On the day my younger sister, Layla Rowe, and I were both supposed to get married, my fiancé, Timothy Rowe, personally sent me into the wedding car meant for Layla's fiancé, Noah Baker. Standing outside the car, Timothy said with a cold, almost emotionless expression, "Layla doesn't want to marry a man in a coma, so she's cried and threatened to kill herself several times. She's been spoiled since she was little. She can't handle this kind of hardship. You're different. You're used to being treated badly, so you can handle anything. After Noah dies in a couple of years, I'll divorce Layla and marry you." Everyone thought I would scream, cause a scene, and ruin the wedding like a crazy woman. Instead, I simply smiled and nodded. "Okay." Then I casually closed the wedding car door and disappeared from Timothy's world for good. Three years later, I returned to the country with Noah for his succession ceremony. I never expected to run into Timothy, whom I hadn't seen in three years. "Esther, I've already divorced Layla. We can get back together." I smiled when I heard him. Then I took my son, Liam Baker, from the nanny's arms. "Sorry, but I'm afraid my husband and my son won't agree."

Chapter 1

Timothy Rowe stared at me for a moment. Then he looked at the one-year-old baby in my arms.

His face darkened with displeasure. "Your son? Esther, you married a man in a coma three years ago. At least make your lies believable. Stop this nonsense. I know you're still mad at me for making you take Layla's place and marry a man in a coma. But I'm here for you now, aren't I? So hurry up and divorce Noah. Take your share of his money and come back to me."

I never thought that, three years later, when we met again, Timothy would still say such disgusting things.

He knew how little my family valued me. He knew they had always pushed me around.

Yet he was the one who personally walked me to another man's wedding car and told me, "She's been spoiled since she was little. She can't handle this kind of hardship. You're different. You're used to being treated badly, so you can handle anything."

Back then, I felt like I was in a daze. Everything that had happened seemed like a dream.

No one would have expected me to calmly accept it when Timothy made me switch places with my sister, Layla Rowe, and marry someone else.

Even less would anyone have expected Timothy to eventually marry Layla, the woman he had always treated as his biggest enemy.

My parents had always favored Layla while putting me down.

When Timothy first got together with me, he would stand up for me.

He would get angry on my behalf, and he hated Layla even more for taking away the love and attention our parents should have given me.

Seeing how much he cared about me, I slowly came to see him as the only family I had chosen for myself.

When we first started college, we even dreamed about our future together.

We talked about what our life would be like after we got married. We even talked about what we would name our children.

But at some point, Layla started appearing between us more and more.

Layla had been engaged to Noah Baker since childhood. Noah was the eldest son of the Baker family. During our junior year of college, Noah got into a car accident right after his final exams and fell into a coma.

Layla said she was devastated, so my parents told me to take her out and keep her company.

After that, she started following me everywhere.

Even when Timothy and I went on dates, she insisted on coming along.

Timothy was furious about it. "Do you think I don't know what things are like between you and your sister? She's following you everywhere now. Don't tell me she's trying to ruin our relationship just because her fiancé ended up in a coma."

I knew very well that Layla couldn't stand seeing me happy.

Timothy and I had always been close, but we didn't see each other for two whole weeks just to keep Layla from ruining our dates.

Little by little, Layla stopped following me around. I didn't even see her for days at a time.

I finally breathed a sigh of relief and immediately asked Timothy to meet me.

But when I arrived at our date spot, I was shocked to see Layla there again. "Why are you here again? Are you following me just to ruin my date?"

I thought Timothy would stand by my side like he always had.

Instead, he started blaming me. "Layla is going through a hard time. As her family, shouldn't we be looking out for her?"

Our date never happened that day. Even when I turned around and walked away, Timothy didn't come after me.
