Chapter 4
Everyone froze. Her father looked at her with surprised but kind eyes. Victoria, her stepmother, had the biggest frown on her face that it was laughable. Travis broke the silence by choking on his eggs.
“Are you okay?” Alice asked worriedly, handing him a cup of coffee.
“I'm fine.” He said, drinking a swig on the coffee.
“Careful. You may burn your tongue.”
This weird affection was strange but nice. He wasn't complaining but it was weird that she wasn't freaking out by seeing him and she wanted to get married too?
Everyone looked at them with wide eyes.
“Don't you think it's too early for you to get married? I mean you're only so-”
“I thought you were getting me who wanted me out of the house so soon, Mother. What's the need to pretend now?” Alice said with a sneer.
“Come on, Alice. Don't be like that. I only want the best for you like any mother would.” She said with faux gentleness.
“Mhm. Daddy, what's that tea you're drinking?” Alice asked her father, ignoring her stepmother.
“It's this blood pressure tea Victoria got from Spain the last time she went.”
“Is it branded?” Her stepmother's face hardened from the question.
“What was this stupid bitch up to now? Has she gotten smarter overnight? Does she know something?” Victoria thought sending a glare to Alice.
“No dear. I don't think so.”
“You should stop taking it. We don't know what it is or what is inside. It isn't safe.” Alice remembered that in her past life her father died abruptly and there were traces of poison. She suspected her stepmother was giving him small doses of medicine everyday for his organs to fail.
“I'm going now. Travis is going to drop me off.” Alice said rising up and moving towards the door with Travis.
Travis got in the back seat of the Tolls-Toyce in deep thought.
“Who was this girl? What had they done with the real Alice?”
“Do you want to go to the marriage bureau after school to get our marriage license? I carried my documents.” Alice said abruptly.
Travis was caught off guard yet again. He looked at her with smiling eyes. “Do you really want to?” He asked in a deep, sensual voice.
Alice's cheeks reddened as she answered shyly. “Yes I do.”
“I'll go ring shopping before the end of the day, then we can register the marriage.” He answered.
“Oh. That's better.” She said looking out the window with deep thought.
“Is she having regrets now? Is she thinking about that boy?” Travis thought angrily as he pulled her into his lap.
Alice gasped as she was pulled on the wolf's thigh. “Are you okay?” She asked him, looking into his eyes.
“Stop thinking about him.” He said angrily, his hand tightening around her waist.
“Thinking about who?” She said confusedly looking at him.
It finally clicked. He must have thought she was thinking about Grant.
“Your jealousy is so cute.” She said, pecking his cheeks.
“The only man I think of is you. No one else.” She said, pecking him again.
The rest of the car ride was in silence. The big bad wolf’s heart was sated and Alice sat on his lap nimbly until they reached closer to the school gate.
“Drop me off here. I don't want anyone to see me getting off such a high brand car. It'll draw too much attention.” She said looking at him.
He looked at her for a moment finally agreeing. “Okay.”
She got off the car, pausing by the door slightly then turning to give the wolf a big kiss on his lips.
“Bye.” She said smiling and running to the gate.
He looked confused. He touched his lips then smiled waving at the driver to continue driving.
Alice walked into the premises of the school, noticing other people's stares on her.
“Wow, who's she? Is she a new transfer student? She's so beautiful.” The people whispered.
“She's the most beautiful girl on campus. She's even more beautiful than Octavia.” Another voice whispered.
She ignored all the whispers going straight to her first class. When she pushed open the door. The noise hushed. There was no sound heard. It was like the class was frozen. She looked around for her chair, citing the last chair at the back with books heaped.
She moved to the chair, ignoring the stares.
“Who is she? Is she a new student? Oh my goodness? She's going to that ugly wench's chair.” Whispers sounded all around the class.
She pushed all the books to the floor, kicking away all the rubbish and settling down on the chair, resting her head on the table.
“E-excuse me.” A small voice called out by her side. She opened her eyes to see who it was, a cute girl with glasses. She remembered her from her past life. She was one of the people that were nice to her and tried to warn her but she ignored her. Her name was Nora.
In the future, she was an excellent script writer who was so popular but she married a bad man who beat her and later she ended up dead with her wrists slit in her bathtub. It was all over the news. She would try as much as she could to protect her in this life.
Nora was astounded by the pretty girl heavily staring at her with hooded eyes. Her cheeks reddened as she turned away, stuttering.
“Someone's sitting there and her name's Alice. You can get another side. You can come to the one near me. There's no one there.” She said shyly.
“She has a distinct personality and she's going to get really mad seeing you touching her things.” The whole class looked with surprise as th
ey saw Nora with Alice.
“I know.”
“You know?”
“Yes. I know because I'm her. I'm Alice.”
Greta sat in her sleek black car, mirror angled toward her face. She dragged the tube of crimson lipstick slowly across her mouth, pressing her lips together with a small pout. A fingertip smoothed the curve of her cupid's bow, then she checked herself from a few different angles. Perfect. She tossed the lipstick back into her bag, ran a hand over her hair, and stepped out like she owned the pavement. The lobby's hum changed instantly. Heads turned, conversations faltered."Isn't that?" a woman near the elevator whispered."The movie star?" another finished under her breath.Greta gave them a polite but knowing smile, letting her heels click deliberately against the polished floor as she crossed to the reception desk."I'm here to see Travis Hale," she said, voice smooth enough to melt glass.Moments later, she was walking into his office."Greta," Travis said, glancing up from his desk, his tone measured. "I wasn't expecting you.""You never do," she replied, closing the door behind
Greta leaned one manicured hand against the doorframe, sunglasses sliding down the bridge of her nose."Alice," she purred, drawing out the name as though tasting it. "Ready for lunch?"Alice stepped out, closing the door behind her. "Give me a second to lock up."Greta's eyes flicked past her shoulder. "No Travis today?" she asked, voice dipping into that silky register."He's busy," Alice said, twisting the key until it clicked."Mm." Greta's smile curved. "Still the workaholic, I see. Does he ever take a break? For you, I mean?"Alice glanced at her, expression unreadable. "We manage just fine.""Because I remember…" Greta tilted her head, lips curling as if recalling a private joke. "He used to hate letting me out of his sight."Alice smoothed her bag strap over her shoulder. "Times change."Greta's laugh was low, deliberate. "Do they?""They do," Alice said, brushing past her toward the car. "Or some people just get left behind."Greta followed, the click of her heels sharp again
"Greta?" Mason was the first to speak, half-rising from his chair with a grin that bordered on boyish. "Well, look who decided to remember we exist."Greta Sinclair removed her sunglasses with a deliberate flick, the faintest smile touching her lips. "Mason Vale. Still talking too much, I see."He laughed. "And you're still… intimidating as hell.""Charming, as always," she replied, stepping closer. Her coat fell open just enough to reveal the kind of sleek black dress that didn't need a single accessory to make a statement.Liam was already on his feet. "No way. Absolutely no way." He moved in for a hug without hesitation. "You look wow.""Fabulous," Greta supplied smoothly, allowing the embrace before leaning back. "I'm aware.""You disappear for five years-""Six," she corrected."-and come back looking like this?"Her smile didn't waver. "I take my work seriously."Christian had stood by now, waiting his turn. "You've been impossible to reach.""I've been busy," Greta said, her to
"Tell me again," Mason said, swirling his straw through the ice in his drink, "how you managed to convince Travis to take an actual lunch break."Alice smiled over the rim of her glass. "I didn't. I just told him I'd be here, and he showed up.""Manipulation at its finest," Liam said with a grin. "You're learning."Travis arched a brow at him. "Careful, Parket.""What? I'm just impressed," Liam said, lifting his hands in mock surrender. "Most of us have been trying for years to get you to join us for one of these without bailing for a meeting.""I like lunch with my wife," Travis said simply, as if that explained everything. His lips curving faintly. "You're the only one I tune in for."Alice smiled. "That's cheesy.""True," he said, eyes holding hers a moment longer than necessary. "But you smiled anyway.""Oh my God," Liam groaned, throwing his napkin on the table. "Get a room."Michael pointed his fork at them. "This is worse than Mason flirting with her.""I'm not flirting," Mason
The restaurant wasn't overly crowded, just busy enough for the low hum of conversations to feel like background music. Soft golden lighting made the polished tables glow, and the scent of roasted garlic and fresh bread drifted between them like an unspoken invitation.Travis sat across from Alice, his jacket draped over the back of his chair. He leaned forward, forearms resting on the table, watching her with the kind of attention that made her cheeks warm even though she told herself she was used to it by now."You're smiling too much," he teased, a faint smirk playing at his lips."I'm allowed to," Alice replied, cutting into her pasta. "You know, for once, I don't feel like I'm pretending."His brow softened. "You've never been good at pretending. You were just… surviving."She nodded slowly, the fork pausing mid-air. "Exactly. I used to wake up and wonder if I'd make it through the day. Now I just… wake up." Her smile widened. "And you're there."Travis reached over and brushed hi
"Octavia Willis, please.""She's coming."The guard's voice was flat, but Alice's heart skipped all the same. She sat in the cold metal chair, hands clasped in her lap, eyes fixed on the door. The walls around her were blank, white, and humming faintly from the overhead lights.Footsteps echoed in the hallway. Then the door opened.Octavia stepped inside, her movements restricted by the canvas of a straitjacket, the sleeves cinched tight across her chest. Her hair was longer than Alice remembered, but dull and uneven as if she'd cut it herself with dull scissors. Her eyes, though—her eyes were the same. Sharp. Searching. Full of something between hatred and hunger."Well," Octavia said, her voice low and steady, "look who came to visit the madwoman."Alice kept her voice calm. "I came because we need to talk."Octavia tilted her head. "Talk. After all this time. That's rich." She crossed the room with slow, deliberate steps and sat across from Alice, the straitjacket creaking faintly.
