Chapter 4

Author: Shell Flower
I only asked calmly, "What a coincidence?"

Layla covered her mouth in fake surprise.

Then, as if she had been wronged, she bit her lip and grabbed my hand. "Oops, Esther. Our weddings are on the same day, and there wasn't much time to prepare. I'm doing everything by myself, so I asked Timothy to help me. You won't be mad at me, will you?"

I didn't want to play along with them. I simply pulled my hand away and turned to leave.

But Layla suddenly fell to the floor and started crying. "Esther, I know you're angry. You can do whatever you want to me. I just hope you won't blame Timothy. I don't want you two to fight because of me."

Her acting was terrible.

But Timothy actually believed her.

He quickly helped Layla up and stepped in front of her to protect her.

Then he turned on me. "Esther, can you be a little more understanding? Layla is getting married soon. As her sister, you should be helping her instead of getting angry with her. I never realized you could be so narrow-minded."

I took a few steps back and put some distance between us.

Maybe even Timothy hadn't noticed that we had slowly become enemies without realizing it.

I let out a cold laugh. "I only said, 'What a coincidence?' And you already called me narrow-minded?"

Timothy froze. Then he glanced at Layla standing behind him.

He cleared his throat awkwardly and softened his voice. "I'm just helping you take care of Layla. Don't overthink it."

I nodded. "I'm not overthinking anything. So please, take good care of her. I don't have time to waste on little things when I'm busy preparing for my own wedding."

I could see the shock on Timothy's face.

He was surprised that I could calmly let him stay with Layla.

And perhaps he was confused because I had said "my own wedding" instead of "our wedding."

But I couldn't be bothered to figure out what either of them was thinking. That would only waste my time.

Layla hadn't gotten the reaction she wanted, so of course she refused to give up.

She kept coming to bother me and constantly brought up Timothy.

In the end, I moved into a hotel and blocked every way they could contact me.

I didn't speak to either of them again until the day before the wedding.

What I never expected was that Timothy would personally walk me to Noah's wedding car and boldly confess the truth. "Your whole family begged me to do this. I had no choice, so I had to ask you to marry Noah in Layla's place for now. After Noah dies in a couple of years, I'll divorce Layla and marry you."

I didn't cry and beg him not to leave me like he expected. I didn't cause a scene at the wedding either.

I knew exactly what he was trying to do.

At first, he had hidden the truth from me because he was afraid I'd ruin his wedding to Layla.

Now that he was telling me the truth, it was only because he wanted to satisfy his own ego.

After all, he and Layla deserved each other.

I said, "Okay. I understand. Just remember what you said today. Don't regret it later..."

I smiled as I finished speaking.

Then I quickly shut the car door without even looking at him.

Timothy stood there in a daze, staring at the wedding car as it drove away.

He didn't even have a chance to say another word.

...

My thoughts came back to the present. I looked at the miserable-looking Timothy standing in front of me.

I knew he wasn't here because he still loved me or couldn't forget me.

He was here because he regretted his choices.

He hadn't divorced Layla because he had learned that I was back and wanted to get back together with me.

His wife had ruined both his family's fortune and the Bardots' fortune before running away with the money.

I pointed at the man standing behind me. "My husband isn't in a coma. He's much taller and stronger than you. And don't pretend to be surprised. Didn't you come here today to attend his succession ceremony?"

When I looked at him, I slowly calmed down. He was right. From now on, I would never have to keep giving in just to please others. The evening breeze blew through the floor-to-ceiling windows and slowly cleared the anger that still lingered in the lounge. Liam stirred in my arms, then snuggled closer to me. He was sleeping peacefully, looking as sweet and well-behaved as ever.Noah sat beside me on the couch and gently teased Liam's cheek. His eyes were warm and soft, nothing like the sharp look he had when he faced Timothy earlier.I turned to him and finally asked the question I had wanted to ask for the past three years. "The car accident three years ago and your coma... It was all an act from the very beginning, wasn't it?"It was the truth I had sensed on the very first day of our marriage.Everyone thought he was a man in a coma with no awareness of the world around him. But I was the only one who noticed that his eyes looked clear and awake in the middle of the night. His breat

In the past, I kept giving in, only to be pushed around again and again. But now that I had love and courage, I would never let anyone disturb the peaceful life I had finally built. After the Bakers' succession ceremony ended, the guests gradually left. I took Liam to a private lounge on the side of the ballroom. But before I could even sit down, I heard shouting and arguing outside.Kasper and Grace were blocking the lounge entrance with a tired and miserable-looking Timothy. They were no longer cold and harsh like they used to be. Instead, they deliberately put on guilty and apologetic faces.I held the sleeping Liam in my arms and looked at them. I immediately knew why they were here.Grace quickly walked up to me.Her eyes were red as she reached for the back of my hand. "I'm sorry, Esther. We know we were wrong. You must have suffered so much taking care of a man in a coma for three years. We were always biased toward Layla. We were wrong to treat you that way."Kasper also lowere

"From this moment on, I will cut off all contact with the Bardots as a stranger. But I will still pay for your living expenses when you are old."The Bardots stood there with ugly expressions on their faces. Just then, a sudden commotion broke out at the entrance of the ballroom.Layla walked in wearing a designer gown. But the jewelry and proud, spoiled look she once had were gone. She had taken the last of Timothy's remaining assets and run away to spend it all. Then she had been cheated out of the rest of her money. With nowhere else to go, she had been forced to come back. The moment she saw me and Noah standing protectively in front of me, she shook her head in disbelief.Noah, the man who had lain in a hospital bed for three years and was supposed to spend the rest of his life in a coma, was standing there perfectly healthy. And I, the woman who was supposed to be trapped in loneliness while taking care of a man in a coma, was being carefully protected by him. Even my entire pres

I looked up and saw Grace walking toward me angrily in an old-fashioned evening gown.Kasper followed behind her with the same arrogant look on his face.Layla had nearly blown through the Bardots' entire fortune, yet he was still just as arrogant as ever.I hadn't seen them in three years. They had both aged quite a bit, but their attitude toward me hadn't changed at all.I stood there and looked at them coldly. The moment Grace reached me, she raised her hand to slap me.But Noah quickly stepped in front of me and stopped her.Her hand froze in midair. The pressure coming from Noah made her take several steps back. "You... You're..."Noah gave a quiet laugh. "Esther hasn't cut ties with you yet, so you're still my mother-in-law. But my wife is very precious to me. If you slap her and something happens to her, can your family afford the consequences?"Grace reacted exactly like Timothy had when he first saw Noah.First, she froze. Then she stared at Noah in disbelief. It wasn't until

Timothy followed my gaze. The mocking look on his face changed to shock, then to complete disbelief. My husband, Noah, was wearing a custom-made suit. He was tall and broad-shouldered.He slowly walked out through the main doors of the ballroom. His presence was calm and powerful, completely different from the sickly man who had once lain helplessly in a hospital bed three years ago."Esther, give Liam to the nanny. Don't tire yourself out." His voice was deep and gentle. He took our son, Liam Baker, from my arms and excitedly rubbed his cheek. Then he carefully handed him to the nanny. His movements were gentle and careful. But when he turned back toward Timothy, his eyes had become sharp. He stepped in front of me and shielded me with his tall frame. For the first time in a long time, I felt completely safe."Mr. Rowe, I heard you want my wife to divorce me and then marry you with half of my family's fortune. Is that right?"Timothy stood there in shock. "That's impossible... Noah, w
