They got to an old building, the air smelled of dust and damp wood. It was the kind of place where bad things happened. Carlo and his men stepped out of the car slowly. No one said a word. They all had their guns out, ready for anything.

Their steps were quiet but sharp as they moved inside. They didn’t know what to expect. But they were ready. Ready to fight. Ready to kill. Ready to die if they had to.

The floors creaked under their feet. The light was dim. Shadows danced along the hallway walls. They moved in a tight group, checking every corner. Every step was filled with tension. They opened doors, looked behind crates, and kept their fingers close to their triggers.

Then they reached one room. The door was old and half open. They moved carefully. Carlo pushed it open with the tip of his gun. And there—there she was.

Kristen.

I don’t think she’d try to get you killed.” Carlo’s lips curved into a painful smirk. “You don’t know Bernice like I do,” he muttered, his voice low and raspy. “She’s capable of the worst things, Sophie.” Kristen frowned. “Still… she loved you. I don’t know. It just doesn’t make sense.” He looked at her, his eyes sharp even through the pain. “You didn’t think she’d just let it slide, me throwing her out of the house like that?” He winced, hand resting over his wounded side. “Bernice doesn’t take humiliation quietly. That woman’s pride is deadly.” Kristen reached out and touched his cheek gently with her hand, brushing her thumb over the faint stubble on his jaw. “You should stop talking. It’ll only make the pain worse.” Carlo let out a soft chuckle, though it quickly turned into a groan. “This is nothing. I’ve had worse.”
