Chapter 1

To have his illegitimate son recognized by the family, Liam Caldwell lied to Audrey Jensen and made her believe she couldn’t have children.

On the eve of their wedding, he even brought his first love and his illegitimate son into their home.

“From now on, you and Julie are equals. Julie’s child will be our child too. Once we’re married, he’ll call you Mom just the same.”

Audrey held the medical report in her hand.

She didn’t expose him.

She simply let him go on arranging that ridiculous wedding.

Until the wedding one month later.

With a pregnancy report in her hand, she walked up to Liam with Elliot Lowe, the heir to the most powerful family in the country, holding his hand.

“Has it ever occurred to you that maybe you’re the one who can’t have children, not me? But don’t worry. Since you can’t have your own, Elliot’s child can be your child too. After the wedding, he’ll be the main husband, and you can be the side piece. Make sure you show him the proper respect.”

That day, Liam became the biggest joke at his own wedding.

...

After Audrey proposed to Liam for the ninety-ninth time, he finally said yes.

Audrey was overjoyed.

But when the day came for them to get their marriage license, Liam never showed up.

Heartbroken, Audrey left the courthouse and went back to the house they were supposed to move into after the wedding, only to find her fiancé wrapped around his first love, kissing her like she was the only woman in the world.

Audrey’s mind went blank.

The two people inside were so lost in each other that they had no idea she was there.

Julie let out a breathless moan. “Liam, Audrey’s about to get married to you. If she finds out about us, do you think she’ll lose her mind?”

“The marriage?” Liam’s voice was cold. “If Grandpa hadn’t refused to accept us and kept pressuring me, why would I pretend to pursue her? Why would I agree to marry some small-town orphan just because he told me to?”

At the mention of Audrey, disgust flickered in Liam’s eyes.

Audrey was beautiful. No one could deny that.

But she was only an orphan adopted by the Jensen family, and she had spent years living in the countryside.

Aside from being the kind of woman who cooked, cleaned, raised children, and did whatever she was told, she had nothing else going for her. She was painfully dull.

How could she ever compare to Julie Sanders, who had graduated from a prestigious university and become a researcher at such a young age?

If he hadn’t been worried that his grandfather would target Julie and her son, he never would have agreed to get married with Audrey.

At that thought, Liam’s gaze softened as it fell on Julie’s face. His throat moved, and he kissed her even more deeply.

“Julie, don’t worry. You’re the only woman in my heart. Besides, you gave birth to Ian, my brilliant little boy. The marriage is just an act for Grandpa. Once he recovers, I’ll use Audrey’s infertility as an excuse to divorce her and marry you properly. By then, the Jensen family will kick her out too. Even if she wants to make trouble, she won’t be able to do anything.”

“Liam, you’re so good to me.”

Their mingled voices reached Audrey’s ears, sharp and sickening.

Liam’s tender confession felt like a hard slap across her face.

Her whole world collapsed.

Her eyes turned red in an instant.

She had waited for Liam at the courthouse all day.

And all she got was his betrayal.

So the reason Liam had stood her up was that he had gone to pick up Julie, his first love who had just returned from abroad. Then he had brought her to the home he was supposed to share with Audrey and fooled around with her there.

What hurt even more was that they had been together for five years, and he had never loved her.

From beginning to end, he had only treated her as a stand-in. Even the marriage license was just a way to fool his grandfather, William Caldwell. Once the timing was right, he planned to divorce her, the fool he had used all along.

As Audrey thought about everything she had done for Liam over the years, pain and rage nearly swallowed her whole.

Back when they got engaged, Liam had said, “Audrey, you’re the only one who can help me.”

So she had worked herself to exhaustion taking care of his frail mother.

Later, when Liam was poisoned, she was the one who saved his life. Afterward, she had not even told him because she did not want him to feel guilty.

When the Caldwell family began to decline, she secretly helped secure their projects, while Liam took all the credit.

She had thought she could move his heart.

In return, all she got was betrayal.

The sting in her fingertips slowly brought Audrey back to herself.

Fine.

If he didn’t love her, so be it.

She was not the kind of woman who clung to a man who did not want her.

As long as Liam broke up with her, she would never have chased after him.

But instead, he had lied to her.

Schemed against her.

Used her.

He even wanted the Jensen family to throw her out, leaving her to bear the shame and pain of infertility, with no regard for her reputation or her future.

How could she possibly let that go?

He wanted to play games?

Fine.

Then she would play with them.

Audrey took out her phone and recorded a video of the two of them together.

Then she made a call.

“Hello. I’d like to report suspected illegal activity and possible solicitation at 23 Kingston Road.”

Julie’s words were clever. She had given her son a way out while implying Audrey was making a big deal out of nothing.Audrey glanced at her, the corner of her mouth lifting slightly.“Ms. Sanders, I’m not trying to reason with you. I’m stating a fact.”She lowered her head and looked at Ian.“Sweetheart, making a mistake isn’t the scary part. The scary part is making a mistake and refusing to admit it. Did your mother ever teach you that?”Ian’s eyes reddened at her words. His mouth twisted, and he looked like he was about to cry.Julie quickly pulled him into her arms, her expression turning unpleasant.“Audrey, why are you arguing with a child?”“I’m not arguing with him,” Audrey said lightly. “I just hope he understands that bullying someone who can’t speak doesn’t make him look strong. It only makes people wonder how he was raised.”Her last few words were quiet, but they landed like a slap across Julie’s face. After all, Julie had just used the same idea of “manners” t

When Julie saw Audrey getting involved, anxiety flashed through her.Whatever else happened, she wanted Audrey gone as soon as possible. So Julie covered Ian’s mouth and urged, “Audrey, you’re right. We won’t pursue this for now. You should…”Audrey noticed the urgency in Julie’s voice. It was almost as if she were hiding from something.Just as Audrey was wondering about it, a very familiar male voice came from behind her.“Audrey?”Liam was here.Audrey understood at once. She glanced down at her outfit, and a trace of mockery tugged at her lips.So Julie knew it too.Liam was nothing but a shallow bastard who loved a pretty face.Liam wore a crisp suit with small touches of red in the detailing. He had clearly dressed up on purpose, as if he had come here for a date with Julie. When Audrey turned around, Liam visibly froze.Audrey rarely dressed up.In his memory, she was always bare-faced and plain. Beautiful, yes, but bland, like a glass of water with no flavor.Bu

Audrey sighed softly. What were the odds? Before meeting Elliot, she had to run into this kind of bad luck.Compared with Ian, who was on an entirely different level in size, the little girl looked especially pitiful.Audrey frowned slightly, a trace of hesitation rising in her heart.Should she help? There was no need, right? The Willow Cafe was far from Hillside Villa. A little girl this young could not have come here on her own.Her family had to be nearby. The meeting time was almost here, and Audrey did not want to waste time on someone else’s problem. She was about to walk around the two children and head inside when a gentle but anxious voice rang out.“Ian! What happened?”Julie, dressed in a black dress, hurried over to her son. When she looked up, she saw Audrey standing not far away. The moment Julie saw Audrey, disbelief flashed through her eyes. This perfectly dressed woman, so beautiful she almost looked unreal, was Audrey Jensen?Fine.Audrey was beautifu

Audrey opened her eyes and looked into the mirror. She tilted her head slightly from side to side, studying herself. The makeup artist had clearly put real thought into the look. The makeup was not heavy, but it brought out every advantage in her features. Most of all, it highlighted the cool, distant quality in her eyes and brows perfectly. The slight lift at the corners of her eyes added a touch of allure without looking forced.“You’re actually unreal.” Alin circled her once, clicking her tongue in amazement. “I work in fashion, so I’ve seen plenty of beautiful women, but you’re the kind of beauty people are just born with. It’s like the universe went out of its way to make you beautiful.”Was it really that dramatic?Audrey looked at herself in the mirror again, her expression calm. There were plenty of beautiful women in the world.Beautiful men, on the other hand, were rare.Faced with Alin’s praise, she only said lightly, “It’s fine.”“Fine?” Alin’s voice shot up sever

Through the video screen, Audrey saw that the person standing outside was a middle-aged woman. Only then did she go to open the door.If it really had been Liam, she would have pretended to be asleep. After all, seeing a scumbag this late at night was a guaranteed nightmare. The woman was wearing a cream-colored uniform and looked like household staff.Still, there was something refined about her, something that made her seem as if she had come from an old, powerful household.“Hello. I’m the nanny from the house next door. You can call me Mrs. Watson.” Mrs. Watson smiled kindly and rubbed her hands together. “Our young lady accidentally bumped into you earlier. I came specially to apologize. I hope you won’t take it to heart.”Audrey paused slightly. It was only a child bumping into her.It was hardly worth sending someone over to apologize in person. Then Mrs. Watson added, “If you happen to see my young miss again next time, I hope you can be patient with her.”Now Audrey

If the timing had been right, Audrey would have loved to tell Liam right then and there. She truly had no interest in being Mrs. Caldwell. But there were some things William could know that Liam, this walking headache, absolutely could not.Audrey had no desire to keep talking to an idiot. She turned and left the Caldwell residence. Her figure was slender, and her steps were light. From behind, she did not seem any different from before.Yet Liam could not shake the feeling that something had changed.Ever since he had failed to show up for their marriage license, Audrey had seemed more and more beyond his control. The thought made him increasingly irritated. He still preferred the old Audrey, the one who had treated him like the center of her world....By the time Audrey returned to Hillside Villa, it was already ten at night. The villa sat in the suburbs outside the city, far from the bright lights and noise downtown. Without all that glare, a few stars were visible in t
