Chapter 5: Terms and Conditions

Lyra, POV

The lawyers arrived on a Thursday.

I hadn't expected the process of destroying my family to feel so much like drafting a merger agreement, but there I was, seated at Ethan's absurdly long conference table with two attorneys, a stack of documents thick enough to stop a bullet, and a man across from me who kept watching me with an attentiveness that had nothing to do with the paperwork.

"Prenuptial terms," his lawyer said, sliding a folder toward me. "Standard dissolution clause after twenty-four months, or upon mutual written agreement that the arrangement has served its purpose. Asset division remains separate throughout. No claim on Vance Global Holdings in the event of divorce."

"Fine," I said, scanning the clause without really reading it. I'd read worse. I'd survived worse.

"There's an addendum," Ethan said.

I looked up. He hadn't looked at his own attorney once since the meeting started; he'd been watching me the entire time, and something about the stillness in his face made my stomach tighten with a wariness I didn't fully understand.

His lawyer slid a second document across the table.

*Public conduct clause,* it read, in language too clinical for what it actually meant. *Both parties agree to maintain the appearance of a genuine marriage in all public settings, including but not limited to physical affection, joint appearances, and shared residence.*

Shared residence. I hadn't agreed to that specifically, though I supposed I'd known it was coming.

"You want me to live with you," I said.

"I want this to be believable," Ethan said. "Julian Reyes is not a stupid man, whatever else he is. If he suspects for one second that this marriage is a performance, everything you've spent two years building falls apart before we ever get to use it. That means we live together. That means when we're in a room with people who matter, you look at me like you mean it."

I set my pen down. "And when we're not in a room with people who matter?"

Something moved behind his eyes an answer he didn't say out loud, not yet, not with two lawyers and a stack of paperwork between us.

"Then the terms are whatever we decide they are," he said. "Together."

I signed the document. My hand didn't shake, and I was grateful for that, because something about the way he'd said *together* had unsettled something in my chest I thought I'd buried on that coastal road two years ago.

Ethan’s POV:

She signed without hesitation. I watched her do it and watched the same steady, unbothered hand that had once, eight years ago, grabbed my collar and hauled me out of the reach of three boys who wanted to teach a scholarship kid a lesson about where he belonged. She doesn't remember. I could see it in the flat, businesslike way she looked at me across that table, no flicker of recognition, no ghost of the girl who told a bleeding seventeen-year-old boy in a boarding school stairwell that he was worth more than the boys who'd hurt him, and then walked away like it cost her nothing.

It cost her nothing because she never thought about it again. It cost me everything, because I never stopped.

I have spent fifteen years becoming a man capable of standing in rooms like this one, capable of destroying companies before lunch and feeling nothing about it, and every single piece of that ambition was built, brick by brick, on the hope that one day I would be powerful enough, rich enough, *enough*, to find the girl who saved me and make sure nothing ever hurt her again.

I found her two years too late. I found her after a car had already gone off a coastal road, after a hospital had already logged her as deceased, after a family that should have protected her had already decided her death was more useful to them than her life.

I have spent every day since I learned the accident wasn't an accident quietly, invisibly, dismantling the people who did this to her  feeding anonymous tips to a detective who wouldn't let the case close clean, redirecting capital to make sure certain doors stayed open for whoever eventually came looking for the truth, waiting, with a patience that has cost me more than I'll ever admit, for the moment she would resurface and need somewhere to land.

I didn't expect her to come to me for revenge. I expected, if I'm honest with the parts of myself I don't examine too closely, that I would have to go to her.

But she walked into my office, alive and cold and magnificent, and offered me a contract instead of a reunion, and I took it, because I have learned, in fifteen years of losing her once already, that you take whatever version of someone you're allowed to have.

She thinks this is a business arrangement. She thinks I'm a stranger with useful leverage and a convenient grudge against her ex-fiancé.

She has no idea that I have loved her since I was seventeen years old, bleeding on a stairwell, watching a girl with unbroken green eyes decide, in an instant, that I was worth defending.

She has no idea that this marriage isn't a means to an end for me.

It's the only ending I've ever wanted.

Lyra pov

I felt him watching me the entire drive back to what would, as of next week, be our shared home, technically, though the paperwork now bore my name beside his on a dozen legal documents that made the fiction of our marriage terrifyingly official.

I told myself the unease sitting low in my stomach was a strategy. Caution. The reasonable wariness of a woman who had just legally bound herself to a man capable of ending a forty-year-old company in eleven minutes, according to the whispers I'd heard in the elevator on my way out of his building.

I told myself it had nothing to do with the way he'd looked at me across that conference table, like he was searching my face for something he'd already lost once and couldn't afford to lose again.

I told myself it had nothing to do with the scar near his temple, or the strange, persistent itch of familiarity I couldn't place no matter how many times I turned it over in my mind on the drive home.

I was still telling myself that when my phone buzzed against my thigh, an unknown number lit up the screen, and I answered it out of the same old habit I'd never quite trained out of myself, the habit of a woman who used to believe nothing bad could reach her twice.

"Lyra." Margaret's voice, unmistakable, cool and smooth as glass, filled the car before I could brace for it. "I heard the most fascinating rumour today. Something about a dead girl signing a marriage contract with Ethan Vance."

My blood went cold.

"How did you"

"Darling," she said, and I could hear the smile curling through the words like smoke, "did you really think I wouldn't notice the moment my daughter came back from the dead?"

The line went silent for one suspended, unbearable second before she spoke again, and when she did, every carefully constructed piece of the composure I'd built for two years cracked straight down the middle.

"Welcome home, Lyra," Margaret said softly. "It's been so long since we've had a real conversation about what actually happened to you that night. Perhaps it's time we did."

The line went dead.

I sat frozen in the back seat of a car that wasn't mine yet, in a marriage that wasn't real yet, staring at a phone screen gone black, and understood with a clarity that stole every ounce of breath from my lungs that the woman I had spent two years believing was merely complicit in my destruction had just told me, in five sentences, that she knew far more about that night on the coastal road than any stepmother should.

And somewhere beneath the fear clawing up my throat, a single, devastating thought took root and refused to let go.

What if the person I've been planning to destroy isn't the one who tried to kill me at all?

  • Marry Me To Destroy Them   Chapter 15: MARCUS VANCE

Lyra, povI met Ethan's brother properly for the first time at a small, informal dinner at the estate, a deliberate departure from the carefully staged public performances that had defined every other moment of my new marriage, and one that left me, if I was honest, unexpectedly nervous.Marcus Vance looked like an easier version of his brother the same dark hair, the same height, but where Ethan's face had settled into the guarded stillness of a man who'd learned young to hide what he was feeling, Marcus's expression moved constantly, openly, warmth and mischief flickering across it in a way that made him instantly, disarmingly likeable."So you're the ghost," he said, by way of greeting, grinning as he pulled out a chair across from me at the estate's smaller, more intimate dining room. "I have to say, you're better looking than the tabloids gave you credit for. They usually don't manage to make dead people look this good.""Marcus," Ethan said, in a tone that carried a warning unde

  • Marry Me To Destroy Them   Chapter 14: DIANE WHITFIELD

Lyra pov:I found Diane the next morning in the small, unremarkable office she kept above a bakery three blocks from Ethan's penthouse the same office where she'd spent two years quietly managing the financial architecture of my resurrection, hidden in plain sight from a family that had never once thought to look for me somewhere so ordinary. She took one look at my face when I walked in and set down the folder she'd been reviewing."Someone was watching you last night," she said. It wasn't a question."How did you already know that?""Because you have the same look on your face you had the night you told me about the mechanic who serviced your car dying four months after your accident," Diane said, gesturing for me to sit across from her desk. "That specific kind of frightened that you're trying very hard not to show."I sat and told her everything the figure on the security feed, the photograph, the vanishing act through corridors only someone with detailed building knowledge could

  • Marry Me To Destroy Them   Chapter 13: THE ENGAGEMENT ANNOUNCEMENT

Lyra Pov:The formal engagement announcement was held at the Vance Global Holdings headquarters, in a ballroom rented out for exactly the kind of spectacle Ethan's PR team had spent a week engineering enough press to guarantee saturation coverage, enough of the city's old-money elite to guarantee the news would travel through every drawing room and boardroom by morning, and enough security, quiet and unobtrusive, to guarantee that whoever had watched Julian walk in and out of that conference room wouldn't have the chance to do it again undetected.I wore ivory. Ethan's stylist had suggested it, deliberately, a color close enough to bridal to make the announcement feel inevitable rather than performative, and standing in the mirror before we left, watching the fabric catch the light, I thought of the red dress I'd worn to Camille's gala weeks earlier and understood, with a strange, vertiginous clarity, how much distance I'd traveled in that short a time. The woman in red had been a gho

  • Marry Me To Destroy Them   Chapter 12: RULES OF THE ENGAGEMENT

Lyra, with Ethan pov:We drew up the real rules the next morning, over coffee in a sunlit kitchen that felt too domestic, too gentle, for the conversation we were about to have."If we're doing this," I said, "if we're actually going to live under the same roof and perform a marriage in front of the entire city, I need to know where the lines are. The real ones. Not the ones the lawyers wrote."Ethan set down his mug, giving me his full attention in the way he did that I was slowly, reluctantly, coming to associate specifically with him nobody else in my life had ever looked at me quite that fully, like the rest of the room simply stopped existing."Ask me anything," he said."Do you expect this to become real? At some point? Is that what last night was the beginning of you trying to make this into something it isn't?"Something shifted behind his eyes, careful and deliberate. "I expect," he said slowly, "to never lie to you about what I want. And what I want is for you to feel safe e

  • Marry Me To Destroy Them   Chapter 11: THE VANCE ESTATE

POV: Lyra**Neither of us slept in Ethan's building that night. He didn't say why, not directly, but I understood without being told. If someone inside his own headquarters had watched Julian walk in and out of that conference room, had known enough to send me three words the exact moment the conversation ended, then his building was no longer a place either of us could trust. By ten o'clock, a car was waiting in the underground garage, and by eleven, we were driving north out of the city in silence so thick I could feel it pressing against my ribs."Where are we going," I asked, somewhere around the second hour, when the skyline had shrunk to a smear of light behind us and the road had narrowed into something quieter, darker, lined with trees instead of buildings."Home," Ethan said. "The real one. Not the penthouse."I hadn't known there was a difference until the car turned through a set of iron gates and the headlights swept across a house that looked less like the residence of a

  • Marry Me To Destroy Them   Chapter 10: JULIAN’S RETURN TO THE PICTURE

**POV: Lyra, with Julian*He came to me three days after the interview aired, which surprised me. I'd expected him to hide, to let his lawyers issue a careful statement while he avoided any direct contact until the shock of my resurrection had settled into something manageable. Instead, he showed up at Ethan's building on a Tuesday evening, alone, no assistant, no lawyer, standing in the lobby with an expression I hadn't seen on his face since the night he proposed to me raw, unguarded, terrified."Five minutes," he said to the security guard who moved to intercept him. "I just need five minutes."I could have refused. Ethan, watching the security feed from his office upstairs, texted me a single line “Say the word and he's gone” and part of me, the part that had spent two years hardening itself against exactly this kind of confrontation, wanted to say yes, wanted to let him be turned away without ever having to look at his face again. But I had questions only he could answer, and I h
