed her phone and rushed down the stairs.

Serenity made it back to the shop in time for the afterschool rush.

Her best friend, Jasmine, inquired out of concern. “What were you up to in the morning, Seren?”

“My sister and brother-in-law have been in constant argument because of me. I thought about it and decided to move out.” Serenity shrugged. “So I moved out this morning.”

Her best friend’s brother-in-law was something else. Jasmine sighed. “Men love to tell women that they would take care of them, but when it comes down to it, they’re the ones nagging and finding faults. After marriage, we, women, have to put family above all while grinning through misunderstandings. It’s so unfair. I think your sister should find a job! Women must always be financially independent so we have a say in the household.”

While speaking, Jasmine suddenly furrowed her brows and gave Serenity a confused look. “I can’t believe your sister let you move out.”

“I got married.”

“Oh… What? You got married? You don’t even have a boyfriend. Who did you marry?” Jasmine’s mindless nodding was ensued with shock as she stared at Serenity wide-eyed. Her voice went high-pitch too.

Knowing that she could not keep the news from Jasmine, Serenity came clean about the whole thing.

Jasmine glared at Serenity for a while before poking the latter’s forehead. “I don’t know where you find the guts to marry someone you met for the first time. You could’ve stayed with me if you couldn’t find a place. I have extra rooms at my place. You could’ve also picked my cousin if you were looking for a husband.”

“I thought since she has experience with renovations and I’d already seen her apartment, I’d ask Dr. Jones to recommend her craftsmen to me. I also asked her to take me to buy materials since she’s experienced.“We just went to look at materials together. I was planning to take Dr. Jones home first before coming back. Oh, her family owns a building on Westbrooke Street. The ground floor is a clinic run by her uncle and aunt.“Though Dr. Jones’s apartment in Westbrooke Gardens has already been renovated, she hasn’t officially moved in yet.”Grandma May smiled warmly and said, “I see, no wonder you looked unfamiliar. So you’re his new neighbor.“Do you live on Westbrooke Street, Dr. Jones?”Sheila smiled and replied, “Yes, my grandparents bought the land and built the house. The whole family used to live there. Later, my father and the others bought other properties, but we still prefer coming back here to live.“There are lots of people. It’s lively, and it’s also the place we've

“In that case, let’s head back to Westbrooke Gardens together.”Since he had already warned her and she still chose to meet Grandma May, then so be it.Sooner or later, the old lady would find out anyway. With how sharp his nana was, he could not keep it from her for long.Case in point, just because he was personally overseeing the renovation, Grandma May had already grown suspicious. Unlike Rowan, who just kept muttering and thinking hard but could not figure it out, genuinely believing Westbrooke Gardens was an exceptionally good property.Sheila smiled. “Your nana probably isn’t as intimidating as you make her out to be. I caught a glimpse of her from afar last time and thought she seemed very kind.”“My nana is very kind, but haven’t you heard that old people are like children? When people get old, they can be just like little kids.”Sheila laughed, “That’s true, too.”As they spoke, they soon arrived at Westbrooke Gardens.Alex spotted two familiar cars. Recognizing the

Lately, that classmate of hers had stopped hovering around her.It was just Kent who still refused to give up and was pestering her relentlessly. When she worked the night shift, every morning, Kent would be waiting at the hospital entrance for her to get off work, wanting to take her out for breakfast. When she switched to the day shift, Kent would still wait for her at the hospital entrance every day, wanting to invite her to see a movie or go shopping with her.She had clearly rejected him several times, but Kent just would not take no for an answer.Kent said he had liked her for years, that he could not let her go, and begged her to give him a chance. She sighed internally. Being liked by someone could sometimes be a real hassle. She truly felt no spark with Kent, and it was not just because she thought his family would be a burden. If she loved Kent, even if his family was troublesome, she could handle it and would not let the Levitts take advantage of her indefinitely.

“You just bought this new place, and I haven’t seen it yet. Lil’ Pie’s asleep now, and I’m bored, so I thought I’d come take a look. Rowan keeps saying he can’t see why you’re so fixated on this new apartment of yours. That boy’s too young to notice anything.”Alex cursed Rowan in his heart. What was that kid always muttering to their nana about? He had told him to buy an apartment here, too, but he would not.Yet he loved saying things in front of their nana.Did he not know that their Nana was the biggest gossip lover of them all?Even though she was old now, she was still sharp as a tack. If she visited a couple of times, she would figure out that his real interest was not in the apartment itself.“I’m out buying materials right now. I’ll be back in about ten minutes. Nana, please wait for me at the entrance first.”Alex said, “Back when my hand was injured and I couldn’t work, I just thought I’d personally oversee the renovation for once. What could be so different? It’s jus

It was only to the outside world that Zachary was the formidable Mr. York who could create storms with a single call, and make the business world of Wiltspoon tremble with a stamp of his foot.Grandma May immediately called Serenity. When Serenity answered, she said, “Seren, I’m so bored at home. With Lil’ Pie asleep, I’m even more bored.”Serenity laughed. “You want to go out, don’t you? Where to?”She could easily guess what Grandma May was thinking.Grandma May laughed too. “My granddaughter-in-law understands me best. You knew as soon as I spoke. I do want to go out. I’m going stir-crazy at home.“I won’t go far, just to Westbrooke Gardens to see Alex’s new house. He’s taking it so seriously, even going to the building materials market himself to buy supplies. I’m curious and want to take a look.“Many of the shops on Westbrooke Street also belong to our family, right? I’ll stop by to check out those properties I bought back then.”She had purchased them and handed them ove

After putting their things away and resting for a short while, River brought his elders and Rosalie back to the Lafayette home.River and Rosalie had finally made it official, so they were just waiting to have the wedding.Meanwhile, Alex still did not dare confess his feelings. After resting for half a month, he finally removed the bandages on his hands, which had fully healed. However, he still reduced the time he spent in the office. He told Zachary that he needed to renovate his Westbrooke Gardens apartment and had to frequent the building materials market for supplies, so he did not have much time to head back to the office.Zachary knew Alex’s true motive was to get closer to Sheila, so he reduced Alex’s workload and allowed him to go to work when he wanted to.
