Chapter 4: A Proposal Over Expresso

Lyra POV

He didn't recognise me. That was my first thought, sitting across from Ethan Vance in an office that smelled like leather and expensive coffee, watching him rebuild his composure in real time like a man closing a door he hadn't meant to leave open.

Good. I needed him not to recognise me, needed this to be exactly what I'd rehearsed as  a stranger walking into a room with leverage instead of a history, a business proposal instead of a plea. I had spent two years training myself out of vulnerability, and I wasn't about to hand it back to a man I barely knew just because something about his eyes felt, disorientingly, familiar.

"You're supposed to be dead," he said, finally, once the assistant had closed the door behind her.

"I get that a lot," I said, and I was almost proud of how flat my voice came out, how little it betrayed the fact that my heart was slamming against my ribs. "It's inconvenient for a lot of people that I'm not."

Something flickered across his face too fast to read, gone before I could name it. "Julian Reyes."

"Among others." I crossed my legs, folded my hands over my knee, forced my spine into the same unbothered posture I'd practised in front of a mirror for six weeks before I ever set foot back in this city. "You two have a history, I believe. Competing bids on the Hartwell acquisition. A rather public falling out over a supplier contract last spring. He's cost you money. I imagine he's cost you more than money."

"And you know how?"

"I've been watching. From a distance. For a long time." I let the words sit there, deliberately vague, and watched his jaw tighten fractionally, the only sign that the vagueness bothered him. "Mr Vance, I didn't come here to discuss your feelings about Julian Reyes. I came here to offer you a way to destroy him."

He didn't answer right away. He studied me instead, in a way that made my skin prickle not the leering, assessing way men in this city usually look at women across a negotiating table, but something closer to searching, like he was looking for a specific detail in my face and couldn't find it yet.

"I'm listening," he said again, and this time there was something rougher underneath it.

So I told him. Not everything, never everything, not to a stranger, no matter how useful he might become  but enough. That I had spent two years quietly gathering intelligence on Reyes Corp's operations, its vulnerabilities, its buried liabilities, the exact pressure points that would bring it to its knees if applied by someone with enough capital and enough nerve to apply them. That I had motive he didn't need the details of. That I had access no one else in this city could offer him.

"In exchange for what?" he asked, when I finally stopped talking.

This was the part I'd rehearsed the most, the part I'd said out loud alone in that rented apartment until it stopped sounding insane.

"Marry me."

The silence that followed was so complete I could hear the espresso machine hissing somewhere down the hall.

"A fake marriage," I clarified, before he could mistake this for something softer than it was. "A legal arrangement. It gives me the protection and the social standing I need to move against my family without immediately being buried under lawyers, and it gives you a wife whose maiden name alone will terrify every board member currently propping up Julian Reyes's company. We destroy him together. Efficiently. Completely. And when it's done, we dissolve the marriage, and you walk away with an empire twice the size it is now."

He leaned back in his chair, studying me with an intensity that made me want to look away and, infuriatingly, made me refuse to.

"You want me to marry a stranger," he said slowly, "to help you burn down your own family."

"I want you to marry someone who can hand you the one thing you clearly want more than anything else in this city," I said. "Julian Reyes's ruin. I'm simply offering to be efficient about how we both get what we want."

For a moment, something in his expression cracked something old, something that looked almost like grief, gone so fast I told myself I'd imagined it.

"You don't know anything about what I want," he said quietly.

"I know enough," I said. "I know you didn't get to where you are by turning down leverage."

He was quiet for a long moment, long enough that I started composing my exit, and started calculating which of the three other names on my list I'd approach if he said no.

Then he said the words that would change the shape of everything that came after.

"I'll agree," he said. "On one condition."

Relief and wariness collided in my chest in equal measure. "Name it."

He stood, came around the desk, and stopped close enough that I had to tilt my chin up to hold his gaze closer than strangers stand, closer than strategy required, close enough that I could see the faint scar near his temple and, for one disorienting heartbeat, that same flicker of unplaceable familiarity I'd felt walking in.

"If you're going to wear my ring," he said, "you belong to me completely. In every room we walk together. In public, and behind closed doors. I don't do half-measures, Ms Calloway. Not in business. Not in marriage."

My pulse did something complicated and unwelcome.

"That's not part of a business arrangement," I said. "That's ownership."

"Call it what you want." His eyes didn't leave mine. "That's my price."

I should have walked away. Every instinct I'd spent two years sharpening told me that a man who demanded ownership as the cost of an alliance was a man who would eventually demand more than I was willing to give.

But I thought of Camille's laughter through the ballroom windows. I thought of my mother's necklace glittering against skin that wasn't mine. I thought of two years spent teaching myself not to feel anything I couldn't control, and I decided, standing there, that I could survive being possessed by a stranger if it meant I finally got to watch the people who buried me alive lose everything they stole to build their new lives on top of my grave.

"Fine," I said, and held out my hand. "Then we have a deal, Mr Vance."

He took it. His grip was warm, certain, and lasted a fraction of a second longer than a handshake required.

"Ethan," he said. "If we're getting married, you might as well use my first name."

I smiled, cool and practised. "Don't get comfortable, Ethan. This is a contract. Nothing more."

Something shifted behind his eyes, no doubt, not hesitation, but something that looked, unmistakably, like a man watching a bet he'd already decided he was going to win.

"We'll see," he said.

I didn't understand, walking out of his office that afternoon with my pulse still unsteady and his warmth still ghosting against my palm, that I had just made a deal with the one man in this city who already knew exactly how the story was supposed to end and that it had nothing to do with contracts at all.

  • Marry Me To Destroy Them   Chapter 15: MARCUS VANCE

Lyra, povI met Ethan's brother properly for the first time at a small, informal dinner at the estate, a deliberate departure from the carefully staged public performances that had defined every other moment of my new marriage, and one that left me, if I was honest, unexpectedly nervous.Marcus Vance looked like an easier version of his brother the same dark hair, the same height, but where Ethan's face had settled into the guarded stillness of a man who'd learned young to hide what he was feeling, Marcus's expression moved constantly, openly, warmth and mischief flickering across it in a way that made him instantly, disarmingly likeable."So you're the ghost," he said, by way of greeting, grinning as he pulled out a chair across from me at the estate's smaller, more intimate dining room. "I have to say, you're better looking than the tabloids gave you credit for. They usually don't manage to make dead people look this good.""Marcus," Ethan said, in a tone that carried a warning unde

  • Marry Me To Destroy Them   Chapter 14: DIANE WHITFIELD

Lyra pov:I found Diane the next morning in the small, unremarkable office she kept above a bakery three blocks from Ethan's penthouse the same office where she'd spent two years quietly managing the financial architecture of my resurrection, hidden in plain sight from a family that had never once thought to look for me somewhere so ordinary. She took one look at my face when I walked in and set down the folder she'd been reviewing."Someone was watching you last night," she said. It wasn't a question."How did you already know that?""Because you have the same look on your face you had the night you told me about the mechanic who serviced your car dying four months after your accident," Diane said, gesturing for me to sit across from her desk. "That specific kind of frightened that you're trying very hard not to show."I sat and told her everything the figure on the security feed, the photograph, the vanishing act through corridors only someone with detailed building knowledge could

  • Marry Me To Destroy Them   Chapter 13: THE ENGAGEMENT ANNOUNCEMENT

Lyra Pov:The formal engagement announcement was held at the Vance Global Holdings headquarters, in a ballroom rented out for exactly the kind of spectacle Ethan's PR team had spent a week engineering enough press to guarantee saturation coverage, enough of the city's old-money elite to guarantee the news would travel through every drawing room and boardroom by morning, and enough security, quiet and unobtrusive, to guarantee that whoever had watched Julian walk in and out of that conference room wouldn't have the chance to do it again undetected.I wore ivory. Ethan's stylist had suggested it, deliberately, a color close enough to bridal to make the announcement feel inevitable rather than performative, and standing in the mirror before we left, watching the fabric catch the light, I thought of the red dress I'd worn to Camille's gala weeks earlier and understood, with a strange, vertiginous clarity, how much distance I'd traveled in that short a time. The woman in red had been a gho

  • Marry Me To Destroy Them   Chapter 12: RULES OF THE ENGAGEMENT

Lyra, with Ethan pov:We drew up the real rules the next morning, over coffee in a sunlit kitchen that felt too domestic, too gentle, for the conversation we were about to have."If we're doing this," I said, "if we're actually going to live under the same roof and perform a marriage in front of the entire city, I need to know where the lines are. The real ones. Not the ones the lawyers wrote."Ethan set down his mug, giving me his full attention in the way he did that I was slowly, reluctantly, coming to associate specifically with him nobody else in my life had ever looked at me quite that fully, like the rest of the room simply stopped existing."Ask me anything," he said."Do you expect this to become real? At some point? Is that what last night was the beginning of you trying to make this into something it isn't?"Something shifted behind his eyes, careful and deliberate. "I expect," he said slowly, "to never lie to you about what I want. And what I want is for you to feel safe e

  • Marry Me To Destroy Them   Chapter 11: THE VANCE ESTATE

POV: Lyra**Neither of us slept in Ethan's building that night. He didn't say why, not directly, but I understood without being told. If someone inside his own headquarters had watched Julian walk in and out of that conference room, had known enough to send me three words the exact moment the conversation ended, then his building was no longer a place either of us could trust. By ten o'clock, a car was waiting in the underground garage, and by eleven, we were driving north out of the city in silence so thick I could feel it pressing against my ribs."Where are we going," I asked, somewhere around the second hour, when the skyline had shrunk to a smear of light behind us and the road had narrowed into something quieter, darker, lined with trees instead of buildings."Home," Ethan said. "The real one. Not the penthouse."I hadn't known there was a difference until the car turned through a set of iron gates and the headlights swept across a house that looked less like the residence of a

  • Marry Me To Destroy Them   Chapter 10: JULIAN’S RETURN TO THE PICTURE

**POV: Lyra, with Julian*He came to me three days after the interview aired, which surprised me. I'd expected him to hide, to let his lawyers issue a careful statement while he avoided any direct contact until the shock of my resurrection had settled into something manageable. Instead, he showed up at Ethan's building on a Tuesday evening, alone, no assistant, no lawyer, standing in the lobby with an expression I hadn't seen on his face since the night he proposed to me raw, unguarded, terrified."Five minutes," he said to the security guard who moved to intercept him. "I just need five minutes."I could have refused. Ethan, watching the security feed from his office upstairs, texted me a single line “Say the word and he's gone” and part of me, the part that had spent two years hardening itself against exactly this kind of confrontation, wanted to say yes, wanted to let him be turned away without ever having to look at his face again. But I had questions only he could answer, and I h
