Chapter 3

Author: Shell Flower
But I never expected his promise to be nothing more than a way to keep me under control.

Three days later, I was happily picking out wedding supplies at home.

I even sent pictures to Timothy to show him what I had chosen.

Then I suddenly heard Layla talking to my dad, Kasper Bardot, and Grace. "Timothy is amazing. It only took a few words for him to calm Esther down. Otherwise, she would never agree to marry Noah. If we offend the Bakers, both our family and the Rowes will be finished."

Kasper and Grace happily agreed, "Esther has always been very careful and hard to fool. Without Timothy, we never could have kept this from her. She still thinks she's going to marry Timothy soon, so she's been looking forward to her wedding every day. When the time comes, we'll have you two get married on the same day. Then we'll send her straight to Noah's wedding. Even if she refuses to marry him, the Bakers won't let her go."

I leaned against the doorway and listened to every word in despair.

They were so cruel.

I couldn't understand why they treated Layla and me so differently.

But what hurt the most was knowing that Timothy was not only helping them. He was the one leading this whole plan.

I froze where I stood. I couldn't process what I had just heard.

For a moment, I even wanted to call Timothy and confront him.

Then I heard his voice from outside. "Kasper, Grace, don't worry. I'll treat Layla well from now on. But Esther and I have been together for so many years. Even though I haven't loved her for a long time, I still don't want her to suffer. Once Noah dies, please treat her a little better. After all, she will have helped make it possible for Layla and me to be together."

Kasper and Grace promised him that they would take good care of me.

I smiled silently. Then I started crying.

Timothy and I had grown up together. We started dating after high school.

We had loved each other deeply and dreamed about our future together.

I had trusted him completely.

I trusted our love.

But while I was still dreaming about our beautiful future, he had already betrayed me.

He had just said he wanted me to be treated well. Should I have thanked him for that?

His words only made me feel more foolish.

I was deeply disappointed in both my family and Timothy.

As I wiped away my tears, it felt like I was wiping away every bit of love I had for them.

If they all wanted me to marry Noah so badly, then I would give them exactly what they wanted.

I continued preparing for the wedding as if nothing had happened.

Timothy was also preparing for a wedding. But he was preparing for his wedding to Layla.

To keep me from becoming suspicious, he would ask me to go shopping with him. Then, at the last minute, he would come up with another excuse and cancel.

The first time, he said he had to take his parents to the hospital for a medical checkup.

The second time, he said he was waiting for the insurance company to tow his damaged car to the repair shop.

This time, I looked down at the message he had sent me only a few seconds earlier. "Esther, I have to attend an emergency meeting at work. You know my parents said I'd take over the company after I got married, so I can't go with you today."

I didn't care anymore. I simply replied. "Okay."

Besides, I wasn't going to meet him anyway. There was no reason to waste my time on someone like him.

Whatever he did had nothing to do with me anymore.

Timothy thought no one would ever find out.

But Layla was determined to shove the truth right in my face.

The day before, I had told them I was going to the mall to buy a new bedding set.

Yet the moment I arrived at the store, I saw Layla walking in with Timothy, her arm linked through his. We had come to the exact same store.

I stood there expressionless as Timothy panicked and quickly pulled his arm away from hers. Layla, however, looked straight at me with a provocative smile.

When I looked at him, I slowly calmed down. He was right. From now on, I would never have to keep giving in just to please others. The evening breeze blew through the floor-to-ceiling windows and slowly cleared the anger that still lingered in the lounge. Liam stirred in my arms, then snuggled closer to me. He was sleeping peacefully, looking as sweet and well-behaved as ever.Noah sat beside me on the couch and gently teased Liam's cheek. His eyes were warm and soft, nothing like the sharp look he had when he faced Timothy earlier.I turned to him and finally asked the question I had wanted to ask for the past three years. "The car accident three years ago and your coma... It was all an act from the very beginning, wasn't it?"It was the truth I had sensed on the very first day of our marriage.Everyone thought he was a man in a coma with no awareness of the world around him. But I was the only one who noticed that his eyes looked clear and awake in the middle of the night. His breat

  • Married to the Sleeping Heir   Chapter 8

In the past, I kept giving in, only to be pushed around again and again. But now that I had love and courage, I would never let anyone disturb the peaceful life I had finally built. After the Bakers' succession ceremony ended, the guests gradually left. I took Liam to a private lounge on the side of the ballroom. But before I could even sit down, I heard shouting and arguing outside.Kasper and Grace were blocking the lounge entrance with a tired and miserable-looking Timothy. They were no longer cold and harsh like they used to be. Instead, they deliberately put on guilty and apologetic faces.I held the sleeping Liam in my arms and looked at them. I immediately knew why they were here.Grace quickly walked up to me.Her eyes were red as she reached for the back of my hand. "I'm sorry, Esther. We know we were wrong. You must have suffered so much taking care of a man in a coma for three years. We were always biased toward Layla. We were wrong to treat you that way."Kasper also lowere

"From this moment on, I will cut off all contact with the Bardots as a stranger. But I will still pay for your living expenses when you are old."The Bardots stood there with ugly expressions on their faces. Just then, a sudden commotion broke out at the entrance of the ballroom.Layla walked in wearing a designer gown. But the jewelry and proud, spoiled look she once had were gone. She had taken the last of Timothy's remaining assets and run away to spend it all. Then she had been cheated out of the rest of her money. With nowhere else to go, she had been forced to come back. The moment she saw me and Noah standing protectively in front of me, she shook her head in disbelief.Noah, the man who had lain in a hospital bed for three years and was supposed to spend the rest of his life in a coma, was standing there perfectly healthy. And I, the woman who was supposed to be trapped in loneliness while taking care of a man in a coma, was being carefully protected by him. Even my entire pres

I looked up and saw Grace walking toward me angrily in an old-fashioned evening gown.Kasper followed behind her with the same arrogant look on his face.Layla had nearly blown through the Bardots' entire fortune, yet he was still just as arrogant as ever.I hadn't seen them in three years. They had both aged quite a bit, but their attitude toward me hadn't changed at all.I stood there and looked at them coldly. The moment Grace reached me, she raised her hand to slap me.But Noah quickly stepped in front of me and stopped her.Her hand froze in midair. The pressure coming from Noah made her take several steps back. "You... You're..."Noah gave a quiet laugh. "Esther hasn't cut ties with you yet, so you're still my mother-in-law. But my wife is very precious to me. If you slap her and something happens to her, can your family afford the consequences?"Grace reacted exactly like Timothy had when he first saw Noah.First, she froze. Then she stared at Noah in disbelief. It wasn't until

Timothy followed my gaze. The mocking look on his face changed to shock, then to complete disbelief. My husband, Noah, was wearing a custom-made suit. He was tall and broad-shouldered.He slowly walked out through the main doors of the ballroom. His presence was calm and powerful, completely different from the sickly man who had once lain helplessly in a hospital bed three years ago."Esther, give Liam to the nanny. Don't tire yourself out." His voice was deep and gentle. He took our son, Liam Baker, from my arms and excitedly rubbed his cheek. Then he carefully handed him to the nanny. His movements were gentle and careful. But when he turned back toward Timothy, his eyes had become sharp. He stepped in front of me and shielded me with his tall frame. For the first time in a long time, I felt completely safe."Mr. Rowe, I heard you want my wife to divorce me and then marry you with half of my family's fortune. Is that right?"Timothy stood there in shock. "That's impossible... Noah, w

I only asked calmly, "What a coincidence?"Layla covered her mouth in fake surprise. Then, as if she had been wronged, she bit her lip and grabbed my hand. "Oops, Esther. Our weddings are on the same day, and there wasn't much time to prepare. I'm doing everything by myself, so I asked Timothy to help me. You won't be mad at me, will you?"I didn't want to play along with them. I simply pulled my hand away and turned to leave. But Layla suddenly fell to the floor and started crying. "Esther, I know you're angry. You can do whatever you want to me. I just hope you won't blame Timothy. I don't want you two to fight because of me."Her acting was terrible. But Timothy actually believed her.He quickly helped Layla up and stepped in front of her to protect her. Then he turned on me. "Esther, can you be a little more understanding? Layla is getting married soon. As her sister, you should be helping her instead of getting angry with her. I never realized you could be so narrow-minded."I too
