LORA

My phone buzzed at exactly 12:00 a.m.

Oh, heaven. Who calls at this hour? Might probably be someone with awful news. I hesitated, unsure whether answering was a good idea. Erin wasn’t home yet, and it was just me and Alex.

Ever since Elene warned me about how serious the threat was, I’d made sure to be extra careful. No staying out late, no picking up random calls. Especially when the caller ID was hidden.

But who knows, it could be someone I know trying to call. An emergency or something. So, stupidly, I picked up.

“Hello?” My voice cracked, thick with sleep.

Nothing but breathing.

That’s creepy. I almost hung up when…

“Ms. Blake.”

The voice was wrong, distorted through some kind of filter.

“Don’t hang up.”

I bolted upright. Sleep vanished. I felt energized, alert.

“Who is this?”

“A friend.” A weird laugh followed, mechanical and cold. “Someone who understands your... situation.”

The darkness pressed in. Pulling myself together, I glanced at my door to make sure it was locked.

I mean Marcus Stone’s ultimatum pound in my skull like some kind of apocalyptic countdown to my doom.I have just seventy-two hours to come to terms with my plans and decisions.Reluctantly, I switch off the laptop, staring at the blank screen as if it holds the answer to my salvation. My stomach growls as if a football tournament is taking place inside. The coffee I made this morning has already gone cold and I don’t want to go to the kitchen.Erin’s been moving around nonstop in the apartment, like he’s searching for something, which I am sure is probably his way of trying to get my attention.I know it’s insane, living in the same house with someone and spending half your energy trying to avoid them. But it’s still better than confronting a man who’s rejected you twice like you’re a slice of stale ham.I love my dignity too damn much to beg for love or parade

ErinThe conference room stinks of fear and expensive cologne. Ten executives sat round the conference table as if awaiting judgement. One of the executives, Mr. Bannol or Barrow started fidgeting, brows slick with sweat, some even shrunk back on their chairs when I reached for a bottle of water.Others decided to quickly take notice of the new Art hung on the wall while evading any kind of eye contact with me. I don’t blame them. I’m absolutely pissed right now.“Gentlemen.” I spat. While half of them almost scrambled together like chickens . I learned forward, putting my elbows on the monogamy table.“You’ve had six months to deliver tangible results, and now all I hear is excuses.”

LORAMy phone chimed while I attempted to force down a few mouthfuls of toast. David's name flashed on the display and my gut twisted with an odd mixture of relief and discomfort. I hadn't connected with him since Alex and I relocated to Erin's luxurious cage two weeks earlier."Hi," I said, venturing onto the terrace where Erin's heightened werewolf hearing might not detect every syllable."Lora! At last." David sounded like he'd been anxiously waiting forever. "I've been attempting to contact you. You vanished, canceled Alex's check-up... what's happening?"The morning breeze felt harsh against my skin as I gazed at the miniature vehicles below. "Nothing major. Well, not nothing. Just... situation with Erin. Messy situation."
